We’ve Been Sleeping on a Purple Mattress For Over a Year — Here’s What we Think
2016 could be dubbed the year of the online mattress. Even though they didn’t all launch this year, the bed in a box type mattresses such as Purple, Leesa, Casper, Tuft & Needle and Ghostbed are growing in popularity.
The Launch of Purple Mattress: Fall 2015
The mattress in a box niche started to take off around 2013. That’s also when Purple mattress invented a machine that could create and mold large pieces of Hyper-Elastic Polymer (the purple stretchy stuff in the top 2.5" of a Purple bed) into a king-sized mattress. This was new and it made it possible to create a mattress, roll it into a holder and mail it. It also made the price drop and that led to huge growth in online mattress sales.
Here’s the stuff they call a hyper elastic polymer that takes up the first 1.5 inches of a Purple mattress. It’s stretchy and bouncy on its own. On top of a mattress this is like a shock absorber. Great for not waking up the person sleeping next to you if you’re getting out of bed or tossing/turning. It also means you’re not sleeping on a solid state (helping airflow, cushioning your pressure points, etc). This mattress isn’t soft, but it’s not firm either. It’s more middle firm.
Purple mattress was launched via a very successful Kickstarter campaign in September of 2015. A month later the company raised $171,560. I organized a blogger outreach campaign to spread the video and get mattress reviews. So I was one of the first people to get a Purple bed.
Perhaps one of the biggest contributors to Purple’s success was The Harmon Brothers team (it wasn’t all them). They created an incredible viral video featuring goldilocks and the raw egg test. Before we saw it, I had bloggers each create a video that they shared on Facebook with a raw egg test. That is, you sit on a Purple cushion and place an egg on it. Instead of breaking the egg gets absorbed into the mattress. This illustrates a point that just like your body, the polymer cradles your pressure points and stops you from tossing and turning to get comfortable. That means you sleep better. Purple’s videos got 18 million views on YouTube and 86 million views on Facebook.
My husband and I created an unboxing video when we got ours. It now has over 200,000 views on YouTube and a lot of comments! Here it is:
After almost a year, I wrote my Purple mattress review and we created a video review.
This mattress revolution means that you don’t have to go mattress shopping at a mattress store. You don’t have to wonder if you will like your mattress when you get home. They let you sleep on it for 100 days or more and ship it back free if you don’t love and want to keep it. Plus, there aren’t a zillion names and combinations of mattresses that are just about impossible to compare. Prices are very reasonable.
In the past you had to go to a mattress store and lie on a bed to see if it felt right. The problem is lying on a mattress in the store it not the same as sleeping on a mattress. Try returning a mattress you hate. It’s not going to happen. So all of these mattress companies could afford to offer a killer guarantee. Sleep on the mattress for 100 nights and if you don’t like it, return it for a full refund. They also offer free shipping.
These are the main reasons I love Purple mattress:
- There is little movement transfer. The purple stuff is like a shock absorber. I can no longer feel when my husband moves around and that used to wake me up frequently.
- I expect it to last for a LONG time. I had a baby bed made with the same material. It was essentially a Purple mattress cushion with a cover on it. No foam. After 3 years of my daughter sleeping on it, there was zero wear and tear. This stuff is practically indestructible. Plus, I’ve been to the factory and saw that it can be ground down and reused.
- Non toxicity. This is a big deal. You breathe in whatever fumes your mattress releases and that’s bad news for most mattresses. However, when I visited the factory where Purple is made there was an amazing lack of odor. Same with when we opened our mattress.
- No peaks and valleys. Our other mattress which was considerably more money (more than double the price) had developed troughs where we laid down after just 5 years. It made it so you could barely move — or what Purple calls “body imprints”.
- Best mattress for back pain. There are a ton of factors that cause back pain and I’m not an expert on the topic. I have suffered aches and back pain when I’ve slept on a bad mattress. I’ve never had that problem with Purple.
- Purple will come and pick up your mattress and donate to charity (through partnerships like one with Relief Bed) if you are not happy with your mattress. I would caution though not to act too soon. For many people, including me, you need to give it at least 2 weeks before making a decision. For me those first 10 days were brutal as I adjusted. Now I wouldn’t plan on anything else. I actually buy almost everything Purple sells, including their mattress protector and pillows.
Purple sleeps cool — and I sleep cold. Again, I think it’s from the airflow. I have an electric blanket, the kind that has dual controls. In the winter I like warm jersey type sheets like the ones that Purple sells. Or here are the things you need with a Purple bed. Like most big purchases that should last a decade or more, once you buy the bed you need more. You need a mattress protector, platform, sheets and everything else to get the most performance from it. The thing about these beds is they don’t usually have box springs. So you need a platform. They have one. Purple says using box springs voids the warranty. I think it’s ridiculous because I’m not ditching my bed frame or box springs for a platform. However, it may work for you if you’re limited on space or need something that can pack or store easily.
I have to admit when I first heard the term “Purple” as a mattress company, I thought it was comical in the same way I thought OrangeSoda was (an online marketing company I worked for). But it works. We’re really happy with our mattress and plan to replace our guest bedroom mattress with a Purple when it’s time to replace it. I want to warn you though. You may not want to sleep on other mattresses once you adjust!

BEST MATTRESSES DETAILED
OUR STAFF PICKS
These are a few of the our team’s personal favorites. Whether they’re beds some people sleep or ones we voted on as the very best of the best, these mattresses are true standouts in our book.
With beds to satisfy nearly every need (in the budget-friendly Essential into the lavish Wave), Casper mattresses are worth all of the hype.
While I think most people could benefit from a night’s rest on a Casper, I’d primarily recommend them for anyone who suffers from chronic back or side pain. This is for a few reasons but largely has to do with the fact that All the brand’s mattresses employ hybrid construction, which combines different foams together for maximum pressure
Time to upgrade your mattress and looking through the bed in a box market for the first time? The DreamCloud is a great option for those that want the luxury feel and support of a traditional innerspring mattress with the simplicity of installation and value cost of a bed in a box.
The DreamCloud has a tall hybrid construction with pressure relieving foam on top and a pocketed coil support layer which offers a firm feel that’s excellent for back and stomach sleepers. Another piece of the construction that I really like is that the high density polyfoam edge support that allows people to sleep close to the side of the bed without collapsing the edges, a great feature for couples that need the whole surface of the mattress.
If you’re searching for an ultra-supportive bed, you may want to think about getting your hands on a WinkBeds mattress. Constructed with foam and two layers of coils, this bed is fantastic for both combo sleepers and heavier individuals who want a bit of lift to their mattress.
The bed also comes in three different firmness options, so you’ll be able to tailor the mattress to your particular sleep preferences. Another wonderful feature? The coil-on-coil structure produces a bunch of airflow throughout the construction, ensuring that things are going to stay nice and cool during the night.
If you’re sleeping on a mattress you inherited from your Great Aunt Theresa or one that a former roommate left behind in your flat, odds are you have surrendered yourself to the fact that it likely doesn’t satisfy your specific needs. But so what? It was free, right?
The area in which it probably lets you down the most is pressure relief, or its ability to soothe strain in problem areas such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Of all the changes you’ll see in a new mattress buy, the biggest is most likely the difference that comes from moving from the old mattress to one that provides ample comfort and relief. Suggestion: The latter is much, much better for you and your wellbeing.
You’ll find this strain relief in a number of ways, but I’d say the easiest is to go with a mattress which has a durable base (of either pocketed coils or high-density poly foam) complimented by thick layers of contouring foam. New Purple Mattress How Long Does It Last
If you’re fairly certain that your sleeping problems stem from a lack of pressure relief, I would suggest checking out the Purple mattress. The bed’s unique hyper-elastic polymer grid provides excellent comfort and relief to the lower back and shoulders because its walls fall to fill in the spaces at these regions.
Though this might not seem any different from the pressure relief you’d get from memory foam or latex, I would argue that this grid stands a head above the rest because of how supportive it is; basically, you get to sink in without feeling stuck in the arrangement. This will spell good news for a wide variety of sleepers who wish to feel as though they’re sleeping on top of the bed instead of in it.
The Leesa is a standout in this class for me because of how good it’s at providing uniform pressure relief across the body no matter one’s sleeping position.
While most all-foam beds are fairly good at providing relief to side and back sleepers, the Leesa is also able to meet stomach sleepers because of its top layer of Avena foam. This material is soft yet reacts quickly to pressure, lifting the sleeper up and positioning them in addition to the bed. This gives relief to the chest and hips, crucial problem areas for those who doze primarily on their stomachs.
If you’re following both pressure relief and temperature regulation, then I’d recommend checking out the GhostBed Luxe. Does this all-foam mattress provide targeted relief to sensitive areas, but it’s also outfitted with a lot of really innovative cooling tech.
On the pressure relief front, using memory foam and the brand’s proprietary Bounce Foam makes a stellar balance of sinkage and support. This means there’s both contouring to alleviate strain in the shoulders and lower back in addition to plenty of lift to keep the spine in a healthy alignment.
BEST MATTRESSES FOR BACK PAIN
Do you ever wake up in the morning with a dull, throbbing pain in your lumbar area? Do you toss and turn in the night seeking out that magical position which may alleviate the distress along your spine? If so, you could just suffer from chronic back pain and could possibly use a mattress upgrade to help with this back pain.
I should note that back pain can result from numerous lifestyle, genetic, and physical factors, so I like to consider changing your mattress as just one of several measures that could be taken to address the issue. If you’re suffering from back pain, it’s best to check with a medical professional to develop a plan that’ll tackle the underlying causes and symptoms. Bear in mind, nothing on this page should be taken as medical advice.
That having been said, a general rule of thumb is you will want a supportive bed (note that firmness does NOT always equal support) with a soothing foam top layer to fill in the space at your lumbar area. You will also want something which keeps your shoulders at a wonderful alignment with your hips and is, of course, comfy. New Purple Mattress How Long Does It Last
If your biggest woe comes from stress in your upper back, you’ll want to make sure you snag a bed that gives as much pressure relief in the lumbar area as it does in the shoulders. The key here is a soft yet supportive foam top layer that’ll offer an even combination of aid across the body. Enter the all-foam Leesa mattress.
I like this bed for back pain problems because of the order of its foam layers, using a section of buoyant Avena foam on top of one of memory foam. This placement may not seem like a huge deal, but it really does a lot of great work to relieve tension in the trunk. The sleeper gets to sink in for pressure relief but can also be buoyed on top of the arrangement , never having to sacrifice comfort for support.
For those athletic sleepers from the group who suffer back pain from long days spent at the gym or outside on the field, the Bear mattress could be an ideal bed for you. Designed with functionality in mind, the Bear is outfitted with graphite-infused memory foam for temperature regulation and comfort in addition to a Celliant-blend cover, which some studies suggest can assist with recovery.
The bed also sleeps firm, with my testers giving it an average firmness rating of 7, which you can compare to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness. This is a great level for most back sleepers, as it translates to solid support across the body.
A recent trend in mattress design would be to add zoned support from the layers of the bed. What this signifies is that one or two parts within a mattress will be comprised of not just a single sort of foam (say, memory foam) but a mixture of materials of different firmnesses. Essentially, the purpose is to target various parts of the body in various ways to achieve the ultimate in relaxation.
In my opinion, one of those best examples of zoned support out there may be seen in the Casper. The all-foam bed includes a transition layer built with two different kinds of poly foam: a softer one at the ends of the bed and a firmer one at the middle. This placement provides pressure relief to the neck and feet while also bringing solid support to the lumbar region, a fantastic combination for anyone dealing with back pain.
So far as mattresses are involved, there’s perhaps nothing more classic than an old-fashioned innerspring. These lively beds reigned supreme long before the arrival of all-foam models, and though they have definitely waned in popularity over the years, there are still a number of solid layouts available in the world.
However, what makes a great innerspring bed? In my opinion, an excellent innerspring has to sleep cool and possess excellent bounce as well as enough support to keep you from feeling stuck in the arrangement.
Though innersprings are usually better for back and stomach sleepers, those who doze primarily on their sides can still find a lot to enjoy in one of these mattresses, provided that they incorporate a foam comfort layer for stress relief.
One such bed that does this well is your WinkBeds mattress. Straightaway, the sleeper will experience two inches of super-soft gel memory foam, which offers immediate comfort and contouring to the shoulders and buttocks. Directly below this layer, you’ll discover a coil-on-coil design that evokes the buoyant support of classic innersprings. New Purple Mattress How Long Does It Last
If you suffer from back pain, you’ll want a mattress that is going to fill in the space at your lumbar region with a few targeted pressure relief. There aren’t a lot of innersprings that can do so, but thankfully, the Saatva’s got your back (see what I did there?) .
Not only does the coil-on-coil design create a bouncy mattress that keeps the sleeper on top of the construction, but the bed also features a zoned lumbar area specifically designed to alleviate back pain. This greatly reduces the amount of pressure that is going to form and generates amazing comfort.
BEST ADJUSTABLE FIRMNESS
As you have likely noticed, most of the info I have provided thus far is terrific for sleepers who know exactly what they want in their bed. But what about if you’re not so sure? Yes, you want pressure relief in your shoulders, but does this mean you have to sacrifice firmness? What about if your sleeping habits change on a dime based on what you do during the day?
If any of these ideas ring true, you might want to invest in a bed with adjustable firmness. These models include layers which could be switched around or modified depending upon your needs in the present time, oscillating between both firm and soft feels.
The Layla is an all-foam mattress unique in that it’s double-sided, therefore it can be oriented to feature a firm or soft texture depending on a sleeper’s preferences. I must note that while you might think this flippability would result in totally dramatic firmness differences, when my testers tried out the bed in both iterations, they gave the firmer side an average score of 6.5/10 and the softer side a 5.5/10.
This duality makes the Layla a good option for both single sleepers and couples, who will alter the feel of the mattress whenever they need to shake up things in the bedroom.
As the name suggests, the Luxi 3-in-1 mattress is a pretty distinctive product in the sleeping sphere, as it could be oriented to reach the feels of three completely different beds. What this essentially means is that the mattress’s four layers can be reversed, switched, and organized to produce either a soft, medium-firm, or firm sleeping experience. This is great for sleepers that aren’t completely sure about the kind of vibe they’re after or ones who just prefer to change things up every once in a while.
Another customizable option is this eco-friendly mattress from Naturepedic. This hybrid bed is built with a natural cotton cover, a thick layer of all-natural latex, and a section of individually wrapped coils for pressure relief and support.
An added bonus of the bed is that it is adjustable and comes in a couple of different firmness options, including firm, cushion firm, plush, and ultra plush. The layers you will need to make these distinct feels will arrive in four different boxes, which you will then assemble to your satisfaction. Additionally, if you sleep with a partner and are searching for a bed with different firmness levels, Naturepedic is more than happy to create a personalized split design for you and your bedmate. While some sleepers have particular feels they want from their mattresses (e.g., luxurious foam or elastic coils), an even larger majority of us prefer a combo platter of sorts when it comes to our beds. We like memory foam but don’t need five inches of the stuff to feel comfortable. We want sinkage, but not too much, and a dollop of contouring, but only if it’s counteracted by the bouncy support of pocketed coils.
If any of this sounds familiar, you may be on the market for a hybrid mattress. These beds ditch the”all-X” constructions of other models in favor of ones that combine materials for a sleeping experience that truly does it all.
The great thing about hybrid mattresses is their ability to combine the pressure relief of foam with the aligning support of springs and the DreamCloud does exactly that. The soft foam on top is wonderful for comfort and the latex layers actually help dissipate body heat to help sleep a bit cooler.
The DreamCloud’s pocketed coil system gives the mattress a solid feeling akin to a traditional innerspring mattress. The blend of latex layers and bounce from the coil system cause the sleeper to feel more on top of the mattress, allowing them to change positions without feeling stuck in the layers.
NEST BEDDING ALEXANDER HYBRID
With their ultra-supportive pocketed coil systems, many hybrids are great for sleepers who suffer with chronic pain. However, I’d say my favorite from the group would have to be the Nest Bedding Alexander Hybrid, which unites this service using a super-soft foam-quilted cover for stress relief.
This means that whenever you lie on the bed, you’re likely to experience immediate comfort as you sink through the cover and in the gel-infused memory foam directly below it. The materials are intended to fill in the space at your lumbar area and alleviate the formation of pressure points throughout your body.
BROOKLYN BEDDING SIGNATURE
And last but certainly not least, no hybrid type could be complete without a nod to the Brooklyn Bedding Signature. This hybrid mattress is a revamped version of the brand’s flagship mattress and combines lush foam using pocketed coils for an impressive sleeping experience.
Here, the relief component comes in four inches of the brand’s proprietary TitanFlex foam, a soft material that also responds quickly to pressure. This bounce is doubled once you add in the bed’s pocketed coil system, which imbues the mattress with a few outstanding lift. The resulting structure allows you to sink in for lovely comfort while also keeping you positioned on top of the mattress, a win-win in my book.
BEST MEMORY FOAM
What would a best mattress manual be without a section devoted to memory foam? Nearly every bed-in-a-box retailer uses the material in some manner, either quilted into a pay or as the primary relaxation layer of one of its mattresses. New Purple Mattress How Long Does It Last
As a bed material, memory foam is best known for its deep contouring and sinkage. At their best, these properties can supply the sleeper with enormous pressure relief and relaxation. However, the foam can also overheat and create too intense of a”hug” that’ll leave you feeling stuck in the mattress. The key, then, is balance and finding a mattress that knows how to do memory foam right.
Featuring several layers of memory foam (including a inch quilted into the cover), the Nectar mattress is an ideal match for anyone looking for a bed that truly embodies the timeless material. This translates to is a whole lot of sinkage and body contouring for some super satisfying pressure relief.
And while memory foam has a bit of a reputation for overheating, Nectar employs a gel extract in its foam layers to make certain that things stay cool while you sleep. Add to this a comparatively low motion transfer and you have got yourself a bed that’s as comfy for one as it is for two.
If you’re interested in purchasing a memory foam mattress primarily because of its pressure-relieving benefits, you may want to think about snagging one of the terrific beds from the Amerisleep package of mattresses. The line boasts five different models, which vary from AS1 (super firm) all the way to AS5 (pillowy soft).
While the firmness range this is quite extreme, what unifies these mattresses is their excellent use of memory foam. As employed in the Amerisleep lineup, the memory foam functions in tandem with the other materials to soothe restlessness, provide excellent comfort, and dissipate movement disturbance across the structure.
LOOM & LEAF
Another terrific memory foam option is your Loom & Leaf, which are my top pick for couples. It comes with a super-soft foam-quilted cover, a gel-infused comfort layer, and a section of memory foam for compression service.
This combo of lush materials allows the bed to truly embody all of the best characteristics of the traditional material, namely its deep body contouring and sinkage. In the event you and your partner are both fans of memory foam or could simply benefit from the awesome pressure relief it will provide, you can’t go wrong with this mattress.
If memory foam is not really your thing, maybe you’ll be in the market for a mattress built with latex. Unlike memory foam, this substance is known for its bounce, coolingsystem, and responsiveness, creating beds that are equally comfortable and buoyant.
For my money, the best latex mattresses use the foam to endow the structure with lift and breathability, either as a fun accent between softer layers or as a main star in its own right. Another great advantage of latex is that it is relatively easy to produce organically, making it a fantastic choice for environmentally conscious sleepers. New Purple Mattress How Long Does It Last
If you need something with a lot of bounce, consider going to get a firmer latex mattress like the Zenhaven. This one’s entirely built of all-natural Talalay latex, making for a compact bed that’s both buoyant and pressure-relieving.
While you’re likely to sink in slightly through the top comfort layer, the latex does a fantastic job of lifting the sleeper up and out of the structure, helping to keep the spine in a terrific alignment. And of course that this bed is reversible, featuring both a plush orientation (average firmness rating of 5.4/10) and a gentle firm one (average firmness rating of 6.75/10), which means that you can always change things up to satisfy your needs.
For those eco-friendly dreamers eager to get their hands on an remarkable latex mattress, the Cedar from Brentwood Home might be the ideal bed.
The mattress is built with a normal hybrid design of foam comfort layers and a tall section of individually wrapped coils, but what sets it apart are the green materials used throughout. An organic wool cover gives way to a series of all-natural latex layers, which make up the comfortable section of the bed. And below the pocketed coils, you will get a coconut husk foundation, which offers the structure with some equilibrium.
NEST BEDDING HYBRID LATEX
And lastly, there’s the Nest Bedding Hybrid Latex, which is my top pick for anyone looking for a latex hybrid.
This mattress is constructed with layers of organic cotton, all-natural Talalay latex foam, and pocketed coils, stacking up to an impressive 13 inches of relaxation. The combination of materials creates a pleasant medium-firm texture (my testers gave it an average firmness rating of 6.4/10) that provides plenty of pressure relief without that stuck-in-the-bed feeling. And as with other latex mattresses, this Nest bed sleeps super-cool.
Whether their substances warrant the expense or not, the unfortunate fact is that most beds are really expensive. While you must always think of a mattress purchase as an investment in your general well-being, this does not mean you need to shell out thousands of dollars to secure a great night’s rest.
In fact, there are a lot of marvelous beds out there that are not just incredibly comfortable but also cheap enough to leave both you and your wallet grinning from ear to ear. Continue reading for some best-value mattress picks.
My favorite mattress for the money is the GhostBed, which unites latex, gel-infused memory foam, and durable poly foam to get a sleeping experience that’s cool, supportive, and incredibly pressure-relieving. The mattress also has great motion transfer and border support, which makes for a well-rounded mattress that’s as good for a single sleeper because it is for a pair of bedmates with different sleep tastes. With all of these great qualities, this bed has to be super-expensive, right? Wrong! A GhostBed queen only costs $795, which is quite the steal in the internet mattress world.
TUFT & NEEDLE
Tuft & Needle has long been a favorite among bed-in-a-box fans, as much for its no-fuss foam construction because of its astoundingly low price point. When compared to other mattresses on the marketplace, its queen size cost of only $575 is super-affordable and available to sleepers of all different budgets. And when you add in its own excellent motion transfer, deep pressure relief, and buoyant, medium-firm feel, this is a mattress that is truly tough to pass up.
If you are looking to snag a great deal on a more luxurious mattress, look no farther than the Spindle. This bed is crafted with all-natural materials, including wool batting, organic cotton, and three layers of Dunlop latex. What’s unique about the Spindle is that it’s fully adjustable. After filling out a quick questionnaire (outlining your weight, age, and sleep tastes ), Spindle will send you a customized parcel of latex layers, which you will then assemble at home to your own specifications. The end result is a bouncy and cool mattress tailor-made to your comfort at a price that can’t be beat.
BEST MATTRESSES FOR COUPLES
When considering what makes a bed perfect for couples, I believe a few different factors. Namely, I’m interested in figuring out how much of the surface area of the mattress you’re going to be able to use and whether you’re going to be bothered by your partner’s moves in the middle of the night.
That means I will be drawn to beds that feature less movement transfer and excellent edge support. I’ll also be on the watch for mattresses that exhibit feels that cater to sleepers with different preferences, since even the most harmonious partners can snooze in distinct ways.
The Puffy mattress, dubbed “the Internet’s most comfortable mattress” was designed and developed with the newest technology and premium excellent foam layers. It’s handmade and 100% manufactured in the USA.
The mattress is excellent for all kinds of sleepers since it poses a moderate level of firmness together with a sleeping surface that seems just like a cloud.
After 4 decades of study, foam formulas, growth, sleep trials, and hundreds of hours of optimizing the memory layers, then the Puffy mattress was created and designed to guarantee a sleep surface that’ll be ideal for a deep, restorative sleep. New Purple Mattress How Long Does It Last
The Puffy mattress is just one of the most recent goods in the mattress marketplace and the organization believes they have crafted the best sleep system which will offer a cozy sleep on sleepers of all ages, sizes, and sleeping habits.
Whether you are simply moving in with a new partner or struggling to make ends meet after a big wedding, value can sometimes be the main factor for couples to consider when creating a big mattress buy. So before getting intimidated by some of the heftier price tags in this roundup, rest easy: I have you!
Say hello to the Nectar mattress. Built with a thick layer of memory foam, this mattress gives off a luxurious vibe for a fraction of the expense of similar mattresses on the market: At $795 for a queen, it’s practically a steal! This combined with the mattress’s exceedingly great movement transfer results make it a wonderful solution for couples on a budget.
As I mentioned up top, edge support is going to be among the main things for couples to consider, as it will let them know whether they’ll be able to use the whole surface of the bed. While there are a good deal of mattresses that offer great edge support, I’d say my favorite would have to be the Sapira.
This hybrid mattress is created by Leesa and employs a combination of Avena and memory foams for stress relief as well as a pocketed coil system for support. The interplay of these various materials produces a good sense of security that’s as powerful at the center as it is in the sides, ensuring that you will never feel like you’re going to roll out of bed in the middle of the night.
BEST FOR SIDE SLEEPERS
When buying a new mattress, side sleepers want to be extra-careful about the kind of bed they buy. If it’s too firm, pressure points are likely to form at the shoulders and hips. If it’s too soft, the sinkage could throw the spine out of alignment.
Personally, I find the best mattress kind for side sleepers is one that has gentle top layers for cushiony support as well as a good foundation to keep these plush materials stabilized. The trick is to get a mattress that pushes back as much as you push in so you never feel completely engulfed by the arrangement.
When side sleepers hear about the addition of pocketed coils in a bed, their first idea might be something along the lines of,”This bed is going to be far too firm for me!” At times, this is true, but other times, it is not. Take the Tomorrow Sleep, for example, which is designed with coils, yes, but also a ton of pressure-relieving foam.
The mattress comes in two firmness options (soft and firm), each of which include memory foam and poly foam edge support. I would suggest that side sleepers take a look at the soft version, as it comprises three inches of memory foam up top for some pleasant design and relief.
Billed as Casper’s most innovative mattress, the Wave is a fantastic option for side sleepers, as its five-foam-layer construction is designed especially with pressure relief in mind.
This construction involves an interesting mix of bouncy latex, plush memory foam, and durable poly foam, which produces both deep body contouring and a pleasant lift. So while your shoulders and hips are very likely to experience a good deal of cushiony support, this sinkage isn’t likely to leave you feeling trapped at the materials.
BEST AT SLEEPING COOL
For some of you out there, relaxation will be less about stress relief and support and more about temperature regulation. If you’re a sleeper that runs hot, your primary focus is likely going to be on figuring out the way to sleep as cool as possible.
As you start your search, remain on the lookout for beds with individually wrapped coils, as the spaces between the packets encourage airflow throughout the structure. Latex is also perfect for cooling, as the substance is excellent at absorbing and dispersing heat. Memory Foam is traditionally not the best at keeping things cool, but frequently, the substance will be infused with gel to fight this attribute.
BROOKLYN BEDDING AURORA
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora is a fantastic mattress for those who need to sleep cool. Boasting a hybrid design, the mattress is built with a super-tall pocketed coil support system (8 inches of individually wrapped coils), which generates dynamic breathability.
The mattress also has a phase change cover, which is actually cool to the touch and helps you to absorb the sleeper’s body heat. In addition to these terrific features, the Aurora also has excellent edge support and motion transfer, which would make it an wonderful option for couples seeking to keep things cool in the bedroom.
While there are a great deal of items for sleepers to love about a Purple (both its own pressure-relieving support and excellent movement transfer results come to mind), the attribute that may be most attractive is that it’s technically”temperature neutral.”
So what exactly does this term mean? Fantastic question! Essentially, it means that the bed’s hyper-elastic polymer comfort layer (yes, that purple grid) is particularly good at dispersing heat due to its open structure. This creates a pleasant balance throughout the mattress and ensures that one’s inner body temperature will not be a preventative factor in getting a good night’s sleep. New Purple Mattress How Long Does It Last
Marketed as the”coolest bed in the world,” the GhostBed Luxe was created for people that sleep hot.
The mattress combats overheating with a phase-change cover, which regulates body temperature, as well as a thick comfort layer of gel memory foam. As we discussed in the intro, gel infusions help counteract the overheating properties of the material, allowing sleepers to enjoy all of the foam’s great benefits (sinkage, body contouring, pressure relief) without becoming too hot.
ADDITIONAL BEST MATTRESS CATEGORIES
We’ve got loads of mattress picks across Sleepopolis, and below are a few other popular categories, including the best mattress for heavy sleepers (250 lbs and up), best for combo sleepers, and best for stomach sleepers. Be sure to check around our site for a lot more picks based on your own preferences, positions, and physique!
BEST FOR HEAVIER SLEEPERS
When looking for a new mattress, it can feel as if there are a lot of complicating factors to consider: materials, design, and cost are just a few. While these are all important things to think about, one factor which should never make your mattress search harder is your weight.
If you’re a heavier sleeper, this might seem easier said than done, but there are actually a great deal of fantastic beds out there built for sleepers of all different sizes, weights, and body types. These mattresses take everything that works well in other models (satisfying pressure relief, great support, cozy materials) and amp them up for an even more optimal sleeping experience.
My favourite mattress for heavier sleepers is hands down the Big Fig, as it was specifically designed for individuals who weigh more than 300 pounds.
A hybrid construction combines a top section of durable poly foams with bouncy pocketed coils for a firm and supportive feel. This mix of materials is finessed to maintain sleepers lying on top of the mattress rather than in it, which is important for those of you who tend to sink directly through softer layers. Plus, every Big Fig comes with a specialized foundation, which adds even more durability and shape to the overall structure.
For heavier couples, there’s no better mattress on the market compared to WinkBeds Plus. This mattress can also be outfitted with a hybrid design, which brings together bouncy latex with individually wrapped coils to get a sleep that’s as pressure-relieving as it is supportive.
I should add that the pocketed coil system is zoned, providing the mattress with even more specialized support. This means that you’ll able to use the entire surface area of the bed and are not going to feel stuck in the arrangement, which can sometimes be an issue for heavier sleepers lounging on beds not designed for their needs.
NEST BEDDING ALEXANDER SIGNATURE
Contrary to popular belief, memory foam isn’t the enemy of heavier sleepers. Though some say the material’s classic contouring and sinkage properties don’t offer enough support to sleepers of different dimensions, I would argue that when coupled with the ideal materials, memory foam can bring a lot to the party!
A wonderful example of how this works is at the Nest Bedding Alexander Signature. The sleeper immediately meets a thick slab of 4-inch memory foam, which yields incredible body contouring. But after sinking through this layer, they’ll encounter a collection of firmer foams, which help establish a healthy spine alignment and a great deal of solid support.
BEST FOR COMBO SLEEPERS
Having trouble deciding if you’re a stomach, back, or side sleeper? Do you tend to fall asleep in one position and wake up in a totally different one? Perhaps you’re what I like to refer to as a combo sleeper, or someone who dozes in numerous positions.
What this means for your mattress hunt is that you’re basically going to be searching for a bed having an abysmal feel, preferably one that strikes a satisfying balance between all its different materials. So if it is a hybrid, as an instance, you will want to make certain the pressure relief of the foam does not cut into the support of the pocketed coils and vice versa.
Below, take a look at some of the beds that I think strike this balance particularly well.
For those who spend time slumbering in multiple positions, there is no better pick than the flagship Leesa mattress. The balanced foam texture unites pressure relief and support for a sleep that is guaranteed to satisfy a wide assortment of sleepers.
I should note that the bed is on the firmer side (my testers gave it an average firmness rating of 7/10) and does a great job of lifting the hips up and out of the structure. Plus, the mattress’s top layer of Avena foam imbues the bed with an additional oomph of supportive bounce to fight that stuck-in-the-bed feeling.
Speaking of supportive bounce, one of the bounciest beds I have tried up to now in 2018 is the New Purple. This hybrid revamp of the brand’s flagship model comes in three different firmness levels, all of which are designed to satisfy a broad assortment of sleepers.
In addition to this buoyant lift from the layer of pocketed coils, the mattress also features a ton of pressure relief thanks to its hyper-elastic polymer comfort grid. This section is great at evenly distributing weight throughout the bed, allowing it to specifically respond to different amounts of pressure from every part of the body. It follows that regardless of how you sleep, you’re bound to come across some pretty incredible comfort.
Designed with a combination of memory foam and high-density poly foam, the Nectar is a super-comfortable mattress that provides awesome pressure relief in numerous positions.
While the almost four inches of memory foam up top may make back and stomach sleepers run for the hills, the mattress actually has a wonderful moderate firmness to it, which means you will find a solid mix of sinkage and support. This texture will satisfy a great deal of different sleepers, from those who need cushioning in the shoulders all of the way to those needing targeted relief in the lumbar region.
BEST MATTRESSES FOR STOMACH SLEEPERS
If you are a stomach sleeper, you’ll want to find a firm mattress that will place your shoulders and hips in an even line. Sound easy enough? Unfortunately, not necessarily. A whole lot of beds that bill themselves as being firm forfeit great support from the name of said firmness, leading to mattresses that don’t do much of anything at all. New Purple Mattress How Long Does It Last
So the question remains: Are there beds out there that can keep a stomach sleeper’s body flat enough for healthy spinal alignment while also being comfortable? The answer is a resounding YES!
For some examples, check out my favorite mattresses for stomach sleepers below.
Featuring coil-on-coil construction, the WinkBeds hybrid creates a wonderful mattress alternative for stomach sleepers. The combination of both microcoils and pocketed coils creates an ultra-supportive sleeping experience that keeps the sleeper positioned on top of the mattress.
An added bonus is that the mattress also includes a plush pillow top for stress relief and comes in three different firmness options, so you will definitely be able to locate a model that fits with your specific sleep needs.
For those stomach sleepers in search of an all-foam mattress, you can’t really go wrong with the Zenhaven, which derives a bounty of buoyant support from its all-latex structure.
As you’ll probably experience a little bit of sinkage once you first lie down on the bed, you might find that the layers work together to buoy you on top of the mattress. This is great for stomach sleepers, who need to maintain their shoulders and buttocks from sinking too far into the structure, which can throw their spinal alignment way out of whack. I should say that the Zenhaven comes in two firmness options: plush or firm.
Very Best MATTRESS REQUIREMENTS AND SCORING
Choosing the best mattress manufacturers for 2018 wasn’t an easy task. There are hundreds of organizations in the world, and that I tested out and reviewed dozens of different versions in my quest to answer the seemingly innocuous question: what’s the best mattress?
And even though I have landed on what I believe are some really fantastic selections, I want to admit that this list is always evolving and that my opinions will probably change as newer beds emerge in the marketplace.
That being said, all mattresses included on this list had to meet the following criteria:
My selections for the best mattresses to buy in 2018 all had to be accessible 2017 for at least six months before this review, with a small advantage given to those models on the market for a year or longer.
Why is this important? For one thing, the longer a business’s been in business, the more confidence I have in its ability to deliver on warranty promises, return policies, and merchandise availability. Second, it tells me that people are reacting to its products, which means the materials are durable as well as the layouts are well-executed. And finally, it implies that the organization will be around for the long haul, which makes it a solid investment.
In my opinion, the overall customer experience is at least as important as an exceptional product. If a brand has an remarkable bed but negligent customer service representatives or confusing policies, I can not in good faith include it on this list.
So how do I ensure that a firm has top-notch customer service? I’m constantly scouring the Web for third party reviews, looking carefully to see if users are neglected or received lackluster service from a specific retailer. In addition, I keep my eyes on social media for any brand red flags, which I then investigate on my own.
Furthermore, I rely on all of you! If I notice that our great Sleepopolis readers are responding in a particularly good or bad approach to a company, I’ll correct my positions accordingly, always giving precedence to brands which have a killer track record of positive customer service testimonials.
As more and more bed-in-a-box companies surface in the digital ether, value has become an increasingly important element for me to consider when selecting the best mattresses of any given calendar year.
When I refer to value, I am not just talking about a very low price point. A excellent value is achieved when the selling price is well below the average market cost for what you would ordinarily will need to pay for a mattress of the quality and functionality. This manner, mattresses at all points on the pricing scale can be considered an exceptional price.
Last, but certainly not least, let’s talk about business integrity. While different folks will consider ethics in different ways, for me, it comes down to a few crucial questions:
- How can a company treat its customers, both those that are happy and those that have complaints?
- How transparent is a brand about the types of materials it uses and from where it resources those materials?
- Has the company received any accolades voted on by users?
- What, if any, outreach did the company do in 2017? In 2018?
- What are a few of the brand’s key values? How does it enact these values in its daily operations?
It doesn’t take long to work out the answers to these questions, and once I do, I use them to notify my positions as much as relaxation or price. In my experience, the best mattress manufacturers are those which not only want to be the best but truly need to do right by the sleepers who rest in their beds night after night.
If you’re in search of the ideal mattress, there are a few other questions you may want answered as well.
WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A MATTRESS?
To find their best mattress, most buyers will consider price, firmness, adjustability, and sleep style before purchasing. You might want to check with your doctor first if you experience any sort of pain after sleeping. This can help you choose the best mattress for you.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED A NEW MATTRESS?
How long is a mattress supposed to continue? No matter what sort of mattress you buy, most should be replaced every ten years for a good night’s rest and optimal relaxation. Even if you find your dream mattress, you will want to consider a replacement in 10 years. New Purple Mattress How Long Does It Last

Anyone ordered or tried one of these? I have only heard good things so far and the marketing video they put out is good. But want a second opinion before I buy.
Beds using this type of comfort layer aren’t new by any means. A collapsing column gel bed is out there already. I think the main company using it is called Intellebed, but I’m sure others do as well. Leggett and Platt (one of the largest component suppliers in the US) is marketing their version of it.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they were the manufacturer of the stuff Purple uses, since they’re probably aren’t a lot of places than make that type of product. Beyond that I’ve never tried a bed like that. Typically I don’t care for the online companies because of how they market and because of all the affiliate marketers of there clouding the information. I do love the commercial, however I would check out some local stores and you’ll probably find some better deals there.
You know, my biggest problem with Purple is the Kickstarter thing. A mattress company launched as a result of a successful Kickstarter campaign sure does sound exciting. But then you look at the page and it says "320 backers pledged $171,560". 320 backers.
It doesn’t make to tell someone to change their body to better fit their mattress.
