Why are people obsessed with Casper mattresses? I slept on one for three years to find out

The best mattress is the one you stop thinking about.

If you’re shopping for a new mattress, you’ve probably had to wade through an ocean of jargon and about a million photos of people smiling as they recline on (let’s face it) identical-looking, spongy white rectangles. I’ve been there, too.

As traditional retailers like Mattress Firm and Sears disappear, online purchasing has only gotten more prevalent. And while shop-at-home convenience and money-back guarantees are a huge draw, I had a hard time distinguishing the actual differences between all the mattress-in-a-box brands like Leesa, Tuft & Needle, Purple, Nectar and others.

But after reading reviews until my eyes watered, I took the plunge and purchased a Casper mattress (available at Amazon for $995.00) . That was over three years, and here’s what I can tell you as a Casper owner: I’m satisfied.

(Note:In the interim since I bought my Casper, the team at Reviewed began in-depth mattress testing. Collectively, our favorite is Nectar, which was praised for striking an ideal firmness/softness balance. However, I still love my Casper, which only serves to further underscore the subjective nature of mattress reviewing. Comfort is king, after all, and I’m sleeping just fine.)

Shopping for a new mattress usually starts at 3 A.M., sleepless and in the dark.

I complained about our old mattress for at least two years before I did anything about it. Waking up achy after a night of tossing and turning on a squeaky old bed, throwing another “We really oughta’…” onto a pile of empty threats before heading for the shower.

How many times did I hear Marc Maron or one of the countless other podcasters extol the virtues of a Casper mattress before I finally took a chance? How many mattress reviews beyond this did I read before pulling the trigger? Too many, in retrospect.

I bought a Casper mattress over three years ago, but it took about a year before I realized just how much I liked it. How did I finally know? Because I stopped thinking about mattresses altogether—truly the hallmark of a mattress doing its job.

Mattresses are unique among the things we own. We spend more time with them than any other consumer good (except perhaps our phones), yet we really only consider them when they’re either brand-new or when they’re utterly failing.

There are undoubtedly better mattresses out there. Oprah sleeps on a $100,000 bed. I do not sleep on a $100,000 bed. I sleep on an $800 bed and I’m very happy. Here’s why.

Unboxing a Casper mattress is an event unto itself

If owning a Casper mattress is blessedly unmemorable, getting one delivered sure makes an impression. Unlike traditional mattresses, it comes rolled up like a spring-loaded burrito. At 70 pounds (for the full size), it’s about twice as heavy as the mattress we were replacing and proved comically difficult to get up the stairs.

Unboxing it was just plain fun. Casper clearly put a lot of thought into designing the experience—right down to the little letter opener-style knife to slice open the shrink wrap without damaging the mattress. We just had to make sure the mattress was in position on the bed frame before we cracked it open.

The final cutting away proved, thankfully, less explosive than anticipated. Rather, the mattress’ foam layers unfurl and expand as it takes its first deep breath in your new home. Just thinking about it makes me want to go home and crawl into bed for a quick nap. (Keep reading. I’m just resting my eyes.)

Sure it looks small, but that box is CRAZY heavy. Still worth it, though.

It’s tough to argue with a 100-day return policy.

The extended money-back guarantee—a 40-day trial period when I bought mine, and now up to 100 days—was ultimately the factor that got me to click “buy.” I figured that takes a fair amount of confidence from a manufacturer. It’s way more than enough time for back sleepers, stomach sleepers and side sleepers to figure out whether the pressure points inherent in their old mattresses have been done in by Caper.

If you pause to think about it, they can’t resell a used mattress. Plus they have to spend cash on a delivery team just to pick it up from your house—there’s no way you’re going to put this thing back in the box yourself. This is some amazing customer service.

In Casper, I saw a company putting its money where its mouth was. I was convinced.

The best mattress in the world? Probably not. But the right one for me.

I can say with certainty that Pinocchio’s in Harvard Square and Otto’s are tied for the best pizza in Cambridge, MA because I’ve had pizza from basically every joint in the city. I’m an authority.

My dog (who’s obviously intelligent) also loves hanging out on the new mattress.

I cannot say that Casper is the best mattress in the world for precisely the same reason. I haven’t slept on every mattress in the world. This is also why I’m not going to bore you with a bunch of facts about foam density or how it stacks up against Purple, Tuft & Needle, and other new-school mattress companies that have sprung up. I can read the spec chart as well as anyone, but I can’t testify to their actual differences. (Update:the rest of the Reviewed team has begun testing mattresses since this article was originally published.)

I’m speaking purely from personal experience. But in my defense, I always do my homework and I’m pretty damn opinionated about products. Also, my satisfaction with Casper seems to be in good company amongst the mattress nerds. It’s not a firm mattress. It’s not a soft mattress. It’s just the right mattress for me—and very likely, for you as well.

I purchased the full-size and only paid a little more than I did for my iPhone, and I don’t rely onthatto keep my vertebrae in their right place, do I? Some things are worth investing in.

Bottom line: I bought a Casper and then I stopped thinking about mattresses. Don’t you wish you could say the same?

What are the different kinds of Casper mattresses?

When I purchased three years ago, Casper only offered one variety of mattress, available in all the usual sizes. Since then, the line has expanded to include additional mattresses options, as well as pillows, bedding, bed frames… even a dog bed.

The original Casper mattress is still sold today and is simply calledThe Casper, and starts at $595 ($995 or less for a queen). It’s the most popular model they sell. You have the option for all-foam or a hybrid of foam and springs for an additional $100.

The Waveis the upgrade model. Starting at $1,295 ($2,395 for a queen), it costs significantly more but promises more layers, more support, and a cooler night’s rest for hot sleepers.

The Essentialis the starter model. From $395 ($600 for a queen), it’s slightly thinner and has the fewest layers.

Where to try or buy a Casper

Casper was formerly an online-only business, which was a huge part of its appeal. You got to skip the hellscape of a traditional mattress store and try out the mattress in your own home for over three months.

Now, however, there are several options for seeing a Casper in-person before you buy. There are a select number of Casper Sleep Shops (see store locator), little boutiques that focus solely on Casper products. Target, an investor in Casper, also floors them in many locations. West Elm used to carry them, but it appears that they’re now partnering with Leesa.

All retailers charge the same price for Casper mattresses, including Amazon. If you see a suspiciously low sale price, double-check that it’s not some weirdo selling you a used mattress. All legit retailers should also offer the same 100-day return policy.

72 Hours With the Casper Mattress

The pros of a good night’s sleep go beyond taming 3 PM yawns. Getting the requisite seven or eight hours a night provides real health benefits: It can help lessen chronic pain, leads to a more productive sex life, and strengthens your immune system, among others. Dedicating that block of time to sleep is important, but so is the mattress — that thing you’ll eventually spend a third of your life on. We tested a king size Casper foam mattress over three days to see if this bed-in-a-box provided the support needed for quality sack time, while making other bedroom activities easier.

Day 1:Memory foam mattresses have been popular for years as a way around the inconsistent pressure points of a spring bed. We’ve had one before, and early on that foam worked well: less tossing, reduced aches and pains, and better mornings because we slept right through someone else’s trip to the bathroom. But it wasn’t long before the mattress developed a fissure, or more accurately, a pit under our ass. That lack of support throws the hips out of alignment with the spine, and having to crawl out of a body-shaped abyss in the morning wasn’t fun either. We were skeptical when the Casper showed up in a manageable box only slightly bigger than a dorm refrigerator. The entire mattress was compressed in a giant plastic bag — imagine the largest, most powerful food vacuum system ever. Casper provides a letter opener to slice the plastic away. Once placed over the box springs and freed from its plastic confines, the bed grew like a children’s toy. In less than a minute, it was wrinkle-free and with no notable off-gassing smell.

Day 2:Instead of using one foam in the mattress, Casper uses three different kinds to deliver a medium-style firmness. The top layer is made from a 1.5-inch thick slab of latex foam, which provides more of a standard mattress-like bounce and support. Casper says it also keeps you cooler, which it turns out, is a bigger deal than we thought. Foam beds have a toasty reputation because your body’s weight presses into the foam, creating a snug-fitting mold. That leaves less room for air circulation and more heat buildup and sweating. Because the Casper is firmer, there is less of a defined pocket around you and better airflow. The company claims the latex top layer is 20 times more breathable than most memory foams on the market. Beneath that is an equally thick layer of traditional memory foam, which is slightly less cushiony than traditional foam. The base layer is made from polyurethane for support. There is certainly more support in this mattress than our older foam, and it took a night to get accustomed to, especially as a side sleeper. We tend to keep sleeping conditions in the room cooler with lightweight blankets, shorts, and by going sockless, so quantifying the breathability of the latex was difficult, though there was more airflow around the body.

Day 3:We grew more accustomed to the springiness of the foam and decided to test it with weights. We dropped a 10-pound dumbbell onto the Casper, and it bounced twice. The same weight just sank into our other foam mattress. To test firmness, that same weight sank into the Casper mattress — 1/4-inch less than our other foam mattress. By day three we noticed that, unless your partner makes a terrible ruckus getting out of bed, you should remain undisturbed. And as a final test, sex on the Casper was infinitely more enjoyable and the extra bounce helped in nearly every position.

Casper Original Mattress Review

Since its founding in 2012, Casper has definitely been at the forefront of the online mattress revolution; based on sales and the recent opening of numerous brick-and-mortar stores, it is especially clear that Casper is one of themost popular brandson the market.

While the company has added a number of new models to their line, they started with one model, the original Casper mattress; this is the bed-in-a-box mattress thatset off a mattress revolution.

I have personally reviewed the Casper a few times, but the company does update their designs almost every year – I was especially interested to seehow the new model would perform relative to previous models.

Read on for my in-depth Casper mattress review and overall personal experience.

Casper is a great value that is also agreat fitfor all three sleeping positions. You can get10% Offa Casper mattress simply byclicking the link below.

The Casper Is Ideal For…

  • Combination sleepers. The Casper features a unique Zoned Support system that stands out in the marketplace – this system provides increased support toward the center of the mattress and increased comfort near the shoulder area. Because of this design, the Casper will feel more significantly more supportive for back and stomach sleepers; at the same time, side sleepers will experience great pressure relief. Because of the carefully crafted construction, the Casper is an especially excellent option for those who switch between their back and side during the night.
  • Those who desire a comfortable mattress. Many companies advertise that they offer the most comfortable mattresses; I have personally reviewed a number of the best-selling mattresses, and I will say that the Casper is definitely one of the most comfortable I’ve experienced. Side sleepers should feel shoulder and hip pressure evaporate and not experience any issues with pain.
  • Those who are seeking a balanced foam feel. The Casper does contain soft foams in its construction. However, these foams combine memory foam and latex qualities that give the mattress a balanced feel overall. This makes the mattress both comfortable and supportive simultaneously; this will make it less difficult to reposition oneself during the night for most sleepers.
  • Hot sleepers. Temperature regulation is an especially important criterion for many sleepers because overheating can wake up people during the night. Foam mattresses often have issues with regard to heat; from my experience, I can attest that memory foam can trap body heat and make for a significantly hotter night of sleep. However, the Casper does not seem to have this issue for a plethora of reasons. The mattress features open-celled foams that should keep the mattress breathable and cool.

The Casper Might Not Be Ideal For…

  • Those who prefer a soft or very firm mattress. The Casper is slightly softer-than-average based on my experience; however, the mattress is not very soft, nor is it very rigid. Those who prefer a mattress at the extremes of the firmness scale might need to continue their search.
  • Stomach sleepers. Those who sleep primarily on their stomach might not find enough support on the Casper; the center zone is especially firm, but it might not be supportive enough. Stomach sleepers could feel their hips sinking into the Casper, and this could cause them to experience back pain and strain in some cases.
  • Those who want an innerspring or memory foam feel. Devotees of traditional or memory foam mattresses might not like the responsive feel of the Casper – the Casper has a balanced foam feel and does not offer the serious bounce of coils or slow-moving feel of memory foam.

Casper is a great value that is also agreat fitfor all three sleeping positions. You can get10% Offa Casper mattress simply byclicking the link below.

Construction

  • The mattress is12” tall.
  • The Casper’s cover is thin and soft.
  • The top layer is 1.5” oflatex-like foam.
  • The second layer is 1.5″ of faster-reacting memory foam.
  • The next layer is 1.5” layer ofzoned transition foam.
  • The base layer contains 7” of durable support foam.
  • The Casper ismade in the USA.

Construction Takeaways

  • The top, latex-like layer features avery responsive overall feel; this responsive foam provides a good amount of bounce that many sleepers would love to experience.
  • The top layer is also open-celled, and this design makes the top of the mattress significantly more breathable. As air is allowed to flow through the mattress, it helpsregulate the temperatureof the Casper.
  • The memory foam layer does provide particularly good pressure relief to the Casper, but it is also somewhat responsive; this makes it easier to reposition at nightwithout feeling trappedby the mattress.
  • The transition layer features Zoned Support so that it is firmer in the center of the mattress and softer under the shoulder area; this means the mattress will feelfirmer when on the stomachor back and softer on the side.
  • The Zoned Support makes the mattress an especially good selection for multiple sleeping positions – it is supportive enough for back sleepers and some stomach sleepers and comfortable enough for the majority of side sleepers.

How Does This Mattress Compare To The Other Casper Models?

As I mentioned above, there are now numerous Casper models to choose from. Let me elucidate onwhy the Casper stands outfrom the other models.

Comparing the Casper to the Casper Essential, it is a significantly better match for more types of sleepers – unless the sleeper is under 150 lbs, the Casper will undoubtedly offerbetter support and comfortthan the Essential. It costs a bit more than the Essential but has much more to offer.

At the same time, the Casper offers mostly the same comfort and support as the Casper Hybrid. They have a very similar feel and unless one has extra support needs, theCasper is more affordable.

The Casper Wave and Casper Wave Hybrid are the company’s higher-end models – they have a more complex design and feature a more complex zoned construction, but theycost significantly morethan the original Casper mattress.

All in all, the Casper has a pecuniary advantage over these other models. It may not have coils or all the features of the Wave or Wave Hybrid, but it is still acomfortable, supportive mattress.

Prices

The table below provides the current prices for each of Casper’s sizes to give you a sense of how expensive the mattress will be for you.

SizesDimensionPrice
Twin38" x 75" x 12"$595
Twin XL38” x 80” x 12"$695
Full53” x 75” x 12"$995
Queen60” x 80” x 12"$1,095
King76” x 80" x 12"$1,295
Cal King72” x 84” x 12"$1,295

Firmness/Feel

In terms of firmness, the Casper mattress felt close to a6/10, a bit softer than average. The mattress is very soft on top but, pushing in, the hand hits the firmer layers below.

The mattress also features Zoned Support. This means that the mattress is actuallyfirmer toward the centerof the mattress. Casper designed the mattress so that it feels more supportive on the back and stomach and more comfortable on the side – it is a duality that many sleepers enjoy.

Allow me to elucidate how the Casper feels in different positions.

  • Back sleeping, I am well supported on the Casper mattress; my hips sink in just the right amount and the Zoned Support supports my lumbar area.
  • The mattress feels very comfortable when I am on my side, and the mattress is softer under my shoulder area, so I feelexcellent pressure reliefside sleeping.
  • When I am stomach sleeping, the mattress offers reasonable support, but those who sleep primarily on their stomach will probably needsomething more supportive.

Overall, the Casper features abalanced foam feelthat is really an amalgam of latex and memory foam qualities. The top layers are soft yet responsive; they have latex and memory foam qualities, and there is also some bounce. They allow me to sink in, but Ido not feel like I am getting stuckin the mattress.

Motion Transfer

Couples should contemplate how well their mattress handles motion transfer – will the partners disturb one another at night orwill they be sleeping soundly?

To test out the motion transfer on the Casper, I balanced a glass of water on one side of the mattress. When I pressed my hand into the opposite side of the mattress, mimicking the motions of a shifting partner, Idid not see much disturbancein the water. Overall, the performance in this particular case was fantastic.

I then lay down and asked Marten to move around on the other side of the Casper. He entered the bed, changed positions, and then bounced near the edge – Ifelt only a few of his movements and generally wasn’t disturbed.

Sleeping partners should not disturb one another greatly on the Casper, so this could be a decent mattress for couples.

Edge Support

Couples should also consider a mattress’s edge support so that they can maximize the surface area of the mattress. Partners want to ensure they can both sleep toward the edges of the mattress so that they are not confined to the middle of the mattress.

Sitting down on the edge of the Casper, the mattress does collapse a bit, but I generally feel secure enough to lean forward and tie my shoes. Lying down near the edge, I feel somewhat likeI might roll off the mattressbut not much.

Overall, the Casper features decent edge support that a lot of sleepers may enjoy.

Marten’s Take

Marten works as a staff writer at Mattress Clarity, and he has a much different body type than me. He is 6’7″ in height and weighs nearly 230 lbs. I, on the other hand, am 5’9″ and 160 lbs. It is paramount that one consider their size and weight when searching for a mattress. Here is what Marten thought about the Casper mattress:

While Joe believed the Casper was a 6/10 in terms of firmness, I thought it was closer to a 6.5 or 7/10. I am a significantly larger person so I am pressing further into the Casper and feeling some more firmness than Joe did.

Now, let’s discuss how I feel sleeping on the Casper and my general experience overall.

  • Starting on my back, I feel very well supported. My hips sink in the perfect amount, and the Zoned Support is holding up my lumbar area. I also feel a fair bit of contouring – the Casper really is a fantastic match when I am back sleeping.
  • Moving to my side, I am feeling some more pressure on my shoulders and hips than Joe did, but I feel it is a decent match for side sleeping.
  • Finally, on my stomach, I am feeling some support, but heavier sleepers who prefer stomach sleeping may want to find a more supportive mattress.

Marten’s experience is hardly surprising. As a larger person, he isfeeling some more pressurewhen he is on his side. As I said, the mattress might not be supportive enough for some stomach sleepers; Marten is feeling some support but maybe not enough.

How To Unbox This Mattress

The Casper original is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will comecompressed and shipped in a box. Begin by removing the rolled up Casper from its box, then preferably with another person’s assistance, position the roll on the bed.

Carefullycut the away the first layers of plasticuntil the still-compact mattress can be laid down flat, then pierce through the final layer of plastic, and theCasper will expand. Simply clear away the excess plastic and allow the mattress to breathe and fully expand.
