Purple Mattress Overview

Purple is a mattress and bedding product brand that first launched in 2015. The company currently offers three individual mattress models. This review will focus on the flagshipPurple Mattress, also known as the Original Purple.

The Purple Mattress was the first model constructed with the Purple Grid comfort layer, which consists of hyperelastic polymers molded into a grid pattern. This proprietary material conforms to the body like memory foam, but it feels more responsive and absorbs less body heat.

Other components of the mattress include transitional and support layers of high-density polyfoam, and a cover made from a polyester-viscose blend. The Purple measures 9.5 inches thick and is considered medium-firm, or a 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

Keep reading to learn all about the Purple Mattress, including materials and construction specs, prices, and performance ratings based on owner experiences and our own in-house testing. This review also looks at comparisons between the Purple Mattress and other leading bed-in-a-box models, along with Purple’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

Recommended for.

  • Sleepers who prefer mattresses with a floating feel. The Purple Grid comfort layer found in Purple Mattresses has a resilient, medium-firm feel, making it ideal for people who like sleeping “on” – as opposed to sleeping “in” – their mattress.
  • Lightweight and average weight individuals. The Purple Mattress provides very good support to sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less, especially side- and back-sleepers.
  • Hot sleepers. The Purple Grid promotes steady airflow to keep the surface temperature-neutral. This allows the mattress to sleep very cool compared to other models with foam base layers.
  • Couples. The Purple Mattress isolates most motion transfer and does not produce any noise, making it a good choice for people who are easily disturbed by their sleep partner’s movements.
  • Value-seekers.The mattress has a very reasonable price-point considering its innovative material construction and solid overall performance.

Not Recommended for.

  • Sleepers who prefer a traditional memory foam feel. The Purple Grid conforms to the sleeper’s body, but the material does not provide the same pressure-relieving cradle as memory foam. Those who prefer sleeping “in” – not “on” – their bed may find the mattress too firm.
  • Heavier individuals. The mattress may not provide adequate support for sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds, resulting in uncomfortable sagging and added pressure.

How Is the Purple Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Purple Mattress has a top cover made from a knit blend of 67 percent polyester, 29 percent viscose, and 4 percent Lycra spandex. This material has a very soft and stretchy feel. The cover also features a slip-guard bottom is made of 100 percent polyester. Purple recommends spot-cleaning the cover with mild detergent if spills occur.

Comfort Layer

The Purple Mattress is constructed with the 2-inch Purple Grid comfort layer, a material unique to Purple models. The hyperelastic polymer layer buckles where the sleeper’s body exerts pressure, but the rest of the surface will not compress.

This creates a floating feeling akin to sleeping “on” the mattress, as opposed to beds that form a pressure-relieving cradle around the sleeper’s body. That said, the Purple Mattress conforms to a noticeable extent.

Due to the comfort layer’s open grid design, the Purple Mattress promotes steady airflow to keep the surface very cool. This gives the mattress better temperature neutrality than most competing models made with polyfoam or memory foam comfort layers.

And although the Purple Grid is fairly responsive, the material isolates motion transfer very well. Check out our ‘Temperature Neutrality’ and ‘Motion Isolation’ ratings below for more details.

Transitional Layer

The Purple mattress has a 3.5-inch transitional layer of 1.8 PCF high-density polyfoam. This component acts as a buffer between the Purple Grid and the denser support core, and prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress. The bed’s medium-firm feel can be partially attributed to its transitional polyfoam, which is thicker and denser than the transitional layers found in most competing all-foam beds.

Support Layers

Beneath the transitional layer, the Purple Mattress contains 4 inches of 2.0 PCF high-density polyfoam. This denser material stabilizes the entire bed to maintain an even surface for sleepers. Although the layer is fairly short compared to the polyfoam support cores found in other models, the transitional layer is thick enough to help reinforce the mattress.

Mattress Height

Altogether, the Purple Mattress measures 9.5 inches thick. This profile is slightly shorter-than-average. The high-density polyfoam transitional and support layers constitute 7.5 inches of the bed’s height, and the mattress sacrifices a thick comfort system for more overall support and a firmer feel.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Purple Grid’s unique construction gives the mattress a distinct feel compared to other models sold today. The grid conforms to the body where pressure is exerted, and this results in targeted contouring to the shoulders and hips while the rest of the sleeper’s body experiences a floating sensation.

The Purple Mattress offers a medium-firm feel. Sleepers won’t experience the deep pressure-relieving cradle of memory foam, but the Purple Grid conforms to a noticeable extent. Side-sleepers receive adequate cushioning for their bodies to keep their spine aligned, while back-sleepers don’t sink too much thanks to the sturdy transitional layer.

Check out our Sleeper Ratings below to learn how the Purple Mattress performed with sleepers in different weight and position groups.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at each performance rating we’ve given the Purple Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, along reviews from verified mattress owners.

Durability

The Purple Mattress has been available to the public for a few years, but we have not had sufficient time to test this model across the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Our durability rating for the mattress is based on its materials and quality of construction, owner experiences, and Purple’s overall reputation.

We estimate the Purple Mattress will perform for about seven years before a replacement is needed. This projected lifespan is on par with the average all-foam bed. The Purple Grid is a highly durable material compared to memory foam or polyfoam. However, deterioration in the transitional and support layers may lead to body impressions in the sleep surface and excessive sagging, both of which affect how supportive the mattress feels for sleepers.

Owners can help protect their Purple Mattress from sagging and impressions by rotating the bed head-to-foot every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

To evaluate the Purple Mattress for motion isolation, we asked two testers to lie down on the bed at the same time. One tester moved around while the other felt for movement transferring across the surface. The mattress exhibited very good motion isolation during this test. The surface absorbed most of the movement, and the testers felt very little transfer. These findings were consistent with ratings from our external testers who share their bed with a sleep partner.

The Purple Mattress is on par with all-foam beds in this category. The mattress does not completely eliminate transfer, but the Purple Grid is designed to absorb the sleeper’s body where pressure is exerted while maintaining a flat, uniform surface across the rest of the bed. This allows the mattress to isolate motion very well while also being fairly responsive.

Off-Gassing

Our testers noticed some initial odor when unboxing the Purple Mattress. When they returned to re-evaluate the mattress a few days later, they found the off-gassing smells had completely dissipated. This is due in part to the comfort layer’s open-grid design, which does not trap unpleasant smells like solid foam. Owner experiences with the Purple Mattress also indicate low odor potential.

All mattresses produce some off-gassing odor when new, but models with foam components tend to be smellier than other mattress types. Most mattresses do not produce excessive odor beyond the initial unboxing stages, but some carry a noticeable and persistent smell. The Purple Mattress is a good option for people who find even faint off-gassing odor offensive.

Pressure Relief

Our testers evaluated the Purple Mattress for pressure relief by lying on a sensory pad that monitors reduced blood circulation in the shoulders, hips, and other pressure-sensitive areas. They also changed positions to see if pressure increased or decreased on their side, back, and stomach.

Overall, our testers weighing 230 pounds or less reported adequate pressure relief. Heavier sleepers, on the other hand, experienced more added pressure.

The bed’s pressure-relieving abilities also vary by sleep position. The Purple Grid material offers good cushioning for the shoulders and hips, which can improve spinal alignment for side-sleepers, while the robust polyfoam layers provide even support and weight distribution for back-sleepers.

Stomach-sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more found the mattress too prone to sagging. For those who sleep on their stomach, too much sagging causes the body to sink too deeply and often causes neck and shoulder pain.

Temperature Neutrality

The Purple Grid has an open construction that allows more air to flow through the layer. As a result, the Purple Mattress absorbs minimal body heat and sleeps exceptionally cool – especially compared to beds with memory foam or polyfoam comfort layers, which tend to trap a fair amount of heat. We recommend the Purple Mattress to anyone who finds all-foam beds too hot.

Edge Support

Our testers evaluated the Purple Mattress for edge support by sitting along the bed’s perimeter as an owner might do when getting in and out of bed. Testers in all weight groups noticed significant sinkage while sitting, particularly those who weigh more than 230 pounds. As the transitional and support foam deteriorates, the mattress may begin to permanently sag in areas where owners normally sit.

Our testers also took turns lying along the edge of the mattress to check for feelings of “roll-off.” Testers weighing 230 pounds or less found the edges relatively stable, but heavier individuals felt less secure. Overall, we consider the bed’s edge support to be fair at best.

The Purple Mattress is comparable to all-foam mattresses in terms of edge support. Other mattress types, such as innerspring and hybrid models, have dense coil systems that reinforce the perimeter against excessive sinkage and provide more stability for sleepers across different weight groups.

Noise

During our tests, the Purple Mattress did not produce any noise when bearing weight. The Purple Grid material is virtually silent, as are the transitional and support layers, making the Purple Mattress comparable to other all-foam or all-latex beds in terms of noise potential. Other mattress types tend to be louder due to different internal components, such as coils found in innerspring or hybrid models.

The Purple Grid is fairly responsive with a noticeable bounce, making it a good option for couples who prefer a springier surface for sex. However, the comfort layer’s buckling material may sink excessively for some couples, especially if they are on the heavier side.

Many couples find lower-profile mattresses uncomfortable for sex because they bottom out easily. This does not appear to be an issue with the Purple Mattress. Although the bed has a 9.5-inch profile, its heavy frame and dense transitional and support materials provide decent stability.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness settings for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, the Tuck team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Our lightweight testers found the Purple very comfortable across different sleep positions. The Purple Grid conforms closely enough to cushion the body and alleviate pressure for side-sleepers, while the transitional and support foams help distribute weight and maintain an even plane for back- and stomach-sleepers.

Sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds often prefer soft to medium-soft mattresses because they conform more closely to their bodies. Firmer beds do not conform enough, resulting in less pressure relief – and in some cases, added discomfort. The Purple Mattress is an exception due to its unique comfort layer composition, which offers adequate contouring for lighter people while maintaining a firmer feel.

Side-sleepers who prefer to sink deeply into their mattress may not find the Purple Mattress comfortable. However, we recommend the mattress to any lightweight individual who likes sleeping “on” – not “in” – their bed.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Overall, our average weight testers found the Purple reasonably comfortable, but their experience largely depended on sleep position. The most positive ratings came from back-sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds, who felt the mattress provided an optimal balance of body-conforming and support. Side-sleepers also enjoyed the mattress but noted some pressure build-up.

Average weight stomach-sleepers experienced some sagging – a common issue associated with this position. Many people carry a large portion of their weight in their midsection, and sleeping on the stomach can pull the body deeper into the mattress.

Models with robust coil systems often withstand sagging and maintain an even surface. However, the Purple Mattress and other beds with foam transitional and support layers are more likely to sag excessively.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

The Purple Mattress also received mixed ratings from our testers weighing more than 230 pounds. Back-sleepers found the mattress adequately supportive and did not experience too much sagging, though they felt some added pressure at times. Side-sleepers also reported more pressure, with uneven support around the hips.

Heavier stomach-sleepers experienced significant sagging, and this has a major effect on how comfortable the mattress felt. The potential for stomach-sleeper aches and pains, particularly around the neck and shoulders, is fairly high for the Purple Mattress.

How Does the Purple Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

We urge all mattress shoppers to compare different brands and models before deciding which bed is best for them. In this next section, we’ll see how the Purple Mattress stacks up against other Purple models and some leading mattresses from competing brands.

Purple Mattress vs. Purple Hybrid

Like the Purple Mattress, the Purple Hybrid is built with a 2-inch Purple Grid comfort layer and offers a medium-firm (6.5) feel. The key distinction between these two beds is support core construction, as the Purple Hybrid features pocketed coils reinforced with transitional and base layers of high-density foam. The hybrid has an 11-inch profile and provides more overall support than the Purple Mattress.

Due to strong airflow through the coil layer and good surface cooling from the Purple Grid, the Purple Hybrid offers excellent temperature neutrality. The Purple Mattress sleeps reasonably cool, but the hybrid is a better option for hot sleepers. The Purple Hybrid’s thick coil system also offers better support for heavier sleepers, as well as more reinforcement along the edges.

The Purple Mattress has a lower price-point than the Purple Hybrid, though the latter is still very inexpensive compared to other hybrid models. If cost is a major factor, shoppers may opt for the Purple Mattress, but we recommend the Purple Hybrid to anyone seeking exceptional cooling and support from their bed.

Purple Mattress vs. Purple Hybrid Premier

The Purple Hybrid Premier is a variation on the Purple Hybrid. Shoppers can choose from a 3-inch Purple Grid with a medium (5.5) feel or a 4-inch grid with a medium-soft (4.5) feel. Like the Purple Hybrid, the Hybrid Premier has a 7.5-inch pocketed coil support system for excellent temperature neutrality and very strong support.

The Hybrid Premier’s thicker comfort layers mostly eliminate motion transfer, giving this model a slight edge over the Purple Mattress and Purple Hybrid in terms of motion isolation. Thanks to a higher profile that doesn’t sacrifice coil thickness, the Hybrid Premier also offers even support and pressure relief for sleepers across all weights and position groups.

For many shoppers, choosing between the Purple Mattress and Purple Hybrid Premier will come down to pricing. The Hybrid Premier is fairly expensive with a 3-inch Purple Grid, and exceptionally expensive with a 4-inch grid. However, Purple offers free White Glove delivery – including in-home assembly and old mattress removal – for Hybrid Premier orders. This service is not available for free with the Purple Mattress.

Purple Mattress vs. The Casper

The Casper mixed-foam mattress offers a medium (5) feel and close body-conforming. A top polyfoam layer gives the mattress a light bounce, resulting in a combination of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the bed. This contrasts with the Purple Mattress, which creates the sensation of floating on top of the surface.

Although the Casper has better-than-average temperature neutrality for an all-foam bed, the mattress does trap some body heat and may sleep warm as a result. This makes the Purple Mattress a better choice for hot sleepers. However, the Casper’s less responsive surface absorbs and minimizes more motion transfer, and its robust support system provides better edge support.

Price-points are nearly identical between the Casper and Purple Mattress. Those who prefer a balance of sinking and sleeping on top of their mattress may want to choose the Casper, while the Purple Mattress is a better option for those who like sleeping “on” their bed.

Purple Mattress vs. Leesa Mattress

Like the Casper mentioned above, the Leesa Mattress is a mixed-foam model made with polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers. The mattress has a medium (5) feel and conforms closely, but does not provide the same body cradle as traditional memory foam. The surface has a light bounce, but the Purple Mattress is much more responsive.

The Leesa Mattress does not trap as much body heat as other all-foam beds, but the Purple Mattress promotes stronger airflow thanks to its open-grid comfort layer and sleeps cooler by comparison. Both beds isolate motion transfer very well and do not make any noise when bearing weight, so either model is suitable for anyone who awakens easily due to their sleep partner’s movements.

The Leesa has a lower price-point than the Purple Mattress, but both models are considered fairly inexpensive. Those who enjoy a combination of sleeping “in” and sleeping “on” their mattress may want to choose the Leesa Mattress, but the Purple Mattress is better suited to hot sleepers and those who prefer sleeping “on” their bed.

Purple Mattress vs. Nectar Mattress

The Nectar Mattress is made with two memory foam comfort layers, along with a memory foam transitional layer and a high-density polyfoam base. The mattress is medium-firm but the materials conform very closely to the sleeper’s body to form a deep body cradle. This contrasts with the Purple Mattress, which makes sleepers feel as though they are floating on the surface.

On the other hand, hot sleepers will probably feel more comfortable using the Purple Mattress. The Nectar Mattress has low- and medium-density comfort layers that trap a minimal amount of body heat, but the bed may still sleep warm for some. In other areas, such as motion isolation and pressure relief, the Purple and Nectar mattresses performed at roughly the same level.

The Nectar Mattress costs less than the Purple Mattress, but both beds offer good value for shoppers. The Nectar Mattress is a great option for people who enjoy the traditional feel of memory foam, while the Purple Mattress is better for those who like more push-back from their sleep surface.

Purple Mattress vs. T&N Mattress

The T&N Mattress from Tuft & Needle is an all-polyfoam model with a graphite-infused comfort layer and a high-density polyfoam base. Like the Purple Mattress, the T&N Mattress has a medium-firm (6.5) feel. The polyfoam also gives the T&N Mattress a light bounce, but the Purple Mattress is still a more responsive model.

Both mattresses isolate motion transfer very well and are silent when bearing weight, making either one a good option for couples. The T&N Mattress also sleeps fairly cool thanks to the graphite infusion in its comfort layer – but for those who tend to feel too hot on foam beds, the Purple Mattress will probably be more suitable.

The T&N Mattress has a lower price-point than the Purple Mattress, but both are inexpensive and considered high-value models. Sleepers who like the conforming of foam will likely prefer the T&N Mattress, while people who want to sleep exceptionally cool may want to pick the Purple mattress instead.

We’ve Been Sleeping on a Purple Mattress For Over a Year — Here’s What we Think

2016 could be dubbed the year of the online mattress. Even though they didn’t all launch this year, the bed in a box type mattresses such as Purple, Leesa, Casper, Tuft & Needle and Ghostbed are growing in popularity.

The Launch of Purple Mattress: Fall 2015

The mattress in a box niche started to take off around 2013. That’s also when Purple mattress invented a machine that could create and mold large pieces of Hyper-Elastic Polymer (the purple stretchy stuff in the top 2.5" of a Purple bed) into a king-sized mattress. This was new and it made it possible to create a mattress, roll it into a holder and mail it. It also made the price drop and that led to huge growth in online mattress sales.

Here’s the stuff they call a hyper elastic polymer that takes up the first 1.5 inches of a Purple mattress. It’s stretchy and bouncy on its own. On top of a mattress this is like a shock absorber. Great for not waking up the person sleeping next to you if you’re getting out of bed or tossing/turning. It also means you’re not sleeping on a solid state (helping airflow, cushioning your pressure points, etc). This mattress isn’t soft, but it’s not firm either. It’s more middle firm.

Purple mattress was launched via a very successful Kickstarter campaign in September of 2015. A month later the company raised $171,560. I organized a blogger outreach campaign to spread the video and get mattress reviews. So I was one of the first people to get a Purple bed.

Perhaps one of the biggest contributors to Purple’s success was The Harmon Brothers team (it wasn’t all them). They created an incredible viral video featuring goldilocks and the raw egg test. Before we saw it, I had bloggers each create a video that they shared on Facebook with a raw egg test. That is, you sit on a Purple cushion and place an egg on it. Instead of breaking the egg gets absorbed into the mattress. This illustrates a point that just like your body, the polymer cradles your pressure points and stops you from tossing and turning to get comfortable. That means you sleep better. Purple’s videos got 18 million views on YouTube and 86 million views on Facebook.

My husband and I created an unboxing video when we got ours. It now has over 200,000 views on YouTube and a lot of comments! Here it is:

After almost a year, I wrote my Purple mattress review and we created a video review.

This mattress revolution means that you don’t have to go mattress shopping at a mattress store. You don’t have to wonder if you will like your mattress when you get home. They let you sleep on it for 100 days or more and ship it back free if you don’t love and want to keep it. Plus, there aren’t a zillion names and combinations of mattresses that are just about impossible to compare. Prices are very reasonable.

In the past you had to go to a mattress store and lie on a bed to see if it felt right. The problem is lying on a mattress in the store it not the same as sleeping on a mattress. Try returning a mattress you hate. It’s not going to happen. So all of these mattress companies could afford to offer a killer guarantee. Sleep on the mattress for 100 nights and if you don’t like it, return it for a full refund. They also offer free shipping.

These are the main reasons I love Purple mattress:

  • There is little movement transfer. The purple stuff is like a shock absorber. I can no longer feel when my husband moves around and that used to wake me up frequently.
  • I expect it to last for a LONG time. I had a baby bed made with the same material. It was essentially a Purple mattress cushion with a cover on it. No foam. After 3 years of my daughter sleeping on it, there was zero wear and tear. This stuff is practically indestructible. Plus, I’ve been to the factory and saw that it can be ground down and reused.
  • Non toxicity. This is a big deal. You breathe in whatever fumes your mattress releases and that’s bad news for most mattresses. However, when I visited the factory where Purple is made there was an amazing lack of odor. Same with when we opened our mattress.
  • No peaks and valleys. Our other mattress which was considerably more money (more than double the price) had developed troughs where we laid down after just 5 years. It made it so you could barely move — or what Purple calls “body imprints”.
  • Best mattress for back pain. There are a ton of factors that cause back pain and I’m not an expert on the topic. I have suffered aches and back pain when I’ve slept on a bad mattress. I’ve never had that problem with Purple.
  • Purple will come and pick up your mattress and donate to charity (through partnerships like one with Relief Bed) if you are not happy with your mattress. I would caution though not to act too soon. For many people, including me, you need to give it at least 2 weeks before making a decision. For me those first 10 days were brutal as I adjusted. Now I wouldn’t plan on anything else. I actually buy almost everything Purple sells, including their mattress protector and pillows.

Purple sleeps cool — and I sleep cold. Again, I think it’s from the airflow. I have an electric blanket, the kind that has dual controls. In the winter I like warm jersey type sheets like the ones that Purple sells. Or here are the things you need with a Purple bed. Like most big purchases that should last a decade or more, once you buy the bed you need more. You need a mattress protector, platform, sheets and everything else to get the most performance from it. The thing about these beds is they don’t usually have box springs. So you need a platform. They have one. Purple says using box springs voids the warranty. I think it’s ridiculous because I’m not ditching my bed frame or box springs for a platform. However, it may work for you if you’re limited on space or need something that can pack or store easily.

I have to admit when I first heard the term “Purple” as a mattress company, I thought it was comical in the same way I thought OrangeSoda was (an online marketing company I worked for). But it works. We’re really happy with our mattress and plan to replace our guest bedroom mattress with a Purple when it’s time to replace it. I want to warn you though. You may not want to sleep on other mattresses once you adjust!

Purple Mattress Vs Tempurpedic – Which Should You Get?

Tempur-Pedic (now Tempur-Sealy) is a company that has been around a long time and really created the memory foam mattress category. Purple is a new company making huge waves in the market with its gel technology mattress. As Purple has gained in popularity, people are wondering how these two mattress offerings compare to one another. I’ll go over the main similarities and differences here to try to help you make a more informed decision.

  • Click the button for a great deal on Purple
  • A great fit for hot sleepers
  • Features a firm, yet pressure-relieving gel grid
  • Click the button for the best deal on Tempur-Pedic
  • A great fit for those who want firmness options
  • Features the classic memory foam feel

Key Similarities:

  • Both provide great pressure relief
  • Both use quality, durable materials
  • Both do a good job at isolating motion (good for couples)

Key Differences:

  • Purple has just one mattress, while Tempur-Pedic has a full line, all with different firmnesses
  • The Purple is less expensive than every Tempur-Pedic model
  • The Purple has a bouncier / more resilient feel, while most Tempur-Pedic models have a slower-moving, memory foam feel

Main Construction Difference

Rather than going through each Tempur-Pedic model and going through the differences of each individual layer, I thought I’d just describe the main difference between the whole line of Tempurpedic mattresses and the Purple.

The key is the comfort layer. Every Tempur-Pedic mattress has a comfort layer with memory foam in it (either the TEMPUR-ES or TEMPUR-HD). While each model will have a different firmness level and slightly different feel, all the mattresses has the slower-moving memory foam feel.

The feel you get from the TEMPUR material is very different from the Purple’s comfort layer. The Purple has a hyper-elastic polymer gel layer. It remains firm until a certain threshold is met and then that part of the gel collapses. The result is a firm feel that is also very pressure relieving at the same time. The gel is instantly responsive, which is very different from the slow-moving feel of memory foam. You can see this feel in the video below.

Pick Purple If:

  • You Want A More Resilient Feel– The Purple moves immediately back into place when you move around. It has a very bouncy/resilient feel, much more so than any of the Tempurpedic models. If that’s the type of feel you think you’d like, then Purple would probably be the way to go.
  • You Want A Temperature Neutral Mattress– The gel construction makes the Purple mattress a completely temperature neutral mattress. That means you won’t sleep overly hot or overly cold because of the mattress. The Breeze models from Tempurpedic do a good job of making the mattress sleep cooler, but I think Purple takes the cake as far as keeping a neutral sleeping temperature.
  • You Want A Combination Of Firmness And Pressure Relief– I found Purple to be unique in that it felt both somewhat firm yet very pressure relieving at the same time. It was a cool feeling where I felt very well supported while feeling almost no pressure on my hips and shoulders.
  • You Want A Little More Value– Through the online-only business model, the value you get from the Purple is more than you get from any Tempurpedic model. This is simply because of the big price difference between Purple and any of the Tempur-Pedic models.

Pick Tempurpedic If:

  • You Want To Choose From A More Established Company– Tempurpedic has been around much longer than Purple. That means you get the benefit of years of customer reviews. You will have a better idea of how each of their mattresses will hold up over time because there is so much more data available.
  • You Want Firmness Options– Purple will be a good fit for a majority of sleepers, but if you know the exact firmness you want, you might be able to get a better fit with a Tempur-Pedic. They make each mattress model with a specific firmness in mind (Contour Supreme being the firmest and the Cloud Luxe being the softest), so you should be able to easily match your preference to one of the available models.
  • You Want A Slow-Moving, Memory Foam Feel– The feel of most Tempurpedic models is very different from the feel of the Purple. If you like to slowly sink into the mattress, then you will most likely prefer most of the Tempur-Pedic models over the Purple mattress.

Notes On Sleeping Hot

Some people worry that their mattress could sleep hot, and that is a common complaint about some Tempur-Pedic models. The Breeze models directly address this issue and do a good job of keeping a cooler sleeping temperature.

The Purple mattress is temperature neutral. You should have no concerns about the mattress sleeping hot. It’s simply not an issue because of the way the mattress is constructed.

Notes On Motion Isolation

Both Purple and the Tempur-Pedic models do a great job at isolating motion. If I had to pick a winner, I would say that theTempur-Pedic models do a slightly better job at isolating motion, but it’s pretty close. Both are a great option for couples because of this.

Notes On Price/Value

The obvious difference between Purple and the Tempur-Pedic line of mattresses is the price. Purple only sells online, so from that fact alone it is able to price its product much lower. If it sold through retail stores, it would probably be priced around $2,000-2,500.

Overall,I do believe the value of the Purple is higher, simply from the fact the business model allows them to price the mattress at such a low level. That is not to say that everyone should definitely buy the Purple, however.

Overall

The difference between the two companies and their products is vast. The feel of the Purple is very different from any of the Tempur-Pedic mattresses. Given the major feel difference and the price difference, you should be able to assess which mattress would be the best fit for you.

Purple Original – Unboxing & Shipping

Like most bed-in-a-box companies, the Original Purple mattressships for freeand arrives at your doorstep rolled up and compressed. However, it doesn’t actually arrive in a box. Not that it’s a big deal, but it actually arrives packaged in a protective covering.

Once you move the rolled up bed to your desired room, just remove the plastic covering, unroll the mattress and let it inflate for about 24-72 hours before using. The whole setup process is a lot easier than most people realize.

Once the mattress arrives,Purple gives you a 100-night risk-free trial period to test out the bed. If, for any reason, you decide you don’t like the bed during that time period, no problem, just give customer service a call. They’ll arrange for a third party to come pick up the mattress from your home, free of charge. Once you provide Purple with a receipt that the mattress had indeed been picked up,they’ll issue you a full refund. Pretty painless, right?

If you do decide to keep the mattress, it comes with a10-year warranty. You can read more about what the warranty entails on the Purple’s website.

Just to be clear, Purple is not the only online mattress company that offers such friendly policies. It’s the industry standard to offer free shipping, free returns, a 100-night trial period, and a 10-year warranty.

Purple Mattress Honest YouTube Review

Before we get into the meat and potatoes of this review, it’s important to note thatPurple offers three other mattress models as well. In short, the company recently introduced pocketed coil models, which are similar to the original, but use coils for their support and foundation layers.

These models are quite a bit more expensive than the Original Purple, but they do offer several advantages. Be sure to check out our reviews for more detail regarding the coil Purple mattresses.

What Does The Original Mattress Cost?

The Original Purple mattress ispriced about average for the bed-in-a-box industry. It wouldn’t be considered a budget tier mattress, nor would it be considered a luxury tier bed.

However, considering the special material this bed utilizes (we’ll get to that below),we actually think the original Purple is a pretty good value. Here’s how the prices break down by size:

SizePrice (MSRP)Twin$649Twin XL$749Full$949Queen$1,099King / Cal King$1,399

Unfortunately, Purple doesn’t regularly offer coupon codes or promo codes to make their mattresses cheaper. However, they will almost always throw in a free gift (pillow, sheets, etc.)with each mattress purchase. Be sure to check their website to see what promotion they’re currently offering.

Size And Dimensions (King, Queen, etc.)

As you’d expect, Purple is available in all of the major sizes in the US aside from the twin. They have the twin XL up to the California king. Here’s a breakdown of the exact dimensions for the original Purple mattress:

  • Twin XL — 38” x 80”
  • Full — 54” x 76”
  • Queen — 60” x 80”
  • King — 76” x 80”
  • Cal King — 72” x 84”

How Your Weight Affects The Purple Mattress

In almost every piece of content we write, we always make sure to talk about weight. Every mattress will feel different to various individuals. That’s becauseyour weight and body type play a huge role in how you perceive a mattress to feel.

In short, heavier sleepers (250+ pounds) will feel like most mattresses are on the softer side of the spectrum. Big folks exert quite a bit more stress and pressure on a bed than small and average size people. As such, they tend to sink into the bed a little more and have a more immersive experience with the top layers.

Your weight and body type matter when it comes to firmness

On the flip side, petite sleepers (150 pounds or less) place very little pressure on a mattress. As a result, these body types tend to think most mattresses are on the firmer side since they sleep more on top of the mattress and don’t sink in as much.

Obviously, that’s just feel though. Your weight will affect other factors as well like support and temperature regulation. Keep your weight in mind as you proceed through this review.

Design Of Purple Mattress: Topper & Cover

Like the majority of bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Original Purple mattress starts with a dense layer of support foam, which serves as the foundation for the bed. In this case, Purple uses a 4″ layer of two pound polyurethane foam.

In the middle, Purple uses a 3.25″ layer of 1.8 pound polyurethane foam. This layer is obviously a little less dense than the support foam below and acts as the transition layer in the mattress. However, here’s where Purple differs from pretty much all other online mattresses. For the top layer, Purple uses a 2″ layer of their patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer. Apparently, some people call this the “Purple Mattress Topper.”

A look at the different layers within the Purple mattress

This polymer material is not memory foam or any comfort layer that you’re used to seeing. Rather, itlooks and feels more like a gel or silicone-like material. The top layer is laid out in a grid formation, which creates a bunch of tiny squares across the surface of the bed.

The polymer material extremely soft, flexible, and responsive. In fact, Hyper-Elastic Polymer can be stretched 15x its original state. Try doing that with foam and see what happens (spoiler alert: it rips).

What really makes Hyper-Elastic Polymer special though is that it’salso quite supportive. You kind of get the best of both worlds with this material. It’s soft, comfortable, and pressure relieving, yet it’s also able to support all types of sleepers.

Purple likes to say it’s“soft where you want it and firm where you need it”. And honestly, we’d have to agree. It truly is a unique mattress material that’s supportive but also knocks it out of the park in terms of allowing for great pressure relief. It also offers additional benefits as well, which we will get to below.

Bringing all the layers together is a soft, removable cover. However, like most online mattresses, it is recommended you do not machine wash the cover. Rather, if you happen to spill something, you should spot clean it with a mild detergent.

Sleek, removable cover on the Purple mattress

If you’re worried about getting the cover dirty or you just want the convenience of being able to throw your sheets and cover in the wash together, you may want to check out some mattress protectors that Amazon has to offer.

Purple offers a mattress protector of their own that is machine washable, however, it’s slightly more expensive than the ones you can buy on Amazon. Keep in mind, though, that protectors can hinder the breathability of the mattress a little.

Firmness Test

As we alluded to above, the Original Purple mattress has a very unique feel. The top layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer gives the bed agel-like feel(even though it’s technically not gel). The bed is soft and comfortable, however, the feel can be too odd for some people.

As you lay down on the bed, you can sort of feel the polymer squares below shifting, folding and conforming to your body’s shape. It feels a little weird at first but after a few nights, we’ve found thatmost people warm up to the feel and end up really liking it.

A closer look at the Hyper-Elastic Polymer grid

If you’re still a little unsure of the gel-like feel though, you can always get a sample of Hyper-Elastic Polymer before pulling the trigger on a mattress.

In terms of firmness, honestly,it’s hard to rate the Original Purple given the unique characteristics of the polymer top layer. However, if you really pulled our collective arms, we’d say it’s about a medium on the firmness scale. Overall, the mattress finds a really nice balance between pressure relief and support.

Lastly, as we talked about above, Hyper-Elastic Polymer is super responsive. It pops back to its original state almost immediately after pressure is released. All this means is that active sleepers won’t feel like they’re “stuck in the mud” and will find itquite easy to switch between sleeping positions.

Will Back & Stomach Sleepers Like Purple?

Yes. Back and stomach sleepers will find thatthe Original Purple mattress provides the necessary support. Your hips will sink down a little into the polymer material (as they should) but not to the point where your spine is no longer in proper alignment.

Good option for back and stomach sleepers

If you’re a heavier back or stomach sleeper, the Original Purple will still work, it’s just probably not the best option out there. We’d recommend checking out the coil Purple mattresses, which contain coils. Or you can check out our Best Hybrid Mattresses list.

There’s not really a hard and fast rule for the weight limit for back and stomach sleepers. That said, we estimate that it’s around 230-250 lb. If you’re heavier, you can still lay on the bed, but we think you’ll be too heavy to be comfortable long term.

Enough Pressure Relief For Side Sleepers?

Yes. The Purple mattress is ideal for side sleepers of all sizes. The top layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer does a great job of conforming to your body and cradling your hips and shoulders. Overall, the bed provides a ton of pressure relief. It basically has the pressure relief of memory foam without creating that sink-in feeling that you may or may not like.

The special polymer grid cradles pressure points extremely well

In fact, Purple made our list for the Best Mattresses For Side Sleepers. We hold Purple in high regard as it relates to side sleepers. We consider Purple to be a nice alternative to a lot of softer memory foam beds since it offers enough pressure relief, but also is fairly supportive.

As you can probably guess, we also think the Purple is aviable option for combo sleepers. The bed provides ample pressure relief for side sleepers and a good amount of support under the lower back and trunk of back and stomach sleepers. Plus, given the top layer is so responsive, you’ll find it effortless to switch between positions.

Can Purple Handle Heavy & Obese People?

This is a hard one. While the top layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer is very supportive, we generally recommend heavy sleepers go with a bed that contains coils as their main support system.

In general, coils are much more durable than support foams and also provide bi-directional support, meaning the coils compress but also provide some resistance against pressure. As such, these types of beds are just better equipped to handle all the extra force big folks exert on a bed night after night.

As a result,we’d recommend big folks take a look at one of the coil Purple mattresses, which contain individually pocketed coils. You can see the coil Purple mattresses and check current pricing on Purple.com.

A quick look at the 4.0 model with coils

Conversely, people that weigh over 250 pounds might also want to take a peek at our list of the Best Mattresses For Heavy People.

Does Purple Mattresses Sleep Cold?

I don’t know if cold is the exact right word, but it’s definitelyone of the best beds out there when it comes to airflow and temperature regulation. This is largely due, again, to that top layer of Hyper-Elastic Polymer.

First, Hyper-Elastic Polymer is justa naturally more temperature neutral materialthan the common foams that most mattresses use for their top layers.

For example, traditional memory foam is known for retaining heat and transferring that to the person who is snuggled into the bed. You don’t get that with Hyper-Elastic Polymer, it just doesn’t retain or radiate heat.

Furthermore, as we mentioned above, the polymer material is constructed in a grid formation (Purple calls it a Smart Comfort Grid). Basically, this creates columns and rows of little polymer squares whereair can move freely.

The grid of Hyper-Elastic Polymer allows for a ton of airflow

Overall, this is one the big advantages that Purple beds offer. If you tend to heat up at night or just live in a hot climate and don’t like to use the air conditioner, this is one of the Best Mattresses For Hot Sleepers on the market.

Two More Things For Couples Looking At Purple

As we mentioned above, the feel of the Original Purple mattress can be very divisive. Some people love it and some people find it a little too weird. As such, this is the first hurdle that couples need to face. If one person in the relationship finds it too odd, you should probably take a look at our list for the Best Beds For Couples.

If both partners like the feel though, it’s time to talk about motion isolation and edge support, which are two important considerations for couples.

Let’s start with the good news. Surprisingly, the Original Purple mattress does apretty good job of limiting motion transfer. You might not think so given how responsive and sort of bouncy the polymer top layer is, but the bed actually passed our tests easily. Good motion isolation means one partner will not be disturbed by the other partner’s movements throughout the night. The less you’re disturbed and jostled awake means a more restful night’s sleep.

Moving on to edge support, this previously was one of the big complaints with the Purple mattress. However, in late 2019, the company addeddense foam side rails around the perimeter of the bedin order to help combat the issue. As a result, the bed now performs much better in this category compared to the previous version.

Improved edge support with the updated Purple mattress

All in all, we’d say the Purple mattress provides pretty decent edge support. We still wouldn’t put it in our great category, but it’s definitely good enough to get the job done.

Edge support is a particularly sensitive subject for partners who share a smaller size bed like a full or queen. A bed that provides viable edge support (like the Purple mattress) means there is more useful surface area for both individuals to spread out and get comfortable (rather than both people hugging the middle).

Final Verdict: Purple Mattress Reviews

We are big fans of Purple beds in general. We like all the benefits that Hyper-Elastic Polymer provides. There’s a reason why this mattress is staple on our list of the Best Beds Under $1,000.

Bottom line, if you’re open to a new style of mattress,we highly recommend giving Purple a try.
