Can you even remember when you last changed things up in bed?

I mean your mattress! What did you think I meant?

As you have started to think about this and shop around, you might have seen some great mattress options out there (like our list of best mattresses for 2020). But you’re interested infinding the best latex mattresson the market. When it comes to durability, you really will have a hard time beating one. But you might have questions when it comes to replacing one of the most vital components of your old bed. Not to worry!

You might even be wondering if a material such as latex is a smart choice for you. So consider your answers to these inquiries. Remember – there are no right or wrong answers here:

  • Do you have pressure points that cause you pain?
  • Do you end up feeling hot when you are sleeping on other kinds of surfaces?
  • Are you looking for a product you can customize?
  • Do you have a sleeping partner?
  • Are you in the market for a green, eco-friendly solution?

If any of your answers to these questions are yes, then a mattress composed of latex could represent an ideal solution. Of course, making a change can be concerning. After all, we are talking about where you sleep! You are going to spend approximately one third of your entire lifetime in bed. Why not make sure that time is as comfortable as possible? In addition, considering the durability issue, wouldn’t it be great to not have to worry about replacing any part of your bed for a long time?

When we talk about latex foam benefits, we have to talk about the material’s resistance to mold, mildew, and dust mites. If you are a dust mite allergy sufferer, then keeping their population down is key. Do not give them a safe haven! Instead, foam made out of this material sends them packing.

Keeping the allergens out is going to help you have a more restful sleep as your airways are going to stay clearer. And – bonus! – It will also help anyone else in your bed have a more restful sleep.

You sneezing or coughing in the middle of the night will not wake them up if you can find a product that ends your coughing or sneezing. And that is going to be a lot more comfortable for everyone.

Or are you always hot at night? Whether that is due to hot flashes, or you are just plain warm at night, a latex-style foam can keep you a lot cooler.

And consider the issue of support. If you have joint pain, such as from arthritis, or maybe a bad back or knees, the last thing you want is for your bed to sink in too much. You need for it to hold you up.

However, at the same time, you do not want to be sleeping on a board. Here is where this material can really shine, as it does double duty. It can support and cradle your form while, at the same time, it will give and shape to your body. Say goodbye to nights where stiff joints are bent like a pretzel as you struggle to get comfortable.

When ordering the Avocado, you can choose to add a pillow top layer to the standard version. Cedar Natural Luxe – Premium Build

Highlights:

  • Certified Organic Cotton
  • Certified Organic Latex

What makes it unique? The Zenhaven is a double-sided mattress with Luxury Plush and Gentle Firm options, so you can test two firmness levels during their generous 120-day trial period to see if a soft feel or a firmer feel is more comfortable.

Nest Bedding offers split comfort options, so you can have two different firmness levels side-by-side tailored to each person’s preferences and sleeping positions.

Why is it special? This bed is a great value with the benefits of a latex and coil hybrid design, such as increased airflow, bounce, and great edge support. What is a Foam Rubber Mattress?

Latex beds, at their core, are made from a rubberized material that has been whipped into a foam. This material has then been molded and cured (nearly always with pincore holes) in sheets that can be stacked on top of similar materials or integrated with others.

It is extremely versatile, serving a variety of functions from cooling to contouring. It is often hailed as a top material type due to the problems it solves for sleepers who have used other materials in the past. Keep reading to find out even more regarding the differences in organic, natural, synthetic, and blended types.

Natural vs. Synthetic vs. Blend

Latex dates back as far as the fourth century BC. But of course, that is the true article, the real deal. Synthetic rubber, in contrast, dates back to the early part of the last century.

The demand for synthetics can be traced in a direct line to the rise of the automobile. With a sudden skyrocketing increase in demand, natural sources could not keep up. The Bayer laboratory (the same people who worked on aspirin) succeeded in the polymerization of isoprene in 1909.

When you are considering a high rated latex mattress, you might be thinking about the differences between synthetic and natural, or whether you should split the difference and go with a blend. When we talk about latex, it is going to either be all-natural rubber, or a synthetic, or a mashup of those two types. When it comes to natural rubber, it is harvested by a method that is a lot like tapping and extracting sap for maple syrup.

Synthetic rubber is, of course, a man-made creation. And as you might expect, a blend is just these two types put together.

The most significant upside to synthetics is the price. However, they can have a rather strong rubbery smell, particularly in the first few days, so keep that in mind.

On the other hand, natural materials should not have that problem. In addition, an organic commodity is, by definition, a greener and more ecologically friendly solution. However, the price differential is a rather significant one.

For a natural product, you are looking at a price point difference which could easily be close to twice that for a man-made item.

However, as with other commodities which are purchased and are intended to last for a meaningful amount of time, a natural polymer is going to stand you in good stead for many years to come. An organic solution is also sometimes preferable when it comes to the possibility of customization.

During manufacturing, you can specify the firmness level in many cases, even for each side, therefore, if your partner prefers more lumbar support, then he or she can get it – and you are not going to have to compromise if you do not need it. Without compromises, both of you can get a better night’s sleep. And that is a recipe for a far better morning.

And be sure to keep in mind – it cannot be considered to be truly organic or natural unless it really is. Therefore, check the component materials closely. You do not want to be paying premium prices for a fully organic article when it turns out it is only partly organic!

In addition, it is not just the fact that it is organic that makes it a more eco-friendly solution. It is also natural rubber’s not so secret weapon – durability. A lasting product of any sort is a direct counter to our often throwaway culture, and your bedding is no exception when it comes to trying to save the planet.

So, if your organic purchase lasts as long as two or maybe even three iterations of a not-so organic version, that can mean fewer materials ending up in landfills.

Quick Overview

Latex mattresses have a unique feel that makes them a fan favorite among a large range of sleepers. Latex mattresses conform closely to the body, aligning the spine and alleviating pressure points much like memory foam beds. And yet, they typically sleep much cooler, are far more responsive, and last much longer, than most all-foam models. The average latex mattress will perform for at least eight years before it needs to be replaced. Other benefits include no noise when bearing weight, above-average motion isolation, and minimal odor/off-gassing potential.

Editor’s Choice Overview

The Awara Natural and Organic Latex Hybrid mattress is well-designed and features materials that are eco-conscious and deliver standout performance. For almost any type of sleeper, this mattress has all the ingredients for a restful night’s sleep, making it a clear choice for our Editor’s Pick.

The construction of the Awara mattress isn’t complicated, but it reflects a commitment to quality. The top layer is 4 inches of Dunlop latex that has been certified to be organic according to the demanding standards of the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). This latex has moderate contouring and noticeable bounce.

The support core is 9 inches of individually-wrapped innerspring coils. These are zoned coils, which means that they are more robust in specific areas that call for reinforcements based on where most body weight is applied. All in, the Awara Mattress measures 13 inches tall, providing an impressive profile with just as impressive support – particularly for heavier individuals.

The cover is made with a blend of Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified cotton and natural wool. These materials offer superior breathability and comfort cooling, making this mattress appealing for hot sleepers.

The ‘Medium Firm’ feel is soft enough that lightweight sleepers can get just the right amount of conforming to reduce impact at pressure points, while being supportive enough for heavier sleepers. The combined resilience of the latex and coils easily facilitate sexual activity, and the mattress boasts above-average edge support as well.

Awara extends their sleep trial to 365 nights, which is far longer than the majority of sleep trials in the industry. A lifetime warranty, also much longer than the industry norm, provides peace of mind that you’ll be covered if any defects arise.

The Bottom Line.

The Awara mattress features a standout construction that appeals to a wide range of sleepers, including hot sleepers, couples, and nearly any sleep position and body type. Plus, this bed is built to sleep cool and comfortable for at least seven years, if not longer.

Recommended for:

  • Every type of sleeper (side, back, stomach, combination). The hybrid construction of the Awara mattress readily adapts to the sleeper’s body weight in each sleep position, providing just enough contour for healthy spinal alignment.
  • Sleepers in all weight groups (light, average, heavy). The ‘Medium Firm’ feel will be most comfortable for sleepers of average weight or more, although many lighter-weight sleepers enjoy the Awara just as much.
  • Eco-conscious shoppers. The Awara is a green mattress made of organic and natural materials that have a low environmental impact.
  • Value seekers.Despite featuring an all-natural construction, the Awara mattress has a lower price-point than other latex hybrids. The mattress is also backed by the longest sleep trial and warranty periods you’ll find on the market today.

Not Recommended for:

  • Those who prefer a soft mattress. Thanks to its ‘Medium Firm’ rating and Dunlop latex comfort layer, the Awara mattress has an overall firmer feel that not all sleepers may enjoy, especially those who prefer plusher surfaces.
  • Chronic pain sufferers. The Awara mattress only provides moderate pressure relief, so it may not be the best choice for these sleepers.

Runner-Up Pick – Birch Mattress

Highlights

  • ‘Medium Firm’ (6.5)
  • 100-night sleep trial
  • 25-year warranty
  • Longer-than-average expected lifespan
  • Sleeps cool and comfortable for most

Runner Up Pick Overview

Our Runner-Up Pick is the Birch by Helix, also known as the Birch Mattress. This eco-friendly hybrid is constructed with comfort layers of natural/organic wool and natural Talalay latex, which provide consistent body conforming.

These materials also allow the bed to sleep exceptionally cool, since they are highly breathable and can help regulate the sleeper’s body temperature. The pocketed coil support core is reinforced with a layer of organic wool batting, which also helps air circulate through the bed.

The Birch Mattress is ‘Medium Firm,’ making it ideal for side and back sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds; it may also be suitable for lighter or heavier individuals who prefer moderate firmness and conforming. The components are sustainably sourced, as well. And because it is built with pocketed coils, the Birch Mattress is less prone to squeaking than innersprings and hybrids made with other coil types.

The Birch Mattress has a below-average price-point compared to other latex hybrids constructed with natural and organic materials. Birch also offers free shipping to all 50 states. The mattress is backed by a 100-night sleep trial and a 25-year warranty.

The Bottom Line.

The Birch Mattress has a lot to offer, just like our Editor’s Pick, the Awara. This one lost out to the Awara for our top spot due to having a slightly firmer construction (making it comfortable for a narrower range of sleepers). Also, at $999 (after your Tuck exclusive discount), the Awara offers an incredible value for a latex hybrid, while the Birch, at $1,299 (after your Tuck exclusive discount) is still a smart buy.

Recommended for:

  • Every type of sleeper (side, back, stomach, combination). The Birch Mattress offers a good mix of contouring and support for most sleep positions.
  • Sleepers in the average and heavy weight groups. The Birch Mattress has a true ‘Medium Firm’ feel, which feels most comfortable for sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more.
  • Hot sleepers.Every layer of the Birch Mattress promotes a cooler, more breathable sleep surface. Pocketed coils enable airflow through the support core of the mattress, while natural wool and ventilated latex in the comfort layers resist body heat and wick away moisture.
  • Eco-conscious shoppers. The Birch Mattress is made from organic wool and natural latex, both sustainable materials that increase the mattress’s lifespan while minimizing its environmental impact.

Not Recommended for:

  • Lightweight sleepers. The ‘Medium Firm’ feel of the Birch Mattress rates around a 6.5 on a 1-10 scale, which may feel too firm for sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds.
  • Sleepers who wake easily from noise or movement. The Birch Mattress does not sleep as quiet as all-latex models, and there is some potential for nighttime disruptions among those who sleep with a partner or pet.

  • 120-night sleep trial

  • Great motion isolation and sleeps cool
  • Free white glove delivery & old mattress removal

Best Luxury Overview

The Zenhaven by Saatva is a luxurious mattress for shoppers with a higher budget. This flippable latex mattress is built with one side that is ‘Medium Soft’ (or a 4 on the 1-10 firmness scale) and another side that is ‘Firm’ (7). This design allows owners to easily switch between two distinct comfort levels, making the Zenhaven ideal for sleepers whose firmness preferences may vary due to physical injury or recovery, weight loss or gain, or simply a change in preferences.

Like most all-latex models, the Zenhaven is eco-friendly, as well. Both comfort layers and the shared support core are made from Talalay latex, which offers body-hugging pressure relief and exceptional support. The cover is made from breathable organic cotton, allowing the mattress to sleep fairly cool.

Other strengths of the Zenhaven include very good motion isolation and no noise when bearing weight. And because it is constructed entirely from latex – one of the most durable mattress materials used today – the Zenhaven has an expected lifespan of at least seven years.

The Zenhaven, like other Saatva mattresses, qualifies for free White Glove delivery in the contiguous U.S. The bed is also backed by a 120-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty, both of which are longer than average.

The Bottom Line.

The flippable design of the Zenhaven mattress stands out as an appealing feature, but it’s not the only reason this bed earned our Best Luxury pick. The Zenhaven is made entirely from natural latex, so it will sleep cooler, last longer, and be kinder on the environment than most mattresses. Saatva also throws in a bevy of customer perks, including free White Glove delivery and longer-than-average sleep trial and warranty periods.

Recommended for:

  • Side and back sleepers.Either side of the Zenhaven provides exceptional support for back sleepers, while side sleepers may enjoy the plush comfort of the ‘Medium Soft’ side.
  • Sleepers in all weight groups (light, average, heavy). The Zenhaven features a durable construction that’s supportive for body types.
  • Couples. With the Zenhaven, Saatva has managed to design a bed that’s responsive enough for sex, yet sleeps quite still and silent, due to above-average motion isolation.
  • Eco-friendly shoppers. The Zenhaven is made entirely from natural materials, with an all-latex interior and cotton cover.

Not Recommended for:

  • Very overweight sleepers. The ‘Firm’ side of the Zenhaven provides good support for heavier back sleepers, but may be less supportive for those who weigh over 300 pounds or sleep on their side or stomach.
  • Those looking for strong edge support.Sleepers who sleep or sit on the sides of the bed may experience sinkage or “roll-off” at the edges.
  • Shoppers on a tight budgetThe Zenhaven is an all-latex mattress that comes at a higher price point due the materials used. That can make it too expensive for some mattress shoppers.

Best for Lightweight Sleepers – Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid

Highlights

  • Multiple firmness options (3.5, 5.5, 7.5)
  • 120-night sleep trial
  • 10-year warranty
  • Eco-friendly construction
  • Great sleeper and edge support

Tuck get 20% off the Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid.

Best for Lightweight Sleepers Overview

Some sleepers may prefer latex hybrids over all-latex beds. Due to their pocketed coil support cores, hybrids typically offer stronger edge support and better airflow than non-coil latex beds. The Bloom Hybrid from Brooklyn Bedding exemplifies all of these traits very well.

The bed measures 12″ thick and is available in three firmness settings – ‘Soft’ (3.5), ‘Medium’ (5.5), and ‘Firm’ (7.5) – to accommodate sleepers with differing comfort preferences. At a 3.5, the ‘Soft’ setting is one of the softest mattress options you’ll find today, making the Bloom Hybrid a perfect choice for lightweight sleepers who need a plusher feel.

The Bloom Hybrid is constructed with a top layer of organic cotton and Joma wool, which helps keep the mattress cool, followed by a 3-inch layer of natural Talalay latex for added cushioning and support. The 8-inch pocketed coil layer is reinforced with a high-density foam base that helps maintain an even surface for sleeping and minimizes sinkage around the edges where people tend to sit. The Bloom Hybrid also isolates motion transfer and noise to a noticeable degree, so the bed works well for couples and light sleepers, too.

Brooklyn Bedding offers free shipping within the contiguous U.S. The Bloom Hybrid is backed by a 120-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.

The Bottom Line.

With the Bloom Hybrid, Brooklyn Bedding has created a mattress that serves a range of body types, sleep positions, and sleep preferences. We’ve chosen this bed as our favorite pick for lightweight sleepers because the ‘Soft’ model is exceptionally soft, and the 3-inch layer of Talalay latex provides additional cushioning and comfort that’s sometimes hard for these sleepers to come by.

Recommended for:

  • Every type of sleeper (side, back, stomach, combination). The ‘Soft’ model is best for lightweight side sleepers, while stomach or back sleepers may prefer the firmer ‘Medium’ option.
  • Couples. The Bloom Hybrid absorbs motion much better than most hybrid mattresses, so the bed sleeps quieter as a result. However, it’s still bouncy enough to provide a great surface for sex.
  • Those who tend to sleep hot.The wool-blend cover wicks away moisture, while the latex comfort layer and pocketed coil core further neutralize the mattress temperature, resulting in a cool sleep experience.
  • Eco-friendly shoppers. The Bloom Hybrid is made from natural materials which give this mattress a longer lifespan and reduce its overall environmental impact.

Not Recommended for:

  • Those who want to be able to return their mattress quickly if they don’t love it.The 120-night sleep trial includes a mandatory 30-night break-in period.
  • Shoppers on a budget. As a hybrid model, the Bloom Hybrid carries a higher price tag than the average mattress.

Best for Average Weight Sleepers – Avocado Mattress

Highlights

  • Multiple firmness options (5.5, 6.5)
  • 365-night sleep trial
  • 20-year warranty

Best for Average Weight Sleepers Overview

The Avocado Green latex hybrid mattress has a zoned pocketed-coil design that uses lower-gauge (thicker) coils in the center and higher-gauge (thinner) coils around the perimeter. This allows the mattress to provide targeted support to heavier parts of the body, such as the shoulders, waist, or hips. It is also available in ‘Medium’ and ‘Medium Firm’ designs.

As a result, the mattress is ideally supportive for nearly any sleeper of average weight (those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds), whether they prefer to sleep on their side, stomach, or back. Those who prefer a slightly softer feel can get it with the ‘Medium’ model, while those who need a bit more firmness can opt for the ‘Medium Firm’ version.

The Avocado Green is a standout for several other reasons too. It is constructed from aerated Dunlop latex and organic wool comfort layers, as well as an organic cotton cover; these materials are eco-friendly and they sleep exceptionally cool. The mattress also has a long lifespan, as is typically the case for hybrids with thick latex layers. Noise potential for the Avocado Green is lower than average, as well.

Avocado ships mattresses free of charge to customers in all 50 states; White Glove delivery and old mattress removal are available for additional fees. The Avocado Green Mattress is backed by a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

The Bottom Line.

The Avocado Green made their mattress available in the two most popular firmness ratings – a ‘Medium’ and ‘Medium Firm.’ These also happen to be the most supportive firmness options for average weight sleepers. And because they are so close in feel (only separated by about 1 point on a 1-to-10 firmness scale), average-weight sleepers can truly hone in on the precise firmness level they need.

Recommended for:

  • Every type of sleeper (side, back, stomach, combination).Side sleepers of average weight may find the ‘Medium’ model more comfortable, while stomach sleepers will likely prefer the ‘Medium Firm’ model. Back sleepers can choose their model based on whether they generally prefer softer or firmer mattresses.
  • Couples where either partner is of average weight or heavier. We’ve chosen the Avocado Green as our Best Latex Mattress for Average Weight sleepers, but it’s just as supportive for heavier individuals who weigh over 230 pounds, particularly with the ‘Medium Firm’ model.
  • Those who tend to sleep hot.The hybrid design of the Avocado Green allows for a cooler sleep experience, thanks to good airflow throughout the pocketed coil core, and breathable comfort layers of organic wool and latex.
  • Eco-friendly shoppers. The Avocado Green uses organic wool and latex in the comfort layers, and recycled steel coils in the support core. Avocado is also known as one of the most eco-conscious mattress brands.

Not Recommended for:

  • Couples where one partner is a lightweight side sleeper.Either firmness setting of the Avocado Green may feel too firm for those who weigh less than 130 pounds.
  • Chronic pain sufferers. While the Avocado Green offers some conforming, it only offers average pressure relief.

Best for Heavyweight Sleepers Overview

The Botanical Bliss mattress from PlushBeds is a comfortable, eco-friendly option for heavyweight sleepers. This mattress is available in three thickness options – 9, 10, and 12 inches – to accommodate sleepers with different profile preferences and to provide more substantial support for heavier body types. The comfort layers are made of organic wool and three natural Dunlop latex layers. The cover is organic cotton, and the support core features organic Dunlop latex as well.

Two initial firmness options are available, ‘Medium’ (5.5) and ‘Firm’ (7.5). However, owners can adjust the firmness settings at any time by swapping the order of the three latex layers. Most heavier sleepers will enjoy optimal support from the ‘Firm’ model, although some side sleepers may enjoy the softer feel of the ‘Medium’ model.

In addition to the customizable design, the Botanical Bliss mattress has a longer-than-average lifespan. It also conforms closely and alleviates pressure points throughout the body. Additionally, the mattress isolates a good amount of motion transfer, produces no noise when bearing weight, and sleeps fairly cool compared to memory foam mattresses. This makes the mattress a good choice for couples and hot sleepers alike.

PlushBeds offers free delivery anywhere in the U.S. and a 100-night sleep trial. The Botanical Bliss mattress is backed by a 25-year warranty – one of the longest mattress warranties available.

The Bottom Line.

With the Botanical Bliss mattress, PlushBeds offers multiple options that cater to heavier sleepers. Either of the 10- or 12-inch profiles provide a thicker, more durable and supportive mattress for these sleepers, while the ‘Firm’ feel is ideal for anyone who weighs 230 pounds or more.

Recommended for:

  • Every type of sleeper (side, back, stomach, combination). The ‘Firm’ feel and use of Dunlop latex ensures heavier sleepers get the support they need, while the above-average conforming ability of the mattress provides a pressure-relieving, ultra comfortable sleep experience.
  • Couples. The Botanical Bliss is virtually silent when bearing weight, minimizing disruptions from a sleep partner moving during the night.
  • Back pain sufferers. The Botanical Bliss mattress uses Dunlop latex in each layer. This type of latex has a denser feel that provides heavier sleepers with better support, while still offering significant pressure and pain relief.
  • Those who like the close conforming of memory foam. The Botanical Bliss is unique for providing a highly conforming feel similar to a memory foam mattress, but on a much cooler sleep surface.

Not Recommended for:

  • Those looking for strong edge support.Like many all-latex beds, edge support with the Botanical Bliss is fair at best.
  • Those who want to be able to return their mattress quickly if they don’t love it.The 100-night sleep trial includes a mandatory 30-night break-in period.

Latex Mattress Buyer’s Guide

Below, we share everything sleepers need to consider when buying a latex mattress, along with our best tips for buying a new mattress.

Buyer’s Guide for Latex Mattresses

What You Need to Know about Sleeping on a Latex Mattress

Latex is considered one of the best materials for mattress construction due to its natural softness, breathability and resiliency. Latex is most commonly found in luxury mattresses with high price points, and may be used in both the comfort layer and support core. Natural latex may be rendered using either the Dunlop or Talalay manufacturing processes, although latex may also be made from synthetic latex foams.

Latex mattresses can be beneficial for a wide range of sleepers. Like memory foam, latex is a great choice for side sleepers because it will conform to your figure and support your body’s natural curves and contours. It also reduces motion transfer, which cuts down on nighttime disruptions for couples who share a bed. The uniformity of Talalay latex provides pain and pressure relief for sleepers with chronic back and shoulder pain, while the density and stability of Dunlop latex make it ideal for sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds.

The Feel of Latex

The distinct feel of a latex mattress is one of the reasons why this material is so popular with consumers. Let’s look at a few key benefits of all-latex and latex-hybrid mattresses.

  • Conforming:Latex will conform to your figure to help align the spine and alleviate pressure points throughout the body. Although a latex mattress won’t conform to a sleeper’s figure as much as a memory foam mattress, the natural shape recovery of latex ensures that you won’t make permanent indentations in the top surface.
  • Adjusting:Latex adjusts to a sleeper’s curves, rather than sinking beneath their weight like memory foam. As a result, latex is considered a good option for side and back sleepers with chronic back and shoulder pain.
  • Point elasticity and motion isolation:A unique property of latex is its point elasticity, which means that the latex is very elastic and capable of isolating motion transfer without disrupting other areas of the mattress. The softer the mattress, the higher the point elasticity level.
  • No noise:Latex mattresses are virtually silent when bearing weight. This makes for a quieter sleep surface suitable to those who are light sleepers, or share their bed with a partner or pet.
  • High durability and longer lifespans:Organic and natural latex mattresses typically last for eight years, which is two years longer than the average mattress lifespan. Blended and synthetic latex mattresses tend to last for up to six years.

Latex Mattress Reviews

We scoured the market to find the latest and most highly-rated latex mattresses. The seven models below made our final cut. Check them out to see which one is best for you and your home!

1. Awara Sleep (Editor’s Choice)

If you’re looking for a latex mattress that is firm, cool, and cozy – we offer you our top choice, the Awara Sleep mattress.

Constructed from organic, tree-tapped latex, this latex hybrid mattress contains no phthalates or formaldehydes. Hence, you can sleep easy knowing you’re surrounded by natural goodness. At 13-inches thick and with a firmness score of 6.5, this medium-firm latex mattress issuitable for all sleeping positionsand provides great spinal support all night long.

The Awara Organic Luxury Hybrid mattress consists of four layers: a plush cover, a 4-inch layer of latex foam, individually wrapped coils, and a soft cotton or poly base layer.

The plush euro top cover is made from humanely-sourced organic cotton and New Zealand wool for a cool, soft, and comfortable sleeping surface. Even during hot summer nights, the air is able to flow unhindered through the natural wool fibers to reduce your sleeping temperature. In addition to that, the breathable cotton materials wick away moisture, preventing any perspiration buildup.

Next up is the natural latex layer. This layer is impressively 4-inches thick, double the thickness of many latex hybrid mattresses for a luxurious feel. Combined with the breathable upper layer, the latex foam works to keep you cool, even in humid conditions.

Below this is the thickest layer of them all – the 9-inch support core layer. Packed with individually-wrapped coils, this layer evenly distributes your weight and supports your body from head to toe, aligning your spine to maintain proper posture while you sleep. Pressure points in the key areas of the shoulders, knees, and hips are dramatically reduced. However, if you suffer from chronic joint pain, you may prefer a mattress that has a softer firmness level for greater cushioning around sore areas.

Even though this Awara mattress contains numerous coils and has a gentle ‘bounce’ to it, we were impressed to see that motion transfer is well-controlled. This is great if you regularly sleep with a restless partner, as you can rest assured their nighttime movements will not jolt you from your slumber.

Overall, the Awarasleep is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a cool-sleeping, highly-supportive hybrid latex mattress which utilizes natural materials. However, it’s worth noting that the firmness level may feel a little hard for a lightweight side sleeper or those who enjoy the sensation of ‘sinking’ into their mattress.

If you’d like to give this Awara mattress a try, the product offers an exceptional365-night sleep trial, which is much more generous than competing brands. What’s more, there’s alifetime warranty, as well, for ultimate peace of mind.

  • Made from organic natural latex
  • Organic New Zealand wool and cotton cover for breathability
  • Individually-wrapped coils cradle and support your body
  • Limited motion-transfer is perfect for sleeping with a partner
  • Excellent support and pressure relief particularly on the joints
  • Firmness level may be too high for lightweight side sleepers
  • Those with chronic joint pain may prefer a softer surface
  • Not suitable for people who like to ‘sink’ into their mattress

2. Zenhaven (Best For Side Sleepers)

For side sleepers or those with musculoskeletal problems and allergies, the American made Talalay Zenhaven is a great choice of mattress for a healthy night’s rest.

Presenting a five-zone latex comfort layer for spinal support and an organic wool upper for supreme comfort, the Zenhaven mattress is an excellent sleep option. It provides a unique combination of soft-to-the-touch feel, yet firm support that is ideal for relieving pressure on the sensitive joints of the human body such as the shoulders and hips. The combined traits make it our pick for the best latex mattress for side sleepers.

The Zenhaven mattress also comes with a highly-breathable, quilted, organic cotton cover which will keep you cool all night long, while enhancing the eco-friendliness of the product. Similar to other natural latex mattresses, it is hypoallergenic and contains zero synthetic foams. This latex mattress is perfect if you suffer from allergies or wish to avoid unnecessary chemicals.

The initially soft and springy nature of the material alleviates stress on your muscles and bones as you lie down. It conforms to your body to help eliminate pressure points. Once you’re lying down, the rigidity kicks in to support your body weight and ensure your spine remains aligned throughout the night. However, due to its springiness, this Zenhaven mattress does lack edge support and will likely be too soft for heavier sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds.

The Zenhaven organic mattress comes with a20-year warrantyand a120-night in-home sleep trialto ensure your satisfaction and comfort with the product.

  • Soft yet supportive design makes it ideal for a side sleeper
  • Free from synthetic materials and naturally hypoallergenic mattress
  • Latex layer with 5-zone design to correct spinal alignment
  • Organic wool layer and cotton cover keep you cool
  • With a 20-year warranty and a 120-night trial
  • Expensive
  • May be too soft to support heavier sleepers
  • Edge support could be better

3. Idle Sleep Talalay (Organic Choice)

Our pick of the best organic latex mattress is the Idle Sleep Talalay. By combining multiple comfort and support layers of organic wool and natural, tree-tapped Talalay latex, this flippable hybrid mattress will provide support and pressure relief from head to toe.

The Idle Sleep mattress is available in medium and luxury-firm on the firmness scale, which makes it the ideal choice if you like to sleep on your back or on your side. The multiple layers cradle and conform gently to your body weight, keeping your back and neck in perfect alignment. However, if you prefer to sleep on your stomach, weigh under 130 pounds or suffer from chronic joint pains, then luxury-firm latex mattress may be too hard for you to get comfortable, so opt for the medium feel instead.

All the materials that make up this Talalay latex mattress are sustainably sourced, as well as extremely breathable. The organic cotton cover and natural wool fibers circulate air to wick away excess body heat. Additionally, the pocketed coils in the support core are reinforced with fabric to further encourage airflow.

The pocketed coil layer supports sleeping posture very well, but unfortunately, this contributes to some motion transfer. This means that your partners’ movements may reach you during the night, potentially jolting you awake if you’re a light sleeper. However, unlike many memory foam mattresses, the Idle mattressoffers great edge support, so you’ll never feel like you’re about to fall off the bed if you like to sleep close to the sides.

All in all, the 2-sided Idle mattress is a fantastic product for eco-conscious users. Its blend of all-natural latex and organic materials creates a wonderfully cool and body-aligning sleeping surface, reinforced by a pocketed coil layer and excellent edge support. This Talalay latex bed also offers an18 month sleep trialand aWarranty Without End.

  • Crafted from a blend of sustainably sourced natural latex and organic materials
  • Medium feel level is perfect for side or back sleepers
  • Organic cotton cover and natural wool fibers keep you cool
  • Pocketed coil layer supports proper spinal alignment
  • Great edge support
  • 2-sided mattress
  • Available in two firmness levels
  • Motion isolation isn’t the best
  • A little pricey

4. Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid (Best Hybrid)

If you’re looking for the best latex hybrid mattress, the Brooklyn Bloom is the mattress for you. Offering a pocket coil support core and a combination of Talalay latex and other high-quality natural materials, this hybrid mattress is both comfortable and supportive. The Brooklyn Bloom Hybrid is available in a choice of three firmness levels: soft, medium and firm. In this review, we’ll focus on the ‘medium’ firmness option.

Perfect if you hate feeling hot at night, the plush top cover comprises a mixture of organic cotton and Joma wool, which enhances breathability for a cozy, yet cool night’s slumber. Next, a three-inch layer of Talalay natural latex cushions your body, relieving tension in sore muscles and gently cradling your pressure points. Although, it won’t provide the same level of cushioning as a memory foam mattress.

This latex layer is followed by an 8-inch layer of pocketed coils for optimum support, encouraging healthy spinal alignment while you sleep. The layer of springy coils is reinforced by a high-density foam base. This helps to bolster edge support and prevent a sinking sensation when sleeping close to the rim of the mattress. You’ll find this ideal if you’re often pushed to the edge by your sleeping partner. Motion transfer is effectively reduced, too, so you shouldn’t be disturbed if your partner tosses and turns or decides to get up in the night.

The Brooklyn Bloom latex mattress is suitable for all sleeping positionsbut may struggle to support larger body types. Heavy stomach sleepers may find that it sags and provides inadequate support. It comes complete with a120-night sleep trialand a generous10-year warrantyfor peace of mind.

  • Available in multiple firmness levels to suit your needs
  • Organic cotton and Joma wool blend cover feels plush and cool
  • Talalay natural latex layer cushions and supports your body
  • Pocketed coils promote correct posture all night long
  • Great edge support and motion transfer limitation
  • Doesn’t provide enough support for a heavy stomach sleeper
  • Some sleepers may not like the ‘springy’ responsiveness
  • May be too firm for those with chronic joint pains

5. Avocado Green (Firm Choice)

If you prefer a firm bed to keep you aligned at night, then the Avocado Green mattress is one of the latex beds for you.

Constructed from a combination of organic wool comfort layers, an organic, breathable cotton cover, and organic aerated latex, the Avocado Green mattress is packed with natural and effective materials for a great night’s sleep. Each material is sustainably sourced, too, so you can sleep with a clear conscience.

Offering a hybrid design, this mattress features specialized pocket coils that vary in width across the bed. In the center, lower-gauge, thicker coils work hard to support the larger parts of the body, such as your hips and shoulders, while thinner, higher-gauge coils at the edges of the mattress support your limbs. This means you will feel perfectly aligned from head to toe with no sinking or sagging beneath heavier areas.

Due to its clever structure, the Avocado mattress issuitable for all sleeping positions, whether you prefer to sleep on your stomach, side or back. Of course, this mattress is created to be firm, so if you’re a very lightweight side sleeper with joint pain, bear in mind that you may find it a little too hard for your liking.

The Avocado mattress is perfect for sleepers who like a firm surface to keep them well-supported, but it does have a couple of drawbacks. The mattress is very heavy, so you’ll have trouble if you need to move it single-handedly. Additionally, it tends to lose edge support if you use it on a box spring base.

Setting those minor issues aside, though, this mattress is praised highly in natural latex mattress reviews. The use of completely organic natural materials is a great plus, while the365-night sleep trial and 20-year warrantymean you can try it out for a whole year, risk-free.

  • Best natural latex mattress – made with all-natural, sustainably sourced organic materials
  • Breathable cotton cover and wool comfort layers
  • Clever pocket coil design provides greater support where required
  • Suitable for all sleeping positions
  • Generous 365-night trial
  • Less suitable for very lightweight individuals who suffer from joint pains
  • The mattress is very heavy and difficult to move without assistance
  • Edge support may be lost if used on a box spring base

6. PlushBeds Botanical Bliss (Best For Heavy People)

Even with a range of firmness options to choose from, heavy people often struggle to find latex beds that offer the right level of support and softness. That’s where our best latex foam mattress for heavy sleepers comes in – the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss.

Recommended by chiropractors and orthopedic specialists, this latex mattress offers customizable firmness options to meet your individual needs. The multiple layers of organic Dunlop latex can be adjusted in different areas so that your body weight is distributed perfectly across the mattress, effectively alleviating pressure points for a comfortable night’s sleep, no matter your preferred position.

With a pure New Zealand wool liner and organic cotton cover, which has moisture removing and naturally antimicrobial properties, the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss offers a fresher and cooler sleeping surface. Heat and moisture are wicked away as you sleep, so you’ll rest easy even on hot nights.

On the downside, this latex mattress is rather heavy to move and offers limited edge support. So, if you like to sit or sleep towards the side of the bed, you may feel like you’re about to fall off. Also, as this mattress is very supportive, if you prefer the sensation of ‘sinking’ into your mattress, you’ll be better off opting for a memory foam material.

This mattress offers a100-night guarantee and a 25-year warranty.

  • Great level of support for heavy sleepers
  • Suitable for all sleeping positions and body types
  • Customizable firmness options
  • Made from organic Dunlop latex, cotton and New Zealand wool
  • Highly breathable and free from chemicals
  • Lacks edge support, so may feel insecure if you like to sit or sleep in this area
  • Not suitable for those who like the sensation of sinking into their mattress
  • Very heavy and difficult to move single-handedly

7. Spindle Natural Latex (Best Value)

If you’re looking for 100% natural latex mattresses brands on a budget, then the Spindle Mattress is our top choice.

Made from 100% natural latex, it is an ideal choice for those who need acustomizable and supportivemattress without breaking the bank.

The Spindle mattress is constructed from three layers of natural latex, which you can change around as you wish to get the perfect level of firmness. All these layers are 3-inches thick, but their density and firmness level depends upon which you choose when you order.

You can opt for any combination of ‘medium’ and ‘firm’ layers as you wish, and change where they are positioned to meet your individual needs. No matter which you choose, this mattress offers a cushioned feeling which gracefully accommodates hips and shoulders to provide the perfect spinal alignment without pressure points. The organic cotton cover is highly-breathable for a cool and comfortable night’s sleep. Additionally, the eco-wool batting isRainforest Alliance certifiedand helps to wick away moisture on those humid evenings.

As you can tell from the excellent combination of layers, the Spindle latex mattress boasts high-quality construction. There are no harmful chemicals or inorganic substances used in the manufacturing of this eco-friendly mattress. Hence, you can sleep easy knowing you’re surrounded by natural and safe materials.

As an added benefit, the Spindle Mattress is alsoOeko Tex Certified, which means there are no fire retardants, no polyfoam, or synthetic latex used. This certification is granted by an independent firm and is one of the strictest certifications you can find for safe textiles.

Considering its price-point, the Spindle Mattress offers tremendous bang for your buck, but there are a few negative aspects to be aware of. The mattress is very heavy, so you’ll need some assistance to move it when needed. Edge support is rather weak for heavy individuals and some people may find the customization process confusing.

Overall, though, the Spindle Mattress is one of the mattressesbest suited to fussy sleepers, thanks to its range of options and at-home customizability. They also offer a365-night trial and a limited 10-year warranty, so you can try it out without any commitment.

  • Heavy and awkward to move alone
  • Some people may find the customization process confusing

What Is A Latex Mattress?

In its simplest form, a latex foam mattress is a product that has been manufactured using the collected and processed sap of a rubber tree, instead of using traditional bedding technology such as air, memory foam, or springs.

They are widely considered to be thebest mattresses for back pain, as well as the most durable, natural, and healthy. Latex mattresses are also popular for those with allergies because thehypoallergenicorganic material makes them much less likely to trigger their condition.

Three Different Types Of Latex

There are three different types of latex which are commonly used to populate a mattress’s inner core:natural, synthetic, andblended.

Each type has similar characteristics such as the springy feel and good firmness, but they differ greatly in price, overall quality, and general longevity.

Let’s take a look at each of the three types in more detail.

1. Natural (Organic)

An organic latex mattress is made from processed rubber tree sap or serum, which is a sticky milky fluid found beneath the bark of the rubber tree.

It is collected by a process called “tapping”. Small incisions are made into the bark of the tree, which allows the fluid to flow out and be collected. Once it has been harvested, the sap is taken to be refined using a chosen processing method.

It is rare to find natural latex mattresses for sale in retail outlets and showrooms. This is because, due to the high costs involved in extraction and manufacturing, they arerelatively expensivecompared to other types

If you’re on the hunt for natural latex mattresses, the ideal place to look is online or via our latex mattress reviews above. Online stores often offer greater customization options, as well as great prices.

2. Synthetic (Man-Made)

‘Synthetic’ refers to man-made material. Therefore, synthetic latex is made by polymerizing a monomer such asstyrenethat has been emulsified with surfactants.

The result is a material that behaves in a similar way to organic latex, but without the hard work and expense of farming, extraction, and processing of the raw sap. Synthetic latex mattresses are widely available and much cheaper than the natural alternative but they often have a shorter lifespan and a lesser firmness when compared to organic latex.

3. Blended (Mixed)

As the name suggests, blended latex is a mixture of both organic and synthetic. Usually, blended latex consists of around80% syntheticand20% organiclatex. It is possible, however, to find mixtures where natural latex makes up a 50% equal mix, but due to the costs involved, this is quite rare.

Beware of manufacturers who claim to be selling blended latex foam mattresses but fail to quote the percentage of natural content – you may be disappointed to find the percentage of natural latex is much less than expected.

Blended latex is a fairly common option. It is relatively cheap and offers a good balance of the two types when it comes to building quality, durability, and overallvalue for money.

What Are The Benefits Of A Latex Mattress?

Eco-conscious shoppers are sure to love latex mattresses because of their natural materials and environmental friendliness.

As we discussed earlier, the latex used in these mattresses is derived from the rubber sap or serum from a tree. The process is just as environmentally sustainable as harvesting maple syrup. Hence, its consumers can rest assured that no harm will come to the natural world because of their choice of mattress.

Another benefit of choosing an organic latex mattress is itsnatural resistance to dust mites, mold, and mildew. Allergy sufferers and germ-a-phobes alike love latex mattresses for their ability to help you sleep soundly without the fear of congestion or health issues.

Natural latex is also a great sleeping surface. It offers comfort and support, similar to memory foam, but latex is easier to move around on. Thus, you won’t experience that ‘stuck in place’ sensation which is common to memory foam beds. Additionally, many latex mattresses are customizable to your needs. So, even if you and your partner have different firmness preferences, you can each get what you’re looking for.

Finally, the lifespan of even a budget latex mattress is quite a bit longer than that of a typical innerspring. Even though they are more expensive in the first instance, latex mattresses often end upcosting less over their lifetime. Innersprings usually need replacing after five to ten years. Whereas some of the best latex mattresses can last 20 years or more if looked after properly.

Is Latex Better Than Memory Foam?

Latex mattresses have been around for many years. In fact, they were sold at major department stores in the 50s.

They have long been known for theireco-friendliness, and their ability to promote good health by resisting mold, mildew, and dust mites. However, until recently, they hadn’t been known for their overall comfort.

Memory foam mattresses are always highly rated on comfort. They help to increase circulation, relieve pressure points and are generally thought to be the best sleeping surface available on the market today. However, ordinary memory foam is made with harsh chemicals and has recently needed regulation by the US and independent agencies worldwide to ensure the chemicals used aren’t too harmful to people or the environment.

Memory foam is alsonotorious for sleeping hotand many people dislike the sensation of being hugged by their mattress. This issue is rarely seen in latex mattress complaints.

Nobody wants to decide between comfort and health, especially when it comes to a bed. After all, you will spend a considerable percentage of your time in bed, so it’s important to “have it all” with both comfort and health. That’s why newer hybrid mattresses have begun to feature both latex and memory foam. That is, with latex usually being the topmost layer which the sleeper will be in contact with. This way, if you like the benefits of memory foam but without the drawbacks, you really can have the best of both worlds.

In the end, latex foam mattresses are just as comfortable and rate just as highly on comfort scales as memory foam, but with significantlymore health benefitsand an eco-consciousness that does not exist as often in traditional memory foam mattresses.

For a full breakdown of the two, please check our comparison on latex vs. memory foam.

Latex vs Innerspring Mattresses

They are what most of us think of when we think of a mattress. They come in many shapes and sizes and are typically topped with some sort of added cushioning, along with batting or other fibers for extra plushness.

Innerspring is considered some of the most readily available and affordable mattresses on the market, although their lifespan is relatively short when compared to other mattress types around today. They are also typically covered inchemical flame-retardants, and it is not possible to find one that is “all-natural” or organic.

Latex mattresses have also been around for many years, but not in their current foam form. Nowadays latex mattresses are built to becomfortable and luxurious. They are made in layers for both support and comfort and are possible to be customized according to individual needs. All of these come with a much higher price tag, too.

When innerspring mattresses begin to sag and irritate pressure points like shoulders and hips, modern latex mattressesalleviate that painby pushing back into these pressure points. This makes them especially good for people withchronic back and joint issues.

What Is A Hybrid Latex Mattress?

As the name suggests, hybrid latex mattresses combine latex with another type of mattress- typically memory foam or innerspring.

The average hybrid latex mattress comes in multiple layers. Most commonly, a foam or spring base to support the core and offer additional stability. It could be a spring or foam core to create the height and provide support while reducing motion transfer, and finally, a comfort layer made from latex.

Various elements in a hybrid latex mattress can be customized, such as the density of the foam or the gauge and number of coils in the core. All of these factors make a big difference in your comfort. Therefore, if you’re thinking about a latex hybrid, make sure you understand what firmness score you are looking for. Moreover, you can review the warranty information to ensure you are getting the best coverage for your mattress.

With more elements and layers than traditional innerspring or traditional latex mattresses, hybrids can come with their own set of problems. However, they combine the better of two very popular mattress worlds with great comfort and support at affordable prices.

Latex Mattresses and Sleeping Positions

Medium firm latex foam mattresses are ideal for relieving and reducing back pain in both chronic and occasional sufferers. Sleeping on your back on a medium firm mattress is suggested by doctors as the best solution to avoid or eliminate back and joint pain. The lack of pressure points along with the customizable support of latex beds is a great way of achieving this.

Of course, side, fetal position, and stomach sleepers are welcome on latex beds, as well. However, you will want to customize the mattress’s density to suit your sleeping position.

For side sleepers, a medium to soft option would be best. Your body can sink naturally into the latex mattress in areas that would take on more pressure from this position under normal circumstances. If this is your position of choice, make sure you sleepwith a firm pillow between your kneesso your hips and spine can stay aligned properly.

Stomach sleeping is never recommended because it causes your neck to be misaligned with the rest of your spine. However, if you are simply most comfortable on your stomach, be sure to get a medium-soft density mattress. Doing so will allow your body to sink correctly, maintain spinal alignment, and reduce pressure points at the shoulders or knees.

Types Of Latex Mattresses

There are three main categories or types: all-latex, latex over foam, and foam over latex.

Each has its own unique design and structure and so performs differently to its peers. Below we identify and discuss each one individually so you can choose the best mattress for you.

1. All Latex

As expected, this means the whole mattress from top to bottom and edge to edge is made of latex, whether it be 100% natural, blended or synthetic, Dunlop or Talalay. There could be one or more layers, but the trait is that there are no other materials used in the inner section of the mattress (mattress covers are almost never made from latex).

Unfortunately, all latex mattresses are usually less common in the marketplace and more expensive. On the positive side, they provideexceptional orthopedic support, good motion isolation, and haveno off-gassing issues(unlike memory foam mattresses).

2. Latex Over Foam

As the name would suggest, this type of mattress is a multiple-layered design which has a thinner top layer of latex over a thicker foam base. The base usually consists of cooling gel or Visco memory foam.

Latex-over-foam mattresses are usually easier to find than all latex ones. However, they are not always cheaper. The thickness of each layer will determine the overall price you pay. This type of mattress is still a great choice for joint pain or reducing back problems. What’s more, they also provide good motion isolation.

3. Foam Over Latex

Here you’ll find the opposite of the above, which features a thinner gel or Visco memory foam upper layer over a thicker latex base.

The multiple-layered design is usually inserted in between a foam top and a foam base platform. The gel layer could be as little as two inches thick. These types of mattresses are often great for extra cushioning if you prefer a hugging sensation. It’s also ideal for people who have lightweight builds or who suffer from very sensitive joints.

What’s The Difference Between Dunlop and Talalay?

You may have seen the termDunloporTalalaycrop up recently. Although it may sound as if these are kinds of latex, these names actually refer to different processing and manufacturing methods.

We discuss each method below:

Dunlop

The Dunlop process is the traditional processing method that has been in use since the 1920’s.

The extracted liquid sap from rubber trees is poured into a mold and heated, or baked into its solid form. The gradually cooled lump which you’re left with is then removed from the mold, which is what makes your Dunlop latex mattress core.

Unfortunately, as sediments tend to settle at the bottom, this method often produces an inconsistent core that creates a softer overall finish at the top and gradually becomes harder at the bottom.

Talalay

The Talalay process is similar to Dunlop but with two additional steps.

After the liquid extracted from rubber trees is poured into the mold, the mold is sealed closed, and a vacuum is created to disperse the liquid serum throughout the mold. The serum is then flash-frozen before it’s baked into its solid form.

The cooled lump is then removed from the mold and what you then have is your Talalay latex material ready to be wrapped and refined into an end product. The additional vacuum and flash-freezing processes help to prevent any inconsistencies in density.

Which Is Better Dunlop or Talalay Latex?

The two additional steps between the processing methods make all the difference in the characteristics of the end product.

The Talalay process takes twice as long to manufacture than Dunlop. This manufacturing cost reflects on the overall price of the finished material, which essentially means that a Talalay latex mattress will tend to be more expensive than a Dunlop.

Dunlop is denser at the base, so it is firmer and widely adopted as a base platform, whereas Talalay latex is great for a more soft or plush finish for a comfort layer.

Our advice is that neither is better than the other, it all boils down to personal preference and budget.

In addition, the Zenhaven is the onlyflippable mattresson this list, with a firmer side and a softer side. This innovative design makes it a great match for those who don’t quite know what firmness they are looking for.

Avocado

The Avocado is a latex hybrid mattress constructed with thick layers of natural dunlop latex and pocketed support coils. Consumers also have the option ofa pillow topto the bed which adds a fluffy comfortable feel and added pressure relief to the top of the mattress.

With the pillow top, the Avocado is my favorite latex mattress for side sleeping. Natural dunlop latex is not always the best with pressure relief. However, the pillow top does an excellent job of relieving pressure on the shoulders and hips to the bed.

Out of all these eight mattresses, it is probably themost pressure relieving. In addition, the pocketed coils are very supportive and should be able to support even much heavier weights.

The comfortable top and support coils also make this anexcellentoption for combination sleepers. The pillow top provides pressure relief when people are on their side while the coils provide support while they are on their back and stomach.

The Bloom Hybrid is also a hybrid mattress that features a cover quilted with soft wool, then a 3″ layer of Talalay latex, followed by 8″ of individually-encased coils. Consumers can also choose from three firmness options:Soft, Medium, and Firm.

This Medium model features thebest balance of comfort and supportout of all these mattresses, and it is also my favorite mattress for combination sleepers.

If people lie on their back, their hips should sink in while they also feel the general support of the steel coils. Moving to the side, the comfort layer should relieve pressure on the shoulders and hips. Finally, on the stomach, the mattress should keep people’s hips from sinking in too far and creating back pain issues.

For those people whochange positions at night, the Bloom Hybrid is a particularly great option.

This is mytop pick for back sleepingout of this list, because it has an average firmness and is right in that sweet spot for back sleepers. The quilted cover and comfort layerallow the hips to sink in just the right amountwhile the coils offer support beneath that.

Fully Customizable

Spindle

The Spindle is a very interesting all-latex mattress, because when people purchase their mattress, they choose what firmness level they want. Then the company sends them three 3″ layers of Dunlop latex, and the person is responsible for flipping and arranging those layers toget the exact firmness option they want.

This makes the Spindle bed thebest option for customization, because if people really don’t know what firmness you want, the Spindle bed allows them to hone in on exactly what they are looking for. In addition, if people find that they want something even firmer or softer, Spindle will replace a layer for free.

Most Affordable

GhostBed

The GhostBed is the one mattress on this list thatdoes not contain all-natural latex; It is actually a synthetic latex that has only a little bit of that latex, bouncy feel.

The mattress features the synthetic latex foam over memory foam, over a base support foam. The mattress is a bitfirmer-than-averageand is a good match for back sleepers and stomach sleepers.

Because the mattress does not use real latex, it is also much more affordable than the other mattresses on this list. If you want just some of that latex bounce, and you don’t want to pay so much money, the GhostBed should be a great option for you.

What Makes The GhostBed Stand Out?

  • The GhostBed is agreat, affordable mattressthat is one of the better values out there on the market.
  • It is a firmer-than-average mattress that should work for back and stomach sleeping.
  • The mattress has just abit of the latex feel, and people shouldn’t have difficulty moving around.

Best For Stomach Sleepers

Awara

The Awara is also a new mattress that features asimple constructionwith a tufted cover, 4″ of Dunlop latex, and 9″ of pocketed coils.

This is thefirmest out of these eight mattresses, which makes it thebest latex mattress for stomach sleepers. They should feel the proper amount of support on their hips and their spine should be neutrally aligned when they sleep.

The Awara is also avery supportivemattress, as the latex and coils should be able to support much heavier weights. Larger back sleepers and stomach sleepers should definitely take a measured look at the Awara.

If people need a supportive, all-natural mattress, the Awara should work for them if they want something a little on the firm side.

What Makes The Awara Stand Out?

  • The mattress features all-natural Dunlop latex which doesn’t contain harmful chemicals.
  • The Awara is thefirmest mattresson this list.
  • It is very supportive and should be agreat option for almost all stomach sleepers.
  • The Awara should also be an excellent match for heavier back and stomach sleepers.

The Awara is a firmer latex hybrid mattress that could be a good pick forback and stomach sleepers.

Best Latex Mattress For Back Pain

I am not a doctor, so please take everything I say here with a grain of salt. People should definitely consult a physician if they have any serious pain issues whatsoever. Having said that, if people have back pain they will want a mattress that doesn’t make things worse and potentially can help alleviate any pain/stress. Studies show that a mattress that is firmer than average is best for people with back pain. People will also want a mattress that is not going to sag over time, because many times mattresses that start out fine sag and break down over a period of time (causing back pain issues).

TheAvocado mattressis a latex foam bed that is an especially great fit for those with back pain issues. The pocketed coil support system and natural latex are highly supportive and durable materials that should be good for people of all weights. If people get the option without the pillow top, the mattress will be a little more than medium firm, which is ideal in this case for people with back pain. It’s also just a great value overall with an organic cotton cover, so I would strongly recommend giving the Avocado mattress some consideration for people who want a great mattress that may be ideal for back pain issues.

Best Latex Mattress For The Money

If people want to get an all natural latex mattress, they have to understand that they definitely will pay a higher price for it, because natural latex is very difficult and costly to source. Most organic latex comes from the rubber trees in Sri Lanka, so not only is it a costly process, but also the raw materials are sourced from places far away from the United States. When we talk about getting the best mattress for the money, the price tag is still going to be significantly higher than with other types of mattresses. People should also note that natural latex is very durable, so the mattresses they can get will be a good value because they last so long.

We think that theSpindle mattressis potentially the best for the money in this category, because consumers can get a Queen Spindle for $1,349.99. Again, while that may seem like a high price tag, it’s a mattress that uses natural latex that is quite a good deal and is better priced than just about any of its competitors. The company has very little overhead and doesn’t spend much money at all on marketing and advertising, so it is able to price its mattress at the point it does. If people want the best value possible, Spindle is a great place to look, because of the nature of how the company is run.

Are Latex Mattresses Good for Heavier Sleepers?

Marten is a staff writer for us who has participated in all our latex mattress reviews, and he weighs about 230 lb and is 6’7″ tall; I am 5’9″ and 160 lb. Here is what he thought about these mattresses:

Out of this list, there are five that I think are best for heavier people for a number of reasons.

First, we have the Spindle, which is a great option if you want to be able to configure your mattress. By flipping and rearranging the layers, people can find the appropriate firmness for the. I was able to find the right configuration for me in pretty much any position.

If people are heavier back sleepers, they should lean toward the Avocado or Cedar, because they are both hybrid mattresses that allow the hips to sink into the comfort just the right amount. I then feel the support of coils beneath that, which provides great additional support, durability, and breathability (from the organic cotton cover).

For heavier side sleepers, people should take a measured look toward the Bloom Hybrid, because that mattress might have the best pressure relief out of all the mattresses on this list.

For stomach sleepers, people should take a hard look at the Awara, because it is the firmest of these mattresses, and my hips don’t bow in when I am lying on my stomach.

It seems that Marten and I agree on most of these points, but hedid prefer the Bloom Hybrid for side sleeping. If people are heavier sleepers, it is worth taking Marten’s experience into account given his different opinions.

The Benefits Of Latex Mattresses

There are plenty of reasons why latex mattresses are becoming more and more popular, and there have been numerous new brands that have entered into the market recently. This type of mattress can offer a lot of different, wide-ranging benefits:

  • DurabilityNatural latex mattresses will typically last longer than memory foam or poly foam because of the density of the foams used in the construction. Latex foam mattresses shouldn’t sag the way many foam mattresses are wont to do, so if you are viewing your purchase as a long-term investment, then this could be a huge benefit.
  • BounceThis is more of a personal preference type of thing, but latex mattresses are known for having great bounce overall, making the mattresses potentially good for sex and they make it easier to move around in the bed and/or switch sleeping positions.
  • No feeling stuckMemory foam owners often complain about the feeling of getting stuck in their mattress, but this is not the case with latex foam. The surface is very responsive and people don’t slowly sink into it, meaning they can get good pressure relief with latex foam without the extra sinking in feeling.
  • Natural– Natural latex foam is really the only way for a mattress to be considered “Green.” Some companies may claim that their mattress is eco-friendly, but unless they use natural latex that is not actually going to be the case. If people want a real green mattress with natural materials, latex is the way to go because there aren’t really any other good options out there.
  • Good for hot sleepers. If you overheat at night, a latex mattress could be a good option. Latex is naturally breathable and also helps dissipate heat. While materials like memory foam are known to trap heat, this shouldn’t be an issue with a latex mattress.

The Drawbacks Of Latex Mattresses

If anyone has seen any of our latex mattress reviews, they will know that latex is definitely not for everyone, and there are a few drawbacks to consider when it comes to latex mattresses:

  • Weight– Natural latex mattresses are very dense and thus very heavy and difficult to move around. Consumers will need at least two people to move the mattresses around successfully. This isn’t that big of a deal once people get their mattress set up, but if they think they’ll ever have to move your mattress very much, then this could be something to consider.
  • Higher cost– Natural latex is very difficult and costly to source. As a result, these mattresses tend to cost quite a bit. You have to be willing to pay a lot of money to get these mattresses. These mattresses will last a long time, so the value is really there, but they may not be in everyone’s budget.
  • The feel isn’t for everyone. Some people may not like the bouncy nature of latex. This is a personal preference thing, so make sure you understand the type of feel that you like before jumping in and making a purchase.

How Latex Beds And Memory Foam Mattresses Compare?

  • Latex mattresses will typically be more breathable. The foam is more open-celled and not as prone to trapping heat as memory foam does.
  • Latex mattresses, on the whole, should be more durable than most memory foam mattresses because of the overall density of latex foams.
  • Latex will have more bounce and a sleeping on top of the mattress feeling, while memory foam will have a slow, sinking-in feeling that resembles quicksand. This is a personal preference type of thing, so one is not necessarily better than the other in this regard.
  • Memory foam will have better motion isolation, potentially making it better for couples.
  • Memory foam will have a bit better pressure relief in most but not all cases.
  • Latex will be a more green option than memory foam in almost all instances.

How Latex Beds And Spring Mattresses Compare?

  • Both mattress types will be breathable and should sleep cool throughout the night (no advantage of one type over the other)
  • Both mattresses will have some good bounce, which is a personal preference type of characteristic
  • Latex beds will offer a more “green” option, as spring mattresses usually come with a poly foam pillow top (made from petrochemicals)
  • Latex mattress typically should be more durable than the average spring mattress because of the density of the foams used in the construction

Latex Allergies

A lot of readers have asked if there is any truth that latex mattresses will be a problem for people with a latex allergy, but there is really no truth to that rumor. All credible studies show that people will not have a reaction to latex in their bedding in any cases. That is because the latex goes through a washing process that removes any proteins from the material that would potentially cause a reaction. For this and other reasons, people shouldn’t worry about having any sort of allergic reaction on latex bedding.

What To Look For In A Latex Mattress

When people look at a latex mattress, they will be exposed to an entirely new terminology compared to other types of mattresses. Key decisions will be natural vs synthetic/blend, Dunlop vs Talalay processing, unique warranty considerations, and density/ILD.

Natural vs Synthetic/Blend

The latex in a mattress can be all natural latex, synthetic latex, or a blend of natural and synthetic. Natural latex (from rubber trees) and synthetic latex (made through chemical process) actually feel quite similar, though in general natural latex mattresses are preferred.Generally, the decision here comes down to how pricey each type of blend is. People prefer the feel and eco-friendliness of natural latex, but even the most reasonably priced all-natural mattresses start at around $2000. If you can afford it, go natural but, otherwise, synthetic/blend will offer a pretty similar sleeping experience.

Dunlop vs Talalay

Dunlop and Talalay are two different types of latex processing, even though both come from a rubber tree; in general, the two types of processing result in different feels, with Dunlop leading to a firmer feel and Talalay leading to a softer feel.

I don’t think that one type of processing is better than another, although it is typically true that Talalay produces a more consistent latex. I recommend that you think about the feel of the mattress, rather than the processing method, to make your final decision because the differences aren’t very noticeable.

Latex mattress warranty

People will want to look at the warranty carefully (as with any mattress), but the thing to be concerned about with latex is compression/body impressions. This is the most likely issue that will come up with a latex mattress, so people should just be aware of the terms and how they expect the mattress to behave over time.

Latex Density/ILD

With latex mattresses, people will commonly hear two measures of the foam, the density (a measure of weight given volume) and ILD (a measure of firmness).

The density will be communicated in lbs and is a measure of weight per square foot. To generalize, the higher the density, in most instances the higher the durability of the foam.

The ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) is a measure of firmness, ranging generally from 14-38, meaning the higher the number, the firmer the mattress will be.

What are the benefits of latex mattresses?

Latex mattresses tend to be more durable than other mattress types. They are also very breathable, making them ideal for hot sleepers. They are also very responsive, making it easy to move around the mattress and switch positions.

Which are better, memory foam or latex mattresses?

This really depends on one’s personal preferences. Memory foam mattresses are probably for pressure relief and body contouring. Latex mattresses are more durable and breathable, and they can support more weight too.

How long does a latex mattress last?

A latex mattress should last a long time, potentially more than 10 years if it is all-latex. Latex mattresses are very durable overall.

Why are latex mattresses so expensive?

Natural latex is very difficult to source and it does not come from the United States. Because of this, the mattresses are going to have to cost more.

Do latex mattresses sleep hot?

Latex mattresses have very open-celled foam and are quite breathable. As a result, sleepers should not sleep hot.

Overall

If consumers think a latex mattress might an appropriate choice for them, one of these eight mattresses should be an excellent option to get better sleep. No matter what position people sleep in, they should be able to find the perfect fit with one of these mattresses. People should definitely check out the individual reviews for these mattresses if they want to go in depth on the construction and additional details.
