How To Make A Mattress Firmer

A few ways you can make a soft mattress firmer and more supportive.

Categories:
Last Updated:

Before we begin, let’s first firm a few things up (get it). All jokes aside, this post is designed to be a helpful guide for you to firm up your existing mattress. Let’s get to it.

Why You Might Need A Firm Bed

There are many reasons why you might need a firmer mattress. Your bed may have simply arrived a little softer than expected. Also, some mattresses tend to get softer with time, as you break them in. If you have a back injury or some back pain, your doctor may have recommended that you sleep on a firmer surface. Or maybe your partner moved in, and they need a firmer mattress. Whatever it is, we’re here to help.

Let’s first go over some reasons why having a firmer versus a softer bed can be so important, and then we’ll talk about some options for making your mattress firmer.

Why Firmness Level Is Important

When we talk about firmness here at the Slumber Yard, know that we are doing so in a relative manner, as firmness is a term that is relative to weight. Basically, the less you weigh, the more you lay on top of a mattress, sofa, or any other surface for that matter. When you’re laying more on top of a surface, instead of sinking down in it, it will feel firmer to you. Because of this, petite people might find more mattresses feel firm to them.

On the opposite end of spectrum, the more you weigh, the more you sink into a mattress or other surface. Because you’re sinking down into the material more, the surface will feel softer. Heavier people might find more mattresses feel softer to them, and may have a more difficult time finding a firm enough bed. In some cases, though, we have found that heavier people will sink right through the comfort layers of a mattress and will settle more on the poly foam or coil base layers, which actually make the bed feel firmer. This isn’t good for your spine though.

Your sleeper type is also important when considering the firmness level you need in your mattress. Side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress that will accommodate their curves, instead of fighting against them and possibly limiting blood flow. Back and stomach sleepers will need a firmer mattress that will keep their spine in proper alignment while they sleep. Back and stomach sleepers shouldn’t have their hips or shoulders sinking into the bed too much, as this will cause the spine to be in an arched position, which can lead to back aches or other problems.

Plank is a firm mattress

Having a firm bed can also be better for your health. Remember, you sleep on your mattress for (hopefully) eight hours every night. Over the course of a lifetime, that’s a third of your life spent sleeping. Keeping the spine in proper alignment, whether sleeping on your back or on your side, is very important for the overall health of your body. This study even explores the concept that firmer bedding can reduce back pain, improve sleep quality, and decrease overall stress.

Keep all this in mind as we explore the different options you have when it comes to making your mattress more firm.

Options To Increase Firmness

Trial period. Many online mattress brands have trial periods, so that you can really get to know your new mattress before you commit. Most companies offer a 100-night trial period, but others, like Nectar for example, have year-long trial periods. Check to see if your mattress is still within its trial period, because you might be able to return the bed for a full refund, and most of the time the company will come remove the mattress for you, also free of charge. You could also try contacting the company and see if they can help you. Novosbed will even send you a Comfort+ Kit, which is a free foam topper, if you feel the firmness of the bed isn’t quite right for you.

Try placing your mattress on the floor. If that makes it feel firm enough for you, you could either go for a cool college kid vibe and leave it there, or you can try slipping some plywood boards between your mattress and the bed frame. This will add some extra firm support and possibly harden your mattress.

Check your box spring.Box springs can wear out with prolonged use. When they lose their strength, they provide less support for your mattress than they should, which in turn may make your mattress feel softer. Replacing a box spring is usually much less pricey than replacing a mattress, and can help to harden up your bed.

Replace the worn out layers.More and more companies are manufacturing their mattresses with different layers of material, so it’s easy to switch out the ones that are more damaged. This is also a more affordable way to make your mattress firmer. Just make sure your mattress has a removable mattress cover and you’re not

Dampness.Your bed can become soft from absorbing moisture from the air. This is common in humid areas or if you live close to the beach. If you think this might be the problem, just take your bed and lay it in the sun, and let it dry out for the day. This should not only firm up your mattress, but the sun should also kill off any bacteria, mold, and germs that may have occurred from the dampness. If you’re super worried about a contaminated mattress, you can also pay for a professional cleaning, but make sure to try this first.

Mattress topper.I know, you’re probably thinking, aren’t mattress toppers suppose to make beds softer? But there are tons of great mattress toppers you can find on Amazon that will make your bed firmer. We suggest a dense memory foam or a latex one. Latex is a natural foam material made from the sap of rubber trees, and its known to be pretty firm and responsive. They have synthetic latex options, as well, which are usually cheaper. Toppers are usually around 2”-6” thick, so they can make your bed decently thicker, or just a little bit thicker, if that’s what you prefer. Also, mattress pads tend to be thinner and make mattresses softer, so look specifically for a topper.

Consider your room temperature. Some materials, like 100% memory foam or airy polyurethane foam, can be temperature sensitive. If you leave them in a cold room they We’ve even heard of pure memory foam freezing solid if left in a super cold climate! Try adjusting your thermostat in your bedroom to a lower temperature, or even leave a window open and get the fan going and see if that firms up your bed a bit. Likewise, a warmer temperature might make your bed softer.

Rotate or flip your mattress.Sometimes simply rotating your bed so that the heavier parts of your body lay in different spots can help. We always recommend that, no matter what kind of mattress you have, you rotate it seasonally to help prevent against sagging or impressions. If your bed is two-sided, you can also try flipping it to make it firmer. Just double check first that it’s a flippable mattress. Some beds, like the Plank for example, come with two different firmness levels on each side. If there aren’t different firmness levels, the unused side will still often be firmer.

Nest Flip is a double-sided mattress

If all else fails, get a new mattress. As we explained above, the firmness of your bed is very important for your spinal health, and to prevent against body aches and stiffness. This is especially true for strict back or stomach sleepers. Also, having a worn out bed that’s been around too long is just not great for your body. If you’ve had your bed for over 10 years and it’s much softer than when you first got it, it might be time for a new mattress anyway. You can check out our list of Best Firm Beds or Best Beds for Back Sleepers if you want some help figuring out which bed might be best for you.

Best Firm Mattress Reviews

Our review of the top rated firm mattresses online for the money.

Many of the hard mattresses on the market today are quite comfortable, and don’t sacrifice quality. On this list are the best rated firm mattresses that range from medium firm to extra firm and also vary in terms of materials. As a heads up, whenever we discuss prices, we are referencing the queen size mattresses, although we’re often factoring in the king mattress as well.

Overview Of Best Rated Beds

So you’re looking for a firm mattress, whether it’s a queen or king size. Chances are you’re a back or stomach sleeper, or you’re a heavier individual, or maybe you have a health concern that calls for a hard bed to sleep on. Back in the day, a firm mattress meant that you had to have a spring mattress on top of a foundation. Think of your grandma’s old mattress in her guest bedroom, or your dorm bed.

But now, with all of the amazing new mattress technology, including Hyper-Elastic Polymer, you have a wide range of options to choose from, meaningyou no longer have to sacrifice comfort for a firm mattress. With that in mind, it’s time to take a quick look at our list of the best rated firm mattresses for the money:

  • Firm Coil Mattress— Saatva Classic
  • Best Medium Firm Mattress— Leesa Hybrid
  • Best Extra Firm Mattress— Plank
  • Natural Materials— Awara
  • Semi Firm Foam Mattress— GhostBed Luxe

You might notice some consistencies in this post, such as all of these beds will rank as a medium firm to ultra firm on our firmness scale, all are going to be best mainly for people that favor their stomach and/or back, and all should be accommodating for heavier folks.

None of these beds will be the best options for side sleepers, as they need a soft, pressure relieving surface to accommodate for their hips and shoulders when on their side. In this post, we’ll explain what are the best firm or hard mattresses, and why.

What Is The Best Firm Mattress?

Changing mattresses can be difficult, especially when switching from a soft mattress to a firm one. Your body might need anywhere from several days to a full month to adjust to a new sleeping surface. But many times, these changes will be better for you in the long run. Having a sagging or worn out mattress can lead to issues with the spine, breathing, and blood flow. They can also just negatively affect your night’s sleep, which can cause issues with how you perform during the day.

The process of finding a new mattress in general can sometimes seem daunting. Your bed should be an investment in your life for the next 10-15 years, a happy place, and where you spend about a third of your life sleeping.

Mattresses are also a costly item, being anywhere from $200 to over $3,000 (depending on size and quality). We wish we could tell you plain and simple what the best mattress is for the money, but there are too many factors involved. As just one example, if you want a medium firm mattress there are about 20 products to consider, which are totally different from if you want an extra firm mattress. Making sure you do your research on your specific needs regarding how you like to sleep is very important before taking the leap and purchasing a new mattress. Not only that, but if you get a king size mattress rather than a queen, obviously there will be a major impact on price.

Leesa’s coil bed is one of the most comfortable medium firm mattresses sold online. The bed combines 6" pocketed coils and various foams. It’s supportive, firm, and completely worth your time to learn more about. It’s a pretty darn good bed for the money.
Plank is a two sided firm mattress that’s price-conscious and offers a new take on an online mattress. It’s also from one of the largest brands out there, Brooklyn Bedding. If you’re looking for an extra firm mattress, Plank is just that (at least on one side) and should be plenty comfortable.

Extra Firm vs Medium Firm

When it comes to a new firm mattress, there’s a gigantic difference between extra firm and medium firm. In our reviews we generally consider extra firm mattresses to feel like a thin layer of foam on a board. I know that doesn’t sound appealing, but it represents the lack of pressure relief that an ultra firm mattress will offer. There are plenty of extra firm beds out there, but you will have a shorter list than if you were looking for a medium firm mattress, which is perhaps the most popular comfort level.

A medium firm mattress offers a good amount of pressure relief, but not so much that you’re “melting” into the bed. You should still feel the support, but immediately recognize that this is semi firm, not ultra firm. The majority of brands we’ve published reviews for offer a medium firm bed, or something just a little softer. You’d rather start too firm than too soft with your new bed, especially if you’re wondering what is the best firm mattress for your particular situation.

The Most Comfortable Mattress Is A Subjective Term

We mention this in almost all of our mattress reviews. We want to bring it up here to remind you that comfort—and even firmness—is a relative term. If you’re looking for an extra firm mattress, your idea of comfort will be different from most people because most people select a bed in the medium to medium firm range.

Additionally, your weight affects your interpretation of feel and firmness. The more pressure you’re applying to the bed, the softer it will feel. Thus, if you have a semi firm mattress, to you it might feel like a soft bed. Likewise if you’re petite, a semi firm bed might feel ultra firm. With that in mind, finding the most comfortable firm mattress might not be as straightforward as you had hoped since our opinion is most certainly different from yours. We might think one mattress is comfortable and you disagree. Mattress shopping is subjective, there’s no way around it.

Saatva Mattress

BEST FOR:

  • Those who want a firm mattress with a Euro top cover
  • All body types
  • People that want a luxury bed that sells for around $1,000-$1,200 (great value for the money)
  • If you want a choice between an extra firm and medium firm mattress
  • People that want a bed from one of the top rated online brands

Saatva is our “Firm Coil Mattress” choice for this list. Saatva is a luxury mattress brand that doesn’t believe their beds should be put in boxes, so they offerfree white-glove delivery.

This means a delivery company will hand deliver your new mattress to you (with or without the white gloves), set it up exactly how and where you want it, and then remove your old mattress— all complimentary. The downside to this is that they charge $99 for returns, should you change your mind about the bed. We doubt you’ll do that, but we mention it so you’re aware.

Two layers of coils and an organic cotton cover

Saatva comes in multiple firmness levels, and for this post we specifically like the two firmer options. We rated them as a medium firm to firm on our firmness scale. This bed is built with a dual coil system of individually wrapped coils and a steel coil base, and then has a firm Euro top that’s very responsive, so you will probably never feel “stuck in the mud.” This bed has some bounce to it (great for pillow fights), and an organic cotton cover that we think smells like burlap (in a good way!).

It’s oh so nice and sells for just over $1,000

The springs in this mattress make it accommodating for all body types, but we recommend most people, including combination sleepers, look into the medium firm model. They also have the firm model, but remember, that’s an extra firm mattress.

Leesa Hybrid

BEST FOR:

  • All body types (Sapira is thick/supportive)
  • Those who like a neutral foam feel (and want a supportive bed)
  • Anyone that wants a premium mattress with a we-cut-out-the-middle-man price
  • Anyone that needs a semi firm mattress
  • If you want one of the best rated mattresses online

This bed has afirmer neutral foam feel with a textured cover mixed in. It’s actually one of the more unique beds that we’ve tested to date.

In total, Leesa is about 11″ thick comprised of pocketed coils and a few different foams, plus a really nice, silky cover. Because the bed is about a medium firm, you won’t necessarily feel all of the layers, but rather you will just noticed that it has comfortable foam feel. This is the type of bed you want to nestle intoand never get out of.

Inside Leesa’s coil mattress

Because it is such a thick and luxurious bed, it will be a pretty good option for heavy people or anyone that just wants a supportive bed. In general, you will remain on top of the mattress, which is why from the get-go we say it’s a little better for people that spend most of the night on their belly/back. Of course, it will soften with use, but on day one it will be quite firm.

Leesa’s coil mattress belongs in a five-star hotel

Perhapsthe best part about Leesa is just how accomodating it is, especially if you get the king size mattress. If you’re ok with the firmness level, we imagine the feel of the bed will be no issue. It’s the type of bed that nearly everyone agrees is comfy even if it’s too firm, or they had original wanted something different.

Plank

BEST FOR:

  • Anyone that wants a choice between ultra firm and semi firm
  • If you want an inexpensive firm foam mattress (after-discount it’s under $850 for a queen size)
  • Anyone that wants the option to flip their mattress

Plank is a new mattress concept in that it’s double sided, and both sides are firm. They have a medium firm side and an extra firm side. You can see our firmness ratings for each side in the graphic below.

As you can see, we rated their “Soft” side as a semi firm and the “Firm” side as an extra firm. Despite the firmness level, however, we recommend medium and petite individuals try out Plank. If you’re heavy (i.e. well over 250 lb) there are other options to look into such as the Big Fig mattress.

Brooklyn Bedding intentionally created Plank to have a minimalist design

This bed isgreat for back and stomach sleepers, though, combination sleepers will probably be fine on the softer side. At the end of the day, though, we put Plank on the list because of the firmer side for people that want an ultra firm mattress. If you need a comfortable firm mattress, Plank gives you two chances to get it right.

Awara is an inexpensive hybrid mattress that ships directly to you. It’s also fairly new to the mattress scene and is backed by Resident Home, the company that brought you Nectar and DreamCloud. This coil mattress is constructed withpocketed coils and a foam top layer. Some Slumber Yard team members have compared the feeling of this bed to that of laying on an extra-thick bed of grass, because there’s a thin layer of cushion before the firm ground, or in this case, individually wrapped coils.

Our overall firmness rating for the bed is closer to a medium firm, which means it will be able to accomodate all sleeping positions, although some people that sleep on their side might consider it too firm. Still, we find it to be supremely comfortable, especially when you think about the fact that it’s a wallet-friendly mattress.

If you take one look at the price tag, you’ll know why we call it a great value

Awara has certain natural materials, comes with free shipping and returns, and has a “forever” warranty. The MSRP is under $1,500 for the queen size mattress. And that is before you apply any discounts. Most of the time, you can expect the queen size to cost you about $1,200. If you go to AwaraSleep.com you can see current deals and offers.

The GhostBed Luxe is for those of you who tend to sleep hot, and are looking to cool down. This bed uses gel-infused foam with a mix of a Japanese cooling fiber, giving you a “GhostHug” feel (a cold foam hug). Heavier folks will probably get that “GhostHug,” but average sized individuals might not because the lighter you are, the less you sink into the material.

Although this is technically a firm bed, it’s actually more of a semi firm bed. We think it’s very comfortable and would be a nice pick for a wide range of sleepers.

The GhostBed Luxe is cool-to-the-touch

The GhostBed Luxe is going to be accommodating for heavy folks because it’s a thicker bed made with quality materials, and of course the firmness helps it to manage heavier people. Even so, we prefer you look into a coil bed first, but GhostBed Luxe is one of the better options for overweight and large individuals.

Here at the Slumber Yard, we literally have a room piled full of queen mattresses that we test out on a daily basis. We have a complete spectrum of beds, ranging from college student prices to almost over-the-top luxurious—and some that are just fantastic mattresses for the money. We have published reviews of poly foam beds, memory foam mattresses, latex mattresses, beds with coils, and more. We think about things like whether or not there’s enough edge support on the queen mattress for couples. Will this bed sleep hot, or cool? Is this too much for my child’s twin mattress? We take all the guesswork out of the equation for you, because we’re basically mattress nerds. So, if you’re searching for ultra firm or semi firm, we’ve got you covered.

How We Selected Firm Mattresses

We have a firmness scale here at the Slumber Yard to help categorize the firmness level of every mattress we test. It makes things easier for both us and you. Our scale ranges from soft, to medium soft, to medium, to medium firm, and finally, ultra firm. All of the beds on this list have been rated either a medium firm or extra firm. Please keep in mind that firmness is a term dependent on body weight, which we explain later in this post, but we have a wide range of Slumber Yard team members in all different body shapes and sizes, which helps us find a median place on the firmness scale for each bed. If you’re looking for the most supportive beds out there, check out our list of the Best Mattresses for Heavy & Obese People.

Who Is A Firm Mattress Best For?

There are usually some specific qualifications for people who tend to seek out a hard mattress. First is that you’re possibly a back or stomach sleeper. These sleepers need a firm surface that won’t let their head, hips, or shoulders sink into the mattress too much, which would cause the spine to curve or arch. You need to keep their spine in neutral alignment, which can prevent back pain and waking up with soreness. We notice that back sleepers typically like a firmer surface, perhaps even an extra firm one, and then belly sleepers might need a little bit more cushion such as a medium firm mattress.

Another reason you may want a firm bed is that you might be a heavier individual. Firmness is a relative term to weight, which can make things tricky if you’re either much heavier (250 lb+) or much lighter (100 lb-). Heavier individuals tend to sink into a mattress deeper, because they’re displacing more weight into it. This makes the bed feel softer for them. If you’re a heavier individual who sleeps main on their back or belly, or might just prefer an ultra firm bed in general, it can be more difficult for you to find what you’re looking for. Contrast that with someone that weighs under 150 lbs who will think even a semi firm mattress is extra firm.

The last reason for wanting a harder sleep surface is that you might have a medical condition that requires a firm mattress every night. Whether that has to do with spinal issues, breathing issues, or something else, always consult with your doctor before making a final decision and purchasing a new bed.

How To Clean Your New Mattress

Since the covers on the mattresses listed above aren’t machine washable, you’ll have to take a few extra steps to get them clean when you or your loved one makes an accidental spill. It’s pretty simple — all you need is a mild detergent, warm water, and a towel. Just make sure you don’t use too much water because it may cause damage to the foam in your mattress, which is obviously the last thing you want when you’re just trying to clean up some orange juice from breakfast-in-bed.

Many online mattresses have removable covers, but you need to be careful because that doesn’t mean it’s machine washable. If you do, you’re at risk of shrinking the cover to the point where it won’t fit over your mattress anymore. If your desire for a bed with a removable cover outweighs your yearning for one of our top rated firm mattresses, check out our review on a Helix Mattress and Yogabed.

The Best Medium Firm Mattress

We made one selection for the best medium firm mattress, but the truth is that there are a dozen or so really fantastic beds in that firmness range. And for the record, we consider a medium firm and semi firm mattress to be the same thing.

Now, why are they so popular? Well, in many cases people just prefer a slightly firmer profile, but in other cases, it’s about starting firmer because all beds. In fact, if you want a bed to be just firmer than a “medium” you probably want to start a little up the firmness chain. Another reason would be that a medium firm mattress is really accommodating because in many cases you can sleep in any and all sleeping positions. That means, if you’re spending a lot of time on your side at night, often times a semi firm mattress will be plenty accommodating—and the same would be generally true for people laying on their stomach or back, too.

There are countless other reasons why you might like this style of bed, but let’s not waste anymore time—let’s take a look at the best medium firm mattresses, according to our editors:

It’s not fair to say that above is an exhaustive list. The truth is that there are dozens of medium firm mattresses that we like a lot, and you probably will too. We’d say, you can start with our list and expand from there. Also, we left out plenty of beds that come in multiple firmness options, including Brooklyn Signature, Amerisleep, Helix Sleep, Nest Alexander, and plenty of others. You may want to look through our Mattress Reviews page to see more beds.

What About The Extra Firm Mattress?

We’ve covered the semi firm mattress, but what about the ultra firm one? After all, there’s a huge number of people that outright prefer an extra firm mattress—whether because of a health condition or just for comfort. An ultra firm mattress is one that doesn’t have a whole lot of give. The idea is that you feel as if you’re laying on a thick bed of grass. You get a little cushioning, but not much. With all of that in mind, let’s take a look a list of best extra firm mattresses:

Clearly, we could make our list much longer, but that’s a fantastic place to start. Our selection, often times, is Plank because it offers two different firmness options. There’s the medium firm and the ultra firm, so it’s kind of like the best of both worlds. If you’re wondering what is the best firm mattress, we do think plenty of people will like that bed, but of course there are countless other great options.

More About Online Mattresses

Most of the mattress reviews we’ve published include a “boxed mattress,” and will show up outside your front door inside packaging that’s about 4 ft tall (or a bag, but it’s still the same concept). At first glance, you might wonder if you accidentally purchased a mattress topper. We assure you, whatever size mattress you ordered is going to be in there. If you’re still a little skeptical, you’ll warm up to the idea once you don’t have to struggle carrying a mattress as tall as you are through your front door all the way to your bedroom.

How do they compress a 6 ft long queen mattress to only ⅔ the size? The simple answer is they’re rolled up and compressed, so they take up a lot less space than they normally would inside your bedroom. Once you remove the packaging from your new mattress, you’ll want to lay it on a flat surface and wait about 24-48 hours so you can allow time for it to decompress and off-gas. The entire online mattress concept just offers a wonderful product for the money.

How Did The Slumber Yard Get These Mattresses?

Basically all of our mattresses are sent to us straight from the company so we can properly review, and compare the beds to other brands. Even though that’s the case, we’ll always keep our reviews unbiased and honest. Other than some other review sites out there, we aren’t owned by a company and we don’t accept bribes. If we say we like a mattress or product, you can rest assured that the members on our team with a range of body types and sleeper types gave it our stamp-of-approval.

Returns and Trial Periods

When you purchase from an online mattress company, you get to take advantage of their generous return and trial period policies. All of the brands listed above offer free shipping and will give you a risk-free trial period to make sure you find the most comfortable firm mattress for you.

Some brands give you an average of 100 days to test it out, while other companies like DreamCloud will give you an entire year. If you decide you don’t like your mattress within the trial period, you’ll be able to return your mattress for 100% of your money back. Most companies just urge you to wait at least 30 days before you make a final decision, so you can allow your body to become acclimated to your new mattress.

This is another thing online mattress companies has over many Brick-and-mortar retailers. The brands who are strictly in-store usually require you to exchange your mattress, rather than get your money back with a return. We want to note there are a few states who charge a small mattress recycling fee to safely get rid of your mattress, so double check to see if your state is one of them.

The Best Size Of Firm Bed

In general, the size of bed you get has little to no impact on its firmness rating or overall comfort of the bed. The one thing that we want to point out is that if you have two people on the same bed, they will have different estimates in terms of how firm it is. That said, the best way to make two people happy on the bed is to have them get a firm king mattress. Why is that so? Well, they will have more room on the king size mattress so they don’t bump into each other all the time. Getting comfortable for one person can be difficult—especially on an older mattress—and when you add a second person, the equation gets quite a bit more difficult to solve. We advise “sizing up” and getting a king mattress. Now, obviously, you’d get a firm king mattress since you’re interested in the beds in the 6-10 range in terms of hardness.

Having said all of that, we realize that not everyone can afford a king mattress. In that case, for one person or two, we suggest the queen size mattress, which measures in at 60″ x 80″ typically. A firm queen mattress will generally have fairly strong edge support, so if you are sleeping with a partner, that’s an advantage over certain other beds. But how much larger is the king mattress than the queen? It’s about 25% larger in terms of overall space, which is why we say couples should get a king if they can afford it.

We were looking for another Tempur-Pedic Mattress after our move to AZ. We Went to the Mattress Firm knowing what we wanted and we ended up getting the Best & Easiest Service ever. Our sales associate was Tamara **. She was so helpful listening as I explained about my bad back she knew immediately which mattress We needed to try, not only did we get the Tempur-Luxbreeze mattress but We ended up getting a great deal, also received our pillows & mattress in the package for nothing. I would definitely recommend going to this mattress firm and asking for Tamara. She will set you up with a wonderful mattress. Can’t wait to start getting a great night sleep again on our new mattress!! Thanks Mattress firm for making our purchase an easy one.. We walked out the door feeling very confident that we purchased the right mattress for us. Thanks Tamara for making us very happy with our purchase!!

I wanted to reach out to Mattress Firm in Aventura, Florida, who gave an elderly widow who was having a hard time making ends meet due to her being on a fixed income. Mattress firm gave her a brand new bed for free to help her just before the Christmas holiday, I think that was a very honorable thing to do for her, thanks to the management and staff, have a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

When we bought two different Brand name mattresses in different firmness from Mattress Firm, we were given a great deal and 120 days to decide to keep. After only a couple weeks we knew we were not happy with our choice, her’s was too firm and mine was way too soft, even though we picked out the softest and firmest Mattress Firm had to offer. The manager was our salesman from the beginning and Super helpful throughout the process and did everything he could to make us happy but after we tried many other mattresses and nothing was satisfactory he refunded In Full every penny. All of the mattresses Mattress Firm sold were of the Highest quality but just Not Firm enough for me OR soft enough for her. – All in all I give Mattress Firm a Top Recommendation.

Went in as this company sells purple and wanted to experience it. Had only planned on upgrading the mattress and never experience an adjustable frame. We felt so well taken care of we did not even go look at other brands or stores. From the moment we walked in, Levon, the store manager of the Ypsilanti MI store, greeted us and made us feel welcome and made sure we experienced the range of not only purple but options for frames. Since current bed is 20 years old and standard frame, much as changed. There is a lot of tech now in sleep hardware and the experience is like buying a car with all the selection + financing options and sales. In our case we did not have the high pressure that would be associated with car purchases sometimes.

Our case was unique in that we went through some adjustments in model/s decided before delivery. We deciding to upgrade bed frame, changing some things etc. Levon was there all the way and excellent communication and assistant as changing terms and items around requires good knowledge and patients. He obviously knows his stuff. Since I live halfway between Ann Arbor area and Toledo, did go in to a mattress firm in OH to check on the mattress I would be getting, for one last feel even though Mattress Firm has an in-home 120 days trial. The employee in that store knew of Levon and talked well of him as a great person to be working with. Knowing he is even respected by fellow workers in others stores says something. Delivery was on time and professional. Highly recommend this store and working with the manager there.

I have a fused cervical spine and chronic lower back pain, I have literally spent close to ten thousand dollars on mattresses over the past several years just trying to get a good comfortable nights sleep! I have wasted so much money on high end mattresses and yet after 4-6 months the mattresses seems to just get less comfortable and then end up causing me even more sleep robbing pain..

Most places I’ve been to in search of quality mattresses, (And I’ve been to quite a few!) are just full of paycheck hungry salesmen. Dennis ** at the Riverdale Mattress Firm store was more than just a salesman, He was someone who literally understood my issues as he has very similar issues himself. he not only shared his knowledge with me but also took the time to educate me on other options and gave me a few more tools to work with. He also helped me out by discounting a floor model for me as he sympathized the fact that I have bought so many high dollar mattresses over the past several years. Great guy! more than just a hungry salesman, he was kind and knowledgeable, very helpful in my opinion. I had a very positive experience at the Mattress Firm store in Riverdale. I just thought I would share this with anyone whom it may be relevant to.

Our salesperson was fantastic. Not so much the company. Warranty situation. 10 yr only lasted 3+. Only able to purchase full price with sale price credit. Had to downgrade quality to avoid years more of payment. They should offer equal quality mattress in exchange.

Moral of the story: Brick and mortar mattress stores are becoming obsolete and charge a hefty markup. Do your research and purchase a quality mattress online. It will save you time and money and online sellers are much more flexible with returns. I have no issues with Mattress firm employees. Their policies are what created the headaches.

This was my wife and my first time buying a mattress. We thought that going to a brick and mortar store to test out the mattresses ourselves would be our best bet. Unfortunately, we got tangled up with all the nonsense that is embedded in the traditional mattress buying process. We started at Mattress Firm and were shown the Beautyrest hybrid which we liked. The sales manager, Craig, gave us what he said was a "good deal", but we would have to pay and sign for it that day as he "may not be in the same store tomorrow" (he turned out to be in the same store for weeks to come). I found out later that day that the price he gave us for the mattress was the exact same price as their website.

We had the option of canceling the order at no cost anytime before the delivery one week out. We ended up signing the papers with the intent on shopping around some more. We then went to Ashley Homestore and found a Sterns and Fosters mattress that we liked even better. I called Craig in the store and he said that he would beat their quoted price for the same mattress. We went back to Mattress Firm to find that they did not carry the same Sterns and Fosters model. I found out manufacturers sell the same mattress to different sellers just with different names to confuse buyers even more. Craig then had us try out a few comparable mattresses and we then settled on a Serta iSeries 300 hybrid (plush). We also were purchasing an adjustable frame as my wife has sleep apnea, so having the adjustable frame improves sleep quality. Craig threw in free setup of the adjustable frame and a purple pillow, so kudos to him on that.

The mattress arrived a week later and they set it up no problems. After they left, I discovered that a few of the button tufts were unseamed (see photos). I called Craig to notify him of this issue and possibly get a credit on the account as I was delivered a mattress with a defect. He said that the tufting was not something that was under warranty and that he would have to contact his manager in order to see what he could do. After several calls throughout the week there was no traction made. Sleeping on the mattress was comfy for the first couple of nights, but after the mattress broke in we began to have some reoccurring back pain.

After doing some research, having a firmer mattress is better for back support, especially with an adjustable frame. Why would we be sold a plush mattress when they were aware it was going to be on an adjustable frame and my wife had complained of back pain issues? Clearly we were not given the proper insight into this before making the purchase. After doing some more research on alternative mattresses, I stumbled upon the Avocado Green mattress. It had the highest Consumer Reports rating this past year and had very high scores for back sleepers. I also found out that the price of the Avocado was less than what we paid for the Serta.

I called Craig yet again to figure out our options for returning the mattress. He informed us that we could not return the mattress until 21 days after we received the mattress. He also said there would be a 20% restocking fee for the return and that we would have to pay back the discount he gave us on the adjustable frame in order to return it. I told him this was unacceptable and that I would be willing to pay a 10% restocking fee and not pay the difference on the adjustable frame (we ended up getting this). We ordered the Avocado mattress and were very well informed of our options by their customer support team. We’ve been sleeping on the Avocado for a couple of weeks and could not be happier. I wouldn’t recommend anyone go through Mattress Firm to purchase a mattress. Their prices are far too marked up and there are plenty of great mattresses available online at a lower price.

Turmoil again at Mattress Firm? CEO suddenly exits six months after bankruptcy

Two mattress company CEOs are suddenly jobless in another shakeup for an industry mired in upheaval, raising questions about the future of a sales partnership between their companies.

Mattress Firm CEO and Executive Chairman Steve Stagner resigned abruptly this week about six months after the company plunged into bankruptcy and closed about 640 stores following an expansion binge.

One analyst said Stagner’s exit was likely necessary to open the door for Mattress Firm to patch up a previously acrimonious relationship with one-time supplier Tempur Sealy International.

Mattress Firm, the nation’s largest mattress retailer, did not name a permanent replacement or an interim leader, saying that its board would "work closely with the senior management team to execute a strategy for operational growth" while it searches for a new CEO.

Stagner was on his second stint as CEO of Mattress Firm, having first served in that post from 2010 through 2016 and then taking over again in March 2018.

"Through his leadership, Mattress Firm successfully emerged from bankruptcy in the fall of 2018, and is now positioned to pursue a disciplined and healthy retail strategy," Mattress Firm spokesperson Sunni Goodman said in an email. "Knowing Mattress Firm is in a good place, Steve felt this was the right time to pursue other interests and spend time with his family. We are grateful for his guidance and commitment over the years."

Goodman declined to comment on speculation that Stagner’s exit from Mattress Firm was connected to a desire to reconnect with Tempur Sealy.

His exit came at nearly the same time that mattress maker Serta Simmons Bedding, the key supplier to Houston-based Mattress Firm, disclosed that its CEO, Michael Traub, is also leaving.

“While the Board is grateful to Michael for his many contributions, we believe the time is right for this transition,” the new Serta Simmons CEO, David Swift, said in a statement, according to Bloomberg.

The corporate departures come as the latest development in a period of turmoil for an industry that has engaged in intense competition, discounts, expansion and contraction.

Mattress companies are under pressure from digital competition, including surging bed-in-a-box sellers like Casper, which is opening dozens of stores this year to go along with its strong digital sales.

Taken together, the two departures call into question the future of the sales deal between Mattress Firm and Serta Simmons, which was formed after Mattress Firm’s previous deal with Tempur Sealy International collapsed suddenly in 2017.

Piper Jaffray analyst Peter Keith said it’s more than 90% probable that Mattress Firm and Sealy would get back together, with both parties "highly motivated" to renew the deal.

“We believe trust and durability of the relationship was the final hurdle, but these criteria would be hard to meet with Steve Stagner as CEO given his tenure during the period when the (Tempur Sealy-Mattress Firm) relationship deteriorated and ultimately blew-up in what can only be described as an irrational and emotionally charged fallout because it made no economic sense for either party,” Keith said in a research note to clients.

Tempur Sealy CEO Scott Thompson told investors in February that his company, a rival of Serta Simmons, has had "constructive" talks with Mattress Firm.

"When it comes to the Mattress Firm relationship, I would say it’s trending well," Thompson said at the time.

Mattress Firm, which still has about 2,600 stores, did not respond to questions about the possibility of a sales switch from Serta Simmons to Tempur Sealy.

Thompson had previously criticized Mattress Firm for "irrational" discounts. His company had also sued Mattress Firm in 2018 over accusations that the retailer was selling mattresses that looked like the Tempur-Pedic brand after the contract between the two companies ended.

Bed-in-a-box desires: Serta Simmons merges with bed-in-a-box company Tuft & Needle

Digital disruption: There’s a fierce battle over your bed: Industry goes to the mattresses

But Tempur Sealy said in February that it had settled that lawsuit.

Tempur Sealy’s stock has risen by more than 8% since Tuesday, when the Mattress Firm CEO’s departure was announced.

Tempur Sealy declined to comment Thursday. Serta Simmons representatives did not respond to a request seeking comment.

Serta Simmons CEO Traub told USA TODAY in August that the company had "a very strong relationship with Mattress Firm." He declined to comment on the retailer’s future but said Serta Simmons was already planning its 2019 products with Mattress Firm.

Casper CEO Philip Krim said digital disruption is roiling traditional mattress companies.

"The incumbents in this space continue to be distressed," Krim said in an interview Thursday. "They continue to not understand where the consumer landscape is going in this category and the owners of the respective businesses clearly are starting to see that."

Casper has 23 stores open so far and plans to open "dozens" more this year, Krim said. But he predicted that more traditional retailers will close stores.

"I think you’re going to continue to see a substantial retail shakeout," Krim said.

For Serta Simmons, supplying Mattress Firm has turned out to be much less lucrative than it originally hoped. Mattress Firm’s 2018 bankruptcy dramatically reduced the retail footprint of the nation’s largest mattress retailer.

S&P Global Ratings estimated in October that the fallout from the Mattress Firm bankruptcy would reduce Serta Simmons’ revenue "by at least the low- to mid-single-digit percent area" while increasing its debt relative to sales.
