There’s a lot of new bedding innovations out there, but classics are classics for a reason. If you’re in the market for a more traditional innerspring feel with a few modern touches, Saatva might be the right mattress for you.

This brand is billed as luxury kept affordable with an online sales model. Is it a truly luxurious feel? What does the pillowtop do for it, can you honestly use this on an adjustable base?

Our Saatva mattress reviewwill investigate all these questions, focusing on the most versatile Luxury Firm. (It also comes in Firm, Plush Soft, and HD.) Of course, if you want to cut to the chase, you’re welcome to jump down to our conclusion.

Who Do We Think Matches With Saatva?

  • Classic Innerspring Sleepers– This bed has not only one, but two innerspring units that make up its construction, taking advantage of both connected and individually wrapped coils to provide an updated take on a classic feel.
  • Affordable Luxury Shoppers– This brand aims to prove that luxury doesn’t have to come from a store, and their line of mattresses was designed to impress with tall silhouettes, classy looks, and durable constructions — all without breaking the bank.
  • Heavier Folks– The Saatva classic has a lot of great support ideal for sleepers looking for a more robust bed, and the company’s recently introduced an HD model designed specifically for plus size sleepers over 300 pounds.

Possible Saatva Complaints:

  • It doesn’t come in a box.– If the main reason you’re shopping for mattresses on the internet is that you need a brand compressed into an easy to transport box, this might not be your brand. However, this mattress comes with free white glove delivery, so you can still leave the heavy lifting to the professionals.
  • The foundation coils are connected.– There’s a lot to love about individually wrapped coils, and the bed’s first innerspring layer does have these motion-isolating, modern construction for more tailored support. By using connected coils in the foundation, the company claims to improve durability.

Saatva gets its name from the ancient Sanskrit word for “pure,” and this company, launched in 2011, was one among the original online mattress companies. Their aim was to provide a more eco-conscious line of mattresses that had a luxury feel that didn’t wreck your budget.

To round out their line, the company also offers a memory foam bed called Loom & Leaf and a dual-sided latex choice called Zenhaven. All three brands are built to be compatible with the company’s adjustable frame, on which they co-collaborated with industry mainstay, Leggett and Platt. In 2019, the brand introduced an HD version of their classic innerspring for heavier sleepers, as well as an adjustable mattress called the Solaire.

Construction: What’s Inside Saatva?

All Classic Saatvas, available 11.5 inches tall or 14.5 inches tall, are covered with natural cotton that is naturally breathable. It is stitched to 1.25 inch layer of foam to form the bed’s Euro-style pillow top, which aids pressure relief. The fabric is treated to give it anti-microbial properties.

  • Below the pillow top, on the center third of the mattress, a unique lumbar area has been created with memory foam. It has a noticeably different feel from the rest of the mattress and was designed to relieve back tension.
  • Going deeper, the first layer of coilsis revealed under foam transition layer. Under the lumbar panel, zoning in the coils boosts support in the central third of the mattress. This layer and the layer beneath it are made from recycled steel.
  • The lower layer connected coilsare 7-inch steel hourglass-shaped support coils. They help prevent sagging and provide support. In addition, the coil-on-coil design helps with air circulation and gives the bed a good amount of bounce.
  • The edgesare encased in a sturdy, thick foam (which is also found on its base) to deliver enhanced edge support and make every inch of the surface usable.

Saatva comes in two different heights, which will affect some layers, but not their number or contents. The HD model swaps out the first layer of coils for 5-zoned Talalay latex foam and contouring memory foam.

First Impression: How Does It Feel?

Saatva is delivered full-size so there’s no waiting period common to online mattresses delivered in smaller boxes. It can be dressed immediately. The stitching looks expensive and tugging on it reveals its long-term durability.

Settling into the bed, you should feel contouring in your lumbar from the memory foam, while the plush Eurotop relieves pressure on your shoulders. Saatva’s dual coil system gives the sleeper a springy experience, covered in plush luxury.

Saatva Classic vs. Saatva HD: 9 Key Differences

Innerspring mattresses have been around forever (well, since the 1880s anyway)—and in recent years they’ve gotten a major upgrade. Often called hybrid mattresses, these newer versions of innerspring mattresses feature a coil base topped with foam layers for added comfort and support. Saatva has two luxury hybrid mattresses in its portfolio, Saatva Classic and Saatva HD.

Both mattresses are made with premium materials and come with Saatva’s signature 120-night trial and 24/7 customer support, but they do have some key differences. Here, we break down the most important differences between the Saatva Classic and Saatva HD so you can determine which one is right for you.

1. Weight limit

Your weight should inform what type of mattress is best for you. Hybrid mattresses are a good option for a wide range of body types because they’re responsive, supportive, and sleep cool.

The Saatva Classic is suitable for most body types and supports up to 300 pounds per side. The Saatva HD is the first luxury mattress designed exclusively for bigger bodies and supports up to 500 pounds per side. If you’re under 300 pounds, we recommend the Saatva Classic; if you’re over 300 pounds, we recommend the Saatva HD.

2. Comfort levels

Saatva uses a scale of 1-10 (with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest) to describe how each of our comfort levels feels. The Saatva Classic is available in three comfort levels. Spinal support is the same regardless of comfort level—it’s just the softness or firmness of the foam layers that make a difference. Here’s what you need to know about each one:

  • Plush soft(around a 3) has a deep, body-hugging feel thanks to softer foams and extra padding in the pillow top. It’s ideal for side sleepers and lighter-weight individuals.
  • Luxury firm, our #1 seller, has a medium-firm feel (around a 5-7). It’s great for a range of sleep positions and light- to average-weight individuals.
  • Firm(around an 8), has firmer foams and is recommended for stomach sleepers or anyone who prefers the feel of a very firm mattress.

The Saatva HD has one comfort level—medium firm (around a 5-7). The reason the Saatva HD is only available in one comfort level is that bigger bodies sleep better on a firmer mattress. A medium-firm to firm comfort level will help keep your spine aligned without causing the mattress to sag.

The Saatva HD’s durable coil base is engaged only when a high-weight person lies on the mattress, resulting in a firm, responsive feel comparable to the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm comfort level. A person weighing less than 300 pounds will experience only the plush upper layers of the Saatva HD for a feel similar to that of a luxury memory foam mattress.

3. Coil construction

The heart of a hybrid mattress is the coil base. The Saatva Classic features a “coil-on-coil” system, consisting of a steel coil support base made with tempered, recycled steel to provide stability and resist sagging. This is topped with a second layer of individually wrapped coils to add contouring ability and reduce motion transfer. Both layers of coils are encased in foam for increased edge support.

The Saatva HD has a single layer of tempered, recycled steel coils in its base. These coils are threaded with a helical wire to add contouring ability and eliminate motion transfer. The entire coil unit is encased with high-density foam for increased edge support, which makes it easier to get in and out of bed.

4. Coil gauge

Coils come in different thicknesses, known as gauge. The higher the gauge, the thinner and more flexible the coil. The lower the number, the thicker and more supportive. A premium mattress should have a coil gauge between 12 and 15.

The Saatva Classic’s base layer of coils is made with 13-gauge coils for durability, while the individually-wrapped comfort coils in the top layer are made with 14.5-gauge coils. The top layer of coils is thinner and more flexible so it can respond and contour to your body.

Bigger bodies should choose a mattress with thicker coils, as this will prevent sagging and ensure you don’t wake up with back pain. The Saatva HD’s single coil unit is made of 12.5-gauge coils, the strongest in the industry, for maximum durability and resistance to sagging. The helical wire is made from flexible 17-gauge steel for contouring.

Saatva Classic Innerspring

Our flagship luxury mattress is expertly engineered with coil-on-coil construction for durability, a layer of memory foam for enhanced back support, and a cushiony Euro pillow top for extra comfort.

Saatva HD Hybrid Mattress

This luxury hybrid innerspring mattress is specifically engineered to support people weighing between 300 and 500 pounds. Plush upper layers made of foam and latex deliver comfort, while a high-durability coil base offers support.

5. Lumbar support

Lumbar zone reinforcement strengthens a mattress in the center third, where most people’s weight is concentrated. Sleeping on a mattress without proper lumbar support will throw off spinal alignment and lead to aches and pains.

The Saatva Classic adds lumbar support with active wire technology, which encircles and strengthens the area from shoulders to hips. The mattress also has a 1/2-inch layer of memory foam in the lumbar region. The cushioning foam provides a layer of pressure relief, while the extra support helps maintain healthy spinal position.

The Saatva HD adds lumbar support with the same active wire technology used in the Saatva Classic. It also has a 1 1/2-inch layer of 5-zone firm Talalay latex for additional back support. Talalay latex provides a cooler sleep surface (beneficial for heavier people who sleep hot) and added support under the shoulders and hips.

6. Pillow top

A pillow top is an extra layer of cushioning on the top surface of the mattress. The extra padding can help relieve pressure on hips and shoulders as well as add extra contouring and support.

Both the Saatva Classic and the Saatva HD have a Euro pillow top covered in breathable organic cotton. A conventional pillow top is sewn onto the surface of the mattress, while a Euro pillow top has the padding underneath the top cover and flush with the mattress edges. This creates a cleaner look and ensures the pillow top won’t shift or lose its shape.

There is one difference in the pillow tops, though: The Saatva HD’s is hand-tufted. Hand-tufting is a method of securing the top layer to the layers underneath it. Hand-tufting keeps the layers in place and prevents shifting that can lead to sagging, a common mattress problem among heavier people.

7. Foundation

Once you’ve chosen a mattress, you’ll need to make sure you put it on the right surface, or else it won’t hold up as long or provide the support that it should.

The Saatva Classic is compatible with most foundations, box springs, platform beds, and adjustable bases. It can also be paired with our 4.75″ or 8.75″ foundation.

For ideal performance, the Saatva HD should be paired with our special HD foundation, which is stronger than a typical foundation or box spring. The HD foundation is available in 4.75″ and 8.75″. The Saatva HD can also be paired with a solid platform bed with vertical center support. Because of its durable construction, it’s not compatible with an adjustable base.

8. Warranty

A high-quality hybrid mattress should last for more than 10 years. We stand behind the quality of our products, so we offer a 15-year warranty for the Saatva Classic and a 20-year warranty for the Saatva HD. The Saatva HD’s warranty is slightly longer because it’s handcrafted with extra-durable materials especially for people weighing between 300 and 500 pounds.

Both warranties are non-prorated and work the same way. If your mattress is deemed defective during the first two years, we will replace it with a brand new mattress, free of any charges. After that, we will repair and recover the mattress for the cost of transportation ($99 each way).

9. Price

Saatva offers consistently low prices year-round. We’re able to do that by selling directly to you online, cutting out retail overhead. That said, a mattress made with premium materials, designed specifically for the needs of the heavier sleeper, does come at a higher cost than a traditional hybrid mattress. Here’s the breakdown on our pricing for comparison:

Saatva Classic:$799 for a twin, $899 for a twin XL, $1,099 for a full, $1,199 for a queen, $1,599 for a king or Cal king

Saatva HD:$1,499 for a twin, $1,599 for a twin XL, $1,899 for a full, $2,499 for a queen, $2,799 for a king or California king

American made

Saatva is proud to locally source materials and continue enriching the American economy.

MADE IN THE USA

Our American handcrafted mattresses have the best specifications offered by any company at the lowest price. Today, we have 19 American independent factories building our proprietary product and 145 fulfillment centers delivering. On average our mattresses travel less than 100 miles from our American factories to the customer’s home.

Because we save on storefront costs incurred such as rent, commissions, utility costs and so much more, we are able to put that saving into materials and manufacturing. When you buy the Saatva mattress you get the highest quality product andenrich our economy.

God Bless America!

Here are the facts.

Sourcing from the best is a business practice we and our suppliers stand behind.

Saatva mattresses are made in America.

Ultra-premium luxury mattresses require detailed work by hand, and our American craftsman do it as well as anyone in the world!

We are responsible for the movement of thousands of trucks weekly throughout every part of the country.

We are approached many times a year by foreign mattress manufactures to build Saatva products overseas. They guarantee the cost will be significantly less, and our profits will be much higher. We always say no!

We cannot account for every nut, bolt and steel component used in each of the 19 American factories manufacturing our proprietary product. We are proud to say that we source 100% of all of our eco-friendly foams in the United States. Over 85% of our other components are also sourced in the United States.

All of our American eco-friendly foams are stable before they are shipped to our factories. Many foams from overseas are not stable, are not subject to strict if any regulations, and are just shrink wrapped and shipped, even if moist. Our eco-friendly foams travel less and are odorless.

The Lineal™ Adjustable Base by Saatva is designed, engineered, and assembled in the US.

We follow all United States e-commerce tax laws.

Customer reviews

America’s #1 luxury mattress brand online with 9.7/10 on over 40,000 reviews.

Excellent Warranty

After making decision to relocate, I also made decision to dump my old mattress/box spring and buy a new one. Easier said than done—so much confusing information. I read reviews in an article in a leading consumer magazine, looked in stores, talked to friends, and ended up just as confused. Was online and.

No-Hassle Delivery

From beginning to end, I loved my experience working with Saatva, almost as much as we both love our new mattress. The website is easy to use. When questions arose, and I contacted customer service, everyone was courteous, efficient, and yet took the time necessary to answer my questions. The sales representatives asked.

Superior Customer Service

I’ve purchased mattresses two times and each time the Saatva representative was courteous, very knowledgeable and helpful, and quickly found what I was looking for. It was easy to navigate the site and the representative made it easier. The company’s policies and procedures are very customer friendly. And, the mattresses are wonderful.

Quality Product, Great Price

I had the best customer service experience with Saatva. Everyone was so helpful, professional and knowledgeable. I needed my bed before I moved into my new apartment, and Saatva so made that happen. Quality product at great price backed by quality people. Doesn’t get better than that.

Worth Every Penny

The only better than our Saatva mattress is their customer service! Best mattress we have ever owned. Worth every penny! Our only regret is that we didn’t buy one of these years ago. The customer service is awesome. They kept in touch with us before, during and after delivery.

Perfect Mattress Setup

Love the mattress we bought! Price was much lower than what we would have paid locally, and the service was good. Quick delivery and set up perfect.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I try your mattresses in a store?

Saatva began with the idea of selling high-quality luxury mattresses online. It’s how we keep the middleman out and overhead low, which means we can keep our prices affordable for you every day. Besides, we believe the best way to know if a mattress is right for you is by trying it in the comfort of your own home. That’s why we give you the opportunity to sleep on your Saatva HD at home for 120 nights, with a no-hassle return policy.

Recently we opened the Saatva.com Viewing Room in New York City, where you can experience our mattresses and other bedding products before starting your 120-night home trial.

    What is your return policy?

If you aren’t completely happy with your Saatva HD mattress during your 120-night trial, we will come get the mattress and refund your money. You will be responsible only for a $99 transportation cost to cover our cost of labor and gas for the mattress pickup. That’s it. We never resell returned mattresses. Instead, we donate them to veterans’ shelters or offer them to employees and associates across our network of more than 150 delivery centers.

Can I expedite delivery of my mattress?

Saatva mattresses are manufactured to order and delivered by hand. That means they are freshly made and do not sit in storage.

Occasionally, we can shorten the delivery time when we have a change or cancellation from another order. This allows us to redirect a freshly made, and sealed, mattress to you faster. We’d love to hear from you and help in any way if you need your mattress faster. Our friendly sleep guides are here 24/7 at 1-877-672-2882 to assist you.

When do your mattresses go on sale?

At Saatva, we don’t have sales. Selling direct to you means we can offer our premium products for a fraction of what they would cost in a retail store. We pledged from day one to always be transparent in our pricing, so our customers don’t have to scramble for gimmicky sales that are standard fare in mattress stores. Instead, we offer Saatva mattresses for the same low price every day of the year. We do offer a discount of $100 to our customers who are active duty or military veterans, first responders, teachers, and nurses.

    Are your representatives on commission?

No. It’s part of our pledge to be honest and transparent about what you’re buying. Saatva is committed to giving you honest guidance, even if it means directing you to another mattress brand that’s a better fit for you. In a retail store environment, a commissioned employee makes more money when they sell you a particular brand, so you may get pressured into a choice that’s not right for you. That’s just not the Saatva way.

    Saatva mattress reviews on comfort:

    • “Most comfortable mattress we’ve ever slept on, even ones that were much more expensive! Just firm enough without being too hard, and the extra support mid-back is a little bit of heaven. Ordering was easy, follow up was appropriate, and delivery was on time. They actually did wear gloves when delivering. We would definitely recommend this product to anyone.”
    • “My mattress came in a timely manner as promised, was set up by the professionals they contract with here in my city, and I could not be happier. It is everything I’d hoped it would be and better. I cannot wait to sleep on it every evening. Believe me, this mattress is as good or better than they advertise it to be. The comfort is phenomenal.” – N Malenke

Saatva mattress reviews from customers with back and joint pain:

    • “Considering that Merlin’s -my wife- shoulders suddenly ceased numbing the very first night she slept on it and my lower back -L5 fusion- discontinued aching every single morning since it arrived, one cannot give Saatva any less than the full star general line up of five. It just would not be fair.”
    • “We got our mattress a few days ago. My wife has been suffering from lumbar back issues for over a year. We have tried IComfort, Stearns and Foster, and Beauty Rest mattresses. We even slept on an inflatable Coleman Mattress with a futon pad. Nothing worked. The Saatva Luxury Firm mattress has made a remarkable difference in my wife’s back pain. I sleep like a rock on it too! Wonderful company, speedy delivery, and great price. Have already recommended it to multiple friends. Thanks for producing a quality product, in America for a great price point. Thanks for the peace you have given to us.”
    • “For the first time in years I could sleep on my stomach and sides without pain, numbness and tingling! I forgot to mention that I am loaded with atthritis and within the last 9 years have had to have 2 back surgeries, 2 knee replacements and a right hip replacement. Bottom line…I sleep like a baby on this mattress and I am so happy I decided to take a “leap of faith” and trust the company and their incredible customer service and return policy. Thanks Saatva!” – Joyce S.

Saatva mattress reviews on sleep quality:

    • “This was the best decision ever. I received it sooner than expected and we love it. No more aches and pains when we get up in the morning.
According to a tracking device I recently received, I was getting an average of 3 – 4 hours of sleep every night. Now with the new Saatva, I am getting 6 – 7 hours of sleep per night.” – Carla R.
    • “We have had nearly a week on our new bed and noticed how we barely moved during the night. No need to toss and turn anymore from an uncomfortable bed. We would highly recommend these beds and would purchase another one when the time comes. Note that this bed as we ordered it is quite high which we love. It needs a 108″ x 96″ quilt to cover all sides at the bed skirt line.” – MA Nagel

    Product Information

Let’s take a deeper look into what makes the Saatva mattress a great luxury mattress. We’ll look into each layer of the bed and give you all the details you need to know before purchasing.

    What Makes Saatva Different?

The Saatva mattress is handcrafted in independent, American factories. The mattress is made with quality materials such as organic cotton, a plant-based natural thistle, eco-friendly foams using at least 30% soy or corn oil, and recycled steel rod coil units.

While the mattress isn’t 100% organic, it is free of any harmful chemicals. In fact, you will find natural tickings on the cover of the Saatva mattress from the organic cotton material used to make it – Saatva does not use any chemical processing to rid of these markings.

Something else that’s unique about Saatva is its dual support coil system. As you can see in our “look inside” below, Saatva uses two layers of coils in the construction of the mattress – making it more durable and able to support more body weight over time.

From a convenience standpoint, Saatva is one of the few mattress companies to offer free white glove delivery and mattress removal. While other brands offer these services, they often come at an additional cost to the customer.
