Green tea extract is added to Zinus foams. The purpose is two-fold: odor control and freshness. Green tea extract is used in other applications as a natural antiseptic on the skin, and an antimicrobial agent in products. Other materials are infused into the foam, such as active charcoal, to absorb moisture.
Flexible polyurethane foam (polyfoam) was developed around the time of World War II, and began to be used in seat cushions soon after. In the 1950s, some foam mattresses were made byFirestone,the rubber tire company, but they were latex (foam rubber). Polyurethane foam mattresses were added later. Until memory foam was first available to consumers in 1991, foam mattresses consisted of either polyfoam or latex.
In memory foam mattresses, as well as in most latex mattresses, the role of polyurethane foam is mostly as the very dense support core. Also known asvisco-elastic foam, memory foam was developed to be self-adjusting cushioning for astronauts’ launch seats in space craft to absorb G-forces at lift-off. Lighter memory foam is less temperature sensitive, so it does not get as hot. It also is softer initially, not waiting to warm up to lose stiffness. Dr. Rick Swartzburg pioneered the use of multiple weights of memory foam in a mattress with theTri-Pedic. This uses 4-lb. memory foam in the top with 5-lb. memory foam in the second layer. This was both cooler and more initially responsive than the use of only 5-lb. foam.
As noted onSleep Like the Dead(SLTD), Zinus beds use only 3-lb. memory foam. Memory foam this light does not hold up well. This shows up onSLTD’s owner satisfaction results forZinusmemory foam mattresses. This was very much greater for mattresses used for limited adult use of everyday child use (88-91%) than for everyday adult use (70-78%).
Sleep EZ, comparing it to latex, says about memory foam, “12 years on the market, 5 lb density has proven durability, 4 lb second generation has proven durability, 3 lb density will break down very quickly. Being imported from China-very inferior.” This basically agrees with Dr. Rick Swartzburg’s assessment of memory foam which is too light, and that which is made in Asia.
In at least five memory foam mattress models byZinus, the memory foam is infused with gel. The gel is for initial cooling.Zinusalso refers to gel’s semi-fluid support properties.
Effective cooling with gel is short term unless there is an outlet for heat dissipation. Gel is initially cool after sitting for hours, so it quickly absorbs heat when the sleeper lies on it. After a while, the gel has reached the limit of its heat absorption. Then it is warm, unless there is a route for it to conduct the heat away from the user to be released. Here is where positive airflow is more effective. It also makes a difference the form of gel infusion. Swirls of liquid gel are more effective, since they conduct heat more efficiently than beads. If gel foam is ventilated, the flowing air can absorb heat and carry it away.
In mostZinusmemory foam mattresses, the height of the support core is less than half the height of the mattress, but more than a third. The memory foam is not always on top, but in some models is the second layer down, especially when Viscolatex is used. Some of the foams are ventilated, while others rely on open cells for airflow.
Zinususes jacquard knits in its covers. Knit stretches along more than one axis, which makes it conformable with the foams. This ensures that the sleeper can experience the feel of the top foam layer. Knit is naturally breathable, and the knit-in patterns of jacquard give the surface a texture making it more breathable. If you’ve heard about memory foam, you may wonder if it could improve the quality ofyoursleep. Some people swear by it. Others are less enthusiastic.
What exactly is memory foam? And what are its pros and cons? Here’s information to help you decide whether memory foam is worth a try.
What Is Memory Foam?
First designed in the mid-1960s for NASA airplane seats, memory foam is made from a substance called viscoelastic. It is both highly energy absorbent and soft.
Memory foam molds to the body in response to heat and pressure, evenly distributing body weight. It then returns to its original shape once you remove the pressure.
In addition to protecting against impact, these properties make memory foam very comfortable. After its "virgin flight" for NASA, memory foam made a foray into other applications. For example, it was used as cushioning in helmets and shoes. Medicine found a use for it in prosthetics and products to prevent pressure ulcers such as seating pads for people who are severely disabled.
Then, memory foam really took off. It’s now well known for its use in pillows, mattress pads, and mattresses, which come in different densities and depths.
What Are the Benefits of Memory Foam?
Could the special properties of memory foam enhance your sleep? Sleep specialist Donna L. Arand, PhD, says that objective studies supporting the claimed benefits of memory foam — or the effects of any particular type of sleeping surface — are lacking.
This is true for a variety of reasons, she says. This type of sleep study can be expensive, if conducted independently. Or it is "chased" by a shadow of bias, if supported by industry.
Also, some sleep technology, such as memory foam, is relatively new, so it hasn’t been well studied. But perhaps one of the more difficult stumbling blocks to testing the health benefits of mattresses such as memory foam is the subjective nature of sleep. It is simply difficult to measure.
Sometimes the brain’s electrical activity, measured with an electroencephalogram (EEG), and other findings recorded during a sleep test don’t always match up perfectly with a person’s subjective experience, says Arand, who is the clinical director of the Kettering Sleep Disorders Center in Dayton, Ohio. "They might say, вЂI had a great night’s sleep,’ but the EEG parameters might not really indicate that."
Sleep is not only subjective, but preferences for sleep surfaces are individual, Arand says. "There’s quite a bit of variability between individuals in terms of what type of surface — whether it’s firm, hard, or soft — they prefer when they’re sleeping," she says. "As far as we know, there is no rhyme or reason for that."
Many of Arand’s patients who use memory foam have offered unsolicited glowing reports like these about memory foam: "I’m sleeping great." "Best sleep I’ve ever had." "I love going to bed at night." Arand says these anecdotal responses may be one-sided. That’s because she and other staff don’t ask all their patients about their sleep surfaces. "We may only be hearing the good stuff," Arand says.
Kathy R. Gromer, MD, sleep specialist with the Minnesota Sleep Institute in Minneapolis, agrees that memory foam may improve sleep. "It can, if it relieves painful pressure points," she says. But Gromer adds that memory foam doesn’t do anything for sleep apnea or other sleep-breathing disorders — and sleep disorders are the primary complaint of most her patients.
"When you lie on the memory foam, the heat from your body softens it in appropriate points," Arand says, "so this helps to support your body along the curves and natural lines of the body." Memory foam manufacturers claim this helps relieve pain and thereby promotes more restful sleep. And, though consumers often believe that very firm mattresses are best, more "giving" mattresses like these may lead to better sleep in people with back pain, according to the National Sleep Foundation.
Although there aren’t scientific data to support the hypothesis, Arand wonders whether memory foam sleep surfaces might be especially helpful for older people. For them, minimizing extra movement could reduce the number of times they awaken during the night. Being less aware of a bed partner’s movements might be an extra benefit, she adds. "Without the coiled springs, you feel your sleep partner’s movement less, and that might help, too."
What Are the Disadvantages of Memory Foam?
Gromer says that memory foam products may retain body heat, which could make them less comfortable in warm weather. However, Arand has not heard this complaint from her patients. "In our culture, most people can adjust their thermostats or blankets for the appropriate season," Arand says.
When new, memory foam can produce an odd chemical smell — a phenomenon called offgassing. To minimize this problem, the Sleep Products Safety Council, a sleep products trade group, recommends airing out the mattress or pad for at least 24 hours before putting sheets on it. "If you follow directions, the smell dissipates quickly," Arand says, "But I’ve never heard of anyone having reactions to it."
Are Memory Foam Products Safe for Young Children?
"I would strongly recommend avoiding this and similar very soft materials for use in infants’ beds," Gromer says. "That’s because soft bedding traps [carbon dioxide] and increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) deaths."

How long before you can sleep on a memory foam mattress?
Just got a 10” memory foam mattress via FedEx today. It came rolled in a big, thick tube and immediately started to take its shape as soon as i took the packaging off.
My friend has a similar type and says I need need to wait 48–72 hours before I can lay on it. Is this true? I’d love to sleep on it tomorrow night but don’t want to screw up the shape of my new investment. It seems to be fully “settled” btw. I know good things come to those who are patient but that’s never been my strong suit!

I would expect the mattress came with instructions for this and I am sure you can contact the manufacturer or point of purchase to ask this question.
You should do as the instructions say. I am guessing 48 hours will be enough.
Even though it seems settled, it is probably still working it out.
So, honest question, what would be the worst case scenario of sleeping on your stable foam mattress? It came in a tube. They weren’t worried about that permanently deforming it, and I would imagine it took more force to keep it that way then you would exert in any one area.
Wouldn’t your worst case be not getting the “full experience” that first night? You’re not going to damage foam by doing exactly what it was designed for.
Sleep on that bad boy as soon as you can stand the smell.

@LeavesNoTrace I myself heard it is good to give it time to “air out” to allow any gasses from the manufacturing process out-gas new foam odors
@Cruiser Your link was interesting. I once bought a foam mattress and I returned it because it smelled so bad I thought it was poison. I’m not sure I am convinced it wasn’t even after reading your article, but it was still interesting.
We slept on ours the first night.
If we had waited for the smell to improve, we probably would have waited a year. We ended up putting a down-filled pillow-top on it (kind of like a thick comforter under our mattress pad) for many months, which both helped us adjust to sleeping on just foam and helped with the smell.
I have never heard of this, and slept on my memory foam the same night it was delivered, but it was not rolled up, the mattress was deliverd from the store I bought it from. I did, however, order a huge memory foam bean bag love seat and it took about 2 days to fully expand.
@JLeslie I work with these types of polymers and IMO these mattresses should come with a full disclosure MSDS sheet as the link I gave pointed out there are many different types of polyurethane foams and some I would not be around without a NIOSH approved respirator. Knowing how foreign manufacturers like to make things on the I would have to have full disclosure of the isoscyantes and flame retardansts used in production of the mattress.
@Cruiser It was made in China and it made me nervous. I returned it. I truly feel it was poison, I don’t know what the chemicals were.
When I worked in retail once in a while a group of clothing would come in that also smelled like poison. We figured it was for shipping purposes, maybe to prevent pests? Although, it didn’t smell like bug spray as much as it smelled chemically, to use a scientific term. It usually was from an Asian country, as in the continent of, but sometimes we received clothes from Asia that did not have that smell. I guess it was certain manufacturers or transporters.
Well I don’t blame you @JLeslie and part of the reason I avoided buying one is there are little to no testing done on these foam composites long term health effects. The sites I visited to find info were chock full of people with adverse health symptoms when they slept on these.
They are amazing to lay on and the same research I read says there are greener alternatives on the market now with less odor complaints.
@JLeslie Oh gosh, now your scaring me! When I took mine out of the package it didn’t smell like anything at all. I’m hoping that’s a good sign…
@LeavesNoTrace From what @Cruiser wrote it sounds like yours is ok. Maybe it is one of the greener ones.
