Choose a mattress that provides the right support for you

I often give my new clients a single page mattress buying guide when they look for advice in buying a new mattress – but want to ensure that their investment alleviates back discomfort and pain.

Before we proceed with our mattress buying guide, please remember that you spend almost one third of your life in bed – sleeping! Selecting the correct mattress for your back is crucial for your health. Your body needs to be able to relax in a good postural position so that it can recover from its day’s work and respond well to the demands of the next one. Many people who have a bad back miss the opportunity to help improve their back pain by not doing their research and buying the wrong type of mattress for them.

Choosing a mattress type for your posture

Many people miss the opportunity to help improve their back pain by buying the wrong type of mattress.

If you have a bad back, or suffer from back pain, particularly while sleeping, then choosing a mattress to prevent and treat back pain is something that can really help you. It is well discussed topic in the physiotherapy and health world. However, remember that choosing a mattress is both a subjective and objective matter.

Subjectively – you must feel comfortable lying on your mattress. Try plenty of mattress in the shop and compare how you feel lying on them (remember to wear clean socks on the day!)

  • Objectively – I advise people on the type of mattress to look for, and give guidance on the mattress types I think may help in the treatment, prevention and ultimate resolution of their back pain and stiffness.
  • Examples of Mattresses for bad backs.

    Mattress for Lumbar Lordosis:If you have a stiff lower back – and have a deep curve at the base of your spine that does not flatten to the ground naturally when you lie down,(known as an increased lumbar lordosis) – then I usually advise a mattress that is supportive but not too hard. In my experience if you have an increased lumbar lordosis and sleep on a hard mattress your spine can remain arched in your sleep while you are lying on your back. Clients with this back posture often find that they wake up with increased back pain in the morning if they have been sleeping on their backs. They tend to sleep on their sides to avoid this pain. However, if their mattress is a little softer, they find sleeping on their backs is not a problem.

    Mattress for Flexed Posture:Another example is if you a flexed lower back (known as a flat back) and you tend to slouch when you sit. In such cases your back will tend to benefit more from a firmer style mattress. If your flexed lower back is not supported enough, back pain problems may worsen over time, as a softer bed encouraging and supporting your flexed posture, allowing it into further flexion while you sleep.

    These are just two examples, but ultimately you need to understand what your posture type is, or what the underlying cause of your back pain is. Once you have discovered this, then it will help you choose the best mattress for your back pain.

    If unsure, ask your physiotherapist/Physical Therapist to help you on this one! I recently had a client who spent 3000 euro on a bed and having assessed her symptoms, it was clear that the new bed was cause of her hip pain! As you can imagine, my diagnosis was not very popular! I have seen many more who missed an opportunity to help improve or relieve their back pain by buying a mattress without doing their research first.

    Also, I think it is also worth pointing out that there are many environmental factors you should consider in choosing a correct mattress. Most modern mattresses are chemically treated, and if manufactured poorly, will result in high solvent levels that we absorb and inhale into our bodies night after night.

    Where possible it is preferable to buy a non-toxic mattress, preferably made from natural fibres. These are typically not treated with chemical flame retardants like PBDE and are made from organic cotton, wool and coir(coconut fibre). This is worth bearing in mind if you are considering a mattress, or pillow, made from a memory foam such as polyurethane.

    The cost of your mattress is not always indicative of its quality and effectiveness in the treatment of back pain. Sometimes a cheap mattress can tick all the boxes that your back requires. However, in my experience with mattress-buying – you often have to pay more to get a well manufactured mattress that has fewer chemicals in its makeup, which I firmly believe is very important with respect to your general health.

    So, that’s the basic mattress buying guide – do your research – both on the types and features of mattresses available and on your lying posture type before you open your wallet!

    Buying Considerations for Mattress Shoppers with Back Pain

    Lower Back Support

    Aches and pains radiating from your lower back iscommon for many sleepers(upper back pain is less common). However, going to sleep shouldn’t be associated with added pressure on your waist.

    Now, keep in mind that firmness and support are not the same characteristics, even though quite a lot of people commonly get them confused. You can easily have a soft or plush mattress which still offers fantastic support. At the same time, if your bed is firm, it doesn’t mean that it would give poor support or lack comfort.

    An adequate level of support should genuinely result from a mattress that manages to align your spine properly. At the same time, the bed should also remain perfectly comfortable. If you experience pressure, it could be because the mattress is not comfortable and you can’t seem to find the position that helps you relax.

    Firmness

    Firmness relates to the initial and subjective sensation that you get when you lay down on the mattress.

    The question many people ask is: are firm mattresses truly better for back health issues?

    Now, when it comes to back sleepers, there is anideal firmness for most, and it is medium-firm. This means that you should aim for a new mattress that falls into that category on the firmness scale. In this scenario, ten is the extra firm setting.

    Back Pain Pressure Points

    If there is an overly vital area to be attentive to when suffering from back pain, it’s the pressure points that an improper mattress can cause on your body. These points mean that there is extra push back to a specific area. This cancause misalignment throughout your body and your spine.

    These are mattresses that contain hundreds or thousands of coils, and each one wrapped individually. They act independently and on their own to enhance the contouring capabilities of the mattress. However, some can be a bit lacking in this regard when stacked against regular memory foam options.

    The general rule to consider if you decide to buy a mattress of the kind is to aim for between 1,000-2,000 springs. If you weigh more than 400 pounds or so, you should consider a mattress with more than 2,000 springs or look into the gauge of the wire. This could be a great option for pain treatment, but do your research; if less coils are used, find out about the properties of the wire.

    How Back Pain Affects Sleep

    Hundreds of conditions can contribute to back pain, which is a pretty vague term in itself. One could be referring to the various muscles, ribs, shoulders, or any region of the spine. While this may make it hard for some doctors to provide an accurate diagnosis, the good news is that all of these conditions have some commonalities when it comes to sleep.

    Whether it’s due to tenderness on the pressure points, or soreness that makes it difficult to move, back pain contributes to sleep disturbances significantly in a variety of ways.

    Disruptions

    When you’re dealing with an injury, it can be difficult to get comfortable, and once you do, you’ll probably lay still while you sleep. While this is good news for your rest, it could cause the inflamed regions of your back to swell up, causing pain and potentially waking you up to move and relieve some swelling.

    Longer Sleep Latency

    If you struggle to get comfortable or need a mountain of strategically placed pillows to get to sleep, you probably spend a fair amount of time tossing and turning. Because of the circadian rhythm that determines the release of sleepy hormones, most of the restorative non-rem sleep occurs early in the first half of the evening. So, if you’re taking hours to fall asleep, you could be missing out on the healing time your body desperately needs to repair your injuries.

    Changed Sleep Cycles

    Many people take medications to help with pain management, and while they may help you fall asleep, many of them change the way you rest, altering the phases. Normally we get most of our slow-wave deep sleep in the first half of the night and go through the majority of rapid-eye-movement or REM phases in the second half of the night. This is where we dream.

    When you take opioids or other medications to help you rest, studies show these reduce the amounts of both slow-wave or restorative sleep and REM sleep, meaning you could wake up without feeling rested even if you get eight hours.

    Your Spine While you Sleep

    One of the main functions of the spinal cord is to maintain balance so we can walk upright and our motor controls can function properly. If you’ve ever heard someone say it’s a miracle that humans can walk upright , it’s not so far from the truth. However, it takes a lot of subconscious effort, and the spinal curve is essential for it all to work.

    Why Does it Matter?

    When the body experiences trauma, like a car accident, a fall from a ladder, or slipping on the ice, the body has to find a way to accommodate the damage, heal it, and keep us walking upright. These changes can create misalignments that sometimes last for years and cause pain.

    If you’re wondering what this has to do with sleep, the answer is two-fold. One, sleeping wrong can be enough trauma to cause these issues, and two, sleeping right is a big part of healing these issues. So while those with chronic back pain might think they have a rocky relationship with sleep, the real issue might be the habits or the mattress.

    Creating Optimal Spinal Alignment

    When we enter slow-wave sleep, our muscles are not paralyzed like in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) periods, and we may move around. This could mean rolling around and winding up in odd sleeping positions. If you have a mattress with zoned support, this shouldn’t be a big deal as long as you don’t wind yourself into a pretzel. The mattress should do the work in letting your shoulders and hips sink in a little while supporting the spine.

    However, if you’re on an ultra-hard bed and end up on your side, you could end up messing with the spinal curve, and if you’re already dealing with pain and inflammation, this isn’t great news.

    Mattresses have come a long way in the past few years and many companies have realized the benefits of proper spinal alignment for sleep. When you’re laying on the side, proper alignment should be fairly straight, allowing the hips and shoulders to sink in slightly while supporting the middle. Mattresses that offer zoned support tend to be great at this.
