What does that mean about their selection? They have a wider selection than most other local stores or online storefronts, which is a big win for customers.

But with that selection comes ahidden truth:

The prices are oftenmuch higher than buying direct from the manufacturer.

Mattress Firm does have a price-match guarantee, which shoppers appreciate. However, customers will have to be vigilant. This is because Mattress Firm has topay its salespeople commissions and markup product from their mattress brand partners.

Very happy with this mattress set. Good quality and great value.

This mattress was fantastic in the store. We thought we had finally found a mattress under $600 that fit all of our needs but we were wrong. We’ve had this mattress for a month and a week and already there are deep divots where our bodies lay at night.

Nice looking- good support-would buy again. Knowledgeable salesman.

I bought for a guest room. Seems to be nice no complaints from our guests yet.

Brought this mattress a month ago, so comfortable. Really enjoying.

My sales person was very knowlegable and helpful. Thank you! I’m very happy with my mattress.

I get this for $438 with tax, including tax, box and delivery free. For that price i think its good.

Within a week this mattress started to form dips in places you sleep. The twin sample felt convincing. I believe this mattress has a weight maximum of 250 pounds. If you have someone sleeping with you that weigh more than that you will have trouble with this mattress

I bought this cause I needed a new mattress and it was great but after a couple months I feel every spring

I purchased this for Christmas for my son the best gift everrrr.

I bought this before Christmas for my guest bedroom. My guests were not impressed and did not sleep well. I will be taking this back for a refund.

I needed to replace the old mattress due to hurricane Irma and this mattress was a great price. and included box springs. firm is just about right and perfect for our upstairs guest bedroom

This mattress was a gift to our son. He loves it and said he has slept like a baby since receiving this mattress. It was also higher than his old mattress, which is great because he is 6’3" tall.

I bought this mattress a couple weeks ago now and I am so glad I did. The mattress is exactly what I was looking for: firm, yet not rigid. This mattress has a springiness to it that provides the perfect mixture of support and comfort. The chronic back pain I was experiencing with my old mattress completely vanished after just two nights on this mattress. I would definitely recommend this mattress to anyone who is looking for a fabulous, reasonably priced, firm mattress.

sorry i cant write a review i am so comfortable i am still sleeping on my new mattress.

I bought this on black Friday. The people there were really nice. I didn’t feel rushed. The delivery was made on time and professionally. I have been sleeping on it for 25 days now. And so far, it is very comfortable. I’ve been happy waking up on my mattress.

I bought this a month ago and I can say this bed is amazingly comfortable. Although I wasn’t use to a firm mattress I love how fast I go to sleep when I get into bed. It’s firm but not too hard where you need to buy a mattress pad, which I was considering.

I bought this mattress for my 5 year old son and he loves it. Great quality mattress.

Went in about a month ago to Purchase a new mattress. Salesman Steven was very efficient and nice In helping me make my decision. I’m very happy i bought from mattress firm delivery was fast and awesome. Great Stuff from Mattress Firm will go there again for another one in Ten years lol.

My hubby selected this for his ache back, found it helpful but is not happy that it has "conformed" too much for his body, he feels it’s defective, which we will need to be having checked out. by Mattress Firm, ANYONE UNHAPPY BE SURE YOU KNOW YOU HAVE A PLUS 120 DAY RETURN REPLACE POLICY AND DO NOT FORGET MFGR WARRANTY GUARNTEE BEYOND THAT, OTHERWISE YOUR INVESTMENT FOR 10 + YEARS OF QUALITY SLEEP IS THROWING YOUR MONEY AWAY STAY IN TOUCH WITH YOUR STORE REP AND COMPANY MFGR

I brought a mattress and the service was very good.

Bought sight unseen. Added a pillow top cover and it is just wonderful. Now to see,how it lasts!

I just saw it went on sale for $400 for a queen set yesterday Dec 4 , 2017 and today I already regret it , when you sit on it it’s already sagging badly and I can’t imagine a few months later how it’s gonna look like !! I’m sure will return it and exchange for a better set for my son .

So comfortable and at the same time giving great contour support.

I bought this mattress unexpected and it’s the best thing I did. First night I slept on this mattress I went to sleep so fast I didn’t remover going to sleep.

This mattress is the most comfortable mattress I have ever had, if you purchase it you will not be disappointed. it’s great mattress to lay down in after a intense workout to just rejuvenate your body

the mattress and deliver was great! the 35 emails/texts/calls asking how my mattress is has gotten ridicules. Please STOP SENDING ME MAILS & TEXTS

We were in desparate need of a new bed, as usual, Beautyrest is awesome!

I bougth this mattres a month ago to my son, he feells very comfortable

I recently traded in my “high end” mattress for this one and couldn’t be happier. The back pain is been having for months is entirely gone, and I’m sleeping straight through the night. Truly a game changer!

I had this mattress about 3 months and it became less supportive and lost its shape and support. I do not recommend this mattress. The warranty did allow me to exchange it for a replacement, but I upgraded to another type.

I love my new mattress and love sleeping like a baby every night. A new mattress makes a big difference on your body.

This is a wonderful mattress. I am very pleased to recommend this mattress to all who enjoy a firm and comfortable supportive rest.

Great feel, awesome comfort. Sleeps great. I purchase 3 of the same set.

Bought this at the Labor Day sale and couldn’t be happier with it. Just the right amount of firmness but never hard. The only problem is that sometimes it feels so good that I don’t want to get out of bed!

The mattress is out of shape all ready had for a few months

We bought this for the guest bedroom and its perfect!

I bought just at a month ago. I lost everything in Harvey flood and was looking for something just to get by with. This mattress is already sagging and I have flipped it twice. It will not last very long. I also bought a bed frame and when it was delivered, it was bent at the head. The delivery personnel did not want to take it back and told me it did not affect the set up. I cant see going back to this company.

The bed is very uncomfortable. I regret making this purchase.

I got two of these for my rental space- but I want them for my house too- so comfortable!

My friend and I both got beds, mine was a King and his was a Queen . and we’re both finding it so hard to get up and out of bed, probably due to the comfort of the bed, it’s a Great bed knowing you don’t want to get up. I only gave 4 stars because delivery guys came pass delivery time with no ahead phone call stating problem with being so late.

So happy with this film mattress! Hope we feel the same after a few more months.

Easy purchase, great product, price and delivery!!

I FEEL LIKE A PRINCESS ON THIS MATTRESS AND HAVE NEVER SLEPT BETTER. SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT YEARS AGO.

After about two weeks, I am waking up with no back ache. Thanks!

We bought this for our guest room. We bought 2 pillows for us and we love them. Also at your Campbell Blvd. Store Wayne was awesome. What a great person.

I have had this mattress about a month now and I love it!

I’m completely satisfied with this mattress. Love it!

This was purchased for my 4yr old daughter’s "Big Girl" bed. Somehow everyone else in the family ends up in her bed as well, it’s so comfy. and we have an IComfort! 🙂

Got the mattress one month ago ..Have not waking up not one time with a sore back or neck .. The mattress is super wonderful..

I am very happy with my matress it is very comftable.

This is an affordable mattress if you have back problems. It is firm and comfortable. The delivery came on time.

I ordered this mattress on Monday and it was delivered by Wednesday, so I am happy about the speed of delivery. However, after sleeping on the mattress for one night I am in the process of doing an exchange. Even though it’s going in the guest room if I hate, I’m sure guest will also.

I got this thinking it was going to be firm, but it’s definitely on the softer part. Th middle side goes down right away/ I am thinking of exchanging it. I have scoliosis and need a firmer bed. But overall it’s ok for now, but I know it won’t last long.

I bought this for a guest room and my guest was very comfy to sleep on this mattress.

I bought this mattress a month ago and I can’t complaint it has been wonderful for the money I paid for it. My back pain is not as crazy as before :))

It may be great for some but the mattress tends to form to your body and therefore leaves a hole in the mattress that you feel if you move. Ofc it goes away after a bit but it is noticeable and tends to wake me up when I move. solution you say. don’t move then. Lol

I bought at the Flower Mound location and the service was truly top notch, professional grade. Thank you

I bought this mattress over the memorial day weekend and thank goodness it had the 120 trial because it truly is not a firm mattress and within weeks my wife and i felt like we were right back in our old mattress of 8 years. Terrible mattress

Bought this a few weeks ago and it’s firm yet gives in just the right places. It’s not bouncy either, which is great when you are sharing a bed. I highly recommend!

I bought this mattress about a month ago and was extremely pleased with the delivery process! (I bought it in one city and had it delivered to another). The bed itself feels firmer than it did in the store. However, it lives up to one of its biggest selling points: it does not transfer very much motion which is great for when my partner stays for the night.

THIS IS A TERRIBLE MATTRESS, NOT FIRM AT ALL ITS SOFT. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

I bought this 8 months ago. it was great the first few months. Now, the mattress sinks in and I have major back issues from the bed. After a long day of working, you expect to come home and relax on the bed. my bed is the last place I want to be on. I don’t weigh a lot and for my bed to sink and cause so much back pain is ridiculous!! I wish MattressFirm had a one year guarantee because this mattress would be sent back!!

Bought this mattress a month ago for my 2yr old. He is loving his new " Big Boy" bed!

This mattress is super comfy, very supportive, and a great value.

I am enjoying this very firm and comfortable mattress. I am so glad I purchased. It was a bargain!

Good product and so was the mattress cover. A great deal in all

In less than 6 months the seems were already ripping. I had to have it exchanged and they wouldn’t let me upgrade. Feels very cheap and lightweight. Says the "regular" price is over $600 but it’s not even worth the sale price of $350. Stay away from this product.

My wife went into our local Mattress Firm here in Lafayette, LA. We were greeted by Barbara Lindon, she immediately found out what our preferences were in a new mattress. Her warm and opening personality made it easy for us after trying out a few mattresses to finally make a decision that suited us. Barbara worked with us according to our budget, but made sure we were totally satisfied with the choice made. Additionally, she told us of the 120 day period having the product in home and being totally satisfied that Mattress Firm would be the best choice in price and quality. Barbara did and excellent job!

I have just purchased my 4th mattress in the last 4 months. Three of these were for a vacation home remodel and one was for personal use. We worked with Shane at the mattress firm on Broadway in Portland Oregon. He was responsive, knowledgeable and very helpful. The mattresses in our vacation home ended up being too firm and he was very kind and helpful in making an exchange and being sure we were happy. I know several people who are mattress shopping and I have encouraged them to see Shane.

Mike, our sales rep was very helpful on helping us select the right mattress and no high pressure at all.

Worst delivery and service . I was sent a broken bed frame and the delivery guy told the warehouse that it’s broken. But they still asked him to deliver it to me. I rejected the delivery and rescheduled for next day. The driver came and seems he called me . I never got a call. I paid more that $1000 and it’s been a week that I am waiting for the mattress. I just moved from east coast with family and we are sleeping on floor . Forget about compensation, they are yet to deliver my mattres. Pathetic .

Purchased a mattress online for my elderly mother who lives in an assisted living facility. Asked specifically for a morning delivery as they close the facility at night and housekeeping/maintenance go home. Scheduled for 9am. On the evening before the delivery, I get a text stating delivery will be between 5-9 PM. So i call and tell them that was not the promised delivery time and too late for a delivery. They tell me the delivery people set their own schedule and I should not have been promised a morning delivery. I tell them to cancel the delivery. They say they will cancel, but the mattress is on the truck and refund will occur after they take it off the truck. I also call the next morning to confirm the order is cancelled. I ask them not delivery, the rep verifies "NO DELIVERY WILL BE ATTEMPTED". At 5PM I get a phone call from the delivery driver, I tell him the order was cancelled the night before. He says "Why did they send me all the way out here?", then hangs up on me. I call him back and tell him not to hang up on me, it’s not my fault your company sucks. So, lesson learned. This place may have good prices, but good luck getting the bed delivered at a reasonable time. If you do cancel, they will still try to deliver (probabaly at night). Don’t waste your time, order from Amazon.

My experience with this store started very positively. The sales lady Barbara was very insightful and willing to negotiate to get to a deal we were happy with which included a delivery within a matter of days. The delivery company arrived with the bed. They failed to use the “Red Carpet Service”, no booties or red carpets. They supplied a bed that had a large bubble in it due to the way it was stored during shipping. They were unable to identify that Mattress Firm had provided the correct headboard mounting brackets. There was a scratch on the remote for the base. During the delivery of the base and mattress they managed to damage the wooden floor in the bedroom. A scratch roughly 16 inches in length. From this point forward the communication from the Globe The Professionals Corp has been appalling. Failure to engage or acknowledge they were aware of the damage to the property. Everything has felt like I was working for them. There was a failed second delivery which also had a bubble in the bed. 3 weeks later and I am still waiting to get any sort of compensation or path forward towards the remediation of the damage caused during delivery. The communication with Mattress Firm has been on going but there has been multiple times where I have called to follow up and get a basic status of my order without rebuttal. After the second failed delivery they did do their best to reach out to ISerta to supply a new mattress but I am still yet to hear when I will actually receive this. Genuinely not one of these people who writes reviews of companies if I have bad service but at this point I feel so ignored and ill treated as a paying customer I can’t help but begin to try and steer people towards another supplier. It’s hard to know how they have gotten to be the largest mattress company ni the US with the standard of service and products I have been unfortunate enough to receive. I understand that there is cases where one or two things may go wrong, but once an issue is escalated beyond a normal sale there needs to be greater care and attention to ensure that the customer is not left in the dark and having to beg for a bed. Not like they gave it out for free. I will be using any other mattress firm going forward as will anyone I am come in contact with looking to make a purchase that is as important as a mattress.

we are long term customers at retail stores in exter pa. My mom got a king 10 yrs ago and her walls were scratched. I got a twin plush 4 yrs ago and and it was firm. 2nd mattress was determined defective my sleepy’s and third also sagged but i gave up/ Marcia told me she did not want me to go to Raymor and flanagan and she would take care of me with a new plush at 399 and no shipping to match R&F. she went on to say i got such a good price she had to charge for shipping. i went on line a week later and found Out i paid same as everyone and i was deciveved. It gets worse. I let marcia know i just had cancer surgery and i had 30 staples in my stomach and I needed a soft mattress and she viewed sleepy’s files and saw i had A PLUSH AND TOLD ME SHE WOULD SEND ME PLUSH. SHE ASKED ME IF I LIKED FIRM AND I SAID NO AND SHE SENT ME A FIRM. DOM TOLD ME SHE MADE A MISTAKE CAUSE SERIAL NUMBERS WERE ONLY ONE OFF AND WOULD GET AN EXCHANGE FOR FREE. I WAS CHARGED 100 AND I SAID INTERNET SAID IF I GIVE EMAIL I GET 50 OFF, BUT SHE GAVE ME 25 OFF NOT HONORING OFFERS AGAIN. I WAS CHARGED FOR SHIPPING A SECOND TIME BECAUSE I WAS SENT A FIRM AND I WAS BEING HELD HOSTAGE. I WAS IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION DUE TO CANCER SURGERY AND THIS MARICA DID MY TRANSACTION WITHOUT ME BEING PRESENT TO SIGN MY CREDIT CARD AND SHE SENT ME FIRM MATTRESS ON PURPOSE. THE FRAUD UNIT IN CREDIT CARD HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. WHAT IS REALLY SICKENING IS ON THE PHONE SHE SAID IT WOULD BE A SLEEPYS PLUSH AND MY MOM AND FRIEND HAD ME ASK ON SPOT IS IT A BRAND NAME. MARICA SAID OH YA ITS A BEAUTY REST AND AT THIS POINT I NOW UNDERSTAND I WAS MANIPULATED AND TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BECAUSE I WAS SENT A FIRM MATTRESS WITH OUT MY AUTHORIZATION . BOTTOM LINE IS MARICA IS SHADY AND SHE MAKES COMMISSIONS AND TALKS REAL FAST TO MAKE MONEY. NOT ONLY DID THEY LOSE LONG TERM CUSTOMERS THEY WILL GET SERIOUS BAD WORD OF MOUTH

bought it Friday at Venice, Florida store. Manager Nicholas Bell was. informed and helpful. I0 % veterans discount-

Czarr D Freeman From Dedham Store. He is the best! Understands what is talking about and very attentive. So happy with my purchase!

Our warranty claim was denied by Mattress Firm. When I pointed out that it met the requirements, they changed the answer to say it was out of the warranty period. Since I bought it at Mattress Firm and was going by their instructions, I found it odd. They said they are not responsible for what the store tells customers and would not provide a copy of the previous warranty information ( from when it was purchased). When I mentioned they were owned by the same company, they flatly denied it, when it is easily found online and the owners website. Either stand by your product or own up to its inferior quality, just don’t BS us. Deny, Deny and Deny. Similar plot line to the movie "the rainmaker".

I bought a new mattress right before my chemo started, because I knew I would be bed bound for several months. Within 2 months, the mattress started sagging & divots formed, causing severe back pain. I tried getting an pre-owned exchange, but when the delivery guys showed up, they claimed it was stained & refused to give me the other mattress. On top of it, the guy lied to me. The store manager is trying to be helpful, but he can’t get the company to give me the other mattress. I’m so angry that I spent $400 & the mattress I have is 100 times worse than my previous mattress. I’m contacting the CEO & head of customer service. This isn’t helping me recover from cancer.

Do not do business with mattress firm they are a total rip off. They are going out of business and filing bankruptcy. The products are horrible and they know it and are trying to sell them fast under false pretense and over priced. I purchased a mattress less than a year ago and it is falling apart. Sunken and slouching, I have to now go through the warranty department which is a hugh joke. I also purchased pillows from malouf who is another rip off with a hot and cold side. Needless to say not true and it sheds ever time I take the covering off to was it. Blue stuff everywhere! The lady mary who sold me this mess no longer exist and the store closed down. The other stores have people who are made and disgruntle because they know they are working for a junk furniture store. Buyer be very very very aware! Do not waste your money or you will be stuck trying to replace a piece of junk with another piece of junk.

Giving a one-star review only because a zero or negative star review is not an option! We bought a mattress and adjustable frame, as well as a hot tub from the sales representative. I don’t know if the hot tub is affiliated with Mattress Firm itself or not, but I will restrain my review to talking about the mattress and frame, along with the sales experience. First of all, if my review were to be about sales only, I confess my review would be positive. The guys were a bit pushy, but personable, and we spent a lot of money we otherwise would not have based on that experience in the information they gave us. However, we feel like we were lied to. First of all, we were guaranteed that the entire bed would arrive together at one time, and be assembled by their Personnel at that point in time. This did not happen. We received a giant troll of immense weight that the deliver slid onto our floor in the foyer, to leave for when the rest of the bed showed up. I am disabled and am not able to move this thing, so we have been trying not to trip on it ever since it was delivered nearly a couple weeks ago now. The plastic sheets around this role was extremely Dusty, Turin, and it looks like some rats or other animal may have puked on it. There may be p on it as well. This did not instill me with confidence, but I was hoping that the plastic sheath would protect whatever the contents are. It’s hard to tell. The first people who showed up to deliver the bed were astounded to find that we have cats. This, despite the fact that the entire time we spoke to the personnel he showed us the bed, we talked about our cats, and ask them to make sure that no one with allergies would be on the delivery team. Instead, the team that arrived were unprofessional and actually refused to install the bad because of the driver’s allergies. Note that this guy had giant gauges in his ears and seemed disrespectful the entire time. He pointedly kept looking over at my Bernie Sanders sticker on the door, and I got the feeling his discriminatory treatment was purely political. His partner was even worse, snickered and laughed, and would not look you in the eye. The person on the other end of the phone actually asked him to take pictures, and he told them on the phone that he could not take pictures of "a smell." The size is the breach in etiquette and privacy of actually asking the installers to photograph the interior of a client’s house, it wasn’t even relevant. Not to mention, I served in two of our military services, the US Marine Corps and the US Navy, and was a firefighter for 20 years where I also served as a Lieutenant, Advanced EMT, and Fire Marshal. I’ve been in countless homes across the United States and in my home state. While I will not claim to have the nicest house in the world, it’s certainly better than average. Not that that has ever mattered. I have never refused service to anyone in my career because of allergies, and would undoubtedly have lost my job, or worse, had I done so!! The company was also aware that we had cats, and one dog , from the outset, if this was something which might be problematic for any of their personnel. As for their demeanor, I was offended, hurt, and livid! I was actually rendered speechless at one point. My co purchaser contacted their representative after all of this, and we were assured that the bed would be delivered on Saturday, by their very best crew, that the offending delivery men had had complaints about them before, and that they would be fired.. It was not delivered on Saturday, and I highly doubt at this point that they even got rid of the ascending personnel oh, you were subcontracted in the first place! Now we’re being told that it will be sometime on Thursday. This is not acceptable, and I already dread dealing with whomever it is that shows up, if they show up. For context, my disability leaves me very little time each day where I can get up and around at all. I’ve already had three days stolen from me because of this, not to mention the physical pain it takes for me to get ready just to have them fail at their job or not show up at all , and I am at the end of my rope with this organization. This has been THE WORST experience I have ever had in my half a century plus time on this planet with any company, ever! At this point, I wish I had never done business with Mattress Firm, and, despite their continued assurances to the contrary, have lost the value of sleeping on the bed purchased for an extended time due to the company’s mismanagement, and horrible employee work ethic! My frustration has me at the point where I am considering legal representation. I am not a litigious man, so that shows just how badly I consider this whole experience to be. What started out as giddy excitement has turned into a horrible nightmare for both of us, and I have even had bad dreams after this experience. My recommendation to anyone considering buying from these people? Run away! Run as fast as you can!

Mattress Firm does not stand behind its products. (At least not my Purchase) Bought a new expensive mattress a year ago and the top has separated shifting about half a foot. Mattress firm refused with no explanation other than this is an except able defect.

Sales were fine. Product and warranty a joke. Puchased a Beauty rest hybrid twin x 2 for 2300 a piece. 1 is failing after 9 months. Can feel springs popping and moving when i roll. Went through their sham warrenty process. With pics and a video. They state it falls within their parameters. They said i can get a 3rd party inspection for $79. I agreed. Next email, they said no one in the area to do an independent evaluation but they gave me a 20% off coupon to purchase a new mattress from them. I will never do any business with mattress firm or buy beauty rest again. BUYER BEWARE. i was told by many people prior to buy a sleep number, but i didn’t and lost $2300. BUY A SLEEP NUMBER BED. DO NOT BUT FROM MATTRESS FIRM. They will rip you off…

They say you can return a mattress if you don’t like it for a 10% re-stocking fee, but that is a lie. My mattress did not fit my bed and they would not return or exchange it with something the appropriate size for my bed online. I bought the smallest height of mattress they had, but should have measured! You will not be able to return or exchange for something that will work for you. They also lied saying they didn’t have any other mattresses at other stores. Also, this mattress is so hot to sleep in. I didn’t turn my heater on last night and it got to 62 degrees in my house and I was so warm. It’s NOT a temper pedic either. DO NOT SHOP HERE!

Cancelation fee stay away

AVOID MATTRESSFIRM AT ALL COST. GO ANYWHERE ELSE. Back in 2013 we purchased a$500 mattress, nothing special just a mattress. It lasted us well until mid 2018. We started researching for a new one. Our thinking was maybe if we bought a higher end name brand we might actually get 15 years from it. We tried a ghost bed ( I loved it, Tim not so much) we returned it, no problems. Feb. 2019 we went to mattressfirm. We were the only people in the store. First should have been red flag was the attitude of sales clerk. Felt like we were a bother. After many questions, discussions of health issues. We decided on a $1500. Mattress. This was a huge investment for us. We discussed warranty, delivery, set up. About 4 months ago we noticed this mattress is in about the same shape our previous one was in at the 5 year use. My arthritis has gotten so bad I cannot walk upright or without support. I had friends come flip the mattress, and have had a bit of relief. Called Mattressfirm to see about warranty. 2 options $80 for their person to come out, or we can strip bed ( note I had to have people come to that) and take photos. But input was added in phone conversations oh you did not purchase new box springs. Your warranty is null and void. after 2 phone calls and basically the salesman saying we Did discuss the new box springs( no he did not) I guess we are getting nothing done as the last phone call..2 days ago. The salesman said he would talk to his supervisor and get back to us. WHATEVER you do NEVER,EVER purchase anything from this company. every step has been all wrong. Now on to figure out what to do for a good nights sleep. REMEMBER MATTRESSFIRM IS NOT AN UPSTANDING COMPANY

The Best Mattress for a Better Night’s Sleep

Buying a new mattress? Here are tips for finding the right mattress for you.

You spend about a third of every day in bed. Whether that time is spent blissfully slumbering — or tossing and turning — depends a lot on your mattress.

"A mattress can impact a person’s sleep," says Michael Decker, PhD, RN, associate professor at Georgia State University and spokesman for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

One way that your mattress affects your sleep has to do with the network of fine blood vessels, called capillaries, that runs underneath your skin.

"When you lie on any part of your body for an extended period of time, the weight of it reduces the flow of blood through those blood vessels, which deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients," Decker says. This causes nerve cells and pain sensors in your skin to send a message to your brain for you to roll over. Rolling over restores blood flow to the area, but it also briefly interrupts your sleep.

Ideally, a mattress that reduces the pressure points on your body should give you a better night’s sleep, Decker says. Yet the ideal mattress is different for each person.

Which Mattress Is Right for You?

Finding the right mattress isn’t about searching out the highest-tech brand or spending the most money. "A much more expensive mattress doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better," Decker says. A high price tag is a product of both the materials that go into the mattress, and the marketing that helps sell it.

Instead of focusing on price and brand name, think about what you want in a mattress. "Selecting a mattress is very personal," Decker says. Some people prefer a firmer mattress; others favor a softer style.

Although there isn’t a lot of scientific evidence to prove that one type of mattress will help you sleep better than another, people with certain medical conditions do seem to rest easier on a particular mattress style.

Anyone with back or neck pain should take a Goldilocks approach to mattress buying: not too hard, and not too soft.

"If you’re on too soft [of] a mattress, you’ll start to sink down to the bottom. But on too hard of a mattress you have too much pressure on the sacrum, and on the shoulders, and on the back of the head," says Howard Levy, MD, an Emory University assistant professor of orthopaedics, physical medicine, and rehabilitation.

Continued

A medium-firm mattress, or a firm mattress with a softer pillow top, will give your spine that "just-right" balance of support and cushioning.

An adjustable bed can be a good buy if you need to sleep with your head raised. Doctors sometimes recommend elevating the head to help people with COPD breathe easier, or to prevent nighttime heartburn from GERD. These beds can also allow you to adjust your knees and hips to a 90-degree angle, relieving some of the pressure on sore joints, Levy says.

If you have allergies or asthma, you might have considered buying a bed labeled "hypoallergenic."

"There are a lot of claims made by mattress manufacturers that their mattresses are hypoallergenic or don’t support the growth of dust mites, but I don’t know of scientific evidence to support these claims," says Paul V. Williams, MD, a pediatrics professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine and an allergist at Northwest Allergy and Asthma Center in Washington state. Williams says dust mites will live anywhere there’s food — and that food is your dead skin cells.

Instead of investing in an allergy-free mattress, slip on a washable mattress encasing. It will form a barrier that prevents dust mites from getting to you. A mattress encasing cuts allergen growth by robbing dust mites of their food supply, Williams says.

And what about those space-age memory foam mattresses, which can cost thousands of dollars? There is some evidence they can help with back problems and improve sleep, but their advantage over a regular coil mattress is only slight. Where memory foam mattresses can really help you sleep is if you have an active bed partner who is keeping you awake, Decker says. Foam mattresses reduce motion transfer, letting you lie still while your partner tosses and turns.

Test Drive a Mattress Before You Buy

"You wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it," Decker says. So why would you invest hundreds — or even thousands of dollars in a mattress without trying it out first? Take any new mattress you’re considering for a test nap. "People should not be embarrassed to go into a store and lay on a mattress for 20 minutes," Decker says.

Continued

For a more realistic test, sleep in the beds at different hotel chains when you travel. If you get an especially good night’s sleep on one of them, ask the desk clerk what brand it is.

When you test out a mattress, make sure it feels comfortable in every position, especially the side you favor for sleeping. The mattress should be supportive where you need it, without putting too much pressure on your body, Levy says.

Time for a New Mattress

If you’ve been having trouble sleeping, the problem might not be your mattress type, but its age. "It’s really important for people to realize that mattresses have a certain lifespan," Decker says.

Keep your mattress too long, and the foam and other materials inside it will start to break down, compromising its ability to support your body.

Decker recommends keeping your mattress for no more than 10 years. After that, it’s time to go mattress shopping again.

Best Firm Mattress Reviews

Our review of the top rated firm mattresses online for the money.

Many of the hard mattresses on the market today are quite comfortable, and don’t sacrifice quality. On this list are the best rated firm mattresses that range from medium firm to extra firm and also vary in terms of materials. As a heads up, whenever we discuss prices, we are referencing the queen size mattresses, although we’re often factoring in the king mattress as well.

Overview Of Best Rated Beds

So you’re looking for a firm mattress, whether it’s a queen or king size. Chances are you’re a back or stomach sleeper, or you’re a heavier individual, or maybe you have a health concern that calls for a hard bed to sleep on. Back in the day, a firm mattress meant that you had to have a spring mattress on top of a foundation. Think of your grandma’s old mattress in her guest bedroom, or your dorm bed.

But now, with all of the amazing new mattress technology, including Hyper-Elastic Polymer, you have a wide range of options to choose from, meaningyou no longer have to sacrifice comfort for a firm mattress. With that in mind, it’s time to take a quick look at our list of the best rated firm mattresses for the money:

  • Firm Coil Mattress— Saatva Classic
  • Best Medium Firm Mattress— Leesa Hybrid
  • Best Extra Firm Mattress— Plank
  • Natural Materials— Awara
  • Semi Firm Foam Mattress— GhostBed Luxe

You might notice some consistencies in this post, such as all of these beds will rank as a medium firm to ultra firm on our firmness scale, all are going to be best mainly for people that favor their stomach and/or back, and all should be accommodating for heavier folks.

None of these beds will be the best options for side sleepers, as they need a soft, pressure relieving surface to accommodate for their hips and shoulders when on their side. In this post, we’ll explain what are the best firm or hard mattresses, and why.

What Is The Best Firm Mattress?

Changing mattresses can be difficult, especially when switching from a soft mattress to a firm one. Your body might need anywhere from several days to a full month to adjust to a new sleeping surface. But many times, these changes will be better for you in the long run. Having a sagging or worn out mattress can lead to issues with the spine, breathing, and blood flow. They can also just negatively affect your night’s sleep, which can cause issues with how you perform during the day.

The process of finding a new mattress in general can sometimes seem daunting. Your bed should be an investment in your life for the next 10-15 years, a happy place, and where you spend about a third of your life sleeping.

Mattresses are also a costly item, being anywhere from $200 to over $3,000 (depending on size and quality). We wish we could tell you plain and simple what the best mattress is for the money, but there are too many factors involved. As just one example, if you want a medium firm mattress there are about 20 products to consider, which are totally different from if you want an extra firm mattress. Making sure you do your research on your specific needs regarding how you like to sleep is very important before taking the leap and purchasing a new mattress. Not only that, but if you get a king size mattress rather than a queen, obviously there will be a major impact on price.

Whether you want an extra firm mattress or one that’s a little softer, Saatva has an option for you. If you want a firm king size mattress, Saatva is one of the best picks online.
Leesa’s coil bed is one of the most comfortable medium firm mattresses sold online. The bed combines 6" pocketed coils and various foams. It’s supportive, firm, and completely worth your time to learn more about. It’s a pretty darn good bed for the money.
Plank is a two sided firm mattress that’s price-conscious and offers a new take on an online mattress. It’s also from one of the largest brands out there, Brooklyn Bedding. If you’re looking for an extra firm mattress, Plank is just that (at least on one side) and should be plenty comfortable.
Awara is a cost-effective mattress that’s about a medium firm and should work for most sleeping positions. All things considered, if you’re in the market for the best semi firm mattress for the money, Awara has to be considered.
GhostBed Luxe is a semi firm mattress with plenty of cooling technologies. This is one of the most comfortable firm foam beds we’ve reviewed, and it has some special temperature-regulating features.

Extra Firm vs Medium Firm

When it comes to a new firm mattress, there’s a gigantic difference between extra firm and medium firm. In our reviews we generally consider extra firm mattresses to feel like a thin layer of foam on a board. I know that doesn’t sound appealing, but it represents the lack of pressure relief that an ultra firm mattress will offer. There are plenty of extra firm beds out there, but you will have a shorter list than if you were looking for a medium firm mattress, which is perhaps the most popular comfort level.

A medium firm mattress offers a good amount of pressure relief, but not so much that you’re “melting” into the bed. You should still feel the support, but immediately recognize that this is semi firm, not ultra firm. The majority of brands we’ve published reviews for offer a medium firm bed, or something just a little softer. You’d rather start too firm than too soft with your new bed, especially if you’re wondering what is the best firm mattress for your particular situation.

The Most Comfortable Mattress Is A Subjective Term

We mention this in almost all of our mattress reviews. We want to bring it up here to remind you that comfort—and even firmness—is a relative term. If you’re looking for an extra firm mattress, your idea of comfort will be different from most people because most people select a bed in the medium to medium firm range.

Additionally, your weight affects your interpretation of feel and firmness. The more pressure you’re applying to the bed, the softer it will feel. Thus, if you have a semi firm mattress, to you it might feel like a soft bed. Likewise if you’re petite, a semi firm bed might feel ultra firm. With that in mind, finding the most comfortable firm mattress might not be as straightforward as you had hoped since our opinion is most certainly different from yours. We might think one mattress is comfortable and you disagree. Mattress shopping is subjective, there’s no way around it.

Saatva Mattress

BEST FOR:

  • Those who want a firm mattress with a Euro top cover
  • All body types
  • People that want a luxury bed that sells for around $1,000-$1,200 (great value for the money)
  • If you want a choice between an extra firm and medium firm mattress
  • People that want a bed from one of the top rated online brands

Saatva is our “Firm Coil Mattress” choice for this list. Saatva is a luxury mattress brand that doesn’t believe their beds should be put in boxes, so they offerfree white-glove delivery.

This means a delivery company will hand deliver your new mattress to you (with or without the white gloves), set it up exactly how and where you want it, and then remove your old mattress— all complimentary. The downside to this is that they charge $99 for returns, should you change your mind about the bed. We doubt you’ll do that, but we mention it so you’re aware.

Two layers of coils and an organic cotton cover

Saatva comes in multiple firmness levels, and for this post we specifically like the two firmer options. We rated them as a medium firm to firm on our firmness scale. This bed is built with a dual coil system of individually wrapped coils and a steel coil base, and then has a firm Euro top that’s very responsive, so you will probably never feel “stuck in the mud.” This bed has some bounce to it (great for pillow fights), and an organic cotton cover that we think smells like burlap (in a good way!).

It’s oh so nice and sells for just over $1,000

The springs in this mattress make it accommodating for all body types, but we recommend most people, including combination sleepers, look into the medium firm model. They also have the firm model, but remember, that’s an extra firm mattress.

Leesa Hybrid

BEST FOR:

  • All body types (Sapira is thick/supportive)
  • Those who like a neutral foam feel (and want a supportive bed)
  • Anyone that wants a premium mattress with a we-cut-out-the-middle-man price
  • Anyone that needs a semi firm mattress
  • If you want one of the best rated mattresses online

This bed has afirmer neutral foam feel with a textured cover mixed in. It’s actually one of the more unique beds that we’ve tested to date.

In total, Leesa is about 11″ thick comprised of pocketed coils and a few different foams, plus a really nice, silky cover. Because the bed is about a medium firm, you won’t necessarily feel all of the layers, but rather you will just noticed that it has comfortable foam feel. This is the type of bed you want to nestle intoand never get out of.

Inside Leesa’s coil mattress

Because it is such a thick and luxurious bed, it will be a pretty good option for heavy people or anyone that just wants a supportive bed. In general, you will remain on top of the mattress, which is why from the get-go we say it’s a little better for people that spend most of the night on their belly/back. Of course, it will soften with use, but on day one it will be quite firm.

Leesa’s coil mattress belongs in a five-star hotel

Perhapsthe best part about Leesa is just how accomodating it is, especially if you get the king size mattress. If you’re ok with the firmness level, we imagine the feel of the bed will be no issue. It’s the type of bed that nearly everyone agrees is comfy even if it’s too firm, or they had original wanted something different.

Plank

BEST FOR:

  • Anyone that wants a choice between ultra firm and semi firm
  • If you want an inexpensive firm foam mattress (after-discount it’s under $850 for a queen size)
  • Anyone that wants the option to flip their mattress

Plank is a new mattress concept in that it’s double sided, and both sides are firm. They have a medium firm side and an extra firm side. You can see our firmness ratings for each side in the graphic below.

As you can see, we rated their “Soft” side as a semi firm and the “Firm” side as an extra firm. Despite the firmness level, however, we recommend medium and petite individuals try out Plank. If you’re heavy (i.e. well over 250 lb) there are other options to look into such as the Big Fig mattress.

Brooklyn Bedding intentionally created Plank to have a minimalist design

This bed isgreat for back and stomach sleepers, though, combination sleepers will probably be fine on the softer side. At the end of the day, though, we put Plank on the list because of the firmer side for people that want an ultra firm mattress. If you need a comfortable firm mattress, Plank gives you two chances to get it right.

Awara is an inexpensive hybrid mattress that ships directly to you. It’s also fairly new to the mattress scene and is backed by Resident Home, the company that brought you Nectar and DreamCloud. This coil mattress is constructed withpocketed coils and a foam top layer. Some Slumber Yard team members have compared the feeling of this bed to that of laying on an extra-thick bed of grass, because there’s a thin layer of cushion before the firm ground, or in this case, individually wrapped coils.

Our overall firmness rating for the bed is closer to a medium firm, which means it will be able to accomodate all sleeping positions, although some people that sleep on their side might consider it too firm. Still, we find it to be supremely comfortable, especially when you think about the fact that it’s a wallet-friendly mattress.

If you take one look at the price tag, you’ll know why we call it a great value

Awara has certain natural materials, comes with free shipping and returns, and has a “forever” warranty. The MSRP is under $1,500 for the queen size mattress. And that is before you apply any discounts. Most of the time, you can expect the queen size to cost you about $1,200. If you go to AwaraSleep.com you can see current deals and offers.

GhostBed Luxe Mattress

  • Anyone that wants a longer warranty

The GhostBed Luxe is for those of you who tend to sleep hot, and are looking to cool down. This bed uses gel-infused foam with a mix of a Japanese cooling fiber, giving you a “GhostHug” feel (a cold foam hug). Heavier folks will probably get that “GhostHug,” but average sized individuals might not because the lighter you are, the less you sink into the material.

Although this is technically a firm bed, it’s actually more of a semi firm bed. We think it’s very comfortable and would be a nice pick for a wide range of sleepers.

The GhostBed Luxe is cool-to-the-touch

The GhostBed Luxe is going to be accommodating for heavy folks because it’s a thicker bed made with quality materials, and of course the firmness helps it to manage heavier people. Even so, we prefer you look into a coil bed first, but GhostBed Luxe is one of the better options for overweight and large individuals.

Here at the Slumber Yard, we literally have a room piled full of queen mattresses that we test out on a daily basis. We have a complete spectrum of beds, ranging from college student prices to almost over-the-top luxurious—and some that are just fantastic mattresses for the money. We have published reviews of poly foam beds, memory foam mattresses, latex mattresses, beds with coils, and more. We think about things like whether or not there’s enough edge support on the queen mattress for couples. Will this bed sleep hot, or cool? Is this too much for my child’s twin mattress? We take all the guesswork out of the equation for you, because we’re basically mattress nerds. So, if you’re searching for ultra firm or semi firm, we’ve got you covered.

How We Selected Firm Mattresses

We have a firmness scale here at the Slumber Yard to help categorize the firmness level of every mattress we test. It makes things easier for both us and you. Our scale ranges from soft, to medium soft, to medium, to medium firm, and finally, ultra firm. All of the beds on this list have been rated either a medium firm or extra firm. Please keep in mind that firmness is a term dependent on body weight, which we explain later in this post, but we have a wide range of Slumber Yard team members in all different body shapes and sizes, which helps us find a median place on the firmness scale for each bed. If you’re looking for the most supportive beds out there, check out our list of the Best Mattresses for Heavy & Obese People.

Who Is A Firm Mattress Best For?

There are usually some specific qualifications for people who tend to seek out a hard mattress. First is that you’re possibly a back or stomach sleeper. These sleepers need a firm surface that won’t let their head, hips, or shoulders sink into the mattress too much, which would cause the spine to curve or arch. You need to keep their spine in neutral alignment, which can prevent back pain and waking up with soreness. We notice that back sleepers typically like a firmer surface, perhaps even an extra firm one, and then belly sleepers might need a little bit more cushion such as a medium firm mattress.

Another reason you may want a firm bed is that you might be a heavier individual. Firmness is a relative term to weight, which can make things tricky if you’re either much heavier (250 lb+) or much lighter (100 lb-). Heavier individuals tend to sink into a mattress deeper, because they’re displacing more weight into it. This makes the bed feel softer for them. If you’re a heavier individual who sleeps main on their back or belly, or might just prefer an ultra firm bed in general, it can be more difficult for you to find what you’re looking for. Contrast that with someone that weighs under 150 lbs who will think even a semi firm mattress is extra firm.

The last reason for wanting a harder sleep surface is that you might have a medical condition that requires a firm mattress every night. Whether that has to do with spinal issues, breathing issues, or something else, always consult with your doctor before making a final decision and purchasing a new bed.

How To Clean Your New Mattress

Since the covers on the mattresses listed above aren’t machine washable, you’ll have to take a few extra steps to get them clean when you or your loved one makes an accidental spill. It’s pretty simple — all you need is a mild detergent, warm water, and a towel. Just make sure you don’t use too much water because it may cause damage to the foam in your mattress, which is obviously the last thing you want when you’re just trying to clean up some orange juice from breakfast-in-bed.

Many online mattresses have removable covers, but you need to be careful because that doesn’t mean it’s machine washable. If you do, you’re at risk of shrinking the cover to the point where it won’t fit over your mattress anymore. If your desire for a bed with a removable cover outweighs your yearning for one of our top rated firm mattresses, check out our review on a Helix Mattress and Yogabed.

The Best Medium Firm Mattress

We made one selection for the best medium firm mattress, but the truth is that there are a dozen or so really fantastic beds in that firmness range. And for the record, we consider a medium firm and semi firm mattress to be the same thing.

Now, why are they so popular? Well, in many cases people just prefer a slightly firmer profile, but in other cases, it’s about starting firmer because all beds. In fact, if you want a bed to be just firmer than a “medium” you probably want to start a little up the firmness chain. Another reason would be that a medium firm mattress is really accommodating because in many cases you can sleep in any and all sleeping positions. That means, if you’re spending a lot of time on your side at night, often times a semi firm mattress will be plenty accommodating—and the same would be generally true for people laying on their stomach or back, too.

There are countless other reasons why you might like this style of bed, but let’s not waste anymore time—let’s take a look at the best medium firm mattresses, according to our editors:

It’s not fair to say that above is an exhaustive list. The truth is that there are dozens of medium firm mattresses that we like a lot, and you probably will too. We’d say, you can start with our list and expand from there. Also, we left out plenty of beds that come in multiple firmness options, including Brooklyn Signature, Amerisleep, Helix Sleep, Nest Alexander, and plenty of others. You may want to look through our Mattress Reviews page to see more beds.

What About The Extra Firm Mattress?

We’ve covered the semi firm mattress, but what about the ultra firm one? After all, there’s a huge number of people that outright prefer an extra firm mattress—whether because of a health condition or just for comfort. An ultra firm mattress is one that doesn’t have a whole lot of give. The idea is that you feel as if you’re laying on a thick bed of grass. You get a little cushioning, but not much. With all of that in mind, let’s take a look a list of best extra firm mattresses:

Clearly, we could make our list much longer, but that’s a fantastic place to start. Our selection, often times, is Plank because it offers two different firmness options. There’s the medium firm and the ultra firm, so it’s kind of like the best of both worlds. If you’re wondering what is the best firm mattress, we do think plenty of people will like that bed, but of course there are countless other great options.

More About Online Mattresses

Most of the mattress reviews we’ve published include a “boxed mattress,” and will show up outside your front door inside packaging that’s about 4 ft tall (or a bag, but it’s still the same concept). At first glance, you might wonder if you accidentally purchased a mattress topper. We assure you, whatever size mattress you ordered is going to be in there. If you’re still a little skeptical, you’ll warm up to the idea once you don’t have to struggle carrying a mattress as tall as you are through your front door all the way to your bedroom.

How do they compress a 6 ft long queen mattress to only ⅔ the size? The simple answer is they’re rolled up and compressed, so they take up a lot less space than they normally would inside your bedroom. Once you remove the packaging from your new mattress, you’ll want to lay it on a flat surface and wait about 24-48 hours so you can allow time for it to decompress and off-gas. The entire online mattress concept just offers a wonderful product for the money.

How Did The Slumber Yard Get These Mattresses?

Basically all of our mattresses are sent to us straight from the company so we can properly review, and compare the beds to other brands. Even though that’s the case, we’ll always keep our reviews unbiased and honest. Other than some other review sites out there, we aren’t owned by a company and we don’t accept bribes. If we say we like a mattress or product, you can rest assured that the members on our team with a range of body types and sleeper types gave it our stamp-of-approval.

Returns and Trial Periods

When you purchase from an online mattress company, you get to take advantage of their generous return and trial period policies. All of the brands listed above offer free shipping and will give you a risk-free trial period to make sure you find the most comfortable firm mattress for you.

Some brands give you an average of 100 days to test it out, while other companies like DreamCloud will give you an entire year. If you decide you don’t like your mattress within the trial period, you’ll be able to return your mattress for 100% of your money back. Most companies just urge you to wait at least 30 days before you make a final decision, so you can allow your body to become acclimated to your new mattress.

This is another thing online mattress companies has over many Brick-and-mortar retailers. The brands who are strictly in-store usually require you to exchange your mattress, rather than get your money back with a return. In general, the size of bed you get has little to no impact on its firmness rating or overall comfort of the bed. The one thing that we want to point out is that if you have two people on the same bed, they will have different estimates in terms of how firm it is. That said, the best way to make two people happy on the bed is to have them get a firm king mattress. Why is that so? Well, they will have more room on the king size mattress so they don’t bump into each other all the time. Getting comfortable for one person can be difficult—especially on an older mattress—and when you add a second person, the equation gets quite a bit more difficult to solve. We advise “sizing up” and getting a king mattress. Now, obviously, you’d get a firm king mattress since you’re interested in the beds in the 6-10 range in terms of hardness.

Having said all of that, we realize that not everyone can afford a king mattress. In that case, for one person or two, we suggest the queen size mattress, which measures in at 60″ x 80″ typically. A firm queen mattress will generally have fairly strong edge support, so if you are sleeping with a partner, that’s an advantage over certain other beds. But how much larger is the king mattress than the queen? It’s about 25% larger in terms of overall space, which is why we say couples should get a king if they can afford it.

A good mattress can go a long way to ensuring you get a good night’s sleep.

Finding a mattress you find comfortable and suits your budget can be tricky.

Five minutes of feeling things out on a bustling show floor won’t help you figure out which brands and models are comfortable and long lasting.

We can help you work out what type and size of mattress is best for you, and even how to save 50% or more on your next purchase.

How to choose a comfortable mattress

Comfort is subjective, but understanding mattress firmness and the differences in mattress type will help you narrow the field when it comes to testing a mattress instore.

How firm should my mattress be?

It all comes down to your preferred sleeping position:

  • Firm: If you sleep on your stomach, a firm mattress will keep your spine aligned.
  • Medium: If you sleep on your back, it’ll provide support for your spine, back and neck while keeping you comfortable.
  • Soft: Great for sleeping on your side because it’ll support and contour your body’s curves.

But be warned: we’ve found that most retailers’ firmness claims don’t match the bed being sold. We do body support and stability tests when we test mattresses, so check out our mattress reviews to see what we found.

If you’re a side sleeper, a soft mattress will support your body’s curves.

What type of mattress is best?

It really depends on your personal preference. For example, you may find a spring mattress supports your spine while a foam finish feels a bit too solid.

We explain the pros and cons, and price range, for the different types of mattresses.

There are two types of coil mattresses:

  • Continuous coil mattresses are made from a single piece of wire looped into springs.
  • Open-coil mattresses are made of single springs fixed together by one wire.
Price
  • $400 to $10,000*
  • They’re usually lighter than other options.
  • Typically cheaper.
  • Can wear out quickly.
  • Because the springs move as one unit the mattress is less responsive to your body.
  • Any tossing and turning is likely to disturb a partner.
  • Springs can rust.

* Typical retail for a queen-sized mattress.

Topped with a layer of temperature-sensitive viscoelastic material, aka memory foam.

Price

Pros

  • Absorbs your weight as you sink in, taking pressure off your joints and increasing circulation.
  • Can mould to the shape of your body.
  • No risk of rust (if foam only).

Cons

  • Can make you feel "encased".
  • Can feel too solid and dense (not springy). Not likely to please someone wanting a softer, more cushioned night’s sleep.
  • Can get warm easily due to limited air circulation.
  • Can be cumbersome to move due to their weight and heft.

* Typical retail for a queen-sized mattress.

A blend of natural and synthetic latex that moulds to body shape.

Price

Pros

  • Durable and breathable.
  • Better for people with allergies.
  • Doesn’t gather dust mites.

Cons

  • Has a solid feel, so they’re not likely to please someone wanting a softer, more cushioned night’s sleep.
  • Can be cumbersome to move due to their weight and heft.
  • Cheaper versions can get lumpy after a time.

* Typical retail for a queen-sized mattress.

Has up to 3000 springs sewn into individual fabric pockets.

Price

Pros

  • Good air circulation.
  • Firmness can be set by tweaking spring tension (by manufacturer).
  • Good support by distributing your body weight evenly.
  • Can support two people of two different body weights well because the springs are separate.

Cons

  • Can be heavy to turn, as they’re filled with natural materials, such as lambswool.
  • Natural materials can exacerbate allergies.
  • Springs can rust.

* Typical retail for a queen-sized mattress.

These combine elements of memory foam and spring mattresses. They have the same pros and cons.

What size mattress do I need?

Retailers and manufacturers recommend buying the largest bed your room can accommodate, and the length of the mattress should be at least 10–15 centimetres longer than the tallest person sleeping on it.

SizeMeasurements (W x L)
Single92 x 187cm
Single extra long92 x 203cm
King single106 x 203cm
Double137 x 187cm
Queen153 x 203cm
King183 x 203cm

How to test a mattress instore

  • Take your time: Most people need seven to nine hours sleep a night. A couple of minutes on your back won’t come close to replicating this experience. Lie down for as long as you need – though you probably shouldn’t spend the night.
  • Move about: Roll over, sit up, get in and out of the bed. Ease of movement contributes to comfort. It will take more effort if the mattress is too soft, and will feel uncomfortable on your hips and shoulders if it’s too firm.
  • Sleep on slats (or a base): Make sure the bed base in the shop is similar to the one you have at home. If you have fixed slats or a hard surface, a soft mattress will feel very different on top of that, rather than the ensemble base it’s resting on in the shop.
  • Bring your partner: If you share a bed with someone regularly or every night, bring them along and ask them to lie in the bed and move around. Be aware of how the bed moves on your side when your partner moves.
  • Don’t shop tired: All the mattresses will feel great if you’re already sleepy!
  • Ask the salesperson to leave: While they may be friendly and helpful, few of us are able to really relax when someone is hovering around.
  • Ask questions about the display model: The mattress you test in store could have been on display for two days, two weeks or even two months, with hundreds of customers potentially trying them out over that period. This will affect sag, firmness, support and so on.
  • Ask if there’s a comfort guarantee:Most manufacturers don’t offer a guarantee on comfort, so you probably can’t return it if it doesn’t feel right. That said, there are a few brands that do, so it always pays to ask. Jump to Can I return a mattress? for more info.

Take your time when buying a mattress in store, and don’t be afraid to ask the salesperson to leave you to it.

How to get the best deal on a mattress

Retailers leave a significant amount of wiggle room in the price. In fact, you’re getting ripped off if you settle for RRP.

We shaved at least half and even two-thirds off the asking price while shopping for most of the mattresses in our recent tests by using the following tricks:

  • Wait for a sale: They take place regularly and can bring the price down by as much as 50%.
  • Head in store: Deals are generally better instore than online.
  • Haggle: We rarely encountered a salesperson who wasn’t willing to shave a few hundred dollars off the asking price, even during a sale.
  • Buy in bulk: Our discounts improved when we bought at least two beds at once, which may be handy if you’re refurnishing a house.
  • Consider exclusive ranges: Retailers such as Snooze, Forty Winks and Fantastic stock exclusive brands. We found that salespeople are much more inclined to sell these over third-party brands. Snooze, for example, offered us a much better discount on their exclusive Madison range when we expressed interest in buying a Sealy.

How to haggle

Haggling can be tricky, particularly if you’re not overly confident. But you don’t need to be a smooth-talking, wheeling and dealing sort to take advantage of potential savings.

After a little back-and-forward with salespeople, we asked this question:

  • "What’s the best you can do?"

That’s it – or some sort of variant.

Remember, you’re there to buy, they’re there to sell. You’re not establishing a lifelong friendship, and they’re not going to throw you out for asking.

Mattress mark-ups are so high, you don’t need to do much when it comes to saving money, which is why this question works.

Should I buy a mattress in store or online?

Bed in a box is an online only mattress industry. Manufacturers cut out the middleman by selling directly to the consumer, and they deliver compressed mattresses to your door in a box, hence the name. Once opened, the mattresses slowly expand into the full size (single, double, queen etc).

  • As well as being a cheaper, and much more convenient, almost all brands let you assess the mattress after purchasing.
  • If you don’t like it, you can return it for a refund, making the purchase more or less risk free.

However, this does not mean online shopping is always the best option.

Buying your mattress instore

  • Can try before you buy.
  • Opportunity to haggle.
  • Lots of options from multiple brands in one place.
  • Point of return if faulty.
  • Many types available.
  • Generally no trial period (some exceptions such as Forty Winks).
  • Can’t change your mind once it’s used.
  • Shady sales practices (e.g. tested firmness doesn’t match advertised firmness).
  • Sales situations can be high pressure.
  • Need to take it home or pay extra for delivery.

Buying your mattress online

  • Delivered to your door.
  • Cheaper.
  • Trial period (e.g. Koala allows 120 days, no questions asked returns).
  • Can change your mind.
  • No pressure to buy.
  • Sold at set price. No ability to haggle.
  • You need to buy the mattress before trying it.
  • Forced to trust manufacturer claims regarding firmness, comfort etc.
  • Can be harder to return (than a traditional retailer).
  • Mostly limited to foam mattresses (small number of spring mattresses available)

Trial period

Bed in a box brands however, offer home trial periods that range from 30, to more than 100 nights. If you’re unhappy with your purchase, you can exchange the mattress for a different model (if available), or a full refund.

  • It takes a few nights, minimum, to adjust to a new mattress.
  • You aren’t forced to speculate and make a snap decision that you may later regret.
  • You may come to like a bed that initially felt uncomfortable. This is another reason why our out of the box comfort results are not the defining scores in our test.
  • It significantly reduces the financial risks involved.

See our mattress reviews to find out how long the different retailers give you to try the mattress at home and still return it.

Can I return a mattress?

Making a warranty claim on your mattress

This can be tricky, because arguments regarding comfort, faults and so on can be considered subjective, or part of ‘normal wear and tear’.

And while most mattresses have a 10-year warranty period, the small print is often overflowing with restrictions and conditions.

Take SleepMaker for example. While their warranty covers manufacturing faults, theywon’t protect against:

  • a reasonable level of dipping (25–35mm)
  • comfort concern as a result of product selection
  • heat issues.

These are just some of the terms, but they illustrate the grey areas consumers can find themselves in.

As our investigation into spring mattresses found, advertised and tested firmness rarely match up, and it’s likely that your purchase may not be as comfortable as you expect.

However, this wouldn’t fall under a warranty claim in SleepMaker’s case. These terms aren’t exclusive to SleepMaker. In fact, they’re one of the more upfront brands when it comes to outlining their claims procedure.

Most mattresses have a 10-year warranty period, but the small print is often overflowing with restrictions and conditions

Returning your mattress (traditional retailer)

The onus largely falls on you, the buyer, to make the right purchase if you’re buying from a retailer, even when the industry practices are questionable.

Because mattresses are used in the same manner as clothes, headphones etc., getting a refund under general consumer protections can be difficult.

These generally cover unfit for purpose, which isunlikely to include:

  • comfort
  • size (mattress not fitting your base)
  • reasonable sagging after extensive use
  • damage due to misuse or mishandling
  • smell and general wear and tear (i.e. stains).

If you truly feel that you’ve been sold a faulty product, be persistent. You can make a return.

One of the mattresses we bought from our test arrived with rust around the frame. This is reasonable grounds for a return.

Returning your mattress (bed in a box)

Almost all bed in a box brands offer a free trial period. You can return the mattress for a refund within this time, if you don’t like it. Returned beds are typically donated to charity.

However, you must adhere to these general terms to be eligible:

  • Duration: Make sure you apply for a refund/return within the allocated period.
  • Minimum use period: Brands also specify a minimum usage period before you’re eligible for a return, so you can take time to properly assess the mattress.
  • Damage: You won’t be able to return a mattress if it’s damaged, sunk, stained, torn etc. It’s worth treating your mattress like fine china, keeping it well away from food, drink and so on, and making sure you’re clean as a whistle when it’s time for bed.
  • Protection: Almost all brands specify that you must use a mattress protector during the free trial period.

Check the "free trial" page on the company’s website to find the specific terms

The so-called free trial period may incur a return fee depending on where you live, and how the manufacturer handles returns.

  • Metro areas:major cities and urban centres are eligible for free returns in almost all cases.
  • Rural and regional areas: about half of the brands we looked at charge a pickup fee outside metro locations.
  • Service dependent: companies will either send their own crew, a courier, or a representative from their charity they’ve partnered with to collect the mattress. You may have to organise your own courier if the brand can’t make it to your location, which will result in additional costs. This is usually determined during the return process.
  • Occasionally, you’ll encounter brands that charge an exchange fee, on top of the pickup costs.

We were looking for another Tempur-Pedic Mattress after our move to AZ. We Went to the Mattress Firm knowing what we wanted and we ended up getting the Best & Easiest Service ever. Our sales associate was Tamara **. She was so helpful listening as I explained about my bad back she knew immediately which mattress We needed to try, not only did we get the Tempur-Luxbreeze mattress but We ended up getting a great deal, also received our pillows & mattress in the package for nothing. I would definitely recommend going to this mattress firm and asking for Tamara. She will set you up with a wonderful mattress. Can’t wait to start getting a great night sleep again on our new mattress!! Thanks Mattress firm for making our purchase an easy one.. I wanted to reach out to Mattress Firm in Aventura, Florida, who gave an elderly widow who was having a hard time making ends meet due to her being on a fixed income. Mattress firm gave her a brand new bed for free to help her just before the Christmas holiday, I think that was a very honorable thing to do for her, thanks to the management and staff, have a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

When we bought two different Brand name mattresses in different firmness from Mattress Firm, we were given a great deal and 120 days to decide to keep. After only a couple weeks we knew we were not happy with our choice, her’s was too firm and mine was way too soft, even though we picked out the softest and firmest Mattress Firm had to offer. The manager was our salesman from the beginning and Super helpful throughout the process and did everything he could to make us happy but after we tried many other mattresses and nothing was satisfactory he refunded In Full every penny. All of the mattresses Mattress Firm sold were of the Highest quality but just Not Firm enough for me OR soft enough for her. – All in all I give Mattress Firm a Top Recommendation.

Went in as this company sells purple and wanted to experience it. Had only planned on upgrading the mattress and never experience an adjustable frame. We felt so well taken care of we did not even go look at other brands or stores. From the moment we walked in, Levon, the store manager of the Ypsilanti MI store, greeted us and made us feel welcome and made sure we experienced the range of not only purple but options for frames. Since current bed is 20 years old and standard frame, much as changed. There is a lot of tech now in sleep hardware and the experience is like buying a car with all the selection + financing options and sales. In our case we did not have the high pressure that would be associated with car purchases sometimes.

Our case was unique in that we went through some adjustments in model/s decided before delivery. We deciding to upgrade bed frame, changing some things etc. Levon was there all the way and excellent communication and assistant as changing terms and items around requires good knowledge and patients. He obviously knows his stuff. Since I live halfway between Ann Arbor area and Toledo, did go in to a mattress firm in OH to check on the mattress I would be getting, for one last feel even though Mattress Firm has an in-home 120 days trial. The employee in that store knew of Levon and talked well of him as a great person to be working with. Knowing he is even respected by fellow workers in others stores says something. Delivery was on time and professional. Highly recommend this store and working with the manager there.

I have a fused cervical spine and chronic lower back pain, I have literally spent close to ten thousand dollars on mattresses over the past several years just trying to get a good comfortable nights sleep! I have wasted so much money on high end mattresses and yet after 4-6 months the mattresses seems to just get less comfortable and then end up causing me even more sleep robbing pain..

Most places I’ve been to in search of quality mattresses, (And I’ve been to quite a few!) are just full of paycheck hungry salesmen. Dennis ** at the Riverdale Mattress Firm store was more than just a salesman, He was someone who literally understood my issues as he has very similar issues himself. he not only shared his knowledge with me but also took the time to educate me on other options and gave me a few more tools to work with. He also helped me out by discounting a floor model for me as he sympathized the fact that I have bought so many high dollar mattresses over the past several years. Great guy! more than just a hungry salesman, he was kind and knowledgeable, very helpful in my opinion. I had a very positive experience at the Mattress Firm store in Riverdale. I just thought I would share this with anyone whom it may be relevant to.

Our salesperson was fantastic. Not so much the company. Warranty situation. 10 yr only lasted 3+. Only able to purchase full price with sale price credit. Had to downgrade quality to avoid years more of payment. They should offer equal quality mattress in exchange.

Moral of the story: Brick and mortar mattress stores are becoming obsolete and charge a hefty markup. Do your research and purchase a quality mattress online. It will save you time and money and online sellers are much more flexible with returns. I have no issues with Mattress firm employees. Their policies are what created the headaches.

This was my wife and my first time buying a mattress. We thought that going to a brick and mortar store to test out the mattresses ourselves would be our best bet. Unfortunately, we got tangled up with all the nonsense that is embedded in the traditional mattress buying process. We started at Mattress Firm and were shown the Beautyrest hybrid which we liked. The sales manager, Craig, gave us what he said was a "good deal", but we would have to pay and sign for it that day as he "may not be in the same store tomorrow" (he turned out to be in the same store for weeks to come). I found out later that day that the price he gave us for the mattress was the exact same price as their website.

We had the option of canceling the order at no cost anytime before the delivery one week out. We ended up signing the papers with the intent on shopping around some more. We then went to Ashley Homestore and found a Sterns and Fosters mattress that we liked even better. I called Craig in the store and he said that he would beat their quoted price for the same mattress. We went back to Mattress Firm to find that they did not carry the same Sterns and Fosters model. I found out manufacturers sell the same mattress to different sellers just with different names to confuse buyers even more. Craig then had us try out a few comparable mattresses and we then settled on a Serta iSeries 300 hybrid (plush). We also were purchasing an adjustable frame as my wife has sleep apnea, so having the adjustable frame improves sleep quality. Craig threw in free setup of the adjustable frame and a purple pillow, so kudos to him on that.

The mattress arrived a week later and they set it up no problems. After they left, I discovered that a few of the button tufts were unseamed (see photos). I called Craig to notify him of this issue and possibly get a credit on the account as I was delivered a mattress with a defect. He said that the tufting was not something that was under warranty and that he would have to contact his manager in order to see what he could do. After several calls throughout the week there was no traction made. Sleeping on the mattress was comfy for the first couple of nights, but after the mattress broke in we began to have some reoccurring back pain.

After doing some research, having a firmer mattress is better for back support, especially with an adjustable frame. Why would we be sold a plush mattress when they were aware it was going to be on an adjustable frame and my wife had complained of back pain issues? Clearly we were not given the proper insight into this before making the purchase. After doing some more research on alternative mattresses, I stumbled upon the Avocado Green mattress. It had the highest Consumer Reports rating this past year and had very high scores for back sleepers. I also found out that the price of the Avocado was less than what we paid for the Serta.

I called Craig yet again to figure out our options for returning the mattress. He informed us that we could not return the mattress until 21 days after we received the mattress. He also said there would be a 20% restocking fee for the return and that we would have to pay back the discount he gave us on the adjustable frame in order to return it. I told him this was unacceptable and that I would be willing to pay a 10% restocking fee and not pay the difference on the adjustable frame (we ended up getting this). We ordered the Avocado mattress and were very well informed of our options by their customer support team. We’ve been sleeping on the Avocado for a couple of weeks and could not be happier. I wouldn’t recommend anyone go through Mattress Firm to purchase a mattress. Their prices are far too marked up and there are plenty of great mattresses available online at a lower price.
