Many of us grew up with an innerspring mattress. You might even remember flipping them every so often as part of their general care. Maybe they’re fond memories of the whole family getting together to share in the activity. Or maybe you broke a lamp, immediately after assuring someone you didn’t need to move the lamp.
Over the years, mattress technology has evolved, bringing us pillowtops, water beds, air mattresses, and memory foam. While quite a few consumers still have innerspring mattresses, they’re no longer the only option out there. With so many different kinds of mattress becoming ubiquitous over the years, it can be difficult to know if the same care routines you remember still apply.
Should I flip my mattress?
First, it’s important to know whether youshouldflip your mattress—because sometimes you shouldn’t. Do you have a two-sided mattress, like an innerspring? Yes, flip it. Do you have a one-sided mattress? Don’t flip it: Rotate it instead.
Don’t stress: If you’re unsure if your mattress is one-sided or two-sided, you can always test it out to see if it’s comfortable on both sides. Either way, it won’t hurt your mattress.
Many modern mattresses areone-sided, meaning they have one sleepable surface and one surface that wasn’t designed to be slept on. Pillowtops have their namesake cushioning on one side and not the other. Some foam mattresses have layers, with softer foam on top of increasingly dense layers for structure and support. These mattresses shouldn’t be flipped and should instead berotated.
Two-sidedmattresses were designed specifically to be flipped. Flipping your mattress helps distribute your weight more evenly than just rotating the mattress, so typically flippable mattresses have a longer lifespan. Two-sided mattresses are often clearly marketed as having two sides. Innersprings and some foam mattresses fall into this category.
There are also outliers that fall somewhere in between. For example, there are newer foam mattresses with a soft side and a firm side, both of which are sleepable surfaces. While this means they’re technically two-sided, users are supposed to pick a side they prefer, then rotate it regularly.
How do you flip a mattress?
It’s a good idea to get a partner to help you flip your mattress: It’s both safer and faster.
•A two-sided mattress,preferably one in need of flipping.
•Clear space.If you can’t spin your mattress 180° around the center of your bed without it bumping into something, you need to move that something. Especially that lamp.
•A friend.Mattresses are floppy, unwieldy rectangles that get more difficult to manage the larger they are. It’s best to recruit a partner to aid with the flipping process.
The trick here is to keep the mattress centered on your bed frame as much as possible. Not only does that disrupt the least amount of space in your room, but using the frame helps prevent the mattress from twisting, flopping, or otherwise being cumbersome to manipulate. The same is true if for rotating a one-sided mattress.
Why do I need to flip my mattresses?
Uneven wear on your mattress can lead to poor sleep quality over time. It’s subtle, so it’s good to stay on top of your mattress maintenance.
The main reason to flip or rotate a mattress is to even out its wear over time. Unless your body is a rectangular cuboid the exact size of your mattress, you’re going to wear down certain parts of your mattress faster than others. Flipping or rotating the mattress ensures your weight is distributed more evenly throughout the mattress, allowing higher-pressure areas to decompress over time. This should help keep your sleeping surface smoother for longer.
How often should I flip or rotate my mattress?
Depending on the mattress, we’ve seen suggestions ranging from once to four times a year, but the number of times you flip is less important than the regularity with which you flip.
The goal is to even out the wear on your mattress, so flipping your mattress at set intervals helps ensure all parts of your mattress are getting slept on and decompressing for equal amounts of time. Flipping at indiscriminate intervals means parts of your mattress are still getting worn down faster than others.

We’ve been told (correctly) that rotating and/or flipping the mattress is often the key to its healthy performance and long lifespan. If we do not rotate our mattress and give that space the ability to recover, we may need a new mattress sooner than later.

Why Should I Rotate My Mattress?
First, let’s clarify what we mean by “rotate.” When we talk about it in this post, we meanmoving the mattress 180 degrees,so the portion that was at the head of the bed is now at the foot of the bed.
As we mentioned up at the top, some mattresses needed to be rotated because it evens out the overall wear and prolongs the bed’s lifespan. It also helpskeep the spine in neutral alignment, a crucial aspect of getting a good night’s sleep and waking up pain-free.
Sleeping in the same spot every night, night after night will cause the bed towear unevenlyover time. This can also result in sagging,which will cause the spine to get out of alignment and could ultimately cause people to feel pain and potentially need to replace their mattress. By rotating it, people are giving one area a chance to recover and a fresher spot to take on new weight.
How Often Should I Rotate My Mattress?
There are so many different materials and combinations of materials used in mattress construction now that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to how often people should rotate their mattress.
In general, mattress brands that recommend rotation suggest doing itevery three months to once a year.The main point seems to be that people keep up with it and try to be regular about their rotations.
How Do I Rotate My Mattress?
Here are some recommendations on how to rotate a mattress in the most stress and hopefully pain-free way possible.
Plan out rotationsfor the year in advance. People should use a phone, laptop or a printed calendar to remind themselves to periodically rotate their mattresses through the year. Some mattress brands may recommend every three months, in which case they could use the beginning/end of a business quarter to rotate. The Fourth of July holiday is a great halfway point to rotate the bed as well. And it’s never a bad idea to start the new year out sleeping on a fresh side of the bed, either.
Prep the space. Nothing is more frustrating than lifting a heavy mattress and holding it while people make decisions. People should spare themselves by moving nightstands away from the bed, removing all bedding and deciding if to turn the bed clockwise or counterclockwise first.
Strategize the rotationbased on the bed. If people have a bed with a headboard, they will want to move the mattress slightly away from the top of the bed before rotating. If it also has a footboard people could lift the mattress and rest it on the footboard to aid in their rotation.
Get in there with the vacuum, while possible. Depending on the mattress and bed set up, it may be worth pausing mid-rotation to grab the dustbuster and get into those hard to reach spots under and around the bed and mattress. Adding fresh clean sheets to the newly rotated bed may make people feel like they’ve got a brand new bed.
What Mattresses Need To Be Rotated?
Unless the mattress company that someone purchases their bed from says otherwise, it’salmost always a good idea to rotate the mattressregularly.
Here is a list of mattress types that would benefit from rotation:
- Memory Foam
- Latex Foam
- Hybrid (a mix of more than one material – usually a combo of foam and innerspring)
In some cases,air beds with foam topperswill also benefit from rotation.

Non-pillow top innerspring mattressestend to be the type of mattress that will still need to be flipped, but foam mattresses that are designed with specific layers do not need to be flipped. If people have a hybrid mattress with springs or a traditional innerspring mattress, it would be wise toconsult with their mattress manufacturerbefore rotating or flipping.

Do I Need to Flip or Rotate My Mattress?

How often should I rotate my mattress?
Here’s a trick that many hotels use to help you keep your mattress flips and rotations on schedule. Take two index cards and write “January” and “October” at the top of both. Then swivel the cards 180 degrees and write “April” on the opposite end of the January card and “July” on the other end of the October card.
Attach one card to the head of the mattress and the other to the foot. Flip and rotate your mattress to make sure the card on the foot of your bed matches the most recent month, reading right-side-up, and you’ll make sure that you’re always on the correct flipping schedule.
Should I flip my mattress if the label says I don’t have to?
There are many mattresses on the market that will tout that they are “one-sided” and don’t have to be flipped. So first, a little primer on mattress construction. Traditional two-sided innerspring mattresses are built around a central coil system that feature comfort layers on both the top and bottom of the coil system. No-flip mattresses feature a coil system with a single layer of foam comfort material above the coils and a quilt on top.
The reason for the change is that in 2007, new federal fire regulations made it too costly for many manufacturers to include both a top and bottom comfort layer in their mattresses. So the one-sided mattress (one comfort layer) came into vogue.
One-sided or two-sided?
Proponents of two-sided mattresses say that their mattress is made with no cost compromise and that with regular rotation and flipping, the two-sided mattress will long outlast its one-sided counterpart with outstanding comfort and support.
Critics of the two-sided mattress will say that the main benefit of the one-sided mattress is that its owner will never have to flip a heavy mattress and that the quality and durability are the same as a two-sided mattress.
