To steam clean mattress is an excellent way to thoroughly clean your mattress. However, before you steam clean your mattress, there’s something you need to be aware of. Steam cleaning your mattress will inevitably wet and dampen your mattress and wet mattress is a bad news. Mattress saturated with moisture is a breeding haven for mold and bacteria and it won’t take long till your mattress is completely ruined.

Before you decide to steam clean mattress, you should know that steam cleaning tends to remove the colors from the mattress. Something you should keep in mind.

Unless you own a steam cleaner, you are going to need to hire professional upholstery cleaner or rent a machine yourself. When you steam clean mattress, you should perform it in the morning on a warm, sunny day so you can take your mattress out on the sun to dry it completely after you’ve steam cleaned mattress. It’s important to minimize wetting the mattress when you steam clean mattress. Key here is less water and more vacuum strength.

If you are not comfortable with the idea of steam cleaning your mattress, you can perform a safer and more organic cleaning method and still enjoy a similar method. Make a cleaning solution by diluting a mild dish soap and warm water. Remember not to use too much water. Usually a couple of squeezes of dish soap for a cup of water work fine.

You will want to use a spray bottle to apply your solution to minimize the water from penetrating into the mattress. Make sure you spray a thin coat of the solution. Gently scrub the mattress using a sponge and blot dry the mattress using clean dry towels. Next vacuum your mattress thoroughly. After you’ve finished cleaning the mattress, use a blow drier to completely dry off your mattress or take it out on the sun.

I cannot stress how important it is to prevent your mattress from being damp to prevent mold and bacteria forming on your mattress. You should take every measures you can take to minimize wetting the bed and dry the mattress completely afterwards.

A soggy mattress soon takes on a musty smell, and within a day or two, may even begin to grow mold deep inside it. Of course, not every wet mattress is salvageable. If the mattress was in a flood, the water likely was contaminated with biohazards and dangerous chemicals or fuel. In that case, even if you could sanitize the inside of the mattress sufficiently, mold from lingering moisture could invade unseen. Mattresses that avoid complete saturation — such as those wet from spills, rainwater leaks, water used to put out a minor fire or similar sources — can be salvaged, as long as you work quickly and dry them thoroughly.

Blot up the moisture if the spill or wet area was minor and small. Use a clean, absorbent cloth or towel and apply as much pressure as possible to force the moisture out of the mattress, into the drying pad. Follow with a hairdryer, set on high. Hold the hairdryer a few inches from the mattress surface and apply heat for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Allow the area to cool down completely before determining if it is dry or not. After 30 minutes, proceed to another drying method.

Sprinkle clean kitty litter over the mattress surface. Apply pressure to the litter to force moisture out of the mattress and into the absorbent littler. Place a towel or cloth over the litter before pressing, if you prefer. Wait an hour or two and press again. Suck up the litter with a wet/dry vacuum. Repeat with fresh litter if moisture remains, then vacuum. Follow with heat from a blow dryer or proceed to another drying method if moisture remains.

Flip the mattress up, on its side, and securely prop it in place so there is at least 2 feet of air space on either side. Place a fan at the end, blowing down both sides, or use two fans to point directly at the mattress on either side. Open windows in the room and turn on ceiling fans, as applicable, to create as much air movement in the room as possible. Turning up the heat, using a space heater — set as a safe distance from the mattress — or similar measures also help accelerate drying.

Alternatively, take the mattress outside. Set up a platform, if possible, such as concrete blocks or sawhorses, to rest the mattress on and allow maximum air movement. Otherwise, turn the mattress on its side and securely prop it up. Allow the mattress to stay outside in the wind and sun until it is dry. Speed the drying process with a couple of fans, hooked up to extension cords, pointed at the mattress. Return the mattress inside once it is completely dry.

How to Dry a Mattress Quickly – 5 Easy Steps

A water leak, a minor spill, a major spill – we all know that accidents happen. Sometimes your bed is the injured party, so knowing how to dry a mattress easily in your own home is very useful. If your mattress has been exposed to moisture, it’s important to start the drying process as soon as possible, as mold and mildew can set in very quickly in a humid, warm environment.

It’s important to note that if your mattress is completely saturated with water, or has been underwater for over 24h, it may not be salvageable. The same applies if the water it was exposed to is contaminated or contains biohazards, as dangerous chemicals or other substances could remain inside even after drying.

Additionally, foam mattresses unfortunately can’t usually be saved but an attempt can be made nonetheless, using the same method below.

What You’ll Need to Dry Your Mattress:

  • An absorbent towel or cloth
  • A hairdryer
  • Kitty litter or baking soda (either works)
  • A wet/dry vacuum
  • A well-ventilated room or a sunny outside area
  • Fans (optional)
  • Space heaters (optional)

Blot with Absorbent Towel

The first thing you should do is blot up as much of the moisture as you can with an absorbent towel or cloth. Even paper towels or toilet paper can work if your regular towels aren’t doing the trick.

How To:Put the towel over the affected area and apply as much pressure as you can to force moisture out of the mattress and into the towel. Treat the entirety of the affected area this way and continue until you’ve removed as much moisture as you can.

As an added step, you can use a hairdryer to help the drying process further. Turn it onto the highest setting and hold it a few inches away from the mattress to heat up and help dry the affected area. Repeat until you’ve covered the entire affected area, but don’t stay in one spot for longer than 15 minutes or the heat could damage the fabric.

Absorb Remaining Moisture

Sadly, it’s impossible to get all the moisture out with just a towel and a hairdryer, so the next step is to absorb the remaining moisture using powder. The most efficient way is with clean kitty litter, but baking soda works as well so use whichever you have on hand. Generally, kitty litter works quicker, while baking soda might need a little longer to absorb the moisture.

How To:Lay the mattress down flat and sprinkle the powder/litter over the affected surface, covering it completely. Place a towel over it and press down to force the moisture into the power/litter. Let the powder sit for anywhere between 2-12 hours (shorter for litter, longer for baking soda) and try to repeat the pressing every 1-2 hours. If you like you can put flat items with a little weight to them, such as books or cutting boards, on top of the towel to keep up a constant pressure.

Use a Wet/Dry Vacuum

Once enough moisture has been absorbed you should use a wet/dry vacuum (also called a shop vac) to remove the powder/litter. Avoid using a regular household vacuum for this purpose. The reason for this being if a normal vacuum sucks up moisture it could get damaged, and whoever’s operating it might also get an electric shock.

How to:Remove the towel and any weights you may have put on it and use the vacuum as normal. Make sure you get all the powder/litter off the mattress. If any moisture remains the process can be repeated again, as many times as needed.

Prevent Mold Forming

One important thing to know about how to dry a mattress is how to inhibit the growth of mold.

How To:By combining one part rubbing alcohol and one-part water you can create a simple cleaning solution that prevents mold and mildew. A clean cloth can be dipped into the moisture, wrung out, and then rubbed over the surface of the mattress. Make sure to wring the cloth out completely and be careful not to overly saturate the fabric with the solution, as this will make the moisture problem worse. You should treat the entire surface of the mattress with this solution for best results.

Let it Air Dry

The final step is to let any remaining moisture air dry. If it’s sunny outside and likely to stay that way, taking the mattress outside is a great way to do this.

How To:Prop the mattress up against a wall in direct sunlight, or if you have access to things like sawhorses you can create a platform with them for it to rest on. Make sure to leave at least 2 feet of air space on each side to ensure proper air circulation and quicker drying. If you have long extension cords you can also move fans outside to help with the drying further.

If you can’t take the mattress outside, air-drying inside works as well, but be sure to open the windows in the room you’re using. Use fans placed on either side to help circulate the air and try to keep the room warm through the use of space heaters or radiators so the moisture evaporates.

If it’s winter and you struggle to keep the room warm with the windows open, try opening and closing them in intervals to allow for both evaporation of moisture and ventilation of the room.

Why you need to clean a mattress

No matter how often you change your bed linen, you still need to go the extra mile every so often and give your mattress a thorough clean.

While you may think that your mattress isn’t dirty, especially if you normally shower before going to bed and if the mattress is stain-free, that’s unlikely to be the case. According to The Sleep Council, the average adult loses 285ml of fluid each night. We also shed around 454g of dead skin over the course of a year, much of which ends up nestled in your bed.

That’s not all. The average bed contains 10,000 dust mites, produce more than two million droppings, which can aggravate allergies. It’s no wonder The Sleep Council say that a dirty mattress can contain worrying levels of staphylococcus, enterococcus, norovirus and even MRSA.

How often should you clean a mattress?

There’s no hard and fast rule for how often a mattress needs to be cleaned. It all depends on the mattress and the person sleeping on it.

If you suffer from allergies, you should clean your mattress whenever the tell-tale symptoms of a runny nose, an itchy throat and dry eyes start to worsen.

It also depends on how breathable the mattress is. Every mattress we review is tested for how well moisture passes through it, and the more breathable a mattress is, the less likely it is to stockpile sweat. Head to our mattress reviews to buy a breathable mattress.

While there’s no right or wrong answer to the question of how often a mattress needs cleaning, every six months is advisable. If you’re in the habit of flipping or rotating your mattress every three to six months (as you should be), its worth taking a little extra time to clean your mattress while you do it.

How to clean a mattress

If your mattress is stain-free, cleaning it should be a quick process. Simply follow the six steps below:

  1. Strip the bed and wash your bed linen. Follow the instructions on the labels and remember that stains on your sheets are more likely to be removed with a Best Buy washing machine.
  2. Check for new stains on the mattress. If you find any, scroll down for tips on how to tackle them.
  3. Gently vacuum the surface of the mattress. For this, you should use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner, making sure the attachment is clean before you begin. Once you’ve given the mattress the once over, go back and focus on any nooks and crannies in the surface to make sure you pick up every last bit of dust and dead skin. It’s a good idea to vacuum under the bed to remove dust at the same time, especially if you suffer from allergies.
  4. Rotate your mattress from head to toe if it’s one-sided, or flip it if it’s two-sided. If it’s the latter, make sure you vacuum both sides of the mattress.
  5. Air your mattress for a few hours to let the fabric breathe. Unless you need to get rid of an unpleasant smell (see below), opening the bedroom window to let fresh air circulate around the room and pass through the fabric in your mattress should be sufficient.
  6. Remake the bed. We recommend using a mattress protector beneath your sheet to protect your mattress from dust and sweat, as this means you won’t have to clean the mattress so often.

How to remove mattress stains

Scrubbing stains out of a mattress is no one’s idea of fun, but it’s essential if you want to keep your mattresses clean and odour free for years to come. Before you get going, there are three golden rules to follow:

  1. Try to attack stains as soon as possible after they occur.
  2. Check the mattress label before you apply any cleaning products.
  3. Test any cleaning solution on a small part of the stain first to ensure it won’t damage the mattress.

Read on for advice on how to target specific stains, or scroll down to find out how to get rid of unpleasant mattress smells.

How to get blood stains out of a mattress

To get blood stains out of your mattress, first dab at the stain with a little cold water. Be careful not to soak the mattress and don’t rub the stain as this could spread the blood further.

You may find this technique to be surprisingly effective, especially if the stain is recent, but if not, try adding a little baking soda to the water. Apply to the stain, leave it for 30 minutes, and then dab with clean water and leave to dry.

If the stain is still there after the mattress has dried, try following the steps below for removing urine.

How to get urine out of a mattress

To remove bodily fluids such as urine from your mattress, try diluting washing-up liquid in water and then gently dabbing at the stain with a cloth or sponge. Remember that mattresses aren’t waterproof, so it’s best to clean slowly and steadily. If the stain still isn’t lifting, use an upholstery cleaner, but always read the label. We recommend erring on the side of caution, so it’s safest to dilute it and avoid spraying it directly onto the mattress.

Removing other mattress stains

For food and drink stains, such as tea and coffee, your best bet is to try the baking soda and cold water mix mentioned above. For bodily fluids and sweat stains, try using diluted washing-up liquid. If in any doubt, though, contact the manufacturer to find out if they have any specific advice.

How to stop your mattress from smelling

Regardless of how comfortable your mattress is, you’re unlikely to get a good night’s sleep if you’re unable to escape an unpleasant smell when you put your head down.

There are two reasons your mattress might smell. The first is because it’s new. It’s not uncommon for mattresses made with synthetic materials such as memory foam to have a strong chemical smell when you first unpack them. But even if your mattress isn’t synthetic, you may find that it smells a bit when new as a result of the flame-retardant chemicals that manufacturers are required to apply by law.

The smell should disperse gradually, but you can speed up the process by leaving it near an open window to air. Or, if the smell is especially strong, you can try air the mattress outside if you have a patio and the weather is good.

The second reason a mattress might smell is if something has soaked into the material. Bodily fluids are obvious examples, but drinks such as tea and coffee can easily be spilt if you’re enjoying breakfast in bed. Even spilt water can give the mattress a musty smell if the fabric hasn’t been properly dried out.

After you have removed any stains (see above), air the mattress for as long as possible to allow the smell to fade. If the smell is especially strong or unpleasant, though, you will need to resort to stronger measures. Sprinkle baking soda over the entire mattress surface and leave it for as long as possible – ideally overnight. Next, vacuum up the baking soda and leave the mattress to air by an open window – you should find that the smell has gone.

Cleaning memory foam mattresses

Memory foam mattresses often come with a removable mattress cover that’s machine washable. This can make cleaning a lot easier, but there are a couple of things to be aware of.

Always check the manufacturer’s instructions and the details of your mattress warranty before cleaning. Some mattresses have removable covers but the manufacturer actually advises against taking the cover off and washing it, while others allow this but say to avoid cleaning the foam after the cover has been removed.

If you are putting your cover in the washing machine, follow the washing instructions carefully to be sure you don’t inadvertently invalidate your warranty or shrink the cover so much that it then doesn’t fit back over the mattress.

Is it time you bought a new bed?

There are a few things you can do to maximise the lifespan of your mattress. Cleaning it regularly is certainly one of them, but flipping or rotating your mattress according to the manufacturer’s instructions, using a mattress protector and not sitting on the edge of your bed will help, too. A good mattress topper can also give an ailing mattress a new lease of life.

Even so, mattresses don’t last for ever. When you’re sleeping on it every night, it’s all too easy to convince yourself that your mattress is as good as it was when new. But just because a mattress is comfortable doesn’t guarantee that it’s providing good support for your back.

We’ve tested mattresses that will remain supportive without sagging or softening for up to 10 years. But if you’ve had you mattress longer than that, you may want to consider buying a new one.

1. Washing the cover:

Unzip the cover and remove it from the mattress to wash by hand or in a washing machine. If you use a washing machine, make sure to zipper the cover closed to avoid snagging the fabric. Be sure and use a mild detergent and COLD or COOL water. Using hot water may cause the cover to shrink which would make it not fit properly.

Dry on cool settings or hang to air dry.

After washing, the cover should go back on the core easily. If the fit has become tight due to shrinkage, please contact us immediately for a replacement.

2. Once the cover is removed, the Wovenaire core can also be washed. Here’s how:

Place the Wovenaire in the shower or tub.
Spot clean the soiled area (or the whole mattress!) with cold or cool water.
Just make sure to use a mild detergent and to avoid hot water.

3. To dry the Newton Crib Mattress:

Shake rigorously to release any trapped water droplets inside the core.
Lay it on its side to dry. This will take approximately 2-6 hours, depending on how much air circulation is in the room. If you want to speed up the process, place the core in a well-ventilated area and/or in front of a fan.
Never place in a clothes dryer or use a hand dryer on it.

What to avoid:
DO NOT USE HOT WATER – when washing, use only cold or cool temperature water. Washing with hot water will cause the cover to shrink, and not fit properly on your Newton Crib Mattress.

DO NOT USE HEAT TO DRY – Please be sure when speeding up the drying process, to only use cool air solutions. PLEASE DO NOT USE A DRYER TO DRY THE COVER OR THE NEWTON CRIB MATTRESS. DO NOT USE A BLOW DRYER OR HEATING ELEMENT TO DRY AS HEAT MAY CAUSE THE COVER TO SHRINK AND CAN DAMAGE THE NEWTON CRIB MATTRESS.

The cover has a full zip around the mattress, which allows for ease of changing and washing as needed!

You can wash your crib mattress as often as needed. Spot clean, or give it a full rinse whenever you like! The cover can be laundered as much as you desire, or as often as you would launder your fitted sheet. Make sure you check our care and use instructions for best practices on how to care for your mattress.

Simply visit the warranty page and register your product, including your due date for your 100 night trial to begin. If your little one is already here, filling out the product registration will ensure your 100 night trial to start on the date you receive your mattress.

You can find Newton Baby products in buybuyBaby stores across the country. We also have certain specialty retailers that carry the crib mattress as well. Please contact our customer service to find the closest retailer near you!

We have made Newton the recommended firmness needed to support your baby for musculoskeletal development, and have made it comfortable as well! This ensures that your Newton will grow with your baby from infancy through toddler ages! You do not need to flip the mattress for use with a toddler, as the sides are interchangable.

Our 2-stage Original and Waterproof mattresses are designed to grow with your baby and have a unique longevity. It is firm enough for your littlest but cushy enough for your growing toddler. Plus, with its ability to be washed down to the core for a sleep that’s fresh like new, Newton is a hand-me-down you can feel good about. Our Basic Mattress is a thinner profile and is great for infant use to gain maximum breathability and washability, but with one layer of spacer material, the Basic doesn’t offer the same cushiony feel that growing toddlers love.

While it’s not required, feel free! You may find it easier to combat messes by flipping your mattress when needed, and as it’s the same firmness all the way through, go ahead. Flip away!

We do not have mattresses for co-sleepers.

At this time, we are unable to make custom sizes.
