Spring mattresses have been in use for a very long time. They are based on a very old design. This is a design where springs are embedded inside a layered cushioned structure. These cushions provide the base where your body rests. The main disadvantage of this approach is that it reduces comfort.
The springs that provide support push back with a certain force on the body on top of the cushioned surface. This manifests as an increased pressure on certain parts of your body while sleeping.

Memory Foam Mattress
When we say spring mattresses are old school, we really mean it. Especially, if we compare them to memory foam ones. Memory foam was an invention first used by NASA. This was only to provide more safety for astronauts. Once used only for the space program – it is now available to anyone.
Memory foam is in its essence an artificially made compound called polyurethane. Being a synthetic material it has some neat and engineered properties. The material has small cavities where air can be trapped – almost like a sponge.
This is why memory foam deforms under exhibited pressure. It also returns to its former shape after the pressure disappears. It also reacts to temperature. When heated, it softens up and when exposed to cold, its structure becomes more rigid and stiff.
The market for bedding and accessories is booming with memory foam-based products. From pillows to mattresses and even covers – everyone is raving about it. This is completely explainable as customers love comfort. Its ability to conform to the shape of your body weight that presses on the material.
When you lay down, your body compresses the foam structure. And without deforming it into a permanent shape because of its unique structure. Little cavities inside the memory foam mentioned earlier trap air and they do not deform.
They simply displace from their original position and shape.It returns back to normal shape once the force is no longer present.

Although we would like to recommend memory foam mattresses as the ideal bedding – we have to point out some of its negative attributes first. Even though it provides many pros there are some hard-to-ignore cons too.
Depending on the quality of the foam structure, memory foam mattresses can cost up to 3 times more. Remember, it being a synthetic material – manufactured with an industrial process. And with compounds made under specific conditions in the lab. Memory foam is sensitive to body heat.
This can lead to a reduced air flow, which will introduce excess heat and sweat. And where sweat is present, you can be sure of a bad smell too. This material absorbs all smells. Bad smell can be difficult to remove – especially if the quality of the memory foam is lower than standard.
Whichever type of mattress you decide to choose, make sure to test your before you buy one. Some people say that they can never go back to using spring-base mattresses. I’d like to start by addressing your second question, regarding the relationship between warranty and longevity, as this is something that many mattress shoppers miss. The most important thing to know is thatthe length of a mattress warranty hasnothingto do with how long the mattress will last. Some products with 25-year warranties will lose their comfort or support in 5 years or less. Likewise, a product with a 5-year warranty might serve you well for 10 years or more.
A warranty only protects you againstmanufacturer defects. Defects, like springs popping out or fabric not being stitched properly, are most likely to appear in the first year — so in most cases it wouldn’t really matter whether the warranty is 1 year or 100 years. Things like loss of comfort or support are generallynotcovered by the warranty, unless they reach truly extreme levels, which are most commonly defined as a 1.5" sag that can be assessedwithout anyone lying on the bedby stretching a string across the mattress and measuring the distance from the bottom of the sag to the string. Naturally, a mattress with a sag bigger than this is in pretty dire straits, and thus its condition is considered to be the result of an unexpected defect in the manufacturing process. The reason that nothing below this standard is covered is to make it clear thatthe amount of sagging and/or body impressions that can be expected under normal wear and tear isnotconsidered a defect and thus isnotcovered at all under the warranty.
So, in terms of how long you can expect this mattress to last, our data suggests that on average, Perfect Sleeper owners tend to keep their mattress a little over 10 years before it needs replacement due to it being old or worn out. This is a typical length of time that is consistent with the average product longevity for all mattress brands.
Now, to address your first question about the warranty length of this specific model. According to the website of JCPenney, which is the only retailer that carries this model under the "Woodlyn Hills" name, this model has a 10-year limited warranty. The warranty information they provide seems to indicate that this is a pro-rated warranty, meaning the replacement value would be pro-rated based on the amount of time the mattress was used prior to a warranty claim being made.
Of course, you have surely noticed that in this case, the warranty length and the average length of ownership line up exactly, but it is nonetheless important to understand that this is merely a coincidence, not a causal relationship.

According to Consumer Reports the average life for a coil spring mattress is about 8 years. Truthfully it is my opinion the average mattress used 7-8 hours nightly will only last at best 6-7 years, but what does all this really mean and can they last longer?
Sure they can but lets put this into the proper context. Mattresses can physically last 20-30 years and lets face it number one its not healthy to sleep on most 20 + year old mattresses for health reasons we won’t even get into, that could be a blog by itself. Number two you wouldn’t wear your clothes that long without proper cleaning and care so why should mattress care be any different. It is no different and the people own these mattresses typically ignore them. The fact is mattresses are out of site and out of mind. Physically almost every mattress in that age group has out lasted its useful, supportive, comforting life and capability. In reality the bed is causing more problems than it is resolving.
Good quality premium mattresses used night after night can support and offer a sleeper at least a fair amount comfort up to 10 maybe 12 years. The fact is that after gravity, body weight, and construction materials begin to take its toll in the form of inadequate support and lack of mattress comfort.
So what can you do to make your mattress last a little longer?
If you would like to get the most out of your mattress both support and comfort take care of your mattress like you would your car’s engine with regular oil changes. In the case of a new mattress be sure to place a boxspring or foundation under it using proper steel bed frame or wood supports using legs that keep the whole bed unit from sagging.
Lastly your new mattress is not a chair so don’t use it for one. Many salespeople hype up extra heavy-duty seat or side edge support in mattresses implying it can be used like a chair. Not true, we never recommend using the side of your bed for nothing more than a way to get into or exit your bed, but if you must sit on the edge of your bed, it is very important not to sit in the same spot.
Finally cheaply constructed mattresses using low grade foams, minimal amounts of foam for padding, and coils springs that are weak in gauge and few in numbers can also cause mattresses to fail in just a couple of years as quick as a few months. These types of mattresses are designed for guest rooms, very light weight people (little kids) or decorative purposes like completing a bedroom that is never used.

Few things feel as good as a good night’s sleep. That’s especially true if sleep seems to escape you, night after night after night.
If you’ve heard about memory foam, you may wonder if it could improve the quality ofyoursleep. Some people swear by it. Others are less enthusiastic.
What exactly is memory foam? And what are its pros and cons? Here’s information to help you decide whether memory foam is worth a try.
What Is Memory Foam?
First designed in the mid-1960s for NASA airplane seats, memory foam is made from a substance called viscoelastic. It is both highly energy absorbent and soft.
Memory foam molds to the body in response to heat and pressure, evenly distributing body weight. It then returns to its original shape once you remove the pressure.
In addition to protecting against impact, these properties make memory foam very comfortable. After its "virgin flight" for NASA, memory foam made a foray into other applications. For example, it was used as cushioning in helmets and shoes. Medicine found a use for it in prosthetics and products to prevent pressure ulcers such as seating pads for people who are severely disabled.
Then, memory foam really took off. It’s now well known for its use in pillows, mattress pads, and mattresses, which come in different densities and depths.
What Are the Benefits of Memory Foam?
Could the special properties of memory foam enhance your sleep? Sleep specialist Donna L. Arand, PhD, says that objective studies supporting the claimed benefits of memory foam — or the effects of any particular type of sleeping surface — are lacking.
This is true for a variety of reasons, she says. This type of sleep study can be expensive, if conducted independently. Or it is "chased" by a shadow of bias, if supported by industry.
Also, some sleep technology, such as memory foam, is relatively new, so it hasn’t been well studied. But perhaps one of the more difficult stumbling blocks to testing the health benefits of mattresses such as memory foam is the subjective nature of sleep. It is simply difficult to measure.
Sometimes the brain’s electrical activity, measured with an electroencephalogram (EEG), and other findings recorded during a sleep test don’t always match up perfectly with a person’s subjective experience, says Arand, who is the clinical director of the Kettering Sleep Disorders Center in Dayton, Ohio. "They might say, вЂI had a great night’s sleep,’ but the EEG parameters might not really indicate that."
Sleep is not only subjective, but preferences for sleep surfaces are individual, Arand says. "There’s quite a bit of variability between individuals in terms of what type of surface — whether it’s firm, hard, or soft — they prefer when they’re sleeping," she says. "As far as we know, there is no rhyme or reason for that."
Many of Arand’s patients who use memory foam have offered unsolicited glowing reports like these about memory foam: "I’m sleeping great." "Best sleep I’ve ever had." "I love going to bed at night." Arand says these anecdotal responses may be one-sided. That’s because she and other staff don’t ask all their patients about their sleep surfaces. "We may only be hearing the good stuff," Arand says.
Kathy R. Gromer, MD, sleep specialist with the Minnesota Sleep Institute in Minneapolis, agrees that memory foam may improve sleep. "It can, if it relieves painful pressure points," she says. But Gromer adds that memory foam doesn’t do anything for sleep apnea or other sleep-breathing disorders — and sleep disorders are the primary complaint of most her patients.
"When you lie on the memory foam, the heat from your body softens it in appropriate points," Arand says, "so this helps to support your body along the curves and natural lines of the body." Memory foam manufacturers claim this helps relieve pain and thereby promotes more restful sleep. And, though consumers often believe that very firm mattresses are best, more "giving" mattresses like these may lead to better sleep in people with back pain, according to the National Sleep Foundation.
Although there aren’t scientific data to support the hypothesis, Arand wonders whether memory foam sleep surfaces might be especially helpful for older people. For them, minimizing extra movement could reduce the number of times they awaken during the night. Being less aware of a bed partner’s movements might be an extra benefit, she adds. "Without the coiled springs, you feel your sleep partner’s movement less, and that might help, too."
What Are the Disadvantages of Memory Foam?
Gromer says that memory foam products may retain body heat, which could make them less comfortable in warm weather. However, Arand has not heard this complaint from her patients. "In our culture, most people can adjust their thermostats or blankets for the appropriate season," Arand says.
When new, memory foam can produce an odd chemical smell — a phenomenon called offgassing. To minimize this problem, the Sleep Products Safety Council, a sleep products trade group, recommends airing out the mattress or pad for at least 24 hours before putting sheets on it. "If you follow directions, the smell dissipates quickly," Arand says, "But I’ve never heard of anyone having reactions to it."
Are Memory Foam Products Safe for Young Children?
"I would strongly recommend avoiding this and similar very soft materials for use in infants’ beds," Gromer says. "That’s because soft bedding traps [carbon dioxide] and increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) deaths."

Like most major purchases made in life, you probably purchased your mattress with the intent that it would last as many years as possible. You might be wondering how long does a mattress last? For starters, most mattresses are designed and tested to last at least 10 years. The lifespan on the mattress really comes down to how often it’s used, the type of materials that make up the mattress, and how well it’s taken care of. There are definitely a lot of options on the market, but some mattresses are made to last longer than others, and how long should you keep a mattress is typically determined by their makeup, and their warranty.
ConstructionHow long is a mattress good for? The material makeup of your mattress matters when it comes to longevity. Organic, cotton mattresses, for example, won’t last nearly as long as man-made substances that break down slower over time.
Innerspring mattresses aren’t known to last particularly long, though they are often the first thing you think of when you hear “mattress.” This is because the springs inside can lose their elasticity and ability to spring back into shape over time. Typically, innerspring mattresses last between 7-10 years.
Latex and memory foam mattresses have been known to last about 10 years, though many are tested to last well beyond. A good indicator for how long a mattress is intended to last is how long the warranty extends.
Get The Most Out Of Your MattressSo what’s the best way to keep your bed protected so you can get the most years of use out of it?
You can start by making sure your mattress is sitting on a supportive foundation. You don’t need to have a boxspring but a strong, sturdy foundation is going to be your best option and help prevent sagging. An improper foundation could cause the mattress to end up with permanent sags and you’ll need to replace that mattress sooner rather than later.
You might think flipping it from time to time is the best way to ensure a long lasting mattress, right? This is still true for traditional mattresses (And may even be required by your warranty!) but foam mattresses may not need to be flipped. What Really Defines A “Lifetime?”What about that “lifetime warranty” I see on some websites?
Some mattress companies promise lifetime warranties or warranties lasting upwards of 25 years, so you may think that means you’re good for the long haul. While it can feel comforting to have that extra protection, these long-life warranties aren’t necessarily going to solve all issues that may arise. Make sure to read the warranty in its entirety!
Most lengthy warranties, those claiming to be 15 years or longer, are often prorated and you could end up having to pay a certain percentage of the cost of the repair or replacement, and they may not cover certain accidents.
