High vs. Low Bed: How High Should A Bed Be From The Ground?

There is a lot of information out there on picking the perfect mattress. The construction, firmness, and materials all play an important role in your sleep health. But what about your actual bed?Does how high your bed sits off the ground matter to your health?

Yes, theheight of your bed is importantbecause it affects your body physically as you get in and out of it every day. If you are not able to get up and out comfortably every day you may put additional strain on your body.

How high your bed should be from the ground will ultimately come down to your own height and your health status. For most, knee-level is about16”-24”off of the ground. At this height, people can usually put both their feet firmly on the ground and push off the bed with their knees bent.

Those with back and knee injuries and theelderlymay need to focus on choosing a bed thatsuits their physical needsover picking one based on esthetic details.

Typical Bed Heights

Platform Beds.

Platform Bed

With a mattress included, platform beds are around 18” off the ground. These beds arepopularat the moment because, aesthetically, they give a more modern or contemporary feel to a room but they dolimit your storage options.

Most platform beds have slats at the bottom which means mattresseswon’t require a boxspring, which typically adds additional height to a bed.

Some platform beds are only inches off the floor. They maynot be the best option for taller peopleor the infirm, because it may require you to get into acrouchingor squat-like position in order to get up.

Traditional Bed with Standard Frame

Traditional bed

Standard bed frames usuallyrequire a boxspringto place underneath your mattress, which raises the height toabout 25” from the groundto the mattress top. This tends to be a comfortable height for most, as it’s right around kee-level and is themost populartype of bed.

This type of bed is popular with rooms and houses that have a traditional feel and that havetaller ceilings, as the additional height helps fill up space.

Futon

Futon

Futons, asofa that doubles as a guest bed, tend to be about20”-21” off the ground, making them slightly taller than a Platform bed. Those with longer legs may need to crouch in order to get up.

Antique Beds

Antique Bed

Older beds, like vintage pieces orantique beds, tend to be higher off the ground –closer to 36” inches. While it may allow for a good amount of extra storage, it can beespecially difficultto get on or off the bed if you are petite, elderly or have bad backs or knees.

Other Considerations

Mattress Height:Mattresses come in all different materials, layers and as a results are different heights. Many mattresses tend to be around 10”-12” in height but can vary greatly. Pillow top mattresses or extra plush mattresses can add height to a mattress and to a bed overall and should be considered when deciding which bed to choose.

Feng Shui:Feng Shui is anancient Chinese artthat teaches you how to balance a space – like a bedroom.Location, position, and sleeping direction are all part of creating a positive space, according to Feng Shui philosophy. Bed height is important as well but should come at what isergonomically correctover everything else.

Aesthetic:Platform beds are consideredmore modernand contemporary, while standard bed frames and box springs give off amore traditionalfeel. Futons can begreat for smaller spacesand antique beds passed down from family to family can be extremely special. The style of your bed shouldmatch your tasteand should also be part of what you consider in a new bed before you make your purchase.

Bottom Line

Yes, you shouldconsider a lower or higher bed primarily based on your own height and your health statusbut also on the look and feel of the bed as compared to your own design aesthetic. Taller individuals may like beds with more height as it’s easier to get on and off without having to crouch.

Those who have physical injuries or the elderly may want to considercomfort above all else, as it will allow them to use their bed for as long as possible.

Edge Support

The degree to which the perimeter of the mattress supports body weight. In some cases, mattresses may sink when weight is applied. This sinkage, often called “roll-off”, affects how closely you might sleep to the edge of the bed.

The Nectar mattress offers better edge support than most all-foam mattresses at this price range due to its dense foam layers, though some owners have reported sinkage after less than one year of use.

Mattresses that are bouncier and more responsive tend to be better for sex, as they’re easier to change positions on. In contrast, unresponsive mattresses can cause couples to have trouble switching positions.

The Nectar mattress has some bounce, but — like many memory foam models — it may not be responsive enough for most couples.

How Is the Nectar Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Nectar Mattress has a cover made from a blend of TENCEL™ lyocell and cotton. Both of these materials are fairly breathable. The cover is also removable and machine-washable for easier cleaning.

Comfort Layers

The mattress has two comfort layers. The 1-inch top layer is made of quilted gel memory foam with a density of 4 PCF, and the 3-inch secondary layer is made of 3.5 PCF gel memory foam. These layers conform very closely to the body without sinking too deeply. The result is a noticeable body hug that can alleviate aches and pains, prevent pressure points from building, and improve spinal alignment for side sleepers.

The foam also distributes weight evenly and consistently, making the bed especially well-suited for heavier sleepers.

Transitional Layer

The mattress has a transitional layer of high-density memory foam that measures 1.75 inches. Most competing memory foam mattresses have transitional layers made of polyfoam. The Nectar’s added memory foam component enhances the body-hug sensation of its comfort layers without sagging too much.

Support Layers

The Nectar Mattress has a support core of 2.2 PCF high-density polyfoam measuring 5.25 inches thick. Along with the transitional layer, the polyfoam base provides a firm base for the softer comfort layers. The result is a balanced, medium-firm feel that conforms closely without compromising overall support.

Mattress Height

The mattress measures 11 inches thick. This is slightly thicker than the average mattress, making it a good option for people who struggle getting on and off shorter beds, but the Nectar is still considered a medium-profile mattress.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Nectar Mattress is an ideal option for sleepers who enjoy surfaces with deep contouring and cradling. This is largely due to the bed’s thick, four-layer design that includes memory foam comfort and transitional layers. Most sleepers settle into the mattress for a noticeable body-hugging sensation. This can alleviate discomfort for those with chronic pain, and prevent new aches and pains from forming.

Nectar Sleep advertises the mattress as “plush but highly supportive,” rating it as a 6 on the 1-10 firmness scale. Our testers agree with this assessment. This setting is optimal for many side, back, and stomach sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more. The mattress may be too firm for some lightweight sleepers, and as a result, they may not experience the same pressure relief as heavier individuals.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Nectar Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as verified owner and customer experiences with the mattress.

Durability

Nectar Sleep has been in business since 2016. Due to how new the company is, we’re basing our durability ratings off of the materials used in the bed, quality of construction, and owner experience data over time.

Given the use of dense, high-quality foams and solid construction, we expect the bed to be quite durable based on the average mattress lifespan of 7-8 years. While we recommend the Nectar for average to heavyweight sleepers, there is always the possibility of body impressions over time, so we recommend rotating the mattress regularly. Lightweight sleepers are far less likely to notice any body impressions over the lifetime of the mattress.

Motion Isolation

The Nectar mattress performed very well in our motion isolation tests. Both our internal testing team and our overnight sleep testers found they couldn’t feel any partner movement throughout the night. This is expected of memory foam mattresses with slower response foams, so our findings are on par with initial expectations.

Given that, we believe the Nectar is a great option for sleepers who are easily disturbed by movements on the bed’s surface.

Off-Gassing

We found that the Nectar had a distinct odor for a few days after unpacking, but eventually dissipated and wasn’t an issue after the initial few days. This is quite normal for a memory foam bed, but customers should keep this in mind when purchasing a Nectar mattress.

For a bit more explanation, off-gassing often occurs with newer mattresses because unpacking them releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. VOCs are relatively harmless but they carry a distinct odor that many liken to plastic or rubber.

Pressure Relief

Body conforming is a key strength of the Nectar Mattress. Our testing found that the two memory foam comfort layers absorb and cradle the body, conforming evenly to different areas and evenly distributing weight across the surface.

Our testers noted that the experience of sleeping on a Nectar is more like sleeping “in” versus “on” a bed, especially for heavier individuals. Those who enjoy that sensation will find the Nectar Mattress comfortable and supportive. On the other hand, people who prefer sleeping on – not in – a mattress may not be as satisfied with the bed.

Temperature Neutrality

Our in-house and external testing found that the Nectar mattress traps some heat throughout a night of sleep. In general, low- and medium-density memory foam layers sleep a bit cooler than higher-density memory foam. Nectar has both medium- and low-density foams in its comfort layers, making it a slightly cooler option than other memory foam competitors on the market.

The Nectar does use more breathable materials in its cover, TENCEL™ lyocell and cotton. These fabrics offer better breathability than other common cover materials, such as polyester or rayon.

Ultimately the Nectar performed better with temperature neutrality than a lot of all-foam beds out there, but customers should be aware that it does have the potential to sleep a bit warm throughout the night.

Edge Support

The Nectar mattress performed as we expected in our edge support testing. Like other all-foam mattresses, we found significant sinkage when sitting on or sleeping close to the edge. But when compared to similarly constructed mattresses, it did perform a bit better than average, which gave the mattress a slight leg up in our rating for this criteria.

Noise

The Nectar is silent. This is a common trait of all-foam mattresses. Noise from a mattress is usually associated with a coil system in the support core or comfort layers. Since the Nectar features an all-foam design, we found absolutely no noise issues with the bed. Coupled with superior motion isolation, the lack of noise makes the Nectar a great option for sleepers who are easily disturbed during the night.

The Nectar Mattress, like many competing memory foam beds, responds slowly and doesn’t have the bounce that is usually associated with innerspring and hybrid beds. Some sleepers find this sinkage makes switching positions difficult, which can make sex more challenging. That said, with deeper sinkage comes more traction, so if changing positions isn’t as important to you, the mattress can offer this as a benefit.

The Nectar’s construction makes it produce no noise and hence very discreet during sex. Better-than-average edge support also ensures couples can take advantage of the full surface of the mattress.

Sleeper Ratings

Now, let’s discuss our sleeper ratings for the Nectar Mattress.

The ideal firmness and thickness settings for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, the Tuck team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Our lightweight testers found the Nectar was fairly firm. While the mattress offered good overall support, these testers did not experience the same deep body-cradling and pressure relief as our heavier testers. Instead, lighter weight folks might find the Nectar has a floating feel, owing to its medium-firm build.

Lightweight sleepers typically prefer soft to medium-soft beds because they hug the body closely to alleviate aches and pains. That being said, our testers agreed that people weighing less than 130 pounds who prefer firmer beds will likely find the Nectar comfortable.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Our average weight testers found the Nectar very supportive. They experienced consistent body-cradling and pressure relief with little to no sagging. This was true across all sleep positions.

Sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds tend to prefer medium to medium-firm mattresses because they offer a balance of cushioning and support. Our testers’ findings for the Nectar were consistent with this general trend.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Our heavyweight testers also found the Nectar very supportive. They noted some sagging associated with the body-hugging feel of memory foam, but the transitional and base foam layers provided strong reinforcement for the bed.

Most heavyweight sleepers tend to prefer beds with medium-firm to firm settings. Softer surfaces often sag too much on the surface, resulting in uneven support, and the beds are more vulnerable to heavy sinkage along the edges. Although there are firmer beds on the market, our testers believe the Nectar is a good option for heavier people who prefer mid-level firmness settings.

Heavier sleepers also tend to prefer mattresses with thicker comfort layers because they make getting on and off the bed easier. The Nectar has roughly 4 inches of comfort layer foam, which is reasonably thick and may be more suitable for heavier individuals.

How Does the Nectar Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

Comparing models is a crucial aspect of mattress shopping. Below, you’ll find how the Nectar Mattress stacks up against four competing models with similar designs or components.

Nectar vs. The Casper

The Nectar and the Casper are both designed with pressure-relieving memory foam comfort layers and a high-density support system for added stability. They also isolate motion transfer very well and sleep fairly cool compared to other all-foam beds.

However, the Casper is somewhat softer with a medium (5) feel. Lighter people may experience more body-cradling and pressure relief, but heavier individuals may find the bed sags a bit too much. The Casper is reasonably priced given its high-quality design, but also more expensive than the Nectar. For more information, check out our Nectar vs. Casper Mattress Comparison.

Nectar vs. Leesa

The all-foam Leesa is another bed that shares several similarities with the Nectar. Both mattresses have mid-level firmness, and while the Leesa is slightly softer, overall support for both beds is fairly consistent across different weight groups and sleep positions.

The Nectar and Leesa also have comparable designs, including memory foam comfort layers, high-density support systems, and TENCEL™ blend covers. The Nectar costs less than the Leesa, thus making it the higher-value option, but both beds offer high-quality construction at a reasonable price-point. Read more about these two beds in our Nectar vs. Leesa Mattress Comparison.

Nectar vs. Tuft & Needle

The T&N Mattress from Tuft & Needle is constructed differently than the Nectar. Rather than memory foam, the T&N features standard polyfoam in its 3-inch comfort layer and high-density base. Although polyfoam does not cradle the body like memory foam, the T&N Mattress alleviates pressure for most sleepers and isolates motion transfer very well.

Both beds have a similar medium-firm feel. Like the Nectar, the T&N Mattress sleeps fairly cool compared to all-foam competitors. And while the Nectar costs more than the T&N Mattress, each bed offers exceptional quality at a very low price-point. Check out our Nectar vs. Tuft & Needle Mattress Comparison to learn more.

Nectar vs. DreamCloud

The DreamCloud is a mattress with a hybrid construction, rather than an all-foam model. It has multiple layers of memory foam over a bed of pocketed coils. Both mattresses have similar firmness ratings, although the Nectar is slightly softer and better suited to lightweight and average sleepers. The DreamCloud’s firmer feel and coil system gives it a stronger degree of support for averageweight and heavyweight sleepers.

Both mattresses use memory foam layers and perform similarly in a few respects, but their constructions give each distinct advantages. As a foam bed, the Nectar is better at relieving pressure, isolating motion, and absorbing noise. The DreamCloud’s hybrid build boosts its durability, as well as providing more edge support, and helping it to sleep cooler. The Nectar costs less than the DreamCloud, although both beds provide a great value for their price-points. Learn more about how these two beds stack up in our Nectar vs. DreamCloud Mattress Comparison.

Is the Nectar Mattress Right for You?

Buy the Nectar Mattress if you like:

  • A medium feel–The Nectar comes in only one firmness option, which is a medium firm scoring 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest, and it is suitable for sleepers of different firmness preferences and different weights.
  • A full memory foam mattress– The Nectar is a full memory foam mattress composed of the highest-quality memory foam layers. It offers the benefits of traditional memory foam while at the same time provides enough support and eliminates the feeling of being trapped in foam.
  • A very supportive mattress– As it has been already mentioned, this mattress offers enough support for all sleeping positions which makes it ideal for sleepers of different weights.
  • Responsiveness and bounce– The underlying gel foam and adaptive foam layers of the Nectar mattress provide the needed response when switching positions during the night and a nice degree of push-back and bounce ideal for late night amorous activities of couples.

You might not like the Nectar Mattress if:

  • You are a stomach sleeper –The Nectar mattress is an all foam mattress that may be too soft for stomach sleepers and cause spinal misalignment, so, if you prefer sleeping on your stomach, this mattress might not be an ideal pick for you.

Mattress Construction and Materials in the Nectar

The Nectar is a 11″ all foam mattress made up of 4 layers of various foams.

  • 1″ Top Comfort Layer– This layer is 1″ of quilted foam that is sewn into the cover that is designed to improve airflow and and relieve pressure points, while providing softness and a luxurious feel to the top, and it also provides pain relief.
  • 1″ Support Layer –This layer is 1″ of 4lb patented Lush Foam semi-open fast-recovery gel memory foam, which provides primary support and aids in cooling and comfort.
  • 3″ Transition Layer –This layer is 3″ of 3lb medical grade cooling gel embedded foam that acts as a transitional support layer between the upper and lower layers and also aids in cooling.
  • 6″ Foundation Layer– This layer is 6″ of high density foam that acts as the foundation and provides deep compression support.

Nectar mattress layers

The cover is made up of soft, long staple cotton that includes Tencel – a fabric more absorbent than cotton, softer than silk, and cooler than linen.

It is naturally bed bug resistant and actually circulates air throughout the upper layer to improve airflow and circulation.

Nectar mattress cover

The exterior of this bed is extremely soft and luxurious feeling, something we normally see only in mattresses costing 3-4x the cost of this one.

Nectar’s Firmness & Support

The Nectar mattress only comes in one firmness option which we rate it at a 6 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).

It feels like more of medium – firm mattress, in thatthe top comfort layer provides a soft, luxurious feel with the underlying support layers providing firmer support below.

With many mattresses, since I am a heavier sleeper, I tend to press through the top comfort layers and feel more of the support layers which are often harder and not as comfortable.

This isn’t the case with the Nectar, as I don’t immediately compress through the comfort layers and come to rest on base support layers.

Both Kaye and myself felt this bed initially was on the firmer side of the spectrum, but quite comfortabledue to the upper comfort layers and the luxurious cover materials. Over time, however, it breaks in and adapts to your body and becomes less firm and rather comfortable.

Nectar mattress profile view

The Nectar Sleep mattressprovides a good degree of support for a heavier sleeper like myself from the denser foam foundation layers combined with the top comfort layers.

In fact, the dense foam core of this mattress is one of the best out of all the beds we have tested, which is important for providing that deep compression support for the body.

We feltNectar does a great job of providing supportin all sleeping positions for both Kaye and myself sleeping as a couple.

As we are primarily side sleepers, we like beds that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomach or back.

The Nectar definitely provides the support we need for back and stomach sleeping, and surprisingly also provided a comfortable, supportive side sleeping environment which I was initially surprised that it would.

Back sleepers and stomach sleepers will also find the Nectar good for those styles as well, as it is firm enough to provide support and comfort for those sleeping styles without being too soft and causing excessive sinkage.

I usually prefer much softer top layers, often choosing softer memory foam layers that hug and mold to my hips and shoulders, butthe luxurious comfort layer in this mattress does a really great job at giving that same feeling.

The Most Comfortable Bed

The Nectarmattress is quite comfortable, withthe sumptuous top layer with the Tencel cover material providing a soft and supple sleeping environment, while the various foam layers below work to support and contour the body during sleep.

The layers of gel foam and adaptive foam provide the response needed to switch positions during the night and support my heavy bodyweight with ease, without causing too much movement during the night for Kaye when I get up or move around.

Nectar mattress corner view

The Nectar is also great for late night amorous couple’s activity as well (um.. SEX!), with the bed providing good push-back and bounce needed, without experiencing that sinking down into a hole feel that traditional memory foam feels like.

This bed is bothvery supportive as well as being very comfortable, and the premium materials all lend themselves to accomplishing this.

Sleeping Hot

The Nectar does a good job of not sleeping hotdue to the various gel-infused foam layers and the quilted foam within the cover that aids in air circulation.

As a couple who has tested over 75 different mattresses, this is a big deal for us and something that the Nectar does a great job at– preventing body heat buildup or causing sweating during the night.

Taken together, all of this technology does a great job ofkeeping this mattress quite cool.We did not experience the sticky feeling that we often do with foam mattresses in the least bit which was something we really were thankful for.

Mattress Sinkage & Motion Transfer

Motion isolation or transfer is how effective a mattress is at localizing or absorbing movement. Good motion isolation is great for couples to avoid waking each other up during tossing, turning or getting out of bed.

Some couples may not like zero transfer for such activities as sex. Memory foam has really good energy-absorbing properties and generally the thicker or more dense it is the better.

Nectar does a good job with minimizing sinkage, especially compared to most mattresses we have reviewed. As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent.

The fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress.

Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight.

I don’t sink down much at all when sitting on the Nectar, due to the high quality dense foam layers, which is impressive given that my heavier weight often causes me to “bottom out” when sitting on many models on the market.

Edge support is very good with this bed, and better than with many mattresses we have reviewed. The high density foams used in the construction do a good job at providing even support throughout the mattress, including the edge.

Nectar mattress, side profile view

I slept near the edge at times to test this and did not experience any of the “rolling off” the edges or having them become compressed under my weight.

Motion transfer was also excellent (minimal!)due to the all-foam construction, which is known to offer superior reduction in motion transfer between sleepers moving during the night.

This is often a big issue for us, when my heavier 230lb body moves or gets out of the bed and wakes Kaye up during the night (who as a result is often not happy!)

Kaye felt no disruption in her sleep when we changed positions during the night which made for happy sleeping for both of us 😉

Smell / Off-Gassing

Memory foam mattresses usually have the highest ratings for comfort, durability, and customer satisfaction. One of the only complaints owners have is about memory foam smell.

Luckily,Nectar Sleep gets high marks in this categoryfor creating a mattress that doesn’t have too much of a noticeable smell upon opening the box.

There was markedly less off-gassing and odor that foam mattresses usually have, which was rather surprising to us given the all foam construction. Any smell that was there dissipated quickly within 24 hours.

Nectar Mattress Review – Wrap up

The Nectar Sleep mattress is a great bed that combines multiple layers of high quality foam with a soft and extremely comfortable pillow-top cover.

The premium materials and excellent craftsmanship make ita luxury mattress that can compete with other beds costing much more, and one that surpasses many of these higher priced models.

If you’re looking for a good medium-firm feel and excellent support for all sleeping styles, albeit at a bit firmer feel, the Nectar is the right choice for you.

The use of the multiple layers of high quality, dense foam makes it have less motion transfer, sleep cool, and have good edge support which is a great feature for couples that share a bed.

The Nectar is a good choice for those that like the hug and contour of foam without feeling “stuck in a hole” like some foam models do, and that is a common complaint for people sleeping on memory foam – and certainly us!

We feel that the team behind Nectar really got things rightand has created a luxury foam mattress that delivers excellent support combined with extremely comfortable materials, at a price that can’t be beat.

If you are looking for a luxury model, you can’t go wrong choosing a Nectar mattress, which we really enjoy andhighly recommendas our top rated choice in our Top 10 Best Mattresses Guide

Review Outline

Our reviews tend to be pretty detailed. If you’re in a rush, you can use the links below to jump to the exact section you want.

YouTube Review Of Nectar Sleep

We realize a lot of consumers would rather watch a video than read a lengthy written article so we put together a short video for you that discusses who might like the Nectar memory foam bed-in-a-box.

However, as with any major purchase, it’s always a good idea to conduct more research rather than less. Keep reading to learn more about this popular online bed.

Nectar Shipping, Returns, Unboxing & Warranty

Before we jump into the meat and potatoes of this review, let’s first cover the side dishes (or in this case, all the company policies). The Nectar mattressships for freeand will arrive at your door rolled up and compressed in a protective bag. It’s important to note that we have received a couple complaints from consumers about the Nectar mattress taking much longer to arrive than anticipated, so keep that in mind. If you do order the bed, don’t expect it to arrive the next day. It may take a week or two to arrive.

Once you unroll the bed, you should itlet it decompressand fully inflate for about 24-48 hours before using.

Once the mattress arrives, though, Nectar gives you a365-night trial period to test out the bed. Yes, that is correct, a full year. That’s 265 days more than what most bed-in-a-box companies offer.

If you decide you don’t like the mattress for any reason during that time period, just contact customer service and they will arrange for someone to pick up the mattress from your home free of charge. The entire return and refund process shouldn’t take longer than one or two weeks.

Nectar also backs their mattresses with what they call their“Forever Warranty.”Basically, in years 1-10, the company will replace the mattress no questions asked if defects are found. In years 10+, the company will either repair or re-cover the bed and cover all transportation costs if manufacturing defects or material failures are discovered. For more details on the warranty, be sure to visit the Nectar’s website.

One last thing. I know this matters to some people. From what we can discern, Nectar mattresses are manufactured overseas, but the company does operate inspection facilities located in the United States. Also, it’s worth noting thatthe foams used in the mattress are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they are free from harmful chemicals like ozone depleters, mercury and lead.

How Much Is A Nectar Mattress?

Perhaps the best thing about the Nectar mattress is its price tag. It’s anaffordable memory foam bed. The mattress is about $100-$200 cheaper than what seems to be the industry average. Here’s how pricing breaks down by size.

SizePrice (MSRP)
Twin$499
Twin XL$569
Full$699
Queen$799
King / Cal King$999

What’s also nice about Nectar is that the company usually throws in two free pillows when you buy a new bed. Check the green discount box on the right hand side of the screen to see if that particular promotion is still live. You can also just go to NectarSleep.com for more info on discounts and pricing.

Mattress Sizes & Dimensions (King, Queen, etc.)

Nectar is available in all the normal sizes including twin all the way up to California king. Here’s a breakdown of the dimensions for each size:

  • Twin — 39″x 75″
  • Twin XL — 39″x 80″
  • Full — 54″ x 75″
  • Queen — 60″ x 80″

How Your Weight Affects The Mattress

As you progress through this review, it’s important to understand why your weight matters when mattress shopping. In short, no two people are the same and thus will have differing opinions on how particular mattresses feel. In our reviews, we write through the lens of an average sized person (150-250 lb), but things change slightly for people who fall outside that range.

For example, in general, heavy people (250+ lb)will feel like most mattresses are softer than what most other people think. This is because big folks place more pressure on a bed and will sink into the bed’s top layers more than the average person. On the other hand, lighter people (150 lb or less)will generally feel like most mattresses are a bit firmer than the average sized sleeper. Lighter people don’t place much stress on a bed, so they’ll sleep more on top of the mattress rather than sort of sinking into it.

Weight also plays a role in how warm or cool a mattress sleeps. As mentioned, heavier people will sink in more so there’s more of a chance the mattress will wrap or hug them and retain more heat, as opposed to lighter people who lay a little more flat on the top layers. Keep this mind as we talk about feel, firmness, and temperature regulation.

Nectar Mattress Design, Thickness & Topper

The Nectar mattress is an all-foam bed that is comprised of four layers and totals 11″ thick. It starts with a thick base layer of support foam. As the name implies, this layer serves as the foundation for the bed. Next is a layer of what the company calls its “Adaptive Hi Core Memory Foam.”

Don’t let the fancy name fool you, though—it’s basically just a dense layer of memory foam that pretty much acts as a transition layer from the support foam below. Next is a layer of gel-memory foam and then on top of that is another layer of gel-memory foam that is quilted into the cover. So in total, you havetwo layers of gel-memory foam on top for comfort and pressure relief.

Inside look at the construction of Nectar mattress

Wrapping the four layers of foam is a removable, tencel blend cover. It’s soft, comfortable, and sort of has a square design, which we think gives the mattress a premium look.

Nectar has a quilted cover with gel memory foam inside

Although the cover is technically removable, it’s recommended you do not remove it and machine wash it. Instead, if you happen to spill something on it or you have an accident (red wine, anyone?), you should just spot clean it with water and a dab of mild detergent.

Our Estimates For Firmness And Feel

As you can imagine, having three layers of memory foam, this bed has adistinct, dense memory foam feel. However, it’s a slightly different memory foam feel than a lot of other beds in that it’s actually quite firm at first. When you lay down on the bed, you don’t immediately sink down.

Rather, it’s more of a process. It takes about 4-6 seconds for the mattress to soften and the memory foam to contour around your body’s shape. Bottom line, we think it’s a very comfortable mattress. If you like the feel of memory foam, we’d bet good money you’d enjoy this bed.

Since it is a somewhat unique memory foam feel, it’s difficult to grade the firmness of the bed, but if pressed, we’d say it’saround a medium to medium-firm on the firmness scale. We think the mattress provides a pretty good balance between pressure relief and support, all things considered.

Is Nectar A Bed For All Sleeping Styles?

In short, yes, we see Nectar as a suitable bed regardless of which position you favor during the night. Let’s begin by discussing side sleepers first.

We thinkside sleepers will be just fineon this mattress. As discussed above, don’t let the initial firmness fool you. You slowly sink into the mattress and the top layers do a good job of cradling your hips and shoulders. All in all, the bed provides a good amount of pressure relief. Remember, the bed will also get softer over time, and will feel softer in warmer rooms.

Good amount of pressure relief for side sleepers

The only caveat we’d add is for extra petite sleepers. People who weigh around 100 lb might not sink in enough to truly experience all the pressure relief the top memory foam layers have to offer. If you want a bed that is great for petite side sleepers, make sure to check out our guide to the Best Soft & Plush Mattresses.

We also contend that, for a budget mattress, Nectar provides more thanadequate support under your hips, trunk, and lower back. You sink into the mattress, but not to the point where your spine is no longer properly aligned.

Great for back and stomach sleepers

Overall, we think the Nectar mattress is a great option for people who spend a lot of time on their back or stomach. Generally, these types of sleepers prefer mattresses that land on the firmer side of the spectrum and Nectar definitely fits the bill. If you’re looking for an even firmer bed, however, you can check out our list of the Best Firm Mattresses.

Given all that we discussed above, you can probably guess what we’re are going to say about combination sleepers, but I’ll save you the trouble. Yes, we thinkthis mattress is ideal for all kinds of sleepers.

However, keep in mind that since the bed does use multiple layers of memory foam, sleepers who are constantly switching positions may find itrequires a little more effort to switch from their back to their stomach, for example. Overall, this really isn’t a big deal. It’s pretty common with memory foam mattresses.

Is Nectar A Bed For Small & Average Size People?

Yes. In fact, it’s probably best for average and petite sized individuals. Average sized people (like Slumber Yard team members Matt and Jeff) find the mattress very supportive and accommodating. Smaller sized folks will like the bed as well, but keep in mind, it will feel slightly firmer to people who weigh less than 150 lb.

Is It Also A Viable Option For Heavy People?

This is a tough one to answer. On one side of the coin, you could argue that Nectar is a good choice since it’s thicker and a little firmer than the average all-foam bed-in-a-box. Generally, the thicker and firmer a mattress is, the less likely a big sleeper will sink in to the point where they lose proper alignment or even bottom out the bed.

On the other side of the coin, you could easily argue that aheavy person should go with a bed that contains coilsinstead, which is a very valid argument. Coil/spring mattresses are more supportive than dense foams and are also just more durable over the long haul. If pressed, we’d have to agree with the coil argument.

We pretty much always recommend heavy people go with a hybrid or innerspring bed. However, if you are dead set on an all-foam bed, the Nectar mattress is one of the better options out there.

What About Couples Who Share A Bed?

Two factors that are important for couples to consider are motion isolation and edge support. We are happy to report that the Nectar mattress performs well in both categories.

The bed does agood job of deadening movement. It passed our tests very easily. This subject is important for people that share a bed with a person that is constantly moving, whether they’re switching sleeping positions, rolling over to turn off the light, or getting up to grab a midnight snack.

The less movement that is transferred from one side of the bed to the other generally translates to a peaceful night of the sleep for both partners.

The Nectar mattress also providespretty decent edge support for an all-foam bed. A lot of hybrid and innerspring beds are better in this department, but the Nectar is still pretty solid, all things considered. As you approach the edge, there’s very little compression and you won’t feel as if you are going to slip right off.

Nectar holds its own along the edges

This particular situation comes into play a lot when one person likes to hog the middle of the bed, leaving the other person sort of stranded in a small area near the perimeter.

Not Hot Or Cold—Right In The Middle

Generally, we rate beds as either warm, cool, or neutral. In Nectar’s case,we’d give it a neutral designation. Histrionically, memory foam is known for retaining heat and sleeping warm. However, since Nectar uses gel-memory foam and it’s fairly firm, we don’t think it’s going to be an issue.

Bottom line, we don’t think you’ll heat up at night nor will the bed do anything special to keep you sleeping cool. Of course, this somewhat depends on your weight. Super heavy folks who sink in more than the average person and may find the mattress hugs them and retains a little more of their natural body heat.

Additionally, it’s important to realize that your mattress isn’t everything when it comes to sleeping temperature. There are a ton of other external factors that affect how warm or cool you sleep. I’m primarily referring to factors like what climate you live in, how often you run your air conditioner and whether you use an electric blanket.

Nectar Mattress Review: Verdict

Overall, we really like the Nectar mattress. For the price you pay, we think it’s an excellent value. In fact, we think so highly of the bed, it even made a few of our Best Lists. Obviously though, if you’re going to get this bed, you’ll have to really like the feel of memory foam.

What Makes The Nectar Mattress Special?

Shopping for a new mattress online these days can be a nightmare (pun intended). There are hundreds of choices, different types of foam and confusing advertisements. As such, you might be wondering how Nectar fits into the big picture. In our opinion, here’s what makes the Nectar mattress unique.

  • Price– The Nectar mattress is one of the most affordable memory foam beds on the market. The fact that you can snag a queen size bed and two pillows for less than $800 is pretty awesome.
  • Memory Foam Feel– If you like the feel of memory foam, it’s tough to beat Nectar. The bed uses three separate layers of memory foam, which makes for a soft, yet supportive sleeping surface.
  • 365 Night Trial Period & Forever Warranty– The company is giving you a full year to test the bed! That’s crazy. There’s only a handful of bed-in-a-box companies that offer the same amount of time. For reference, the industry standard is a 100 night trial period and a 10 year warranty.
  • Accommodates A Variety Of Sleepers– We like that the Nectar mattress works for all types of sleepers. It doesn’t matter whether you spend the majority of time on your side, back or stomach.

The Company’s Adjustable Base

The mattress is also compatible with adjustable bed frames, including the Nectar Adjustable Base. Here’s a look the mattress/adjustable base combo.

What the mattress looks like on Nectar’s adjustable bed frame

Nectar also tends to offer promotions if you get both the bed frame and mattress together. These sorts of bed frames can make watching TV and reading more enjoyable while you’re laying on your mattress.

How Is the Nectar Lush Constructed?

Cover

The Nectar Lush’s cover is crafted from a blend of polyester, nylon, and spandex. The material has a very soft and stretchy feel. It is also designed to wick away body heat and sleep cool.

The cover can be unzipped and removed from the mattress for cleaning. Nectar recommends spot-cleaning with mild detergent and/or hand soap if staining occurs.

Comfort Layers

The mattress has a 3-inch comfort layer of gel-coated memory foam. The material has a low density of 3.5 PCF (pounds per cubic foot), meaning the material is fairly breathable but also lacking in durability.

The memory foam has a medium feel. Most sleepers experience deep body-conforming and the bed is best suited to people who weigh 230 pounds or less.

Transitional Layer

A 2-inch transitional layer of 2.5 PCF polyfoam is located beneath the comfort layer. This component acts as a buffer for sleepers by preventing them from sinking too deeply into the mattress and coming into contact with the support core, which has a very dense and firm feel.

Support Layers

The Nectar Lush has a 7-inch support core of high-density polyfoam. This layer stabilizes the entire mattress to keep sleepers on an even plane and minimize deep sagging. The base foam is also intended to reinforce the edges, but as we learned during our testing, perimeter support for the mattress is fair at best (for more information, check out our edge support analysis in the ratings breakdown).

Mattress Height

The Nectar Lush measures 12 inches thick, making it a high-profile mattress. The above-average height ensures enough room for a deep comfort layer without sacrificing support from the transitional and base foam components. As a result, the mattress conforms to a noticeable extent but sleepers won’t sink too deeply.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Nectar Lush has a medium feel that corresponds to a 5.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. The memory foam comfort layer conforms rather closely to sleepers and the material is not very responsive. This creates a feeling of sleeping “in” – as opposed to sleeping “on” – the mattress.

The Nectar Lush also feels more temperature-neutral than many competing memory foam mattresses. The low-density memory foam is fairly breathable, while the cover is designed to wick away body heat from sleepers to keep them cool.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take an in-depth look at our performance ratings for the Nectar Lush. Each rating is based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as other factors.

Durability

The Nectar Lush was first unveiled in 2020. We have not had enough time to evaluate this model against the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Therefore, our durability rating for the Nectar Lush is based on its quality of materials and construction, along with Nectar’s overall reputation.

We estimate the Nectar Lush will perform for about six and a half to seven years before a replacement mattress is needed. This expected lifespan is on par with that of the average memory foam model. The Nectar Lush has a robust support system that keeps the mattress fairly stable. However, the low-density comfort layer is not particularly durable, and owners may notice body impressions developing over time – especially as the bed nears the end of its lifespan.

Owners can protect their Nectar Lush from wear and tear by rotating the mattress head-to-foot every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

To evaluate the Nectar Lush for motion isolation, we asked two sleep testers to lie side-by-side on the mattress. One tester moved around while the other felt for motion transferring across the surface. The Nectar Lush earned excellent ratings during these tests. The comfort layer isolated motion very well and neither tester felt any transfer.

Memory foam mattresses like the Nectar Lush typically excel at motion isolation because their comfort layers absorb movement and respond slowly to the body, eliminating transfer in the process. Mattresses made with latex, coils, and other, more responsive materials do not reduce as much transfer.

Off-Gassing

Our testers noticed some off-gassing odor when unboxing the Nectar Lush. However, these smells had mostly dissipated when they re-evaluated the mattress a few days later. The bed’s low-density comfort layer does not trap unwanted smells like the higher-density memory foam found in some competing models. We don’t expect owners to face any major, odor-related issues with this mattress.

Pressure Relief

To evaluate the Nectar Lush for pressure relief, we asked our testers to lie down on a sensory pad that monitors pressure build-up in the shoulders, hips, and other sensitive areas of the body. The testers also shifted positions to see if pressure increased or decreased when lying on their sides, back, or stomach.

The mattress conforms rather closely to sleepers due to the medium feel. This makes it particularly well-suited to side sleepers, who often need extra cushioning to align their spines and reduce pressure points. The Nectar Lush is also a good choice for sleepers in the average and lightweight groups, whereas the mattress may feel a bit too soft for those who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Temperature Neutrality

The Nectar Lush features a low-density comfort layer and a cover designed to wick away body heat from the sleeper’s body. Thanks to these components, the mattress offers better-than-average temperature neutrality and sleeps fairly cool. However, some sleepers may still feel warm due to the bed’s all-foam construction.

Edge Support

Our testers evaluated the Nectar Lush for edge support by sitting along the perimeter as an owner might do when getting in and out of bed. The testers all noticed significant sinkage when seated on the edges, indicating a lack of support. The high-density foam is fairly firm and durable, but it cannot withstand compression as well as coils, or even latex.

The testers also took turns lying near the edges of the mattress to check for feelings of “roll-off.” None of the testers felt very stable lying along the perimeter – especially when changing sleep positions.

Noise

The Nectar Lush was virtually silent during all of our evaluations, even for tests that required testers to move around on the surface and/or change positions. This is a common characteristic for all-foam beds. Other mattresses produce noise due to certain internal components not found in all-foam models, such as the coils used in hybrids and innersprings, or the motorized air chambers in airbeds.

The Nectar Lush’s noise-free design, coupled with its excellent motion isolation, makes the mattress ideal for co-sleepers – particularly if they awaken easily due to their partner’s movements.

The Nectar Lush conforms to sleepers rather closely. For couples, this means decent traction during sex. However, the memory foam will likely sag a bit and hinder movement – especially when changing positions – and the bed’s weak edge support prevents couples from using the entire surface of the mattress.

Although preferences vary by couple, most consider hybrids and innersprings the best mattresses for sex. These models have responsive, bouncy surfaces that provide freedom of movement for couples, and many also conform to sleepers to ensure good traction.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, the Tuck team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Overall, our lightweight sleep testers felt very comfortable on the Nectar Lush. Side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds noted ample cushioning for their shoulders and hips, which helps align the spine and alleviate pressure points. Back sleepers also liked the mattress thanks to its mid-level firmness, which ensures a combination of close body-conforming and even support.

Stomach sleepers in this weight group also gave positive ratings to the mattress, but they noticed more sagging that affects how supportive the mattress feels. Many people carry a large amount of weight in their midsection, and sleeping face-down can cause the body to sink excessively. Therefore, discomfort among lightweight stomach sleepers can partially be attributed to their sleep position.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Average weight sleepers also generally like the Nectar Lush. As with their lightweight counterparts, side sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds noticed good cushioning for the shoulders and hips, and the mattress did not sag too much. Back sleepers also experienced even support, which is largely due to the bed’s robust support system.

Stomach sleepers felt some sagging around the midsection, so their ratings were not as favorable. However, the Nectar Lush’s medium-feel memory foam conformed to the rest of their bodies reasonably well.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Generally, our heavyweight testers found the Nectar Lush a bit too soft. That said, some positions felt more comfortable than others. Side sleepers, for instance, felt some loss of support around the hips but otherwise the mattress provided decent body-conforming. Back sleepers noticed some sagging, as well, but they did not sink too much.

Stomach sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds gave the mattress lower ratings than other testers in their weight group. The mattress sagged excessively around the midsection. Over time, this can lead to neck and shoulder pain for stomach sleepers. Beds with firmer surface and/or stronger support systems tend to be the best options for heavier individuals who use this position.

How Does the Nectar Lush Compare to Other Beds?

We encourage all mattress shoppers to compare different brands and models in order to determine the most suitable option for them. In this next section, we’ll see how the Nectar Lush stacks up against the flagship Nectar Mattress and some similarly constructed models from competing brands.

Nectar Lush vs. Nectar Mattress

The flagship Nectar Mattress is constructed with three layers of memory foam over a high-density base. The mattress measures 10 inches thick and has a medium-firm feel, giving it a lower profile and a firmer feel than the Nectar Lush, but sleepers still experience body-conforming and a feeling akin to sleeping “in” – as opposed to “on” – the mattress.

For other performance categories, both Nectar models have earned comparable ratings. The mattresses alleviate pressure very well for sleepers in the average weight group. The Nectar Mattress also reduces pressure fairly well for heavier individuals, while the Nectar Lush is better suited to those in the lightweight group. These models also sleep fairly cool thanks to their low-density comfort layers, and isolate motion very well.

The Nectar Mattress costs a bit less than the Nectar Lush, and both models qualify for the same 365-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty. People who feel most comfortable on firmer beds should consider the Nectar Mattress, while the Nectar Lush is a better choice for sleepers who prefer softer mattresses.

Nectar Lush vs. Bear Pro

The Bear Pro shares many similarities with the Nectar Lush. Both models are built with pressure-relieving comfort foams and offer mid-level firmnesses. The Bear Pro also has a specialty cover made with Celliant fabric, a material designed to convert the sleeper’s body heat into infrared energy and transmit it back into their body for better tissue oxygenation and increased blood flow.

Like the Nectar Lush, the Bear Pro measures 12 inches thick and has a 7-inch high-density foam support core. Most sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less experience adequate body-conforming without sinking too much, but heavier individuals may find the mattress a bit too soft. Both of these models also excel at motion isolation and sleep fairly cool compared to other all-foam models.

The Bear Pro has a below-average price-point, making it a good value pick, while the Nectar Lush is a bit expensive for a memory foam mattress. The Bear Pro is more geared towards athletes and other physically active people due to its Celliant cover, but people who prefer a little more body-conforming from their mattress should opt for the Nectar Lush instead.

Nectar Lush vs. The Casper

The Casper Mattress is a mixed-foam model with polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers, along with a high-density foam support core. The mattress offers a medium feel. However, the polyfoam makes the surface bouncier and more responsive compared to the Nectar Lush.

The Nectar Lush and Casper Mattress have earned similar ratings across most performance categories. Shared strengths of both beds include excellent motion isolation, great pressure relief for people who weigh 230 pounds or less, and no noise when bearing weight. These models also sleep somewhat cool compared to other all-foam mattresses, but edge support for either bed is fair at best.

The Casper costs less than the Nectar Lush but the latter is backed with a longer sleep trial and warranty. Prices aside, the Casper Mattress provides a more responsive feel that is optimal for sleepers who do not enjoy the deep body cradle of memory foam. The Nectar Lush, on the other hand, is best suited to those who like sleeping “in” – and not “on” – their mattress.

Nectar Lush vs. Loom & Leaf

The Loom & Leaf by Saatva is a luxury mattress built with two memory foam layers over a high-density foam support core. Like the Nectar Lush, the Loom & Leaf responds slowly to the body and conforms closely, resulting in a feeling of sleeping “in” the mattress.

Customers can choose from two firmness options for their Loom & Leaf, medium (5.5) or firm. The former has a very similar feel to the Nectar Lush’s surface, while the latter is noticeably firmer and better suited to heavier individuals. Both mattresses excel at motion isolation, but the Nectar Lush absorbs less body heat from sleepers and feels a bit cooler as a result.

The Loom & Leaf and Nectar Lush have very comparable price-points. The latter comes with a 1-year sleep trial and a lifetime warranty, while the former qualifies for free White Glove delivery anywhere in the contiguous U.S. For those whose who prefer firm mattresses, the Loom & Leaf will likely be the most suitable option, but these models are very similar in most other performance areas.

Nectar Lush vs. MemoryLux

The MemoryLux by WinkBeds is another 12-inch model constructed with a memory foam comfort layer over polyfoam transitional and support layers. The mattress also has 2 inches of polyfoam tufted into the cover, ensuring good padding for lighter individuals and side sleepers.

The MemoryLux is available with a medium-soft (4), medium-firm (6), or firm (7) feel. This selection ensures most sleepers can find a suitable model regardless of their body type, sleep position, or comfort preferences. The mattress also has a zoned transitional layer that feels firmer beneath the sleeper’s lower back and hips, resulting in more enhanced support. However, the Nectar Lush has a thicker base layer that keeps sleepers on a more even plane and sags less. For other performance categories, such as motion isolation and noise, these models have earned comparable ratings.

The MemoryLux is fairly pricey for a memory foam mattress. Some shoppers will undoubtedly choose the Nectar Lush due to the lower cost, but the MemoryLux is a better option for anyone whose preferences fall outside the Nectar Lush’s medium feel.

Nectar Lush vs. T&N Mint Mattress

The T&N Mint Mattress from Tuft & Needle is an all-polyfoam model that measures 12 inches thick and has a medium-firm feel. Polyfoam is more responsive than memory foam, and the mattress provides a combined feeling of both sleeping “in” and sleeping “on” the surface. The Nectar Lush, on the other hand, offers more of a sleeping “in” feel for owners.

The T&N Mint Mattress also has a fairly breathable comfort layer made of lower-density foam, but the bed can trap heat for some. Our testing also finds the mattress is most comfortable for people who weigh 230 pounds or less. In terms of motion isolation, the T&N Mint Mattress reduces most transfer but the Nectar Lush outperforms in this category due to its less responsive surface.

The T&N Mint Mattress is very low-priced, making it more of a value pick compared to the Nectar Lush. However, the mattress does not provide the same levels of body-conforming and pressure relief due to its all-polyfoam design. Those who like close conforming and/or experience constant pressure issues may want to consider the Nectar Lush instead.
