How to Sell a Used Mattress
Selling a used mattress is a multi-step process that includes determining a reasonable selling price, researching applicable state laws, pinpointing a sales venue, and providing sufficient product information for prospective buyers.
This guide for selling used mattresses includes step-by-step instructions to follow in order to facilitate a successful transaction – but be warned: most used mattress sellers will only recuperate a small percentage of the original product price.
Step 1: Determine a Fair Price
Generally speaking, a used mattress will command a resale price that is roughly equivalent to 20% to 30% of the original product price. If a mattress originally costs $1,000, then expect to resell it for $200 to $300; if the original cost is $2,000, then the resale price will probably fall between $400 and $600.
In addition to original price, here are a few more factors that may affect the resale price of a used mattress:
Years of use:The average mattress will need to be replaced after six to seven years of consistent nightly use. A mattress that has been used for three years or less will command a higher price than one that has been used for longer.
Topper or protector use:Mattress toppers and protectors can be used to preserve the comfort layer of a mattress over time. A mattress that has primarily been used with a topper and/or protector will typically be in much better shape than one that has not been used with these accessories.
Consistent or sporadic use:A used mattress that has been used on a nightly basis will typically command a lower price-point than one that has primarily been used as a guest bed on an inconsistent basis.
Current mattress condition:Assuming the mattress was brand new when it was originally purchased, how much has its quality declined over time? Is it ‘Like New’, ‘Very Good’, ‘Good’, ‘Acceptable’, or in ‘Poor Condition’? Factors that affect the condition of the mattress include:
- Sagging or indentations in the mattress surface that measure one inch or deeper
- Splits or cracks in the sleep surface
- Coils, wires, and other metal parts protruding through the side wall
- Issues with the cover, such as loose threads or broken zippers
- Burns, cuts, scrapes, or other types of physical destruction
- Permanent stains, such as bodily fluids or food
- Lingering smells, including odors from tobacco products
- Buildup of dust mites and other allergens
Sellers perks:Is the owner willing to deliver the mattress themselves? Are pillows, pads, and other accessories included with the used mattress? Incentives like these can help used mattress sellers add to the resale price.
Brand:Mattresses manufactured by high-profile companies will usually command a higher price-point than those made by less prominent companies – but this factor is less likely to play a significant role compared to the other criteria listed above.
Step 2: Research Mattress Resale Laws and Regulations
Now that you have a ballpark price-point in mind, let’s look at some laws and regulations guiding the practice of selling used mattresses in the United States. It’s important to note that most mattress resale laws are enforced at the state level; as such, the rules vary from state to state.
Legal considerations for selling a used mattress include:
- Cleaning and sanitizing:In some states, used mattresses must be properly cleaned and disinfected before they can be sold by anyone, including private individual sellers. Approved methods often include commercial laundering, steam cleaning, and/or chemical treatment.
- Re-covering:Some states will only approve the sale of a used mattress is new cover ticking is used. Other states prohibit mattress owners from re-covering their mattress in order to hide stains or physical damage.
- Flammability:Mattress flammability is enforced at the federal level, specifically the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). According to 16 CFR Part 1633, the ‘peak rate of heat release’ for a mattress may not exceed 200 kilowatts during the standard 30-minute safety test, and the ‘total heat release’ may not exceed 15 megajoules during the first 10 minutes of this test. Mattress owners who are unsure about their model’s flammability status should contact the manufacturer or, alternatively, the CPSC.
Other factors apply to businesses and brands, but not individual sellers. One example is ‘tagging’. In some states, color-coded tags are used to indicate if a used mattress has been properly cleaned and disinfected, or indicate if mattresses that have been rebuilt from used or recycled materials. In virtually every state where tagging laws exist, they do not apply to individuals selling mattresses to other individuals.
Be sure to carefully research all applicable state laws and regulations. This information is typically found through the state’s departments of health and human services, consumer affairs, licensing, and/or agriculture.
Step 3: Write an Advertisement
When crafting a used mattress ad, it’s important to remain truthful about its present condition. Be sure to take several photographs of the mattress from different angles to emphasize its height and size, as well as licensing tags if they are intact. When listing out qualities and characteristics of the mattress in the ad, be sure to include the following:
- The mattress size (Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, or specialty size)
- The mattress height, in inches
- Materials in the comfort system, such as polyfoam, memory foam, latex, and/or microcoil layers
- The support core – springs, foam, latex, or air chambers?
- Fabrics used in the cover, such as cotton, polyester, rayon, wool, and/or lyocell
- The age of the mattress, in years (or months if applicable)
- Whether the mattress was used as a primary sleep surface or a guest bed
- Whether a mattress pad or protector was used
Finally, be sure to list the mattress price somewhere in the ad. Also indicate if the price is negotiable with the abbreviation OBO (Or Best Offer).
Step 4: Choose a Selling Venue
In most cases, mattress owners will not be able to sell their used model to a brick-and-mortar retailer. These establishments usually prefer to exclusively sell new mattress models. In the event that a brick-and-mortar store agrees to purchase a used mattress, the resale price will typically be quite low.
Used mattress sellers typically have better luck using online marketplace sites like Amazon and Craigslist. These sites enable mattress owners to post advertisements for their used mattress, sell directly to other individuals, and coordinate delivery/shipping or pickup details.
Community-based websites, forums, and social media pages can also be valuable resources for used mattress sellers. Many allow users to post ads directly on their sites. Sellers can supplement their digital advertising with physical postings in local newspapers and on bulletin boards throughout their community.
Before attempting to sell a mattress to an individual purchaser, here are a few important considerations:
- Online marketplace sites regulate individual transactions to ensure that both parties are satisfied. In the event that a purchaser does not pay the full price or otherwise fails to fulfill their complete obligation, sellers should reach out to site personnel immediately.
- Mattress warranties are never transferable to secondhand owners, regardless of whether or not the warranty is still valid. Be sure to clarify this point with potential buyers, as they may expect their mattress to be covered under the original warranty.
- Most experts agree that May, June, July, November, and December are the best times of the year to sell a used mattress. These months precede new product rollouts from most leading mattress brands in January and August, and sellers face less competition in the marketplace. Likewise, January and August are generally considered the worst times to sell a used mattress.
- Whether or not a seller includes ‘OBO’ in their price listing, chances are they will need to negotiate with potential buyers. This is why it may be advantageous to sell the mattress at 40% to 50% of the original product price. Even if buyers haggle the price down, the seller may still net a profit of 20% to 30% of the original price.
- Expect visit requests from potential buyers who wish to view the mattress in person before finalizing their purchase. Sellers are free to decline these requests, but doing so may affect their resale success.
- Sellers are not obligated to deliver the mattress to the buyer. If they choose to do so, then the cost of transporting and handling the item should be factored into the price-point. If they choose not to do so, then they may want to consider deducting mattress transportation costs from the price.
- Remember:it is illegal to sell a mattress that has not been cleaned and sanitized, or is infested with bed bugs. It is also illegal (as well as unethical) to sell a mattress as new if it has been used. Those who mislead potential buyers could face legal ramifications.
What is a Used Mattress Worth?
Would you ever purchase a used mattress? In an informal poll, we found thatless than 10% of people would buy a used mattress. Surprisingly however, a ton of people try to sell used mattresses all of the time.
What you need to know before selling your used mattress
To help you understand the market you’re selling in, our Dolly Product team pulled together some research on the used furniture market. Let’s start by looking at the volume in which people sell used mattresses:
We found mattresses were the fourth most listed furniture type behind chairs, tables, and beds. Due to how people tend to categorize their furniture, it’s unclear how to make the distinction between bed frames and mattresses, but the data clearly shows that they’re a popular second-hand item listed to be sold.
It seems likely that people were much more inclined to purchase a used table than a mattress. In fact, in the same informal poll, 100% of participants said they would buy a used table versus the less than 10% who said they would purchase a used mattress – clearly, they’re viewed very differently when buying used furniture.
When asked about the reasons behind not buying a used mattress, it came down to concerns over cleanliness (derived from how mattresses and tables are used differently) for the two furniture items.
How often are new vs. old mattresses sold online?
Using Google Trends, we found that new mattresses are listed roughly 2x as often as used mattress on the internet. Again, this is surprising data because we found that only 10% of customers are interested in used mattresses. Most likely, this is because there are more used mattresses available than are being sold. Less likely, but still possible, is the idea that people felt uncomfortable being honest about whether they’d be a used mattress in our poll (let’s hope you’re not staying at their Airbnb!).
When is the best time to sell a used mattress?
August is the most popular month for both used and new mattresses. The second most popular month is January. This lines up with industry experts’ suggestion of buying furniture in August and January due to new furniture entering stores. New furniture releases mean sales and clearance pricing.
What does this mean for how you sell your used mattress?
Many people attempt to sell their used mattress, but not as many people are interested in buying used mattresses. This means that there should be a ton of supply for used mattresses, which should drive prices down.
If you’re trying to sell a used mattress…you’re not going to get much for the mattress, due to the simple fact that it’s used. To help increase your possible payout, try to increase the perception of it being as new as possible.
If any of the following is true, add it to your listing to increase your odds of selling!
- Only used in a guest room
- You have receipts with date of purchase
- Tags are still intact
- Is in plastic protective wrapping
- You used a mattress protector
- Anything to help decrease the perception of it being used
Try to sell your mattress in late fall or late spring. You’ll want to avoid the competition from furniture stores that comes in August and January.
If you’re one of the 10% of people who don’t mind buying a used mattress…you’re in a buyer’s market! Be tough when negotiating with sellers, and don’t be afraid to shoot for a low price. Odds are, they aren’t getting many offers from anyone else. Alternatively, you can agree to the price, but ask that they take care of delivery (and make sure to let them know that Dolly is a great, inexpensive way to bring their used mattress to its new home!).
Buy in August or January to take advantage of the high-volume market. Many people will be looking to take advantage of the pricing deals, therefore getting rid of their old mattress. Take advantage of this!
What is a used mattress worth?
It’s hard to pinpoint an exact value without knowing the details about the mattress. You can run the different attributes through Blue Book for Furniture to get an estimate of its value, but the real market value is probably even lower.
The most typical mattress price in the secondhand market is $250.
Once the mattress has been taken out of its protective seal, it’s going to lose value similar to how a brand new car loses value after driving off the lot.
We’d suggest a healthy dose of low expectations when forecasting the future value of your mattress, otherwise you may be sorely disappointed.
No matter what your mattress is worth, it might need hauling, whether that’s to your new apartment or the dump. Book a Dolly to find Helpers who’ll bring your mattress to its destination, whether it be into the home of an excited new owner, or to its final destination at the dump.
How Much is a Used Mattress and Box Spring Worth?
How much is a Slightly Used King, Queen, Full, or Twin size Mattress Set Worth
First, have you ever wondered about the value of various house hold items like that baseball card collection you’ve had boxed and stored for years? Perhaps grandpa’s old watch that old heirloom piece of furniture that has been handed down the last couple generations? While it wouldn’t be a surprise to see many of these kink of items show up on PBS’s Antique Road show because they can actually have some real value, I am pretty sure there is one item you won’t find on there, your old mattress set. Surely it’s worth something though; I mean you probably paid hundreds maybe even a couple thousand dollars or more. It has to have some value right? Well unfortunately most items on the Antique Road have nothing more than sentimental value and the fact is most of these items simply aren’t worth very much. They valuable items are often quite special, soWhat makes them special and so valuable while other items are essentially worthless?
- Really great condition
So, how do we determine if a car, a piece of furniture, or a mattress set is worth something? Applly the value criteria. The fact is whether your selling or buying a used mattress and boxspring you’ll find they just don’t meet the value criteria and frankly aren’t worth much if anything.
How much to ask for an old used mattress?
- Used mattresses are not highly desirable, so the asking price matters. You do not want to scare off potential buyers with unrealistic figures. This number is not likely to be your bottom dollar or selling price. People always want to hagle and it is recommended to leave some wiggle room for negotiations. Careful to walk a fine line of not to cheap and not to expensive because you don’t want to scare off potential mattress buyers.
- Take into consideration the age of the mattress, useful life is normally around 8 years.
- Rarity is hardly an issue with old mattresses their like a face everyone has one.
- Desirability can be tricky h owever if you have a mattress that is harder to find may get more in the used market place. Items can include specialty mattresses like latex mattresses, the Sleep Number Bed, or an Authentic Tempur Pedic Memory Foam Mattress even an organic mattress. These items you will most certainly get a little more since it is so much harder to find gently used items like these.. You’ll definitely get more money for these items than the run of the mill used Sealy, Serta, or Simmons mattress set. After all most of brand name mattresses can be found on any given curb on trash day.
Old bed value is subjective to the seller and the buyer.

Looking for used cal king box spring mattress only In the neighborhood. Below $60 that’s all I can afford . Student freshman thank you
Cecilia, California Kings are very rare, finding one that is usable, used, and under 60.00 will be like finding a needle in a haystack. Goodluck Doug
agreed Douglas. I don’t know where you live but I have a king size dormia bed metress only for 350$ for it was 2800 brand new.
Looking for 2 twin mattress sets for bunkbeds
Amy, Sorry we do not sell used bedding. Bunk beds typically don’t use sets (mattresses and boxsprings) only the mattress. Check your local Craigslist or Backpage.com or newspaper. Hopefully this gets you in the right direction. Doug
What should I value a king mattress set thats 30 years old?
Debie, Being honest, pretty much worthless to the majority of people. The typical age a mattress is considered worn is 8 years give or take a year or 2 these days. While the old ones were built much better, a 30 year old mattress also has 30 years of accumulated dust-mites, body oils, perspiration etc. No matter how clean it may look or “we think it is”.
Give it away or dispose of it is my recommendation. Doug
I have a used twin mattress. Three years old with the original plastic.
Dedra, Post it on Facebook, Craig’s List, Backpage.com.
Hope this helps
How much do you think I should sell my king size mattress, two twin box springs, and rails for, as a 3 yr owner? The items are still in “good” condition and only used them for three months (slept on it). The stuff just sits in my back room. Just a rough estimate please and thank you!
As much as you can LOL. Just remember selling mattresses is kind of like selling used socks, most people aren’t going to have much interest in them. Secondly if you price it to high it WILL continue to sit your back room 😉 Truthfully, I have no idea. We do not sell used beds. If I can give you one piece of advise you do need to establish what was originally paid for the mattress set so people know how much it WAS valued at when it brand new. Also if it was an average to high quality set the normal expected comfort life is somewhere between 5-8 years. Click here to learn more about how long a mattress set should last. Good luck and here’s to selling it fast! Doug
I’ve got a new King size Sealy for sale and bedroom suite as well along with certificate and warranty
Mattress alone was 2000
Asking just that for the entire suite
For more info go to offer up you will see it
Quick question, please!
I have a “Night Therapy Spring 13 Inch Deluxe Euro Box Top Mattress and BiFold® Box Spring Set, Full”, bought off of Amazon. 1 year old. bought for $372 before tax and shipping/handling, mattress protector used.
What can I put the starting price at?
I have a brand new barely used queen mattress and box spring how much should I sell it for ?
Nicole, We do not sell used mattresses so I do not know what the going rate would be. I do know that there are several things to factor into your decision. What kind of shape is it in? Does it smell? Cigarette smoke, pets, age etc. Is it broke down or does it squeak? What did cost new? These are just some of the things to consider. Remember this is a used bed and for many people these have about as much appeal as used socks or undergarments and most simply would not even consider purchasing a mattress that has been slept in before why some simply don’t care or don’t find it to be an issue. Doug
I have (i think its called a bundle bed) twin size where one bed lowers under the other. it was my grandmas for their guess room and no one used it. original they thought they need boxsprings for it as well (which obviously don’t because then its to big to slide under) but my question is, which is on my best interest
A. Sell Trundle bed with mattresses and sell 2 twin box springs separately? or
B. Just sell both mattress and both box springs and sell trundle frame seperately?
thanks so much
hey sorry just left you a message the trundle bed if that what its even called, if its not would you let me know the actual name and i have pictures if you need incase you don’t know what i am talking about. thank you so much again.
Ash, If your goal is to get rid of everything? Probably half a dozen one six of the other, but if it were me… A. Sell Trundle bed with mattresses and sell 2 twin box springs separately? Doug
How much do you think we should ask for a Sweet Mornings LatexGel King size mattress, list price $3,800
purchased on 19 Sep 2008 and normally comes with a 20-year warranty. Most of the mattresses life is
still still ahead. We love it but due to health reasons need to revert to two twin mattresses of the same
quality. It does have a very small tear in one corner where it got caught during handling but not a problem.
It’s immaculately clean and from a spotless home.
Reginald, Used mattresses typically have little value. Even expensive mattresses wear out and lose their support. Take expensive under garments they are rarely sought after, wanted or desired by the majority. Used mattresses are no different and have that same ick stigma attached to them for most of mattress shopping people out there. With that said, the buyer for a used mattress is small to begin with so in the end you are looking for that unique individual that thinks a 8 year old 3800.00 mattress has value to it.
Lastly in response to the 20 warranty, as you or anyone else on the internet can research, mattress warranty is not an indicator of how long a mattress will last or be comfortable. It is also not transferable in most cases. Usable comfort life for a good mattress is approximately 6-10 years at best. Great question. I wish you lots of luck and hope you get as much as you possibly can. Doug
A co-worker is relocating unexpectedly, trying to sell as much as possible. Has a king size mattress and box spring that was purchased within the last 2 years, she keeps mentioning the original Buy price but says she’ll take what she can get. It’s no Tempur-Pedic or memory foam, so I figure $200 would be a good, reasonable amount? Thanks for any suggestions
I have 2 twin matresses and a twin box spring, there used but in good condition, how much should I seek this for
Austin, See what that exact item goes for new. Understand you probably will get very very little in comparison. It is a trial and error thing. You will likely have to lower your price and you may not be able to sell it. Doug
How much is a slightly used Cal-king bed, twin mattresses, remote control with heated mattress worth?
Hello: Can somebody help me. I live in New York City. I have a question which I hope somebody can answer for me. I was living bad and just came out if a shelter. I was given a room to start over again and live. I need a Queen size mattress and box spring with frame to sleep. I don’t have much money to spend on it. Does anybody know of people who donate bedding to people and not that much cost if they do charge. I am really trying to live again. Please help me if you can.
Keven, I would start by reaching out to local churches. They often will make an announcement and solve your problem quickly. Doug
I have had my water bed tube bed since 1985. I finally had a tube leaking (8tubes) So I purchase new one for my Soma but guess what they started to leak after two year and make me sick. I thought out the complete bed. I am chemical sensitive so will have to find and old bed. I am also allergic to boric acid. LIve in Sacramento area. Any suggestion.
Jerry, Purchasing a used mattress does not necessarily keep a person from being exposed to said chemical. Instead of being concerned about off gassing you should also be concerned about off dusting. (the wearing down or disintegration of foams, fibers, and fabrics) When this happens particulates go airborne and can be ingested, absorbed, and inhaled. My suggestion look at a new or and old mattress you are certain is pure. Purity can be verified through third party documentation like certifications. Those certificates prove that what is in question is what they say it is. Certified organic. Make sure such documentation is up to date. Savvyrest is the line of mattresses we offer that do just that. Hoping this gets you in the right direction. Feel free to reach out to me to learn more. Doug Belleville Manager
I am from Iowa city. I want to sell a 9-month-old used mattress. where should I sell it ??
I had posted on facebook and craigslist and offer up as well.. But no luck.
It is Simmons Beauty Sleep Plush Queen Mattress with Box Spring. It is a Well-maintained and clean mattress (used only for 09 months). Need your help and suggestion.
Looking forward to your reply,
Aastha, No one is going to get rich selling a used bed. I often correlate it to selling used socks. Try try try again. You nearly have to spam the websites with your listing. Know that if you do you are likely to get banned. You need to change up your content on each post making it unique and different. You may have to drop your price. There is not a large market for used beds. You could also look at donating it. Hope this helps. Doug
We have a $1400 twin mattress bought about 16 months ago for our guest room. We’ve had 3 guests and know want to turn the room into an office. It has had a protective mattress cover from the beginning, and will also include box spring and frame. What do you suggest asking for it?
Hi my name is Joey Baldwin and I am wanting to sell my Queen size headrest, footrest, and (2) headpost and i only had it for 1year nothing is really wrong with it im wanting to get another queen size bed. I forgot to tell you that my headrest, footrest, and my (2) headpost are made out of wood. I just want to know how much would these items are worth so I can sell them.
The spelling on the original post and some of the comments is atrocious. That said, the information is helpful.
Jean, Thank you for your feedback. I’ll admit that I am a much better mattress salesman and business owner than writer and blogger. I am happy that you hung in there and was able to take advantage of my 32 plus years of industry experience. I try… Take care Doug
Hi….I’m sorry to influx you with more questions but….
Never slept on, 2 yr old mattress w/ back support euro top…..king size….
I don’t know how to price it out for a yard sale?
Suggestion? Thank you so much.
Susan, I am sorry. I wouldn’t have clue since we only sell new ones. Shop current rates that used mattresses are going for and price accordingly. Doug
I had a California king & box springs that was bought in2014 slept on it for about
6 months which I then had to store at a storage site with all of my other household items when I went to move all of my things rats had gotten in & ruined my mattress & box springs with their feces I did have insurance on my unit to include vermin.
the insurance company wants me to provide them with the initial cost with depreciation can you possibly tell me how you would calculate the depreciation of such item ?
Mr. Bellville I had a Beauty Rest California king mattress & box springs to which I had to store at a storage facility the mattress & box springs were damaged while in storage by rats with their feces I did have insurance coverage on my unit . the insurance company wants the price when purchased & the depreciation of the set was bought in early 2015 & is in excellent condition due to that I only slept on it for about 9 months before I had to store it , could you please help me with the depreciation calculation. Had to throw away due to the damage . I hope that you will be able to help me . thank you , Joleane
Hi Joleane, I have not been a Simmons Beautyrest Dealer for many years now. My suggestion is if possible is to find your (Proof of purchase) old receipt, cancelled check, or credit card statement that supports the price you paid at that time. I wouldn’t have a clue to figure out depreciation as there are no books to determine that like NADA or Edmunds in the the automobile industry. Insurance companies are looking out for their best interest. You need to look out for yours and hold your ground. Mattresses have mostly gone to 1 sided designs. I am not sure if yours is one or 2 sided? If 2 sided, Simmons isn’t even making those anymore. These are much more desirable and cost more if you can even find them these days. Hope all goes well. Feel free to call me if you like. Doug
Great idea of this type of article! Can you just let me know the best resource for donating used mattress
Sorry, I am not familiar with all of the different local markets. Start with churches and other charitable organizations. Craigslist also has a free ad section. Thank you Doug
