How Do I Take My Mattress Out of the Box? When Can I Sleep On it?

To open your Avocado Green Mattress:

  1. Move the box to the room where you’ll ultimately want your new mattress.Because we use natural materials (which weigh more than polyurethane foams), you may be surprised by how heavy your new mattress is. When moving it, especially the larger sizes, the work is best done by two people.
  2. Open the brown shipping boxat the top within two weeks of receiving your mattress. Your mattress will be sealed inside within two layers of plastic.
  3. Slide the mattress out of the boxby laying the box on its side.
  4. Find the edge of thewhite layer of plasticand begin to unrollthe outer white layer of plastic only, and remove it from the mattress. The mattress will still be sealed within a second layer of plastic.Do not cut both layers of plastic at the same time, or the mattress will immediately begin to expand while rolled.
  5. Unroll the mattressand position it — either on the floor or on your bed frame — in a spot where it has ample room for it to expand to full size.
  6. Finally, carefully cut the remaining clear layer of plastic and remove it from the mattress. The mattress will fill to full size rather quickly (but not in any dangerous or alarming way). Call in friends and family members, as this is especially fun to watch. Within 30 minutes, you can lie on your new mattress. Within a few hours, your mattress will be fully expanded.

How Long to Let Your Memory Foam Mattress Expand?

The general rule is to give your new memory foam mattress 48 hours to expand and inflate to its proper size.

The real answer is not that simple. Every memory foam mattress has its unique requirements.

The following chart shows what each manufacturer recommends. Below that we go over where the 48 hours comes from and if you can immediately sleep on your new mattress.

Mattress Expansion Times For Each Manufacturer

amerisleepCan lay on it right away but could take 8 hours for the corners to expand fully and you should wait 2 hours before putting sheets on.
BEDBOSSShould decompress in 24 hours, but let it sit for 2 hours before moving it to the bedroom.
Bedinabox“It expands in about 3 minutes” is what I got when I emailed them. This seems too fast; I would still give it a few hours to be on the safe side.
CasperCan expand and be ready to sleep on in a few minutes but keep in mind that some will take longer.
Classic BrandsAllow 24 to 72 hours for the mattress to regain its full shape. If the mattress gets to its full height, it’s ready to use.
Dreamfoam Bedding6 to 7 hours from opening.
HelixGive it 2 hours to regain its shape, and you’re done.
LaylaWill take its full shape within minutes, and you can sleep on it right away. If you’re sensitive to smell give it a few hours to air out.
LeesaMay take up to an hour to expand but give it 24 hours to fully expand and be at its best
LinenspaUp to 48 hours but they do say you can jump on it as soon as you like. If anything they say your body heat can help speed up the expansion process.
LUCIDUp to 48 hours, but if it’s fully expanded after 24 hours you can go ahead and sleep on it.
LullWill do most of the expanding in 2 to 5 hours and fully expand in 24 to 48 hours.
MLILYShould be ready in 24 hours. Walking on it while it’s on the floor can help speed up the process.
NectarBetween 24 to 72 hours to expand.
Nest BeddingYou can sleep on it right when you open it, but it can take up to 24 to 48 hours for it to fully expand.
Olee Sleeplet it expand up to 72 hours
PuffyAllow it to expand and breathe for a few hours before putting bedding on it.
Purest Of AmericaAllow 24 to 72 hours to fully recover.
Signature SleepWait at least 48 hours.
Tuft & NeedleOnly takes several hours to reach the proper specifications, but in some cases, it may take up to 5 days.
TuloAllow it to sit for an hour before using it.
Zinus48 to 72 hours to fully decompress. Zinus recommends you sleep on the mattress during this time as it helps to full up the mattress. If after a week it hasn’t expanded, please contact them.

Don’t see your mattress? Go ahead and give it a couple of hours to expand, but let me explain why.

Can You Sleep on a New Memory Foam Mattress Straight Away?

The reason why you wait 24 hours, 48 hours or 72 hours is an old saying that people keep repeating.

As shown from the chart a significant number of manufacturers report shorter times and a good bit suggest sleeping on the mattress the first night. The reason is for your constant movements, and body heat loosens the foam. The more lose the foam, the better it expands.

Where The 48 Hour Memory Foam Expansion Time Came From

The first generation of memory foam mattresses is where this wait time wives tale came from. More time was needed for older memory foam mattresses to air out there odors.

The mattresses today don’t smell as bad; I would still recommend letting them air out for a few hours to absorb the smells of its surroundings. I know it sounds odd, but it’s well worth doing.

What if my mattress says to wait a few hours? – Well, it’s better to play it safe than sorry. The people that best understand your mattress are the ones who made it.

What If Your Memory Foam Mattress Is Not Inflating?

No need to worry if your memory foam mattress is not expanding; here is what you do.

Get the mattress flat as possible on the floor. Wearing clean socks walk on the mattress. The constant moving around combined with your body heat expands the mattress. I like to think of it as a mattress massage.

After massaging the mattress place it back on the bed frame and sleep for a few nights.

Keep in mind:New mattresses are like new shoes; they need to be broken in. Over the years you have gotten used to your old mattress, so the new one is going to feel different. We tend to forget this because we only buy mattresses every decade or so.

What To Do After Your Memory Foam Mattress Has Expanded?

I mean, you spent all this money you probably want it to last as long as possible?

If you want your mattress to last, you need a mattress protector.

Your mattress is a giant sponge, and it will soak up all the sweat, soda, dead skin and other nasty stuff you do in bed. Those liquids sit there not only making the mattress dirtier but destroying the function of the structure. It’s hard to work correctly when “waterlogged” with juices.

Plus, modern-day mattress protectors feel and look like regular bed sheets. I even have a review on the very one I use on my mattress. They’re not even that expensive either; I consider it crazy when people don’t use something so practical and affordable.

How Long Should You Leave a Memory Foam Mattress Before Sleeping on It?

It’s best to let your memory foam mattress expand for 48 hours. If you can’t give 48 hours then allow the mattress to expand for 6 hours before sleeping on it.

What Happens If You Sleep On Your Mattress Too Soon?

If you sleep on your mattress before it’s expanded it’s not the end of the world. In fact, many mattress manufacturers recommended you sleep on it the first night because your body heat helps to expand the foam.

I would not worry about it too much. The goal is to give the mattress a few hours before you sleep on it. It can take some mattress a whole week to reach its correct size and sleeping on it won’t hurt.

It’s Been A Week And The Mattress Has Not Expanded.

If it’s been a week and the mattress has not expanded correctly then, unfortunately, you have a defective mattress.

The good news is that this is usually rare. If it’s been a week no need to keep fighting it, contact the company you bought it from to check out the return policy. If you’re curious about returns and what they do with the old mattress check this out.

If you have to return the mattress and want a new one I’ve had good luck with Zinus Green Tea Mattress.

Quality of Materials

Linenspa uses a variety of foams and coil support systems in their mattresses and use affordable materials that are of lower quality than many competitors. Some customers have found these mattresses to have more problems with durability and sagging over a shorter period.

Mattress Types

Linenspa has four types of mattresses:memory foam, innerspring, memory foam hybrid, and latex hybrid. We’ll go through each of them in detail and discuss the mattresses contained therein:

Linenspa has one memory foam mattress, a5” gel memory foam mattress. This mattress is low profile, making it work best for bunk beds or temporary solutions. It has afirm feelwith two layers of foam–1” of gel memory foam and 4” of high-density support foam. This mattress is ideal for stomach sleepers, but could causepressure point pain for side or back sleeping. These mattresses get mixed reviews from customers — with some complaining about initial feel and durability.

The pros: Very affordable memory foam mattress.

The cons: Problems with firmness and durability reported.

Price Range: $134-$269

Linenspa offers one innerspring mattress, a6” innerspring mattress. It has a traditional innerspring construction with an interconnected array of innersprings. Its comfort layer is only the quilted cover, which leaves itfeeling firm and causing pressure points for some sleeping positions. This is best for a temporary solution, but may aggravate pressure points for many sleepers.

The pros: Very affordable innerspring mattress with a low profile.

The cons: Problems with durability and initial feel for some sleepers.

Price Range: $114-$214

Linenspa has three memory foam hybrid mattresses to choose from:8” memory foam hybrid, 10” memory foam hybrid, and 12” gel memory foam hybrid. These mattresses range frommedium-firm on the slimmer end to soft on the thicker end, making them best for sleepers in multiple positions. The big difference between them is that the comfort foam layer is thicker and the 12” version gets gel-infusion. Most customers find initial comfort with these mattresses, butreport quickly degrading comfort and sagging.

The pros: Thick mattresses for the price. Coil support and foam contour.

The cons: Many issues with durability reported.

Price Range: $139-$674

Linenspa makes one latex hybrid mattress, which is a10” latex hybrid mattress. This has 2” of quick response response foam blended with latex, and 7” of pocketed coils beneath. At a medium-firm profile, it is ideal for both back sleepers and stomach sleepers. However, there are some customers that found their mattresses todegrade and sag quicker than expected.

The pros: Very affordable mattress that features latex.

The cons: Some issues with durability reported by customers.

Price Range: $269-$539

Linenspa mattresses come in a range of firmness options, from firm to soft. Those that are stomach sleepers will prefer firmer mattresses, while side and back sleepers will do best with medium and softer mattresses.

Back Pain Relief

Although these mattresses have initial feels that align with back pain relief, they have sagging and durability issues, which can aggravate back pain for some.

Warm sleepers may experience some heat retention with these mattresses — especially the memory foam options that do not feature gel infused foams.

This Mattress is amazing!! If you’re nervous about ordering a mattress sight un seen from online.. Please put those fears to bed ( sorry for the pun). Not only did my shipment come in 2 days.. the price point not break the bank.. THIS MATTRESS PERFECT. no smell, soooo comfortable and will be buying more for the other beds in the house. THANK YOU for making my wife think i am a smart and savvy consumer.

The mattress feels good for support (that’s the reason for a 2), but it retains body heat to such an extent that it is extremely uncomfortable and I am unable to sleep on it for more than 2 hours. As the body cools down a lot of heat is given off and it becomes trapped in the foam. There is no place for the heat to dissipate through the 10 inches of insulating foam. Even with multiple layers of blankets between the top of the mattress and the bottom sheet, it’s like trying to sleep on a warming tray. It’s necessary to get out of bed for a while to cool down before trying to sleep again. Body exposed to room air is cold while body against the sheet roasts. We could not find an acceptable solution to get rid of the trapped air.

It’s a nice mattress. I ordered a queen & I measured it and it came out 3 inches short on length and width. If this isn’t a problem to you then it’s a great buy.

When I first got this mattress I was in love, it is so comfortable it is still comfortable, but after 8 months I have this curved lump on one side of the mattress, I have enclosed screen shots. I was hoping after only 8 months it would have lasted longer. You can feel the lump : (

Bought this mattress for my daughter. It was great for the first few months but now you can really feel the sprigs when you lay on it. I’m looking to purchase something else now. I’ll probabl give this mattress to a homeless man in our local area.

I was very surprised about how compact it was upon arrival. The price you paid is worth more than for the product. The mattress is really soft and comfortable. It doesn’t bounce like any other spring beds.King bed is scuh a big it can easily accommodate parents with child.

Comfortable, plush, surprised the cost was so reasonable. I’d buy it all over again!

We bought the twin size for my daughters daybed. It is sooo comfortable, and light weight. Not only does she sleep through the night, changing the sheets are abreeze!!

This is probably this best mattress I’ve ever had. And for this price? Really can’t beat it in my opinion.

This is ok for the price. It is a little firm. If you have a big toosh, it is not the most comfortable to lay on your back since it is so firm. I think I will need to get a mattress top to add extra support to my lower back. It isn’t too bad on my sides, but then the same problem with my hips being big. If you need something a little softer, I would send the extra 50-80 dollars on something that might be thicker.

Great value for the money ! I weigh about 130lbs and it feels nice & comfortable. I have been sleeping on it for 2 weeks now and it’s just the right balance between soft & firm. Also, it is convenient to carry as it comes rolled up in a box. When cutting the plastic outer wrap it was fun to watch the springs expand as the mattress actually rolled itself out ! Thank You Linenspa.

Bought this mattress (full size) for my 8 yr old daughter for her new bed. Absolutely love it, so comfy. Would definitely buy a king sized one when I’m looking at getting a new mattress for my husband and myself!

I love this mattress! It’s the perfect combination of firm with a comfortable top. I have gotten one for my 6′ 16 year old son. I ordered a pretty simple frame and twin mattress for less than $200! I am now looking into a full size for m 21 year old son.

I bought this for on a twin bed for my 5 year old niece. Very soft and comfortable. My niece loves it. Great value for the price and even better, I bought it on sale.

This mattress is amazing!! I wanted the most comfort at an economic al price. I did hours and days of research and chose this one in a King. It literally feels like I’m sleeping on a cloud! I have never had a better nights sleep. This is the best mattress I have ever owned.

This is the most uncomfortable bed ive ever slept on! I wake up with a back ache every morning and my shoulders and hips just dig into the bed. My husband moves around the whole bed every night trying to find a comfortable place. My 8 year old bed is more comfortable than this bed! Now i have to go buy a mattress topper so i can sleep and not toss and turn all night!

I can’t say enough good things about this mattress. I bought both my kids one and they have never slept better. I have slept on them and they are incredibly comfortable. I absolutely love it!!

I purchased this mattress for my almost 3 year old’s bed. This mattress is a very good quality. It seems very durable and comfortable. My son loves his new big boy bed. I bought the twin sized one. I was afraid that twin sized sheets wouldn’t fit on it since it is hybrid, but they did. I kept my receipt for the sheets just in case, but thankfully they fit perfectly. The only additional thing that I would recommend is not cutting the 3 tape wraps until you have the mattress on the bed. I intended to put the mattress on the bed before I cut the final two tape wraps. However, once I cut the first tape wrap off, the other 2 tape wraps broke. The mattress basically had an exploding open effect.

Just what I needed! Perfect! Light weight too making them easy to move around. No boxspring needed is an added plus!

It took several attempts to buy this mattress from the website. Everytime I bought it, the next morning I would see that the order was cancelled. Finally it got ordered, then when we went to the store to pickup, they had a hard time to find it. It’s now home, in place and my daughter loves it.

I recently bought a canopy twin size bed for my daughter and needed to buy a mattress for it. I was kind of hesitant about purchasing this bed because it was $77. I read the reviews and decided to give it a try. This mattress exceeded my expectations. It was shipped to store. It came rolled up in a box and it was quite heavy but that is to be expected. Opened the pacakge and let the mattress rest on the floor to let it expand all the way. I laid on the bed for 3 minutes and liked it so much I decided to purchase a king size for my husband and I. My daughter loves her mattress. It is beyond comfortable. Don’t be turned off by the price. Even though it’s cheaper the mattress is of high quality.

Price and quality: It deserves a 5-star except that I think the dimension for the width of the twin bed is OFF . it is 37 or 38 inches NOT 39 inches as it says on the web as far as I can see. I was worried it would NOT fit my 38 inch bed but it fit perfectly. Please fix your specifications.

I love this mattress. It has the perfect amount of firm and plushness to be like sleeping on a cloud. After having many a mattress over the years I have to say this is by far the best. My only gripe with this product is that if you are a heavier person, like me, then it seems the springs won’t last too long, considering when they get compressed too much they make a popping sound. I wish they made a 10 or 12 inch mattress just like this, that would be great!

Wow! What an awesome mattress for the price! This arrived quickly and we immediately took it out of the box. It easily unfolded and within minutes it was at its normal size. So soft! And it’s firm but not too firm. Perfect for my 5 year old!

It is a very firm mattress, considering it came rolled up in a box. It is also a very lightweight mattress, I had not trouble getting out of the box by myself. I am 60 years old with arthritis and did not need any help.

Come compacted just watch out opening it will spring out quick lol it’s firm like my mattress soft so I ordered a foam mattress go on top 3inch gel worked out great comfy sleep.

Great buy. The price is great but the mattress s is Awesome. I bought two mattresses. 1 named brand and more expensive and liked this one better. Wish I would have bought 2 of these.

Very comfortable, softer than a hard bed, love the memory foam. Price is certainly reasonable. Quick delivery, even over the holidays. Will definitely consider again.

This mattress is very comfortable. Best purchase I’ve made in quite some time.

This mattress is awesome. It’s medium firm, it’s perfect for a good nights sleep! It’s also a lot of fun to open the box it comes in. Yes, a box! You’ll see why when you purchase one. Hehe

This bed was so much better than I thought it would be. It is for my 18 year old son and he loves it. It didn’t take long to get up to the 8 inch size and is very soft. He loves it!

I ordered this mattress for my daughter. I was a bit skeptical I’m the quality it would be because it was so cheap. But for the price I decided to try it. The mattress came rolled up in a box such I had never seen. I opened the box and plastic and instantly it started to expand. My daughter slept on it that night and loved it. The mattress is on the firmer side but very comfortable.

It’s really cool that you can order a mattress and have it shipped in a semi small box to your home! This is very nice and comedy for being a hybrid. It has about an inch to two inches of memory foam on top of the springs so it’s very comfortable. The fabric is nice and soft too. This would be perfect for a guest bedroom and or for a kid maybe not for every day sleeping for an adult but definitely for a teen. My son loves this mattress and the price was right!

I love this bed. My family thought I was crazy buying a mattress from the internet without ever laying on it but I had a good feeling about this mattress so I did it. I just bought it sight unseen. I am SOOO happy that I purchased this bed. It is so comfortable. The outer layer is nice and soft to the touch, it is true to size so the sheets fit, which is great, it is soft yet supportive which is why I went with the memory foam/innerspring hybrid mattress. I was a little concerned when I saw the bed arrive in a tall skinny box but we brought it in and opened it up and as we were cutting the outer plastic layer that sucker just popped right open. Freaked my husband right out. It didn’t take long and it unfolded and came right back up to size. It was really neat to watch and even better to sleep on. Even my husband agrees and that is hard to get him to do. If you are on the fence about buying this mattress I highly recommend it, you won’t be disappointed.

This is AWESOME! So nice not to have to deal with delivery trucks and delivery guys. This came in the mail, easy peasy. Opened it up, and the kids LOVED how it was vacuum sealed and popped right up. They immediately jumped on it. LOL Got this for my son’s 4th bday- he is so excited. I wish I could show you the video of how excited he is! I love the foam topper on it. Even with joint pain, I feel very comfortable on this mattress.

This is a very nice mattress. I was very surprised about how compact it was upon arrival. Once you carefully open, it takes a few hours to fully expand (even though it really pops right out of the package). The mattress is really soft and comfortable. It contours to your body and isn’t incredibly bouncy when you move about. For a thinner mattress, it actually is very comfortable and provides excellent support.

I purchased 2 semifirm mattresses and both are quite good. however, semi firm is not as firm as it should be. next time ill go with firm..but overall very comfortable..

I needed a new mattress and I did a lot of research before picking this one. There are a lot of popular online mattress stores (casper, lisa, purple, tuft and needle) but all of them were way out of my budget, especially since I wanted a queen. I saw this one had great reviews and I price I could afford so I chanced it. It shipped quickly and arrived rolled up in a long box. After I cut the plastic, the mattress began to hiss and expand with air. It was really cool. Within a few hours it was ready. I’ve been sleeping on it for 3 months now and have no complaints. It’s the perfect mix between soft and firm.

Great bargain. Just what I needed for a twin bed. Feels comfortable.

I got this product about 2 months ago after looking at various options. Couldn’t be happier with the product. Was packaged well, so it was very easy to unroll and start using it. The Full size was the perfect size for 1 person, and a lot firmer and than similar mattresses with other companies. Recommended the same to another friend, and would definitely buy again!

I opened my 2" topper 4 days ago and placed it on a flat surface in a well ventilated room as instructed. It is now 96 hrs (4 days), and only about 70% has expanded and it appears that the remainder will not expand. I am very upset as I now have to worry about returning a partially expanded mattress topping.

Bear Mattress Overview

Bear is a U.S.-based mattress and bedding accessory brand that first launched in 2015. The company specializes in products designed for people with active lifestyles. Currently, Bear offers three mattress models. This review will take an in-depth look at theBear Mattress, the brand’s flagship all-foam model.

The Bear Mattress is constructed with comfort layers of gel-infused graphite memory foam and polyfoam, along with a polyfoam transitional layer and a high-density foam base. Altogether the mattress measures 10 inches thick. The surface has a medium feel, which corresponds to a 5.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

A standout feature of the Bear Mattress is its cover. The cover’s fabric blend includes Celliant fabric, a material engineered to convert body heat into infrared energy, then transmit it back into the sleeper through their skin. The process is intended to increase tissue oxygenation, which helps the body recover more quickly after workouts and other physically demanding activities. This in turn can improve overall sleep quality and duration.

Read on to learn all about the Bear Mattress. Our review includes full construction specs, current prices, and performance ratings based on owner reviews and our own product testing. We’ll also compare the mattress to other leading models with similar features and provide an overview of Bear’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

Recommended for.

  • Sleepers who enjoy a balance of body-conforming and support. With a medium feel, the Bear Mattress contours to the body without sagging or hugging too closely. The result for most sleepers is a feeling somewhere in between sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.
  • People who weigh 230 pounds or less.Although the Bear Mattress earned favorable ratings from our testers across different weight groups, the most positive feedback came from those in the lightweight and average weight groups.
  • Couples. The mattress isolates motion transfer very well and does not produce any noise, making it ideal for people who awaken easily due to their sleep partner’s movements.
  • Physically active people. The bed’s Celliant fabric cover is engineered to help the sleeper’s body recover during the night, which can be particularly beneficial for those who exercise regularly or have physically demanding professions.
  • Value seekers.Compared to other high-quality memory foam models, the Bear Mattress has a below-average price-point.

Not Recommended for.

  • Those who prefer deep body-conforming.Although the Bear Mattress contours to the body, it does not provide the same pressure-relieving cradle as beds with a more traditional memory foam feel.
  • People seeking a mattress with strong edge support. The Bear Mattress is prone to significant sinkage when people sit along the perimeter, and those who lie near the edges while sleeping report feelings of “roll-off.”

Temperature Neutrality

The temperature of a mattress throughout the night is affected by how much body heat is retained. Several factors affect temperature neutrality, including material composition, layer thickness, and dissipation of heat through airflow.

All-foam mattresses typically sleep hot, and while the Bear Mattress is not actively cooling, it does an adequate job keeping your body at an even temperature throughout the night.

Edge Support

The degree to which the perimeter of the mattress supports body weight. In some cases, mattresses may sink when weight is applied. This sinkage, often called “roll-off”, affects how closely you might sleep to the edge of the bed.

Edge support is a chief complaint with the Bear Mattress, as many owners say their bed sags in places where they sit to get on or off the bed.

Mattresses that are bouncier and more responsive tend to be better for sex, as they’re easier to change positions on. In contrast, unresponsive mattresses can cause couples to have trouble switching positions.

Like many other memory foam models, the Bear Mattress may not be responsive or bouncy enough for some couples.

How Is the Bear Mattress Constructed?

The Bear Mattress has a cover made from a blend of polyester and Celliant performance fabric. Celliant is designed to absorb body heat from sleepers, convert it into infrared energy, and transmit the energy back into the sleeper. This process is intended to improve blood circulation and promote physical recovery.

The cover is designed to create a cooling sleep surface. That said, the mattress may still trap some body heat and sleep somewhat warm due to its foam layers.

Comfort Layers

The Bear Mattress has a 2-inch comfort layer of gel-infused graphite memory foam. The material conforms to the sleeper’s body to a noticeable extent, but not as closely as memory foam layers found in many competing models. This creates a combined feeling of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.

Transitional Layer

A 2-inch transitional layer of polyfoam rests beneath the comfort layer. This component acts as a buffer that prevents sleepers from sinking into the firmer, denser support core.

Support Layers

The Bear Mattress has a 6-inch support core of high-density polyfoam. This component works with the transitional layer to reinforce and stabilize the entire mattress, maintaining an even plane for sleepers. That said, our testing revealed the bed’s support core does little to minimize sinkage along the edges. Check out our ‘Edge Support’ rating breakdown for more details.

Mattress Height

The Bear Mattress measures 10 inches thick, making it a medium-profile mattress. Denser polyfoam in the transitional and base layers constitutes most of the bed’s height. As a result, the mattress sacrifices comfort layer thickness and closer body-conforming for more overall support.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Bear Mattress has a medium feel, and conforms moderately to the sleeper’s body without sinking very much. The bed is also fairly responsive compared to other memory foam beds, giving the surface a light bounce.

The Bear Mattress does not offer the same floating feel as most innersprings or hybrids, but the comfort layers do not form the same pressure-relieving body cradle as more traditional memory foam models. Rather, its combination of contouring and support creates a feeling somewhere in between sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Bear Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as reviews from verified mattress owners.

The Bear Mattress was first introduced in 2015. As a result, we have not had sufficient time to evaluate this model across the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Our durability rating is based on the bed’s quality of materials and construction, owner experiences, and Bear’s overall reputation.

We estimate the Bear Mattress will perform for about six and a half to seven years before it needs to be replaced. This expected lifespan is on par with the average memory foam mattress. The mattress is well-made and features a thick support system. However, the foam layers may begin to deteriorate as the mattress nears the end of its lifespan. This can lead to sagging, body impressions, and other wear-and-tear issues that impact how supportive the mattress feels.

To protect the bed’s surface from sagging and body impressions, we recommend rotating the mattress head-to-foot every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

To evaluate the Bear Mattress for motion isolation, we asked two testers to lie down on the mattress at the same time. One tester moved around while the other felt for motion transfer across the bed’s surface. The Bear Mattress exhibited excellent motion isolation during these assessments, as neither tester could feel any transfer.

Memory foam mattresses often excel at motion isolation. The comfort layers are slower to respond, allowing the material to absorb transfer and prevent it from spreading to other areas of the bed. The Bear Mattress is slightly more responsive than average, but its comfort layer still eliminates motion transfer.

Our testers noticed some initial off-gassing odor when unboxing the Bear Mattress. When they returned to re-evaluate the mattress a few days later, they found the smells had mostly dissipated. Owner experiences with the Bear Mattress also suggest odor is not a major long-term issue.

All mattresses produce off-gassing smells when they are removed from their packaging. All-foam mattresses tend to be smellier than other models because they emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which carry a distinct chemical odor. However, these smells usually dissipate from most beds in a matter of days, and the Bear Mattress is no exception.

Pressure Relief

Our testers evaluated the Bear Mattress for pressure relief by lying on a sensory pad that detects pressure build-up in the shoulders, hips, and other sensitive areas of the body. They also switched positions to see if pressure increased or decreased on their sides, back, and stomach.

Overall, the testers noted very good pressure relief but their experiences varied by weight. Those who weigh 230 pounds or less experienced consistent pressure relief with little to no added discomfort. Our heavyweight testers, on the other hand, noted some pressure in the shoulders.

Temperature Neutrality

Like many competing memory foam models, the Bear Mattress can be a heat trap for some sleepers. That said, the bed demonstrated good temperature neutrality. The mattress does not conform too closely, resulting in better surface airflow than models that form a deep cradle around the sleeper’s body.

Edge Support

To evaluate the mattress for edge support, our testers sat along the perimeter as an owner might do when getting in and out of bed. Testers across all weight groups noticed significant sinkage. They also took turns lying near the edges of the mattress to check for feelings of “roll-off.” Each of our testers reported some instability, especially those who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Many all-foam beds offer minimal edge support because their base layers are not robust enough to withstand sinkage. Comparatively, innerspring and hybrid models offer better perimeter reinforcement due to their sturdier coil support cores.

During our tests, the Bear Mattress was virtually silent when bearing weight. This is a common characteristic of all-foam beds. Other mattress types can be somewhat loud due to certain internal components, such as the squeaky coils in innerspring and hybrid models, or the motorized air chambers in airbeds.

Thanks to its noise-free design and excellent motion isolation, the Bear Mattress is ideal for people who awaken easily due to their sleep partner’s movements during the night.

The Bear Mattress does not conform as closely as other memory foam models, and feels more responsive. For many couples, these characteristics represent a happy medium for sex. The mattress has some springiness, allowing them to utilize the bed’s entire surface, but the comfort layer conforms deeply enough to provide decent traction.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness settings for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, the Tuck team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Overall, our lightweight sleep testers found the Bear Mattress reasonably comfortable. However, their experiences varied by sleep position. The most favorable ratings came from back-sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds. These testers experienced a very good balance of body-contouring and support, noting the bed alleviated pressure without sagging too much.

Our lightweight side-sleepers also reported good support, but found the mattress somewhat firm. Compared to softer beds, they did not feel the same cushioning beneath the shoulders and hips needed for even spinal alignment. Stomach-sleepers in this weight group experienced some sagging around the midsection, but also gave the mattress a good overall rating.

Lightweight sleepers generally prefer soft to medium-soft mattresses. Firmer beds do not conform as closely to their bodies, and this prevents them from experiencing optimal levels of pressure relief.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

The best overall ratings for the Bear Mattress came from sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds. Side-sleepers noted adequate padding beneath their shoulders and hips, resulting in even alignment, while back-sleepers appreciated the medium feel and even support. For stomach-sleepers, the mattress offered adequate body-conforming but also sagged a bit.

Average weight sleepers often find medium-soft to medium-firm beds most comfortable because they alleviate pressure while maintaining even support. Softer beds are prone to more sagging, while firmer beds do not conform closely enough to target pressure points.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Ratings were mixed for our heavyweight testers. Side-sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds felt some added pressure in the shoulders, while back-sleepers experienced sagging around the hips that made the mattress feel less supportive.

Our heavyweight stomach-sleepers experienced significant sagging. Uneven support is a common issue associated with this sleep position because many people carry a large portion of their weight in the stomach. As their bodies sink into the mattress, sleepers are more likely to develop neck and shoulder pain.

Heavier sleepers typically prefer medium-firm to firm mattresses. Softer beds sag too much, resulting in uneven support and added pressure. The Bear Mattress has mid-level firmness and some responsiveness, but our testing suggests it may be too soft for some people weighing more than 230 pounds – stomach-sleepers in particular.

How Does the Bear Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

When searching for a new mattress, we urge shoppers to compare different brands and models in order to find their most suitable option. In this next section, we’ll see how the Bear Mattress stacks up against other Bear models and similarly constructed mattresses from competing brands.

Bear Mattress vs. Bear Hybrid

Like the Bear Mattress, the Bear Hybrid features a cover made with Celliant fabric to aid physical recovery for sleepers. The hybrid also has a deep comfort system along with extra foam padding quilted into the cover, resulting in very good pressure relief for most sleepers across different weight and position groups.

There are some notable differences, as well. The Bear Hybrid has thick pocketed coils to reinforce the comfort and transitional layers, resulting in better overall support. The coils also promote steady airflow to help keep the mattress cool, giving the hybrid better temperature neutrality than its all-foam counterpart. However, the Bear Mattress is less responsive and better and isolating motion transfer.

The Bear Hybrid is the more expensive option, but its price-point is much lower than the average hybrid model’s. Customers with a flexible budget should choose the hybrid if they prefer better cooling and a more responsive surface, while the Bear Mattress is better suited to couples.

Bear Mattress vs. Bear Pro

The Bear Pro is an all-foam mattress with comfort layers of copper-infused polyfoam and gel memory foam. The bed has a medium-firm feel and does not conform as closely as the Bear Mattress, but each model offers very good pressure relief to most sleepers across different weight and position groups.

These models earned comparable ratings in other performance categories, including durability, temperature neutrality, and noise. Both beds also feature the Celliant-blend cover for faster physical recovery, though only the Bear Pro’s can be removed for cleaning. One key difference is responsiveness, as the Bear Pro has a bouncier feel than the Bear Mattress. As a result, the Bear Mattress provides better motion isolation. However, the Bear Pro’s firmer feel ensures stronger edge support.

The Bear Mattress costs less than the Bear Pro, but both models are fairly low-priced. Due to the many similarities between these beds, shoppers should base their decision on firmness, responsiveness, and motion isolation preferences.

Bear Mattress vs. The Casper

The Casper is a mixed-foam mattress constructed with polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers, along with a high-density polyfoam base. Like the Bear Mattress, the Casper offers excellent motion isolation for couples and very good pressure relief.

The Casper is a bit softer, and offers a more traditional memory foam feel akin to sleeping “in” the mattress. However, the firmer Bear Mattress is better suited to average weight and heavyweight sleepers. The Bear Mattress is also better for sex due to its more responsive surface, whereas the Casper is prone to excessive sagging during amorous activities.

The Casper and Bear Mattress have comparable price-points. Sleepers who enjoy a combination of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress should opt for the Bear Mattress, while those who prefer a softer feel and closer conforming will likely find the Casper more comfortable.

Bear Mattress vs. Loom & Leaf

The Loom & Leaf by Saatva is a luxury mattress made with 4.5 inches of memory foam comfort layers. Sleepers experience a deep, pressure-relieving cradle for their bodies, and this creates a feeling of sleeping “in” the mattress.

The Loom & Leaf is available in two firmness settings. The medium (5.5) option is very comparable to the Bear Mattress in terms of moderate body-conforming and a supportive feel, while the firm (8) option provides better support for heavier individuals. Beyond these differences, the Loom & Leaf and Bear Mattress are fairly similar.

Both beds provide very good pressure relief and isolate motion transfer very well. They also have weaker edges prone to deep sinkage when owners sit along the perimeter.

The Loom & Leaf is considerably more expensive than the Bear Mattress. However, all Loom & Leaf orders qualify for free White Glove delivery, which includes in-home setup and old mattress removal. The Loom & Leaf’s firm setting may also be the best option for heavier individuals.

Bear Mattress vs. Nectar Mattress

The Nectar Mattress is constructed with two memory foam comfort layers, along with a memory foam transitional layer. This makes it ideal for those who enjoy sleeping “in” the mattress, while the Bear Mattress is a better option for people who like a balance of body-conforming and even support.

The Nectar and Bear Mattresses both offer excellent motion isolation and do not produce any noise when bearing weight, making either a good option for people whose sleep is easily disturbed. The Nectar Mattress also sleeps relatively cool thanks to its low- and medium-density comfort layers, giving both models comparable temperature neutrality.

The Nectar and Bear Mattresses are both low-priced and considered high-value picks due to their quality of construction. We recommend the Bear Mattress for those who like a balance of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the bed, as well as physically active people who benefit from the Celliant-blend cover. Those who like a more traditional memory foam feel should opt for the Nectar Mattress instead.

Bear Mattress vs. T&N Mint

The T&N Mint from Tuft & Needle is an all-polyfoam model constructed with a graphite- and gel-infused comfort layer, transitional polyfoam layer, and a 7-inch high-density foam base. The T&N Mint’s more robust support system, combined with its medium-firm feel, makes the mattress better suited to side-, back- and stomach-sleepers weighing 230 pounds or less.

Both beds offer a combination of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress due to a good balance of body-contouring and support. Like the Bear Mattress, the T&N Mint also has a fairly responsive feel but also isolates motion very well, and both beds are silent when bearing weight.

The Bear Mattress is the less expensive model, but both mattresses are reasonably priced. The T&N Mint may be more comfortable for sleepers in the lightweight and average weight groups, but the Bear Mattress remains the better option for physically active people.
